Lesson 52 Mud is mud 1、My cousin, Harry, keeps a large curiously-shaped bottle on permanent display in his study. Despite the fact(that the bottle is tinted a delicate shade of green同位语从句), an observant visitor would soon notice (that it is filled with what looks like a thick, grayish substance. · mud (n.) 泥浆 · Slang:Mud is mud. · cousin (n.) 永久的,永恒的 反:temporary(adj.) 临时的,暂时的 eg. a permanent job 固定工作 permanent adress 固定地址 · on display 展示,展出,展览 = on show · Despite (prep.) 尽管 = In spite of · tint (v.) Leaves were tinted in autumn colours. · delicate (adj.) Please choos a lighter shade. If he had come yesterday,… = Had he come yesterday,… 2、If you were to ask Harry (what was in the bottle宾语从句), he would tell you (that it contained perfumed mud宾语从句). If you expressed doubt or surprise, he would immediately invite you to smell it and then to rub some into your skin. · rub (v.) 摩擦 —— rubber (n.) 3、This brief experiment would dispel any further doubts (you might have定语从句). The bottle really does(起强调作用) contain perfumed mud. (How Harry came into the possession of this outlandish stuff主语从句)makes an interesting story (which he is fond of relating). Furthermore, the acquisition of this bottle cured him of a bad habit (he had been developing for years定语从句). · repel (v.) His yellowish hair repels his mother. His words/remarks repelled me. · dispel (v.) 消除,打消 eg. dispel one’s doubt 消除某人的疑虑 dispel one’s horror/ worry 消除某人的恐惧/担忧 dispel rumor/stress 消除流言/压力 · come into the possession of 拥有,占有 = be in possession of = possess = own eg. 他拥有大量枪支。 He comes into possession of a large number of guns. = He is in possession of a large number of guns. · be in the possession of 被占有,被拥有 · outlandish (adj.) 物品,东西 · be fond of 喜欢 = like · relate (v.) 叙述 · relate sth. to sb. · Furthermore (adv.) 4、Harry used to consider it a great joke to go into expensive cosmetic shops and make outrageous requests for goods (that do not exist定语从句). He would invent fanciful names on the spot. · cosmetic (adj.) 美容的 (n.) 化妆品 · outrageous (adj.) 令人无法容忍的 · used to consider 过去常常… would invent 过去常常… · fanciful (adj.) 精致的 (eg. a fancy dress party) (v.) 想要 (1)fancy sth. = want sth. If a shop assistant told him she had not heard of it, he would pretend to be considerably put out. He loved to be told (that one of his imaginary products was temporarily out of stock and he would faithfully promise to call again at some future date), but of course he never did. (How Harry managed to keep a straight face during these performances主语从句)is quite beyond me. · On doing… 当(介词短语充当连词,引导时间状语从句) = When · would ask for = used to ask for · scented (adj.) 想象 imagination(n.) 想象 imaginative (adj.)富有想象力的 · out of shock 缺货,库存不足 · call at + sp. 参观某地 = visit sp. call on + sb. · beyond me = beyond my understanding 超出我的理解范围 beyond your imagination = beyond your fancy 超出你的想象 6、Harry does not need to be prompted to explain (how he bought his precious bottle of mud). One day, he went to an exclusive shop in London and asked for ‘Myrolite', the shop assistant looked puzzled and Harry repeated the word, slowly stressing each syllable. · prompt (v.) 促成,激励 · prompt sb. to do sth. The failure of the exam prompted him to study hard. · exclude (v.) 7、(When the woman shook her head in bewilderment时间状语从句), Harry went on to explain (that ‘myrolite' was a hard, amber-like substance (which could be used to remove freckles)宾语从句/定语从句). This explanation evidently conveyed something to the woman (who searched shelf after shelf定语从句). She produced all sorts of weird concoctions, but none of them met with Harry's requirements. · bewilderment (n.) 困惑 bewilder (v.) 使困惑 (新三L:38 The first canlendar) bewildered (adj.) 感到困惑 · go on to explain 继续解释 = continue to explain · freckle(n.) 传达,传送 · all sorts of = all kinds of 各种各样的 · weird (adj.) 奇怪的,古怪的 = strange · concoction(n.) 调和物 · meet with 满足 = satisfy (v.) 8、(When Harry put on his act of being mildly annoyed时间状语从句), the assistant promised to order some for him. Intoxicated by his success, Harry then asked for perfumed mud. He expected the assistant to look at him in blank astonishment. · put on an act of doing sth. 温和地,稍微地 · be intoxicated by 被陶醉 9、However, it was his turn to be surprised, (for the woman's eyes immediately lit up and she fetched several bottles (which she placed on the counter for Harry to inspect原因状语从句/定语从句). For once, Harry had to admit defeat. He picked up (what seemed to be the smallest bottle and discreetly asked the price). · it is one’s turn 轮到某人 · light up 变得喜悦(light lit lit) · discreetly (adv.) 小心谨慎地 = very carefully 10、He was glad to get away with a mere twenty pounds and he beat a hasty retreat, clutching the precious bottle under his arm. From then on, Harry decided (that this little game (he had invented定语从句) might prove to be expensive宾语从句). The curious bottle, (which now adorns the bookcase in his study定语从句), was his first and last purchase of rare cosmetics. · beat a hasty retreat 仓惶而逃,匆匆离开 · clutch (v.) 抓紧 · adorn (v.) 装修,装饰 (书) = decorate (口) Supplementary exercises: · As we sat around the campfire after supper, Rob noticed two figures come out of the forest and walk toward us.
