Along the Zhongshan South Road in Nanjing, there are 38 plane trees wearing new colorful “sweaters”. The creative works, which are designed by the students of Nanjing Foreign Language School (NFLS) and knitted (编织) by artists, bring much warmth to the city in autumn.
The activity was named “Our Plane Trees”. To get the designs, art group teachers at NFLS thought of five topics: traditional culture, respect to the artists, environmental awareness (意识), dreams in outer space, and the future world. In the end, nearly 200 works were sent in. Knitting artists chose 38 works to knit and dress up the plane trees.

She was surprised to see that in the final knitting works, the artists added some blue and white flowers. “They made me feel the coming of spring,” said she.
The sweaters didn’t use any chemical materials, not even glue. After the show, students will recycle the wool. They can do more things with it. “The art is environmentally friendly, and it makes our city lives warmer and more colorful,” said Xia Xin, one of the knitting artists.

Recently, some small colorful felt (毛毡) flowers have appeared in a few cities in China. You may find them in places where there had earlier been cracks (裂缝), such as on walls or stone steps.
These artworks (艺术品) are part of a project called “Flowers to Mend”. It was started by Luo Shengtian, an art student in Guangzhou. In early April, he began using felt flowers to mend cracks in a village near his university.
Luo says it is not difficult to make such pieces of art. He usually makes a flower and a layer (层) of grass out of felt in advance (提前). After he arrives at the site (地点), he cleans the crack and fills it with clay (陶土). He then sticks the stem (茎) of the felt flower into the clay. And the final step is to cover the clay with the felt grass.
After Luo shared his project online, many people from different cities have joined him in his work. Some have used other materials, such as knitting thread (针织线) and pottery clay, to mend the cracks in their neighborhoods.
Besides, Luo has also posted a guide online to teach people how they can make their own felt flowers. Would you like to give it a try, or do you have other great ideas for “mending” your city?

Most people remember their childhood by looking at old photos or videos. But for some, they choose to remember it by making models of their old homes where they grew up.
Du Yi, a Chinese miniature artist, used to make models of historic buildings. One day, a friend asked him to make a model of his old home in the countryside. He thought it was meaningful, so he helped. After he posted a short video online, it went viral. He won thousands of followers. Today, he has over 200,000 followers online.
Du often makes the miniature (微缩模型) house 30 times smaller than its real size. It usually takes him one to two months to make a model with the pictures provided by customers. Hundreds of small pieces and about 50 different materials, including wood, paper, and materials straight from nature are used. He often visits the villages to take a closer look at the details. He can spend the whole week studying one building, trying to understand the story, shapes and colors. “I have to be very careful about the details. If they are good, the work will come to life.” Du says. His miniature houses are sold at a starting price of around 20,000 yuan.

If you’ve never heard of mineral-color painting (岩彩画), you’re not alone. This form of art is unknown to most people—even many art lovers. It is an ancient form of painting that is being given new life these days.
This kind of art is created using materials like rock powder (粉末), colored soil and sand. It can be traced back to the 3rd-century Kucha Grotto murals (龟兹石窟壁画) of Xinjiang. Yet after the Song and Yuan dynasties, with ink wash painting becoming more and more popular, mineral-color art gradually fell out of fashion.
During the Sui and Tang dynasties, some countries sent envoys (使节) to China to learn all kinds of things. “They loved mineral-color art and took the art form back to their own country,” said Miao Tong. The artist has been studying this traditional art form for years.
In the 1980s, many Chinese artists decided to revive this traditional art form in China. In the 1990s, they renamed it “mineral-color art”.
For Miao, the greatest joy in his work is to find the “right earth” to make mineral pigments (颜料). “Every year I go to Wuyi Mountain. It is known for its Danxia land formation (丹霞地貌),” he said. “You can’t imagine how beautiful the earth is there. It is naturally colored in red, green, yellow, purple, etc.”
But this soil cannot be directly applied to his works. It first has to go through a number of steps, including washing, filtering (过滤) and sun-drying. After that the soil will be mixed together with a certain kind of glue. According to the artist, one mineral-color painting may take several weeks to several months to complete.
The mineral pigments are able to stay safe from the effects of UV light (紫外线). Therefore, their color does not fade (褪色) over time. That’s why, even after thousands of years, the cave paintings in the Kucha Grottos are still very bright and colorful.

Where do you paint? Maybe you can paint on paper, on a piece of cloth and even on the wall. But have you ever thought of creating pictures in the fields? In Anhui, every year farmers plant different kinds and colours of rice to “make” pictures in the fields. This is rice paddy art (稻田画).
Some villages were trying to do something to help the farmers make more money. They needed a way to attract tourists and then the rice field art came into being. During the first few years, the farmers created simple pictures. Later they were able to make more complex (复杂的) ones.
Every April, the villagers meet and decide what to plant for the year. Before planting, farmers make the pictures on computers to work out where and how to plant the rice. After that, farmers plant different kinds of rice in different areas of fields. When rice grows tall, different colors will come out in the fields.
Now, the countryside in Anhui has become one of the most popular places of interest for both the young and old. So what are you waiting for? Just bring your camera, come and enjoy the beauty of nature for yourself!

Chuanjiang Chants (川江号子) is a form of folk singing performed by Chuanjiang boatmen in order to unify their movements and rhythms (节奏). Chongqing and eastern Sichuan are the main birthplaces of the Chuanjiang Chants.
In the age of wooden boat shipping for thousands of years, the power (动力) of wooden boats on the river came from the body of the boatmen. Whenever they headed up against the river or when the boat crossed a shoal, the boatmen had to pull together. Moreover, the long journey was boring and boatmen needed something to relax, and the Chuanjiang Chants appeared.
Chuanjiang Chants is both technical and artistic. Boatmen control the direction of the boat just like a driver is responsible for that of a car. And chants are like the accelerator (油门) of a car, controlling the speed of the boat. Therefore, the chants can adjust (调整) the force of the boatmen through their rhythm, so that the ship can move forward smoothly (平稳地). At the same time, the chants are always sung in a bright voice, a good tone, and a beautiful sound. Therefore, it is also an art.
However, with the development and popularity of modern ships, Chuanjiang Chants is likely to be forgotten by people, facing an endangered situation. Our country paid great attention to the protection of it and it was included in the first national intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) list. Hope that more and more people can get the chance to know the wonderful culture.

B.Because the chants can adjust the force of the boatmen.
C.Because the chants can control the direction of the boat.
D.Because the chants can be sung in a bright and beautiful voice.
4.What is the writer’s purpose of writing the passage?
A.To let more people know and remember the culture of Chuanjiang Chants.
B.To introduce how Chuanjiang Chants appeared.
C.To encourage readers to experience Chuanjiang Chants themselves.
D.To bring readers back to the old times.
Painting and writing on walls is nothing new. In prehistoric times, people in Africa and Europe painted pictures of animals and people in caves. Graffiti (涂鸦) has been found at ancient sites in Greece, Italy, Syria and Iraq. In the Roman town of Pompeii in Italy, archaeologists (考古学家) found a lot of graffiti written in Latin, including political and romantic messages, and even some magic spells!
In the 1970s, young people in New York used pens to write their names, or “tags”, on walls around the city. One of the first “taggers” was Demetrius, a teenager from a Greek family. He wrote his tag on walls in his neighborhood and in subway stations on the way to school. Other teenagers saw Demetrius’s tag and started writing their own tags on walls, buses and subway trains all over New York. Their tags were bigger and more colorful and appeared on trains, buses and walls around the world. In the 1990s and 2000s, a lot of graffiti artists started to make pictures, too.
In many countries, it is a crime to paint on walls and street artists can have problems with the police. In other countries, street art is permitted (准许) in certain places. Nowadays, street art is more popular with the public. In some cities, there are street art festivals. In Bristol in the UK, there is a street art festival in August every year. Artists paint all the buildings in a street. Lots of people come to watch the artists and take photos. Street art can be seen in galleries (美术馆), too. Many young street artists use the Internet to communicate and share their works with others.

Shen Yingbiao is a xiao player. Although he had strong interests in musical instruments from childhood, it is the xiao that has been the most important part of his life.
Not long after Shen was first attracted (吸引) to the instrument, he decided to learn it. In the 1990s, when Internet was not widespread in China, learning a less popular instrument was not an easy task because there were few teachers.
Besides teaching himself and listening to tapes to compare and improve, Shen stepped on trips to visit those who gave fascinating performances he heard on tapes, and received tutoring (指导) from masters in this area.
Since he had to study at school and then work to support himself, he could only undertake such trips in his spare time. “It was very tiring. Without high-speed trains, I had to take a train for more than 20 hours to Beijing, or other places, to visit people. But I was resolute to take this road. I wanted to improve my skills and learn more,” says Shen.
While learning the instrument, Shen was increasingly fascinated by the rich cultural meanings in the xiao. According to him, a scene from a TV series of a literate (有文化的) person piping (吹奏) the xiao in the moonlight, full of elegance (优雅), poetry and romance, has been kept in his heart since childhood. And that reflects the close relationship between this instrument and the literate in times gone by.
In ancient China, bamboo symbolized honesty, modesty (谦虚) and a spirit of trying to make progress. As a result, many liked the plant and used it to refer to their pursuits (追求) in poems. Song Dynasty (960-1279) poet Su Shi once wrote, “Better to eat without meat than live without bamboo”, suggesting the importance of bamboo in their hearts.
Therefore, the xiao, made of bamboo, was much more than an instrument, but something they often held in hands or put on walls to remind themselves of their pursuits, and they sometimes used the xiao to refer to themselves in poems as well, according to Shen.
“Since the Tang Dynasty (618-907), the xiao was often used in gatherings and meetings of the educated and literate, just like the guqin. It was so popular then that if one was not able to perform it, they were regarded as old-fashioned,” says Shen.
During his learning process, Shen summarized his experience, which paved (铺平) the way for his later teaching. In 2000, with the growth of his fame, he was invited to teach dongxiao, a kind of xiao popular in the Jiangnan area of China, at an art school in Hangzhou. A year later, he set up the Xixi Xiao Society with his students to better promote (推广) the instrument.

Many artists draw with pens and brushes, but few “paint” with knives. Wang Jing, a woman from Shenyang, China, has given most of her time and energy to this art form for 27 years. In 1995, Wang got the idea by chance when she cut a piece of red paper using a knife and it left a white line. Then she believed that she might have created something out of common things. After that, using knives and paper, she completed a painting of a pair of birds. People usually “add” colors to create paintings, but knife painters use knives to “take away” colors on specially made coated paper. They use different pressure on the paper in different directions (方向) to create different colors. Once the marks are left on the paper, they cannot be covered, so it requires the painter to be completely lost in the work.
Few people knew the great art form just after Wang created it. Besides, Wang herself was not expecting to make it something big at the beginning. But thanks to her love for the art form, she has kept painting for the past 27 years. So far, she has completed hundreds of paintings, and her favorite is a 2.8-meter-long painting. Wang said she would continue working in the field and make it known across the world.

Feng then posted a video of this miniature online, which soon went viral. People around the country who watched the video with familiar feelings for their old houses got in touch with him, asking him to make house models according to the photos they provided. Making miniatures is not an easy job. It usually takes Feng about 10 days to finish one miniature. He makes them in a ratio (比例) of 1:30 to the real size. To better remake the old house, he uses real building materials, such as cement(水泥), wood, and soil and then focuses on how to make it look old.
________. One of his customers, a post-90s girl, once asked him to reproduce an old house in her hometown. She used to live there with her parents. She wanted to give the model to her mother to keep alive the memory of her deceased(过世的) father.

Damoqiu was listed in 2016 as an intangible cultural heritage in Longlin county, Guangxi.
Master’s story
For the Yi ethnic group, damoqiu is a traditional sport and celebration during festivals. Li Jingming started playing it at the age of 5.
“Many people simply play damoqiu for fun,” said the 61-year-old. “Yet, taking it as a professional sport is more a game of bravery (勇敢).”
According to Li, since the horizontal pole only hangs on the standing pole, it’s always spinning (旋转), making it hard for performers to keep balance. “If you’re lacking in strength, it’s easy to tilt (倾斜) and you may even slip down from the pole. Sometimes, it’s even dangerous”, added Li.
Besides bravery, as a professional sport, damoqiu also needs great effort and patience.
Training for a new posture sometimes requires more than 10 days. “Repetition (重复) is part of our daily routine (惯例). Though it’s boring, it is worth our effort to keep the tradition alive,” Li said.
As more and more young people leave villages to earn money in the big cities, they have less time to train on the pole and develop new postures. “It’s a pity that damoqiu is disappearing from the competitive stage now”, said Li, adding that he has only had five disciples (徒弟) in training during the last fifty years.
To make damoqiu known to more people, Li not only teaches it in schools voluntarily, but also perform in many competitions to show the sport’s charm (魅力).
“As long as I live, I will continue the mission (使命) of passing on the skills of damoqiu to future generations,” said Li.

1.How did Shen improve his xiao skills?
① By teaching himself. ② By going on trips.
③ By visiting the masters. ④ By listening to tapes.
A.①②③ B.②③④ C.①②④ D.①③④
2.Why did the writer mention Su Shi and his poem in paragraph 6?
A.To state a fact. B.To give an example. C.To express a feeling. D.To show an opinion.
3.What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.A man who loves the xiao deeply. B.An instrument that is less popular.

“Many people simply play damoqiu for fun,” said the 61-year-old. “Yet, taking it as a professional sport is more a game of bravery (勇敢).”
