“Have you decided on your major?” my parents inquired.
“Bioengineering, of course.” I responded without the slightest hesitation.
I entered this world with Poland syndrome, a disease that prevented the formation of my right arm and pectoral muscles (胸肌). My parents, believing that playing with Lego could enhance my dexterity(灵巧), gifted me my first kit when I was five. Struggling to piece the components together, I crafted my first Lego work – a car. As I got older, I grew obsessed with Lego Technic, a more advanced range, and how to use it to build more delicate structures. By the age of nine, I had fashioned my first prosthetic arm(义肢)using Lego Technic – a simple box that perfectly accommodated my right arm.
This early creation sparked my drive for further exploration. Years later, I developed another prosthetic arm that I called the MK-1, which had fingers, a motor, a pressure sensor, a movable elbow joint, and a grabber capable of picking things up.
Before constructing it, I had already decided against traditional prosthetics. Not because they were ineffective, but because playing with Lego did significantly improve my dexterity, helping me adapt to my condition. However, a more frustrating reason was that prosthetics were too expensive. My parents and I had looked into getting one a few years earlier, only to be discouraged by the prohibitive price. So, I concluded that I might not need one because I was managing well without. Nevertheless, the joy of creating prosthetics with Lego remained, and I continued making them purely for the fun of it.
As the years passed, my creations evolved from MK-1 to the more advanced and comfortable MK-V. It featured a control unit that could send and receive orders from sensors on the arm to the motors, with cables that contract like muscles.
One day, a couple with their eight-year-old son, who lost both arms in an accident, reached out to me after learning about my creations. Short of money, they couldn’t afford well-functioning prosthetics. “Daniel,” the father earnestly asked, “we were wondering if you could possibly help build a set of prosthetics for our son.”358

One Saturday, a thirteen-year-old boy named Tim was hanging out with his friends at a local cafe. Tim and his friends would usually spend the entire weekend together, before meeting again the following week while in school.
That day, Tim’s mom Gloria wanted to change up his routine by inviting him to watch a new superhero movie with her. Gloria kept calling Tim on his cellphone, but he wouldn’t pick up. So, she decided to make her way to the cafe, knowing that this was where Tim and his friends usually had lunch on Saturdays.
When she spotted Tim and his friends, she made her way to them, only to see Tim’s friends giggling. “Your grandmother’s come to pick you up, Tim!” they teased. Tim glared (怒视) at his mother and walked up to her to stop her from going any closer. “What are you doing here?”! he scolded her. “You’re embarrassing me in front of my friends!”
“I just wanted to ask if you wanted to watch a movie with me,” she smiled , trying to hold his hand. Tim shrugged (耸肩) off her hands. “Leave me alone! I’m with my friends!” he told her.
Gloria walked back home sadly. When Tim got home that night, it was already half past ten. He went straight to his room, not even acknowledging Gloria’s presence in the living room.
“What’s the matter, Tim?” Gloria asked him. “Why is it that you don’t like being with me anymore? I’m worried about you, Tim. I barely know what’s going on in your life!” she said, trying to walk close r to him.
“You’re such an old, boring woman! Why did you even give birth to me?!” he yelled. Gloria felt a pain in her chest after hearing Tim yell at her that way. Before she could respond, Tim grabbed his backpack and ran out the door.
“Tim!” Gloria called out. Tim rode on his bike and left the street. Gloria tried calling out and chasing after him, but he was too fast. Then, she fainted in front of one of her neighbor’s houses.

Arun, a young man, would start a job, do it for a few days and then start another. Many years had passed like this and he had not yet been able to settle down in any business. He was upset, thinking he was just incapable of doing anything well.
One day, he happened to meet Maharaj, who was an old man well-known for his knowledge and wisdom. After listening to Arun’s problem, Maharaj invited him to his house.
Maharaj took Aru n to his garden for a walk. While they were walking, Maharaj learned that Arun’s favorite fruit was mango. Maharaj pointed to a bag and asked Aru n to take out some mango seeds and bury them in the ground. Aru n quickly picked out some seeds and planted them in the soil. After doing this, Aru n got tired. Maharaj asked him to go inside his house to rest.
About half an hour later, Maharaj said to Arun, “Go outside and see if fruits have come out of those seeds!” “But... how can fruits come out so soon? I just buried those seeds in the ground,” said Arun.
Maharaj said they could wait for some time. Another half hour later, Maharaj asked Aru n to go outside again and see if fruits had come out of those seeds. Arun knew that nothing would have happened, yet he still went to check.
Aru n returned quickly and said, “Nothing had happened. You are talking about fruits! Even the plants have not come out of those seeds yet.”
“It seems that something is wrong!” Maharaj said. “OK, Arun, take out those seeds from there and bury them somewhere else.” Aru n was shocked but still did as asked. After some time, Maharaj said, “Arun, go outside and see. This time fruits must have come out.” Aru n returned with the same answer, “Nothing happened!”
Aru n got impatient and said, “Can I go and rest now?”
“No, wait... let’s try changing seeds this time. Fruits might come out this time,” said Maharaj.

Sweat dripped from Callie’s face as she helped her big brother Briggs load hay bales (干草捆) onto the conveyor (输送机). She wasn’t strong enough to lift them herself, but she could at least help drag them into place. The machine chattered noisily while it carried the bales up to the hayloft, where Callie’s dad stacked them.
All was quiet when Callie went inside to feed the horses. But as she filled the water buckets, she thought she heard a faint meow from the hayloft. She climbed the steps to the loft and listened. The sound seemed to be coming from behind the bales. She ran to get her dad and Briggs. Briggs cocked his head. “It’s coming from outside,” he determined. “Just a bird in a tree.” Callie’s dad agreed. “How do you know for sure?” Callie said. “I guess we’ve just got better ears than you,” Briggs joked.
But Callie wasn’t convinced. She checked the hayloft again after supper. “Are you stuck in there, kitty?” she said, pressing an ear to the bales. Callie raced back to the house. “I heard it again, Dad! Will you please listen once more?” “All right, Cal,” her dad said, turning off the TV. “I’ll go check while you get ready for bed.” A few minutes later, Dad poked his head into Callie’s room. “The only thing I heard out there was a screech owl,” he said. “So stop worrying.” “OK, Dad,” Callie said. “Thanks for checking.”
But she woke in the night thinking about what she’d heard. What if a kitten was trapped behind the bales? She lay on her back, wondering what to do. Finally, she grabbed a flashlight and crept into the barn.

The snowstorm was to hit the evening of Monday, Jan.31,2022. After work, I had to take the laptop my colleague left in my office to his house before it came. On the way to his place, I picked up two pizzas because I’d promised my kids I'd bring some home for dinner.
It took me about 15 minutes to get to my colleague’s house, where I dropped off the laptop case and got right back on the road. Then the snow started and it was coming down fast. It came in fast and so windy that it screamed.
The windows were fogging up and getting covered with snow. I didn’t have a clue where I was. I stopped because I was afraid of driving into a farmer's field. I called 911. The dispatcher (调度员) told me to sit tight and wait things out for the night — nobody was coming to get me until morning at the earliest.
Those seconds after the call were agony. Getting out to walk in the white world with zero visibility, high winds and a low temperature wasn’t a wise option. Would the storm continue for longer than predicted or would I be found too late? My kids! It was the first time they would ever be spending a night without me at home. I was literally terrified at the scene that the snow was piled up.
I stayed in the car and texted my colleague whose laptop bag I had just returned. He had an idea.“ Pin your location on Google Maps and send it to me,” he said. I did, and a few minutes later he told me that I was on a road called Bouvier Lane, in between two farms. At 6:30p. m, I posted this new information to my Facebook community group, hoping for anyone who knew who lived on the farms to help me get rescued.
At 8 p. m, my cellphone rang. It was the son of the farmer who owned the land beside the road I was stranded on. He told me that his dad, Andy, was coming to get me.354

Flowers on the Bus
We were a very motley (混杂的) crowd of people who took the bus every day that summer 33 years ago. During the early morning ride from the suburb, we sat sleepily with our collars up to our ears, a cheerless and boring crowd.
One of the passengers was a small grey man who took the bus to the centre for senior citizens every morning. He walked slowly with a sad look on his face when he, with some difficulty, boarded the bus and sat down alone behind the driver. No one ever paid very much attention to him.
Then one July morning he said good morning to the driver and smiled short-sightedly down through the bus before he sat down. The driver nodded guardedly. The rest of us were silent.
The next day, the old man boarded the bus energetically, smiled and said in a loud voice, “And a very good morning to you all!” Some of us looked up, amazed, and murmured “Good morning,” in reply.
The following weeks we were more alert. Our friend was now dressed in a nice old suit and a wide out-of-date tie. The thin hair had been carefully combed. He said good morning to us every day and we gradually began to nod and talk to each other.
One morning he had a bunch of wild flowers in his hand. They were already dangling (低垂的) a little because of the heat. The driver turned around smilingly and asked: “Have you got yourself a girlfriend, Charlie?” We never got to know if his name really was “Charlie”, but he nodded shyly and said yes.
The other passengers whistled and clapped at him. Charlie bowed and waved the flowers before he sat down on his seat. Every morning after that Charlie always brought a flower. Some of the regular passengers began bringing him flowers for his dates. Everyone smiled. The men started to joke about it, talk to each other, and share the newspaper.

Rhiannon Menn launched a movement to deliver lasagna (千层面) and love to struggling neighbors.
Rhiannon Menn is the founder of Lasagna Love, a global nonprofit that connects neighbors through homemade meal delivery. In March 2022, she and her husband owned a design and building company, but their projects were put on hold. Rhiannon felt helpless and wondered what she could do to be useful. It didn’t take her long to decide.
“Cooking is my happy place,” she says, She ordered groceries online and got to work. She and her daughter, Cimorene, then three, made extra pans of lasagna, and Rhiannon posted in a local moms’ group on social media, offering to drop off a free home-cooked meal to anyone who wanted one. Some people requested a meal, Even more wanted to help Rhiannon feed those who were struggling.
Rhiannon created a spreadsheet for each volunteer, matching them with families who’d requested a meal. Word of what she was doing spread quickly on social media. Someone offered to create an online portal (门户网站) to manage the volunteers and meal requests. This automated system freed Rhiannon to do what she really loves: Cook and reach people in need. Volunteer chefs log in to the portal and input how many meals they’d like to deliver that week. The system matches them with nearby families requesting a meal, and the volunteer texts the family to set up a delivery time.
The organization is called Lasagna Love, but volunteers can deliver any home-cooked meal they’d like. Rhiannon’s recipe is her own homemade lasagna, making it healthier with grated zucchini and yellow squash. “I’ve shared my recipe, but volunteers are welcome to use their own recipes for any dishes they’d like to make,” she says.

“Mom, I’m ready to go,” called Jason.
Every Saturday, Jason looked forward to going to Chinatown to shop for food because his mom let him pick his favorite snacks: roast pork buns and bubble tea.
The streets in Chinatown were crowded with cars and pedestrians. His mother could not find the same exotic vegetables in the local supermarkets, so they always came here to shop. What fascinated Jason was tasty roast pork, even the whole pigs hanging on big hooks in the windows, their skins roasted to a glistening brown. Jason’s mouth would water just looking at them.
As they passed the newsstand carrying Chinese newspapers and magazines, Jason spotted an old man sitting on the sidewalk. His hair was long, white, and messy. The face beneath was lined, dirty, and unshaven. Frayed and torn clothing wrapped around his thin frame, and in this kind of cold weather, he even wore sandals, his feet blue with cold. He banged an empty can against the sidewalk. As Jason walked by, he could smell a musty odor and pinched his nostrils together. The old man reached out and touched Jason’s left leg. Instinctively, Jason gathered all his strength to jerk(猛拉) his leg away and kick the old man’s hand heavily. Frightened, he hurried to catch up with his mother without looking back.
“Mom, the old man touched me,” he cried, “He touched me with his dirty hands. It’s disgusting! And he smelled too.”
Jason’s mother glanced back at the man with a look of understanding and said gently, “Jason, he can’t help it. He’s homeless. He didn’t mean any harm.”
Mom’s words made Jason look back at the old man with regret, who now was looking up at other passersby, still banging his can.
On their way home, Jason asked, his voice filled with concern. “Why is that old man homeless? Where does he sleep?”
“I don’t know. It’s tough to be homeless, especially in this cold weather. He did look quite weak,” his mother replied.
Mom’s words made Jason’s regret deepened. He confessed his heavy kick to his mother, who reminded him that it was crucial to acknowledge his mistake and try to make up for it.

Tom is a special child. Ever since he was little, dogs have been his greatest passion. He often growled (低吼) and barked and sometimes moved around the house on all fours. His parents brought in a little brown female dog named Lynn. Tom was on cloud nine. One day, this little boy, together with Lynn, was sitting quietly down by the side of the street when suddenly a giant dog walked across him. He was a little surprised and started screaming as loudly as he could! All of this frightened Lynn away immediately.
Tom’s parents tried to see what the chances were of Lynn coming home on her own. But five days later, there was still no sign of Lynn. The boy didn’t just have tears streaming down his cheeks — his parents were saddened too.
The woods behind their home stretched for over 50 miles! Together with their neighbors, they searched for over a month. But Lynn was gone. Tom’s parents wanted to choose a new puppy for him. But no dog could replace Lynn for him.
Tom was not the same boy. He locked himself in his room. He seemed to have lost his love for dogs. He could not focus his attention on his classes so he didn’t want to go to school. He would easily get angry with people around him. Tom changed from a happy, smiling boy to an upset and annoying kid.
Tom’s parents wanted him to stay home and he had been studying at home ever since. His parents accompanied him almost every day, but staying home didn’t help much. The boy’s mother worried a lot. One rainy afternoon, she saw him staring out the window. “I miss Lynn so much. I wonder if everything is okay with her?” It had been a long time since his beloved dog ran away, but Tom’s despair was as great as the day it happened. Days later, Tom walked out the front door with his head down and sat by the side of the street.

When I was a kid, my parents and I lived near the forest. They often told me that our family was a team that needed to work together for the household to function smoothly. There was always an abundance of work to do — cooking, cleaning, and walking dogs. I volunteered to walk our dog, Max, who had been adopted one month before. I never dared let this giant dog off the lead (牵狗绳), just in case he took off.
One morning, we were walking along in the forest when Max started pulling on the lead. At first, I was able to hold on despite the wet ground from a recent shower. But the more I tried to stop him pulling, the more it turned into a tug of war. And thanks to the slippery ground, I lost.
Pulling his lead, Max shot off like a bullet, leaving me screaming behind. I chased him but lost my footing and fell face-first into some mud. I stumbled (踉跄) to my feet, but looking ahead, I found him running back towards me. I thought he was going to stop and give me his “Sorry” look. But instead, the dog shot past me and returned after a while.
As soon as we got home, my mother immediately attended to Max with a warm towel and a doggy treat. I thought seeing me stumbling and covered in mud, I would also get a warm cup of tea and a motherly kiss. Instead, I got a very loud lecture about letting the dog loose in the forest.
I felt frustrated. It wasn’t fair that she didn’t understand how difficult it was to control Max. I fought back, “Stop lecturing me! Why is everything my fault?” With these words, I stormed into my bedroom and slammed the door shut.
In the evening, I heard my mother call Max and take him out. It wasn’t long before I heard my mother screaming and the door opening again.

Bringing Back Memories
“The cleaners said I could pick up our stuff today.” Jet’s mom said on the drive to school.
“Do you think they were able to clean Big Dog?” Jet asked, trying not to sound too worried.
But he was worried. Big Dog was his favorite toy. Grandpa had won it for him at the fair when he was five years old. Jet was eight now, and he didn’t need to sleep with it or anything. But he did need it. He needed it to sit on the shelf above his bed- the shelf that was now burnt by the house fire.
“I’m not sure what they were able to save.” Mom said. ” They said they weren’t able to save our photo albums. I will miss those pictures. “ Jet could tell she was really sad. ”I’ll pick you up after school, and we’ll go through the boxes together. Mom said before she hugged him good- bye and drove off.
Jet tried to focus on his schoolwork all day, but he couldn’t keep his mind off Big Dog. He carried his backpack through the halls as if he were carrying his old stuffed friend. During library time, he checked out a book about dogs. At break time, he and his friends pretended they were playing carnival games and winning prizes.
RRRRRINNNGGG! Time for art class
Mr. Light said it was “artist’s choice” day, so they could work on whatever they wished. Jet stared at an empty page. He thought of his mom picking up the boxes of things that bad been damaged by the fire. Then he remembered how sad his mom was about the photo albums. Most things could be replaced at the store. Ever since I was little, the doctors told my parents that someday I would need hearing aids. But I hate everything to do with my ears. Of all my features, my ears are the ones I hate the most. They’re like tiny closed fists on the sides of my face.
Although my hearing was getting worse, I hadn’t told anyone. The ocean sound that was always in my head had been getting louder, drowning out people’s voices, like I was underwater. I couldn’t hear teachers if I sat in the back of the class. But I knew if I told Mom or Dad about it, I’d end up with hearing aids.
Then in my annual checkup in October, I failed the audiology test and the doctor said, “Dude, it’s time.” And he sent me to a special ear doctor.
When the ear doctor first pulled the hearing aids out for me and Mom to look at, I groaned.
“I’m not wearing that thing,” I announced.
“I know they probably look kind of big,” said the ear doctor, “but we had to attach them to the headband because we had no other way of making them stay in your ears.”
Normal aids usually have a part that wraps around the outer ear to hold the inner bud in place. But since I didn’t have outer ears, they had to put the earbuds on this heavy-duty headband that was supposed to wrap around the back of my head. I could imagine how strange I’d look—my classmates would laugh at me, and even my teacher Mr. Browne, my friends Summer and Jack would be scared at me!
“Can’t wear that. Mom; I’ll look like Lobot!” I whined.
“Lobot?” The ear doctor smiled as he looked at the headphones and made some adjustments.
“The Empire Strikes Back? The bald guy with the cool radio-transmitter thing that wraps around the back of his skull?”
“You know Star Wars stuff?” I asked the ear doctor.
“Hey, Lobot’s cool,” said he, sliding the earphones on my head, carefully.
“There you go, August. So how’s that?”

It’s common knowledge that servers usually rely on tip money to top up a pretty small salary. So usually it’s polite practice to tip them, even if they don’t do a satisfying job.
Karen Vinacour and her daughter felt as though a tip wasn’t reasonable during their visit to a pizzeria, however. In 2019, Vinacour and her daughter were having lunch at the famed New York eatery Patsy’s Pizzeria. Their server that day was Armando Markaj, a 27-year-old who was serving slices and other dishes.
Vinacour and her daughter questioned why there weren’t more pictures of women on the walls. When the server shrugged (耸肩) and said, “Maybe women don’t eat a lot of pizza?”, she and her daughter got a little annoyed so they didn’t tip the server. Instead, she and her daughter gathered up their things and left. Unfortunately, they left one very important thing behind: a Citibank check for $424,000.
When Markaj cleaned the table, he found the money, but when he ran outside, the mother and daughter had left. So he handed it over to the restaurant’s owner, Frank Brija. They thought the owner of the money would come back to ask for the check.
“We thought for sure it was a billionaire or something who came in here, because who walks around with a check like that?” he said.
As it turned out, Vinacour was using the money for a down payment on a house she had seen in the area. The money was the retired 79-year-old social worker’s life savings. She and her daughter had been looking at the house and stopped at Patsy’s for a quick lunch afterward.
The next night she realized the check was missing and called her daughter. Her daughter searched through the trash bin (垃圾桶) and everywhere but had no luck. They couldn’t remember where they left the check.

I survived a snowstorm
A snowstorm was supposed to hit on the evening of Monday, Jan. 31, 2022. I was working from home, but I had to leave that afternoon and go to my office at First Nations University in Regina, Saskatchewan, so I could sign an emergency financial aid check for a student. As director of finance, I wanted to get it to him as soon as possible, snowstorm or not. Besides, I wasn’t worried. I figured I had more than enough time to make it to the office and get back home.
The route to the university took about 30 minutes along the Trans-Canada Highway. When I got there, my colleague Jack came to my office to co-sign the check, then he left for the day. As I was packing up, I noticed Jack had left his laptop bag in my office.
“Shoot,” Jack said when I called him. “I’m already home.”
“I can bring it to you,” I assured him. It was just past 4:30 p. m. The snow wasn’t supposed to start until later, but just to be safe, I decided to take the country roads to his home instead of the highway. On the way to his place, I picked up a new cellphone charger, filled up my SUV with gas and picked up two stuffed-crust pizzas because I’d promised my 15-year-old daughter and 10-year-old son I’d bring some pizzas home for dinner. As a single mother, I worked hard and did my utmost to take good care of my two kids though it was not easy.
It took me about 15 minutes to get to Jack’s house, where I dropped off his laptop bag and got right back on the road. Then the snow started-and it was coming down fast. Within minutes I was in a whiteout. The storm was a “snownado,” or what the TV meteorologists called a Saskatchewan screamer, because it came in fast and so windy that it screamed.
The snowstorm grew stronger and stronger, forcing me to slow down. The windows were fogging up and getting covered with snow, so I rolled down my driver’s side window, thinking I could better follow the edge of the road and keep to a straight line. But really, I didn’t have a clue where I was or even which side of the road I was on. At one point, I didn’t know exactly where I was going, I stopped because I was afraid of driving into a farmer’s field, a ditch or worse. I kept the car running to stay warm and called 911. The policeman who received the call sadly advised me to try other ways for rescue as he was the only one on the duty.

Paragraph 2:

【答案】One possible version:
I knew it would be a challenging and demanding task, but I responded with a “yes”. The boy lifted his head with his once lifeless eyes now glittering with a spark of hope. I beamed at him with a radiant smile and without any delay, embarked on the task. The subsequent days witnessed how I carefully selected the Lego pieces that catered to the boy’s interests and intricately integrated practical components to enhance its flexibility. Days turned into weeks, and the boy-customized prosthetics finally took shape. It’s time for them to fulfill their intended purpose.
I rushed to the boy’s home and secured the prosthetics onto him. Holding breath, we anxiously awaited the result — they worked! The room erupted with cheers! The boy expressed his gratitude and sprinted to his parents to envelop them in the biggest hug he hadn’t been able to give for years. The scene was truly inspiring. Never had I imagined that my creations, born out of mere fun, would someday make such a profound difference. It is on that day that I made up my mind to commit myself to making a lasting impact in the realm of prosthetic innovation.

【答案】When Tim got home late that night, he saw a neighbor at their door. The neighbor, with a look of concern, informed Tim that his mother had fainted and was rushed to the hospital. Tim’s mind went blank as he processed the information, his heart pounding in his chest. A wave of guilt washed over him as he realized what he had done to his mother. He quickly grabbed his bike keys and dashed outside, his bike already waiting for him in the driveway. The cool night air rushed past him, the streetlights casting flickering shadows on his path. Every pedal felt like a race against time as he pushed himself to reach the hospital as soon as possible.
After riding for half an hour, Tim arrived at the hospital. Breathless and drenched in sweat, he rushed to the reception desk and asked for his mother’s room. The nurse directed him to a softly lit room where Gloria lay. Her face was pale, but her eyes lit up when she saw her son. Tim inched to her bedside, tears streaming down his face. He grabbed her hand and whispered apologies for his recent behavior. Gloria, with a weary but forgiving smile, reassured him that she was okay and that they could work through their differences. As they held each other’s hands, sharing words of understanding and love, the tension between them melted away.

【答案】
Now, Arun lost all his patience. He said, “I can’t believe a knowledgeable person like you doesn’t know such a simple fact that after you plant a seed, it takes time for it to grow. You have to add fertilizer and water to the seed. You have to wait for a long time before you get the fruits.” Maharaj smiled, “Arun, this is what I want to tell you. It takes time to get any profit from what you do. You need to be patient.”
Arun felt ashamed and began to reflect. He recalled that he had changed his jobs frequently instead of giving more patience while doing a certain job. A sense of regret washed over him. Though he realized his real problem, he felt at a loss in what business to settle down and was afraid that it was too late. Sensing his concern, Maharaj comforted, “Be patient! Maybe you can give gardening a try and see what will happen.” Aru n smiled and nodded firmly.

【答案】One possible version:
Once in the barn, she shined the flashlight's beam toward the ladder. Her heart pounding, Callie climbed up to the hayloft. She moved carefully between the hay bales, listening intently. Suddenly, she heard a faint meow coming from a far corner. Excited but cautious, Callie inched her way towards the sound, moving hay bales aside one by one. As she neared the source, the meowing grew louder and more desperate. Finally, behind the last bale, she spotted a tiny black and white kitten, its eyes wide with fear.
Finally, Callie picked up the scared kitten from the corner of the hayloft. She cradled it gently in her arms, the little kitten shivering all over. It snuggled against her, seemingly relieved to be found. Callie carefully made her way down the ladder and rushed back to the house. She woke her father and brother, proudly showing them the kitten and explaining how she had trusted her instincts. Her family was amazed and proud of her persistence. She decided to name the kitten“Lucky” and vowed to care for it until they could find its owner or, if necessary, give it a permanent home on their farm.

【答案】Later, I saw a tall figure moving toward me in the dark, carrying a flashlight and a shovel (铲子). It was Andy, the farmer, who had come to rescue me from the snowstorm. Despite the fierce wind and blinding snow, he managed to reach my car. He quickly cleared a path through the snow with his shovel and guided me safely to his pickup truck. “Let’s get you warmed up,” he shouted over the howling wind. We made our way back to his farmhouse, fighting against the relentless snow.
In Andy’s home, his wife, Maryann Bouvier, treated me to hot drinks. The warmth of the house and their hospitality quickly eased my worries. As I sipped the steaming cup, I felt incredibly grateful for their kindness and quick response. Maryann insisted I stay the night due to the unsafe weather conditions. The next morning, with the storm subsided, Andy drove me back to my car. I thanked them profusely and promised to return their kindness one day. That day, amidst the whiteout, I found hope and humanity in the generous spirit of Andy and Maryann.

【答案】范文
The summer went by when one morning Charlie wasn’t waiting at his usual stop. When he wasn’t there the next day and the day after that, we started wondering if he was sick or — hopefully — on holiday somewhere. When we came nearer to the centre for senior citizens, one of the passengers asked the driver to wait. We all held our breaths when she went to the door. Yes, the staff said, they knew who we were talking about. The elderly gentleman was fine, but his girlfriend had died at the weekend and he hadn’t been coming to the centre that week.
Hearing the news, we all remained silent the rest of the way to work. How could he survive the great loss? Could he get back on his feet and come back to us again? Nobody knew. One Monday, to everyone’s great relief, Charlie was seen again, waiting at the stop. He seemed to have shrinked again, stooping a bit more, and without a tie. Inside the bus was a silence similar to that in a church. Even though no one had talked about it, all those of us, who he had made such an impression on that summer, sat with our eyes filled with tears and a bunch of wild flowers in our hands. Those flowers on the bus dangled a little but shone with the brilliance of humanity.

As years passed Lasagna Love’s reach expanded beyond Rhiannon’s hometown, across the nation and even internationally. Volunteers in cities from New York to Tokyo embraced the mission, who have delivered more than 150,000 meals to families in their communities. The simple act of sharing a meal transformed into a global movement, uniting strangers in a common goal of compassion and support. Rhiannon, humbled by the response, continued to lead by example, cooking alongside her growing team and inspiring countless others to spread love through their own kitchens. And many media would like to report it, including a local journalist.
When interviewed by the local journalist Rhiannon Menn smiled with pride. She shared how just last week, a volunteer chef in Tokyo had delivered a lasagna to an elderly couple who had been isolated for months. The couple was so touched by the gesture that they decided to join the movement, baking traditional Japanese dishes to share with their neighbors.

【答案】The next day, with his mother’s help, Jason decided to do something. They drove to the familiar side street in Chinatown with several packages of necessities. The old man was still there, looking even skinnier than the day before. He glanced at Jason and seemed to recognize him. Jason opened his packages and handed the old man a pair of shoes and some clothes. He said gently to the man, “I hope they fit.” And then he took a package of roast pork from his mom. Eagerly slipping it to the old man’s hand, he said, “It’s also for you.”
Hearing this, the old man looked at them with watery eyes. He bowed deeply, whispering “Thank you!” in a trembling voice. Jason helped him put on the new shoes and clothes. Surprisingly, Jason didn’t think of the man as smelly but someone worthy of respect and care at this moment. When the old man was wolfing down the roast pork, his eyes misted over once again. “I’m sorry for that kick,” Jason apologized sincerely. Touched by the man’s gratitude, Jason understood that it was never too late to make up for a past mistake, no matter how late it might seem.

【答案】 A huge brown dog crossed the street and stood in front of the crying boy. The animal barked twice and watched Tom, tongue rolling out. It was only after a few minutes that he looked at it more closely. The four-legged giant’s glassy eyes reminded him of hugging by the fireplace and running between the sprinklers in the backyard. He knew the dog very well. It was Lynn!!! Tom ran to his friend and wrapped his arms tightly around her neck.
Lynn licked his cheeks and then walked to the edge of the woods. Tom ran after Lynn and entered the woods. He lost sight of her for a moment, but luckily soon heard his friend barking. And he finally saw it… Lynn grew up to be an adult dog and became a mother! She had three fluffy, sweet little puppies. Tom took Lynn and her puppies home and his parents were very happy to adopt the little dogs. Tom took good care of Lynn and her puppies. He shared his story, showing his appreciation of tiny animals. Tom made a full recovery. He happily returned to school. His classmates visit him almost every day. Of course, they want to see not only Tom, but also Lynn and her puppies.

I walked out of my room. Not surprisingly, they were both covered in mud. It was evident that Max had led my mother on another wild chase through the forest. My frustration melted away as I saw my mother’s apologetic expression. “Sweetheart,” my mom said softly, “I’m sorry for scolding you earlier.” After a quick shower, she then shared her own adventure with Max and how he also managed to escape from her grasp, when I served her a warm cup of tea. It seemed we were both at our wits’ end with this dog. (89 words)
Dad stepped in, suggesting that we work together to train Max. We spent the next few days teaching Max basic commands like “sit”, “stay”, and “come back”. It wasn’t easy, but gradually, Max started responding better to us. The instant we tried to stop him pulling, he sat down with eyes looking intently at us. In the process, not only did Max become more obedient, but our family also grew closer. We realized that every member of our team played an important role, and we needed to support each other to ensure everything ran smoothly. (84 words)

But the pictures were gone forever.

When Jet’s mom picked him up from school, Big Dog was in the back seat. Jet’s eyes widened with joy, and he hugged Big Dog tightly. “You won’t believe it! The cleaners managed to save him!” Mom exclaimed, smiling with relief. Handing his mom the drawings, Jet said, “I made something for you too.” As she flipped through the pages, tears welled up in her eyes. “These are beautiful, Jet,” she whispered, hugging him. “You’ve brought back all our memories.” Together, they headed home, cherishing the moments they could recreate.

I could hear sounds clearly now as if I had just stepped out of a dark room and into a bright one! “It’s so quiet in my ears and I don’t hear that noise anymore! Thank you so much, Dr. James!” I answered excitedly. Mom had me look in the big mirror at how the hearing aids looked. With my hair covering most of the headband, I found I was OK with my new Lobot hearing aids.
The first day I showed up at school with the hearing aids, I thought kids would make a big deal about it. But no one did. Summer was glad I could hear better, and Jack said it made me look like an FBI agent or something. But that was it. Mr. Browne kindly said to me. “If you ever expect me to repeat something, Auggie, make sure you tell me, okay?” Now that I look back, I don’t know why I was so stressed about it all this time. Funny how sometimes you worry a lot about something and it turns out to be nothing.

【答案】
Having no other choices, I called Jack for help. “Stay there, I’ll be right there,” Jack’s anxious voice came from the phone quickly. Finally, after 30 minutes of anxious waiting, I saw a tall figure moving quickly toward me with a flashlight. I’d never been more relieved to see someone in my life. It was Jack who was fighting the wind and snow all the way to get me. “I want you to follow me in your car. You’ll be ok.” he said. I drove slowly behind him, feeling my heart begin to beat more slowly. We got to Jack’s house safely at last.
The warm reception and food at Jack’s home relieved my anxiety. Jack’s wife and two kids welcomed me with open arms and a warm meal, which turned all my fears into relief and gratitude. We spent the night chatting freely, sharing food and waiting out the tempest cozily until the highway resumed. A week later, I took my children to visit Jack’s house, and our two families became the best friends from then on.
