Chaudhary weaves (编织) together lengths of rope and grass collected from the nearby riverbank in her village, skillfully shaping the materials into a gift box while instructing a group of women to follow suit.
The ropes being used were once the lifeline for mountain climbers tackling Nepal’s mountains and were then cast away. Diverse measures to remove such discarded materials have rocketed since 2019, when the government launched Clean Mountain Campaign.Around 140,000 tons of waste were collected on Mt. Everest alone, which were handled accordingly, either securely buried or recycled.
Some waste is now finding fresh life, transformed by skilled hands like Chaudhary’s into items to sell, thanks to an initiative led by Acharya, an owner of a waste processing business and an advocate for sustainable waste management. She has been working with the cleaning campaign, aiming at mountains like Mt. Everest.
“Metal waste goes through the recycling process, but we weren’t capable of recycling these ropes and cooking gas cans,” Acharya says. It didn’t occur to her that the waste which couldn’t be recycled could be reused until she met Rai at an art exhibition and a solution emerged.
Rai, a businessman dealing in craftworks, helped connect Acharya with Chaudhary and her team of craftswomen in hopes of unlocking the economic value of the mountain waste. With flexible hours, the project gives the craftswomen an opportunity to earn money even as they maintain their household responsibilities.
“While this seems insignificant compared to waste in the mountains, it’s a start. We can’t supply sufficient raw material with waste sorting and cleaning processes taking plenty of time and money,” Acharya says, desperate to expand the program to involve more women and treat more waste. But progress has been slow. “We need investment to mechanize the cleaning and processing of waste in the initial phase to provide the crafting team with enough materials to meet their demand,” she adds.
4. What were the ropes mentioned in paragraph 2 initially intended as?
A. Tools for tying up weeds. B. Villagers’ basic necessities of life.
C. Raw materials tor unique artworks. D. Life-saving devices for mountaineers.
5. What inspired Acharya’s resolution of non-recyclable waste?
A. A journey to the rural area. B. An encounter with a trader.
C. Information from a product launch. D. Attendance at an academic conference.
6. What does Acharya expect to do based on the last paragraph?
A. Train more senior technicians. B. Obtain a better reputation.
C. Drop waste washing procedures. D. Bring in advanced equipment.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. Chaudhary: An Eco-Minded Folk Artist
B. Nepali Women Are Turning Garbage into Crafts
C. Clean Mountain Campaign Has Already Taken Effect
D. A Headache: Mt. Everest Is Heavily Littered with Waste
D 5. B 6. D 7. B

“A fish out of water.” “A bike without a chain.” There are many metaphors for culture shock, all of which attempt to describe the unique experience of being far from one’s home country and culture.
Scientists have studied culture shock for over a century. Rather than focus on the purely negative aspects, psychologists describe it as a process of stress and adjustment. The first stage is the honeymoon phase, when we are filled with excitement about being in another country. Eventually, as daily challenges arise, we enter a state of crisis and anxiety, harboring unfriendly feelings about the host culture. The longer we are immersed in the culture, we adjust and recover from those negative feelings. Finally, after some time we adjust even more and fully accept the new culture.
One of the factors that determines how we react to cultural stress is our personality. Not surprisingly, extraverts (外向者) tend to have an easier time adjusting to new cultures. That is because being in a new country means meeting many new people and spending a lot of time around them, and extraverts thrive in these situations. But introverts simply prefer to be alone after spending time in groups, and only have limited energy to spend in social settings.
Cultural intelligence, or CQ, also plays its part. Cultural intelligence is defined as the capability of an individual to function effectively in situations characterized by cultural diversity. It has to do with our interest in interacting with people from culturally diverse backgrounds, and our ability to adapt to new cultural context. It is argued that the higher our CQ, the lesser the effect of culture shock on our ability to cope in new situations.
Many effective coping strategies are interpersonal. A recent study found that relating to others with empathy is significantly associated with lower stress levels abroad. The more we are able to take on other people’s points of view, the more positive our interpersonal relationships and thus our adaptation to the stress of culture shock.
8. What is the function of the first paragraph?
A. Explaining the quotes. B. Raising an argument.
C. Introducing the topic. D. Presenting an example.
9. How will a person feel the moment he arrives in a foreign country?
A. Anxious. B. Thrilled. C. Shocked. D. Grateful.
10. Who will most probably be affected by the cultural shock?
A. An active boy interested in anything new.
B. A shy boy unwilling to socialize with strangers.
C A quiet girl open to diverse cultural backgrounds.
D. A communicative girl fluent in the local language.
11. What is important for dealing with the cultural shock?
A. Lowering the stress level. B. Developing self-awareness.
C. Analyzing the cause of discomfort. D. Understanding others with sympathy.
C 9. B 10. B 11. D

Shakespeare described sleep as “the main course in life’s feast, and the most nourishing”. New research suggests it may also be a key nutrient in defend us against Alzheimer’s disease.
Poor sleep has long been linked to Alzheimer’s, but the relationship is similar to the chicken-and-egg puzzle. It isn’t clear which came first. During deep sleep, the brain produces slow electrical waves and flushes out neurotoxins (神经毒素) including amyloid (淀粉样蛋白) and tau (微管蛋白) , two indicators of the disease.
Studies have shown that even one night of terrible deep sleep can lead to an increase of amyloid. A week of disrupted sleep can raise the amount of tau, which is especially insidious because over time it can strangle neurons from the inside out.
A study in the Annals of Neurology found that a sleep pill called suvorexant could reduce amyloid and tau in middle-aged adults with no cognitive problems. The two-night trial showed that amyloid dropped 10%to 20%, and a key form of tau 10%to 15%in people who received a high dose compared to a placebo (安慰剂) group. But these effects need to be studied over longer periods of time—including in older adults at higher risk of Alzheimers. But the study suggests that improving sleep quality among middle-aged adults could help reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s later in life.
What has puzzled neurologists, however, is that some people with high levels of amyloid who may appear to have Alzheimer’s based on brain scans nonetheless function normally. Neurologists assume that this is because some people have higher levels of “cognitive reserve.” which enables them to function normally despite neurological damage. But there’s another X factor, which scientists have struggled to identify. A new study suggests it may be sleep, and in particular deep sleep.
“Think of deep sleep almost like a life raft that keeps memory afloat, rather than memory getting dragged down by the weight of Alzheimer’s disease,” says Matthew Walker, a neuroscience professor at UC Berkeley.
12. What is the relationship between sleep and Alzheimer’s disease according to the new research?
A. Inadequate sleep will indicate Alzheimer’s disease.
B. The disease may be prevented if we can sleep well.
C. Neurotoxins produced during sleep cause the disease.
D. A good sleep will raise the indicators of the disease.
13. What can we infer from paragraph four?
A. It’s too early to use the sleeping pill to treat Alzheimer’s.
B. It’s advisable that adults turn to suvorexant to sleep well.
C. Suvorexant is a desirable pill to improve our sleep quality.
D. The amount of Amyloid and tau decreased due to placebo.
14. What is the main idea of paragraph five?
A. Researchers’ great confusion about the high levels of amyloid.
B. Low level cognitive reserve resulting in abnormal brain function.
C. Potential determinants related to the possibility of Alzheimer’s.
D. Neurologists’ assumption about our brain function and damage.
15. Why dose Matthew Walker make the comparison in his remarks?
A. To advocate a healthy lifestyle among adults.
B. To emphasize the significance of sleep quality.
C. To demonstrate the crucial role of our memory.
D. To detail the damage brought by Alzheimer’s.
B 13. A 14. C 15. B

由文章第一段中“New research suggests it may also be a key nutrient in defend us against Alzheimer’s disease. (新的研究表明,睡眠可能也是保护我们免受阿尔茨海默病的关键营养素。)”可知,如果我们睡得好,这种疾病就可以预防。故选B。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。由文章第四段“A study in the Annals of Neurology found that a sleep pill called suvorexant could reduce amyloid and tau in middle-aged adults with no cognitive problems. 故选A。
由文章第五段“What has puzzled neurologists, however, is that some people with high levels of amyloid who may appear to have Alzheimer’s based on brain scans nonetheless function normally. Neurologists assume that this is because some people have higher levels of “cognitive reserve.” which enables them to function normally despite neurological damage. But there’s another X factor, which scientists have struggled to identify. A new study suggests it may be sleep, and in particular deep sleep.
由文章最后一段““Think of deep sleep almost like a life raft that keeps memory afloat, rather than memory getting dragged down by the weight of Alzheimer’s disease,” says Matthew Walker, a neuroscience professor at UC Berkeley.

设空位于首段段尾,应是点出主题,引出下文,根据前文“Gardening is a powerful outlet for creativity, enabling you to surround yourself with beauty. It can provide homegrown food for your family, keep you in touch with nature and is also an invaluable form of exercise. In short, gardening is beneficial to both body and soul.(园艺是发挥创造力的有力途径,能让你置身于美之中。它可以为你的家人提供自制的食物,让你与大自然保持联系,也是一种宝贵的锻炼方式。简而言之,园艺对身体和灵魂都有益。)”以及下文中的小标题可知,本文主要讲述进行园艺的一些建议,D项“Here are some essential tips for beginners in gardening(这里有一些对园艺初学者必不可少的建议。)”
根据前文“Whatever you’re growing, fertile soil is the key.(无论你种什么,肥沃的土壤是关键。)”
根据后文“Lettuce and basil are quick and easy to grow. They’ll replace their leaves every time you cut them. Vegetables like these mean continuous harvests, which is huge for keeping spirits high.(生菜和罗勒又快又容易种植。每次你剪掉它们的叶子,它们都会换新的。像这样的蔬菜意味着连续的收获,这对保持精神振奋非常重要。)”可知,本段建议是园艺初学者应该种植能不断收获的蔬菜来保持精神振奋,所以C项“If you’re a newcomer(如果你是一个新人)”顺接下文“choose ones you can harvest more than once(选择那些你可以收获不止一次的)”符合本段主题。故选C项。
设空处为本段小标题,根据后文“Some plants will grow tall and some will grow closer to the ground. Tall plants will shade shorter plants and prevent them getting needed sunshine. Also, give little seedlings plenty of room to stretch and grow. If they grow too close together, don’t be afraid to thin seedlings.(有些植物会长得很高,有些植物会长得离地面更近。高大的植物会遮蔽较矮的植物,使它们得不到所需的阳光。同时,给幼苗足够的空间伸展和生长。如果它们长得太近,不要害怕把幼苗削薄。)”可知,本段主题是建议要注意植物的生长空间,所以B项“Size up your growing space(评估你的种植空间)”符合主题,为本段小标题。故选B项。
【20题详解】
根据前文“Buying all of your plants from the garden center is expensive.(从园艺中心购买所有的植物是昂贵的。)”以及后文“Reach out to friends and family who garden and ask them to share spare seeds with you. Also check to see if they have any plants you can take cuttings from. My father used to drive his car to and from work, but things were different in the last spring Festival, during which he had enough time to experience the low-carbon lifestyle. We visited our relatives and friends by bicycle during the festival, which is good to our health and for the environment. Besides, I remember to turn off the light when I leave my room. 第二节 (满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was seven years old, my family moved from Mexico to America. In Mexico, I was a cheerful girl who loved making people laugh with my jokes and inventing fun games to play with my friends. However, when I arrived in America, I found it hard to fit in, and I became quieter.
We lived in a small house with a modest yard where we grew vegetables-my responsibility. While I took pride in watching them grow, there were times when I dreamed of having a beautiful garden like my schoolmate Luella’s, with its delicate tulips (郁金香). Although Luella lived in the same neighborhood as me, we barely knew each other.
It was after a tornado that Luella and I finally became close friends.
The tornado struck on a Sunday afternoon. The gentle breeze transformed into a strong wind, and thick gray clouds filled the sky. Gradually, the tornado took shape, starting as a thin rope and growing into a large black funnel (漏斗). My entire family gathered in the bathroom, seeking shelter from the storm. Terrified, I sat close to my mom, knees in my chest. After the storm had passed, our worries and fears were replaced by relief that we were unharmed and that our house had remained undamaged.
As I stepped outside, I witnessed the extent of the damage the tornado had caused to our neighborhood. Across the street, a tall tree had fallen, crushing Luella’s garden in front of her yellow house. We hurried over to check on it. Fortunately, her family seemed to be away at the time, and no one was injured. However, her once-beautiful garden was in ruins, with the fallen tree destroying the tulips and debris (碎片) spread everywhere. I could only imagine how heartbroken they must feel seeing this.
Then my mom’s usual words rang in my ear, “It is more blessed to give than to receive,” and my family started to think about how we could help.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Just at that moment, Luella’s family returned in their car.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Even after the debris was cleared, I could still sense Luella’s sorrow for her lost garden.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Just at that moment, Luella’ family returned in their car. Empathy surged within me as I saw their shock and disbelief. Approaching Luella, I tightly held her hands and said, “I’m so sorry for your loss, but thankfully you’re all right.” She weakly nodded, still puzzled by the shocking scene. My family volunteered to help clean up the mess, cutting down the branches and removing the fallen trees. To lift Luella’s spirits and give her comfort, I tried my best to cheer her up while tidying the garden with her, during which my own joyful personality seemed to revive a bit.
Even after the debris was cleared, I could still sense Luella’ sorrow for her lost garden. My heart went out to her, knowing how much she had cherished those tulips that she had devoted so much energy to. Determined to restore the beauty of the garden, I suggested we rebuild the garden, which Luella delightedly agreed. Carefully planted and watered, the new tulip seedlings once again filled the garden, which symbolized the beginning of our friendship, as well as the turning that I finally got embraced by this new environment. My mom was right: it’s more blessed to give than to receive because when you give, you may receive something unexpected in return.

A. An active boy interested in anything new.
B. A shy boy unwilling to socialize with strangers.
C. A quiet girl open to diverse cultural backgrounds.
D. A communicative girl fluent in the local language.
11. What is important for dealing with the cultural shock?
A. Lowering the stress level. B. Developing self-awareness.
C. Analyzing the cause of discomfort. D. Understanding others with sympathy.

1.续写词数应为150左右;
Just at that moment, Luella’s family returned in their car.
