Police officers, firefighters or emergency response teams? Would you put your local meteorologist (气象预报员) in this group? That’s the career Ashley Ruiz chose, and she’s now the first female chief meteorologist in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Ruiz predicts the weather for her community. In 2020, a tornado hit Ruiz’s hometown of Chattanooga, Tennessee — and, even closer to home, her house. So she said she knew what a lifesaving job this could be. However, her job isn’t without difficulties. “Hearing people have been injured, like in a big hurricane, is really hard,” she said. “We try our best to predict the weather as best as we can, and we are getting better. But it can always change.” Ruiz talked about the new and changing weather patterns. She said, “We are absolutely seeing changes in weather, with more intense and more frequent storms, which relate to climate change.” Weather is changing everywhere, as the planet warms. There are more frequent droughts, stronger storms, and increasing temperature changes. This makes predicting the weather difficult. Ruiz always knew she was interested in weather and how it affected the world. But her path to a career in meteorology wasn’t easy. She said, “I struggled so hard with math and wanted to give up. But I kept pushing and working hard, and now I’m the first woman chief meteorologist in the Baton Rouge TV market. I’m proud of that.” She wants kids to know they should never give up on their education or their dreams. 4. Why was the disaster in Ruiz’s hometown mentioned in the text? A. To call on people to prepare for disasters. B. To introduce Ruiz’s unusual childhood experience. C. To offer a successful example of weather forecast. D. To show Ruiz’s understanding of the work of a meteorologist. 5. What is a challenge of predicting the weather according to the text? A. Climate change. B. People’s injury. C. Poor technology. D. Lack of experience. 6. Which word can best describe Ruiz according to the last paragraph? A. Creative. B. Clever. C. Hard-working. D. World-famous. 7. In which section of a newspaper may the text appear? A. Sports. B. People. C. Education. D. Health. C People who have trouble walking often have a hard time enjoying the beach. But hundreds of beaches in Greece now offer a new way for people in wheelchairs to get into the water by themselves. It’s called Seatrac. Seatrac is basically a chair on a moving ramp (轻便梯) that can smoothly carry a disabled person into the sea. Once in the sea, the person can either remain in the chair, enjoying the water or go for a swim. The Seatrac system can also help anyone else who has a hard time walking, including older people and pregnant women. Seatrac was invented and developed in Greece. The idea for it came when one of the inventors, Ignatios Fotiou, was talking with a friend who used a wheelchair. The friend said he enjoyed the sea, but didn’t like having to be carried into the ocean as if he were a sack (袋) of potatoes. Mr. Fotiou realized that there must be a way to make it easier for wheelchair users to get into the water. Mr. Fotiou worked with his partner and a professor at a Greek university to design the system. In time they formed a company called TOBEA to build and sell it. The company worked hard to make the system simple to put in place and easy to run. A wooden walkway allows wheelchair users to reach the Seatrac. The system is solar-powered. It doesn’t require outside power and can continue to run even if the electricity goes out. The Seatrac system can easily be packed up and stored when the swimming season ends. This summer, the Seatrac system is being used at over 220 beaches in Greece, Cyprus, Italy and Latvia. TOBEA hopes to offer Seatrac in other countries soon. The Seatrac service in Greece is being offered for free. The Greek government has helped pay for it, with local cities buying and managing the equipment. Greece’s government hopes that Seatrac will help attract more tourists to the country. 8. Who is Seatrac designed for? A. Older people who move freely. B. Youths who like to swim in the sea. C. Women who enjoy beach baths with their children. D. People who have trouble moving around on the beach. 9. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 4 refer to? A. The system. B. Potato. C. Ramp. D. Normal wheelchair. 10. What can we learn about the Seatrac system? A. It’s not easy to operate. B. Users don’t have to worry about charging it. C. People need to have a big cost to use it in Greece. D. It has been available at more than one thousand beaches. 11. Why does the Greek government help pay for the Seatrac service? A. To improve the government’s image. B. To promote the development of tourism. C. To set up an organization for the disabled. D. To support small and medium-sized local companies. D In late June, the US government agreed to allow two companies, Upside Foods and Good Meat, to sell chicken meat that has been grown in a laboratory. That makes the US the second country to approve lab-grown chicken. Unlike normal chicken meat, lab-grown meat isn’t created by raising and killing chickens. Instead, it’s a meat product developed from animal cells that are grown in a lab. So it is also called “cell-based” or “cultured” meat. The process of creating lab-grown meat is completely different from the normal meat-raising process. The first cells come from live animals. The cells are grown inside large steel tanks, where they’re fed with everything they need to grow. In a few weeks, the cells grow to look like normal meat. The companies then form this meat into more familiar shapes. The companies say that their meat is better for the environment than meat from animals. Raising animals for food uses huge amounts of land and water. It also creates a lot of pollution. Raising animals for food creates about 15% of the world’s greenhouse gases. That’s why cutting back on eating meat is one of the easiest ways to fight climate change. Lab-grown meat can also help out in other ways. Raising animals for food is extremely hard on animals. They are often kept in small spaces and are treated badly. Polls (民意调查) have shown that many people aren’t too interested in lab-grown meat. Lots of people believe that it just sounds weird. But Amy Chen, who works for Upside Foods, says that once people try the meat, “The most common response we get is, ‘Oh, it tastes like chicken.’” But right now, the meat is far more expensive than meat from animals. Even though the companies have been approved, they have the huge challenge of figuring out how to make much more meat far more cheaply. 12. What can we know about lab-grown chicken meat? A. It is created from animal cells in a laboratory. B. It is cheaper than the normal meat. C. America is the first country to approve selling it. D. Two companies are allowed to do research on it. 13. What is paragraph 5 mainly about? A. The necessity of eating normal meat. B. The process of creating lab-grown meat. C. The disadvantages of raising animals for food. D. The similarities between lab-grown meat and normal meat. 14. What does the underlined word “weird” in paragraph 6 mean? A. Easy. B. Ordinary. C. Strange. D. Attractive. 15. What is the best title for the text? A. Lab-grown Meat Is Outdated B. What Exactly Is Lab-grown Meat? C. How Is the Lab-grown Chicken Made? D. Lab-grown Chicken Meat Is Coming It’s easy to let things slide in midlife. We had a special event each year: the music festival at a well-known theme park. It was an opportunity for us to showcase our talents and enjoy the pleasure of the park. To make this event meaningful, we organized a fundraising campaign, selling chocolate bars throughout our community. It was a simple plan but one that required us to connect with our neighbors and ask for their support. There were always heart- warming encounters. One sunny afternoon, I approached a neighbor’s home. The lady who answered the door greeted me with a smile and, after hearing about our cause, she decided to support us by purchasing several bars. As we were nearing the end, the lady’s little girl, who was about three or four years old and had been watching our actions, ran out. The little girl came back with a bill in her hand, a little dirt on it. She was eager to give it to me and said, “I want to be like Mom and support you.” The lady was surprised and said it was saved by the girl herself. Her lovely face and eager eyes made it hard for me to say no. I tried to explain to her that her mother was already buying some chocolate, but she was determined. Neither her mother nor I could dissuade (劝阻) her from her newfound task of handing me the dollar bill. I knew that I couldn’t put her mother in a position to buy more chocolate than she had originally intended. I couldn’t accept the little girl’s money. Suddenly, inspiration struck! _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The little girl’s eyes widened with joy as she grasped the bill and the chocolate bar. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 1~5 ACABC 6~10 CBAAB 11~15 CCACB 16~20 ABCBA 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 2024~2025学年度高中同步月考测试卷 (一) 高 二 英 语 测试模块:选择性必修第一册 考生注意: 1. 1. In time, they formed a company called TOBEA to build and sell it. D 9. A 10. B 11. 根据第一段“People who have trouble walking often have a hard time enjoying the beach. But hundreds of beaches in Greece now offer a new way for people in wheelchairs to get into the water by themselves. It’s called Seatrac.(走路有困难的人通常很难享受海滩。但希腊数百个海滩现在为坐轮椅的人自己下水提供了一种新方式。它叫做Seatrac。)”可知,希腊在数百个海滩为行动不便的人提供了自动操作的轮椅入水坡道系统 Seatrac。故选D项。 【9题详解】 词义猜测题。根据上文的“Mr. Fotiou worked with his partner and a professor at a Greek university to design the system.(福蒂欧和他的搭档以及希腊一所大学的教授一起设计了这个系统。)” 故选A项。 根据第五段中的“The system is solar-powered. It doesn’t require outside power and can continue to run even if the electricity goes out.(该系统是太阳能驱动的。它不需要外部电源,即使停电也能继续运行。)”可知,这个系统是太阳能驱动的,所以使用者不用担心它的充电问题。故选B项。 【11题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段中的“The Greek government has helped pay for it, with local cities buying and managing the equipment. Greece’s government hopes that Seatrac will help attract more tourists to the country.(希腊政府帮助支付了这笔费用,由当地城市购买和管理设备。希腊政府希望Seatrac能帮助吸引更多游客。)”可知,希腊政府为这个轮椅系统买单,是希望Seatrac能帮助吸引更多游客,由此可知,希腊政府要帮助支付Seatrac的服务费用是想促进旅游经济的发展。故选B项。 D In late June, the US government agreed to allow two companies, Upside Foods and Good Meat, to sell chicken meat that has been grown in a laboratory. D. Lab-grown Chicken Meat Is Coming 【答案】12. A 13. C 14. C 15. 根据文章第二段“Unlike normal chicken meat, lab-grown meat isn’t created by raising and killing chickens. Instead, it’s a meat product developed from animal cells that are grown in a lab. So it is also called “cell-based” or “cultured” meat.(与普通的鸡肉不同,实验室培育的肉并不是通过饲养和宰杀鸡只来获得的。相反,它是一种在实验室中从动物细胞中培育出来的肉类产品。因此,它也被称为“细胞基”或“培养”肉。)”可知,实验室培育的鸡肉不是通过饲养和宰杀鸡只来获得的,而是从在实验室中培养的动物细胞中培育出来的。因此,我们可以知道实验室培育的鸡肉是由实验室中的动物细胞制成的。故选A。 根据文章第五段“Raising animals for food uses huge amounts of land and water. They are often kept in small spaces and are treated badly.(饲养动物作为食物会消耗大量的土地和水资源。 根据划线单词上文“Polls (民意调查) have shown that many people aren’t too interested in lab-grown meat.(民意调查显示许多人对实验室培育的肉类并不太感兴趣。)” 再根据下文“But Amy Chen, who works for Upside Foods, says that once people try the meat, “The most common response we get is, ‘Oh, it tastes like chicken.’”(但 Upside Foods 的Amy Chen表示,一旦人们尝过这种肉,“我们得到的最常见的回应是,‘哦,它的味道就像鸡肉。’”)” 根据文章第一段“In late June, the US government agreed to allow two companies, Upside Foods and Good Meat, to sell chicken meat that has been grown in a laboratory. That makes the US the second country to approve lab-grown chicken.(六月底,美国政府同意允许两家公司 Upside Foods 和 Good Meat 销售在实验室培育的鸡肉。 It’s easy to let things slide in midlife. One sunny afternoon I approached a neighbor’s home. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: Suddenly, inspiration struck! With a quick look at the mother, I decided to take a more playful approach. I changed my attitude and accepted the dollar bill from the little girl, expressing my heartfelt thanks for her generosity. I gave her a chocolate bar, then quickly reached into my pocket, pulled out another bill, and handed it to her. I smiled and said, “Here’s your change!” The little girl’s eyes widened with joy as she grasped the bill and the chocolate bar. She was completely satisfied with the deal and believed that she had truly contributed to our fundraising efforts. With a cheerful wave, she ran back into the house, likely to return the dollar to its hiding place or to find a new one to continue her charitable work. The brief meeting left all of us with smiles on our faces. 词汇激活 行为类 决定做某事:decide to do sth/be determined to do sth 给某人某物:give sb sth/offer sb sth 对……做出贡献:contribute to/make a contribution to 情绪类 感谢:thank/be grateful 对……感到满意:be satisfied with/be content with 令人愉快:cheerful/pleasant 【点睛】【高分句型1】I changed my attitude and accepted the dollar bill from the little girl, expressing my heartfelt thanks for her generosity.
