Unit5 Off to space
单元主题(宇宙探索)完形填空18篇
Scientists are very interested in the universe, and they always want to know more about it. Years ago they knew many things about 1 Moon. They knew how big it was and how far 2 was from the Earth. 3 they still wanted to know more. They thought that the best way was to send planes 4 the Moon. The Moon is about 384,000 kilometres away from the Earth. A common (普通的) plane 5 fly to the Moon because the air reaches only 240 kilometres away from the Earth. But something can fly even 6 there is no air. That is the rocket (火箭).
How can a rocket fly? If you want 7 ,get a balloon (气球) and then blow it up until it is quite big. Do not tie up the neck of the balloon, but let it go! The balloon will fly off through the air very 8 . It doesn’t need wings (翅膀) like a plane.
There is gas (气体) in the rocket so it can fly out into space. 9 with men in them can go to the Moon. Several rockets, without men in them, can also go to other places much farther away than the Moon. Someday, rockets may be able to go to any place 10 space.

Li Jun is a middle school student. He is now studying in Grade 7 in a middle school in Nanan, Chongqing. He has had lots of 1 since he was little. But as time goes by there is only one dream still in his mind.
Li Jun says when he was a child, he 2 rockets and spaceships. At first, he didn’t know what they were. From his father, he started to know that scientists make 3 to carry people and things into space. He was very 4 about it and became very interested in space. He started to collect information to learn about this 5 space. It 6 him much time to know the knowledge. Every time he sees beautiful stars and the moon in the sky at night, he gets very excited. He is always dreaming that he can 7 with zero gravity in space and 8 around the earth one day.
In school, Li Jun learned that the first man flew into space in 1961, and later, more astronauts made it successful to travel into space. Some astronauts even 9 on the moon. His teacher always tells him to learn more. He knows not everyone can travel into space. More importantly, before he can fly to space, he must be trained specially.
Li Jun knows it’s not easy to make his dream come true, but he has his 10 to try his best. He says, “I’ve had this dream for many years. It brings me a lot of happiness and always makes me study harder. Even if it doesn’t come true in the end, I won’t be sorry.”

How big is space? How many stars are there? Is there anyone living out there? Many people may have a lot of 1 about space. To find out the answers, men and women from different countries have become astronauts. One of them is Yang Liwei, China’s first astronaut (宇航员) to travel into space. His space trip on 15 October, 2003 made China the 2 country to launch a human into space, after Russia and the United States.
Do you want to be an astronaut like Yang Liwei? In his 3 at Beijing University, he talked about how to become an astronaut. Here are some of his 4 .
First, you must learn to 5 models because it teaches us how things work. It’s useful to practise putting different model parts together. You will become good at it. This engineering 6 may help you understand spaceship better.
Second, you must keep healthy and strong. The training(训练)for an astronaut is very 7 . Astronauts have to go through hundreds of hours of difficult and tiring training before they can fly in space. Even in space, they’ll have to exercise two hours a day because astronauts may get 8 without gravity.
Third, you must learn to 9 a plane. Many astronauts are pilots(飞行员)before they go into space. Take Yang Liwei as an example. He flew more than 200 different kinds of planes during his career. It is a dangerous job, but very 10 .
At the end of his speech, he hoped that the students could take a wonderful trip to space in the near future.

Mr Wu: Boys and girls, yesterday I asked you to collect some information about China’s Tianwen 1 probe (探测器). Let’s see what you’ve 1 .
Li Ping: I downloaded something. May I use the PPT, Mr. Wu?
Mr Wu: Sure. Go ahead.
Li Ping: Look at this picture. On May 15, China’s Tianwen 1 probe made a historic landing (登陆) on Mars (火星)! Following the US, China is now the 2 country in the world to 3 land a probe on Mars. It will give Chinese 4 their first chance (机会) to study the Red Planet (行星) closely.
Gu Yue: 5 was Tianwen 1 probe sent?
Li Ping: In July 2020. The probe entered Mars orbit (轨道) in February 2021.
Experts (专家) said the difficulty of sending the probe into orbit was equal to (等于) hitting a small ball from Paris and landing it in a hole in Tokyo. And the final landing was even 6 .
He Mei: I hear it’s 7 called the “nine minutes of terror (恐怖)”
Li Ping: Yes. In nine minutes, the probe had to reduce its 8 from 20,000km per hour to zero, landing from 125km above Mars. As the probe is 320 million km away from Earth, there is a signal delay (延迟) of over10 minutes if the research team tries to control it from Earth. So the probe had to carry out the landing on its own!
Gu Yue: That’s amazing!
Li Ping: Indeed. When the probe finally slowed down at 100 metres above Mars, it stayed in the air and check the landing area. It had to move away from the objects in its way such as rocks, 9 finally touching down.
Mr Wu: Well done, Li Ping! Thank you for showing our 10 Tianwen 1 probe. Let’s see who has something else to share...

Humans might live on another planet one day! That seemed 1 years ago. But now the idea might come true. Stephen Hawking, a great British scientist, said that we humans only have 1,000 years to live on the earth. It means that humans will 2 to another planet in 1,000 years.
In fact, we have found one red planet—Mars. Mars is the fourth planet from the sun and it’s 3 to Earth, but it’s much colder than Earth. For many years, scientists have studied Mars.
Some years ago, they 4 robots there and wanted to find water and life on Mars. 5 , they found that there is water on it. Then the idea of living on Mars looks possible.
In 2013, Dutch scientists first planned to put 6 on Mars in the 2030s. They offered (提供) people one-way tickets to go and build new homes on Mars. 7 it was dangerous, over 200, 000 people still wanted to take part in (参加).
American scientists showed another plan to get humans to Mars in 2033. They are working on building larger 8 to fly to Mars these days. They are also doing a lot of preparations to help people 9 the earth.
I believe that humans will go to Mars and have an even closer look 10 our red neighbor.

In 4 morning, I often say hello to the Earth first. We 5 eat meals (饭) just like you do at home. And all the food is dry. Food without water is hard 6 . So we sometimes put it 7 water before eating. And drinking is not easy. We often work for long hours. So we have 8 early and go to bed late. But life in space 9 never boring. In our free time, we can read and listen to music. I always want to be an astronaut. One day, my uncle gave me a book about space and I read it carefully. At night after I fell asleep, I had the most wonderful 1 about travelling into space!
It was just like the real thing and I didn’t want to wake up so 2 !
In a big facility, I wore a 3 and waited. Later, someone took me to the spaceship.
The spaceship was so big. I 4 it. There were many things in it, just like a room on Earth!
I could float around because the gravity in space was 5 . How amazing it was!
It was also great to see the Earth from space. It looked like a large round blue ball. I kept flying 6 and saw many stars far from the Earth. I was curious about the life there.
Maybe someday we will 7 to one of the stars and live there.
The spaceship was going to stop on a planet. Then I 8 someone calling me, “It’s time to get up and get ready for school! Or you will be 9 for class!” Well, it was my mum. My trip was going to 10 with her words. It was a nice trip. I hoped we could take a real trip to space one day.

July 4, 2021 was an important day in space for China. At 14:57, taikonauts (航天员) Liu Boming and Tang Hongbo returned to their module (舱) Tianhe, after 1 for about seven hours in space.
Such space walking by taikonauts will be 2 for future space work. It is because there are many jobs that require human action, such as 3 cameras on the space station’s surface (表面), keeping the surface clean, and many others.
There are two main 4 that make the space walking possible. One is the mechanical arm (机械臂) to help taikonauts 5 of their module and reach wherever they need to reach. The taikonauts’ ability to walk in space 6 shows great progress in China’s mechanical arm technology (科技、技术).
The other technology is the new-generation space suit that protects the taikonauts from the changing temperatures. The suit also helps them fight 7 the strong space rays.
The success of the first space walk by taikonauts shows China has made technological progress in space industry. And behind taikonauts are many 8 and hundreds of thousands of other workers. They do their jobs well to get the taikonauts into space and make sure of their 9 return. The efforts of them have changed “taikonaut” from just a word into a fact, and all of them should share the honor and the 10 . A bright future for the Chinese space industry is coming!
