When I was a young boy, every summer, Mom, Dad, my brothers and I would climb into our old car and drive for 7 hours over long mountain roads to visit Mom’s relatives in Tennessee. We always stayed in Grandma’s house there with her, Uncle Rich and Aunt Charlotte. It was a fun time with days full of excitement and joy. Often Aunt Charlotte would even make us a Thanksgiving dinner in the summertime. Some of my happiest childhood memories came from those vsits.
One especially holds a special place in my heart. During that visit, I had great fun every day. One evening, I climbed into bed in the guest bedroom on the second floor of the house. Although I had played and explored the whole day and was really tired, I was still wide awake, my mind racing with the day’s sweet events. As I lay there, I heard the most pleasant sound coming from the front window below me. It was laughter. Mom, Dad, Uncle Rich, and Aunt Charlotte were down there sharing stories and telling jokes. The laughter was so happy, so joyous, that I found myself smiling. And even then in my young mind and childish heart, I realized that this is how life should be. The laughter became a sweet song to me and I fell asleep feeling all was right with the world.
Whenever my life seems too hard or crazy, I look back on that memory. And I took the lessons that Uncle Rich and Aunt Charlotte taught me. They always lived their lives with love and joy and laughter and smiles. Uncle Rich passed away many years ago but Aunt Charlotte is still alive. I write to her each week and I am so thankful to still have her in my life.
We fill lives with laughter and smiles and love and joy. We not only give ourselves happiness but also make this world a better and more beautiful place.

Cold nights do not stop 15- year- old Gabe Bisonette. He has been learning fishing with a spear(矛)on a lake, a tradition of the Ojibwe Native American tribe(部落), for a long time. They are fighting to keep this way of fishing alive. But there are fewer and fewer wall eye fish in the lake because of warming waters, seasonal changes and lake development. Climate(气候)change is influencing the home of the fish. Walleye fish grow best in unclear waters. But because of long periods of dry weather, or drought, the flow of rivers into the lake has lessened. This leads to clearer water.
Losing this kind of fish would mean losing a food source for village members and a deep connection to tradition and nature.
People in the village say that with science and good management, they will be able to continue this tradition in the future. But there are also worries about the changes that are already happening.
People are finding ways to protect walleye fish and the fishing tradition. For walleye fishing, people are required to get permits(许可证)that control the number of fish they can take. And some lakes are filled with fish born in a hatchery(孵化场)and put into the lake. But in many cases, the goal is still to increase natural reproduction.
As inland lakes warm with climate change, tribe members experience the influences first. With their knowledge of the lakes, Bisonette and others who put their hopes in fishing with a spear will continue to fight for it.
For now, because of protection efforts, Martin, Bisonette’s father, catches enough fish in the traditional way to help feed elders in the village. He and others work long hours to get the fish ready and take it to them. Martin says he loves these visits because he gets to listen to stories of the elders.
8. What helps walleye fish grow well?
A. The enough food. B. The warm weather.
C. The unclear water. D. The traditional fishing methods.
9. What does the author mainly tell us in paragraph 4?
A. History of spear fishing. B. Worries about the wall eye fish’s situation.
C. Ways to protect walleye fish. D. Importance of following tradition.
10. Why does Martin work for a long time?
A. To prepare food for the old in the village.
B. To spread the importance of fish protection.
C. To teach others how to keep traditional fishing.
D. To share ancient stories with other tribe members.
11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Clean Water May Sometimes Mean No Fish
B. Technology Helps Save Traditional Culture
C. Traditional Fishing Methods Are Disappearing
D. Climate Change Influences Traditional Fishing

Researchers in Shanghai are developing a robot “guide dog” that could help blind people. The robot is now being tested in Shanghai.
The machine uses cameras and sensors (传感器) to sense its environment. It is able to recognize (辨认出) traffic lights which traditional guide dogs are unable to recognize. The robot can communicate by listening to and speaking with a blind person. The robot also uses artificial intelligence (AI) to recognize voices and plan ways to go from place to place.
The robot dog is about the size of an English bulldog but a little wider than a real dog. It has six legs instead of four because the researchers say the extra legs enhance its safety, making its movements smoother.
41-year-old Li Fei and 42-year-old Zhu Sibin are among the people with eye problems who are helping the Jiao Tong University team. They are testing the dog using Chinese-language instructions and providing their feedback (反馈) for the researchers to further develop the dog.
Li is completely blind while Zhu has little eyesight. Li normally uses a walking stick to walk. He said, “If this robot guide dog comes onto the market and I could use it, at least it could solve some of my problems in traveling alone.”
Robot guide dogs are also under development in Australia and Britain. But China needs a lot of traditional guide dogs. There are just over 400 guide dogs in China for nearly 20 million blind people.
Many workplaces, restaurants and public areas do not welcome a usual guide dog like a Labrador. The supply of real dogs is limited (限制) by feeding and training needs. The production of robot guide dogs could be increased to an industrial level, especially in a center of making industry like China. The researchers think there could be a large market for robot dogs as there might be tens of millions of people in the world who need guide dogs.
12. What is one advantage of the robot guide dog according to the text?
A. It can work at any time. B. It follows the traffic lights.
C. It costs much less to keep. D. It can find the way more easily.
13. What does the underlined word “enhance” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Report. B. Record. C. Show. D. Increase.
14. Why are Li Fei and Zhu Sibin mentioned in the text?
A. They prefer experiencing modern inventions.
B. They’re experts in developing robot guide dogs.
C. They play a part in improving robot guide dogs.
D. They depend on real guide dogs for traveling around.
15. What is the future of robot guide dogs like according to the researchers?
A. Worrying. B. Challenging. C. Uncertain. D. Hopeful.

I had many vegetable plants left over after having planted the ones that I needed in my garden. And as I couldn’t stand to just throw the left plants, I decided to hold a plant sale by the side of the road. I had 30 small tomato plants for a start as well as other young vegetable plants.
Within a few hours, I had gotten back the cost of growing the vegetables, and I could tell that passers- by were enjoying the cheap plants, so I went to look for more plants from the ones I hadn’t yet planted. In this way, the plants I sold increased a lot. Honestly, I could have sold twice as many, maybe the next year.
The most exciting thing happened on the first day when I was in the kitchen writing up the price list and noticed a car back into our driveway. I went out to find a young lady on her way to work and of course we began to talk. She told me that she worked at a centre for homeless children. Although they had a garden, it was filled with a lot of wild grass. She wanted to grow some plants to light it up. Besides, she wanted to grow green vegetables for her children to improve their living conditions.
Her kindness moved me. I told her it was a great idea. I advised her on how to prepare the soil, how to choose the types of vegetables, how to water them, and how to care for them. I also suggested that she ask the children to help her grow vegetables. She thanked me and said that my advice was very useful to her, which increased her confidence in growing vegetables well.

A. Report. B. Record. C. Show. D. Increase.

A. They prefer experiencing modern inventions.
B. They’re experts in developing robot guide dogs.
C. They play a part in improving robot guide dogs.
D. They depend on real guide dogs for traveling around.
15. What is the future of robot guide dogs like according to the researchers?

【19题详解】
由下文“Sugar levels can raise or lower your mood, but proper blood sugar keeps you balanced (平衡的). If you don’t take in enough nutrition (营养), you will feel unhappy, so healthier food choices will make sure that your body and brain run well.(血糖水平可以提高或降低你的情绪,但适当的血糖可以让你保持平衡。如果你没有摄入足够的营养,你会感到不快乐,所以选择更健康的食物会确保你的身体和大脑运转良好。)”可知,这里讲不足够的营养会让你不快乐,E项“Proper nutrition means that your body has enough energy to go every day.(适当的营养意味着你的身体每天都有足够的能量。)”符合语境,其中Proper nutrition与下文enough nutrition对应,有启下作用。故选E项。
【20题详解】
由上文“Being the largest part of your body, your skin is possibly most influenced by your poor food choices.(作为你身体最大的部分,你的皮肤可能受你糟糕的食物选择的影响最大。)”可知,这里主要讲糟糕的食物对你皮肤影响较大,D项“But a healthy diet will make you look younger than you really are.(但健康的饮食会让你看起来比实际年龄年轻。)”符合语境,其中 a healthy diet与上文your poor food choices形成对比,有承上作用,且与本段标题中心词“look younger”相呼应。故选D项。

Volunteering at the Pet Rescue Center
Last weekend, I visited a pet rescue center, a haven dedicated to saving and nurturing abandoned or injured animals. The center is run by a group of passionate volunteers who provide medical care, food, and shelter to the animals in need.
During my visit, I helped feed the animals, clean their enclosures, and assist the staff with basic care tasks.

【答案】At the same time, I decided to try my best to make her wish come true. I told her that I still had many left plants that she could plant them in her garden. Hearing this, the lady felt very pleased, thanking me again and again. I collected all the lefted plants that I had planned to sell and gave them to the lady. Then I showed then how to plant them step by step, the lady listening with attention like an eager student. Half an hour later, when the lady was ready to leave, I prepared some fertilizer that she could use to plant the plants and gave it to her. The lady left with all the plants and fertilizer.
About six months later, that woman invited me to her center. She led me to her garden where I saw many types vegetables that grew well. With all the vegetables, the garden that used to be filled with a lot of wild grass lighted up. Then she told me how she planted them and watered them. Obviously she had become a good gardener. She told me that when the vegetables were harvested the homeless children would have more fresh vegetables to eat. Hearing this, I felt very proud of her. She also told me that the children in the center learned a lot by helping grow and care for the vegetables in the garden. I admired her for what she had done for the center and the children from the bottom of my heart.
