It is hard to tell you the way I felt about my first day of high school, but if you know how it went, then you may understand.
I woke up in the morning excited but nervous, as today was the day I would begin my journey of high school. Thousands of thoughts rushed through my mind “Will I fit in? Will I make friends? Will I have nice teachers? Will I be bullied (欺凌)?” When I panicked, my mum assured me I would be fine if I followed school rules.
Off I went in my uniform, hoping for the best possible outcome (结果). We met at the school hall with welcoming smiles. I could feel the tension, but I was not the only one feeling this way.
We then had a tour of the school. Then, we headed for our first class to meet our classmates. I was happy with my class, as no kid in my class was mean to one another.
As the lunch bell rang, chaos arose — kids rushing in all directions to the dining hall, hoping not to get caught in the line-up. I went and sat down with my friends from last year. We chatted about our holidays and what their first lesson of high school was like. Before we knew it, we were back in class.
We got to know our teachers a bit more — we had the best teachers of all. The teachers were strict with us in class, but they were friendly and nice. Before I knew it, the day was over. I don’t know why I panicked or was frightened at all. High school may seem scary but it’s just like primary or kindergarten. My first day of high school taught me: I shouldn’t be so quick as to judge about something I haven’t even tried. I love high school now, it’s the best thing of all. I hope your first day will be one of the best days of your life too.

As I cried in a hotel room in Osaka, a phone pressed to my right ear, my father was giving me his final advice from his death bed in Ireland. The man who inspired me to become a travel journalist wanted to remind me I had the best job in the world.
While “don’t stop” was his last message to me, “won’t stop” could have been his motto (座右铭). Even as he entered his late 60s, badly affected by a physical disability, my father continued to travel. Not package holidays or lying in a hammock (吊床). Instead, he explored foreign cities on foot until they seeped into his pores. Adventures were what he desired.
Once I began traveling with my father 15 years ago, small talk invariably transitioned to discussion of our next journey. I loved few things more than surprising him with a new trip I’d booked for us. This was how our final adventure began.
In our Athens apartment, I found his feet swelled up (肿胀) enormously. His ankles had given him constant discomfort. Whenever I suggested we take a break, he’d say: “You can sit down if you want; I’ve got something I want to go see over there.” His physical limitations were simply overpowered by his desire to experience something new. He walked all over Bucharest, Athens, and Rome. By the end of the trip, his mind could no longer override his body. His left ankle was twice the size of his right. His chest was congested(充血的).
Dad spent weeks in hospital back in Ireland. He was completely paralyzed (瘫痪的), unable to see or talk or eat. Yet, he remained conscious. Doctors encouraged us to chat to him, even though he could not respond. Day after day, I sat by his hospital bed and talked about our funniest moments while traveling. Eventually, he came out of his paralysis. When doctors said he was almost ready to go home, I took the chance to fly to Asia for my journalism job.
Then, in the middle of a cold night, my phone rang. Our final conversation took place. Jokes were exchanged, and promises were made. Among them was my agreement that I wouldn’t stop traveling.

The world’s elderly population is increasing fast. The number of older people-those who are 60 years of age or older-is expected to double by 2050 across the world. This comes with an increasing need for caregivers that are able to provide 24-hour care, not only at hospitals or nursing homes, but also at private homes.
Robotic assistants (助手) are expected to become increasingly popular and reach 450, 000 by 2045 because the expected caregivers are not enough in the United States. “Unluckily, the hard outside structure of caregiving robots nowadays prevents them from communicating with humans safely and easily,” said Ramses Martinez, a professor in the School of Industrial Engineering. “After all, would you leave the old people with health problems in the hands of a robot?”
However, recent progress in material science has made it possible to produce robots with the ability to reshape when touched. They are called soft robots. However, the design (设计), production, and control of soft robots now stop this technology being put into use. Recently Martinez and other Purdue University researchers have developed a new design method that can make the design and production of the soft robots easy by using a 3D printer.
The soft robots can move like humans. “They can complete some movements easily such as holding things, spreading or drawing back arms and legs and kneeing down. This invention moves a big step forward toward the development of lightweight soft robots,” Martinez said. There searchers are now looking for partners to test their technology and put it into practice.
8. What will be the result of the increasing elderly population according to the text?
A. More nursing services will be needed. B. More hospitals will be built in the future.
C. More people will choose to be nursed at home. D. More nursing work will be carried out by robots
9. What does Ramses Martinez mean in Paragraph 2?
A. People doubt the ability of robotic assistants.
B. More types of robotic assistants need to be developed.
C. The robotic assistants nowadays aren’t perfect for nursing.
D. The robotic assistants can’t understand the elderly correctly.
10. What makes the new type of robot be able to change shapes?
A. A special material. B. The production method.
C. The 3D printing technology. D. A newly developed design method.
11. What’s the best title for the text?
A. The development of robots is rapid. B. The 3D printer can create soft robots
C. The increasing elderly population is a problem. D. Robots created with 3D printers will nurse the elderly.
D
Yesterday, people on the social media site Twitter reacted with surprise and humor to a report that claimed, “Scientists have taught spinach to send emails.” That’s not exactly true, but the “news” is based on some amazing work done by MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) scientists in 2016, and it’s still worth learning about.
Scientists at MIT have managed to change ordinary spinach plants into natural sensors which can detect chemicals used in bombs. Using a cheap and small computer system, the spinach can even send a warning email.
The secret to giving spinach these special powers is nanotechnology. For this experiment, the scientists placed two different kinds of nanotech materials into spinach plants: some were tiny sensors; others were tiny tubes called carbon nanotubes. To get the tiny materials into the plants, the scientists put a liquid containing the nano-materials on the bottom of the plants’ leaves. That’s where the plants normally take in CO2 gas.
Once the tiny sensors and nanotubes were in the spinach leaves, the plants did the rest of the work. As part of their natural process, the spinach plants pull water through their roots and into their leaves. If the water contains certain chemicals that are used in bombs, the sensors in the leaves make the nanotubes give off a slightly different kind of light.
By watching the plants constantly using a camera attached to a cheap computer, the scientists set up a system that can send a warning email if chemicals from explosives are detected in the water.
The researchers say it takes about 10 minutes for the plants to react to the chemicals. The computer the scientists used is about the size of a playing card. They say that in the future, their system could even use a cellphone with its camera changed slightly.
Detecting chemicals used in bombs is just one of the many uses the researchers are exploring. The scientists believe that in the future, such a system could give farmers detailed information about the health of the land and water on their farms.
12. Why is the report mentioned in the first paragraph?
A. To tell a joke made by MIT scientists. B. To introduce the health benefits of spinach.
C. To criticize misleading news on social media. D. To bring up the topic of a scientific experiment.
13. What is the function carton nanotubes in spinach leaves?
A. To supply energy to spinach. B. To detect spinach’s lack of water.
C. To measure CO2 absorbed by spinach. D. To make spinach shine in a special way.
14. What do the scientists expect of their system?
A. It will take effect immediately. B. It will be applied to agriculture.
C. It will be expanded to other plants. D. It will use a playing card-sized cellphone.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. Scientists teach spinach to send work emails.
B. Scientists create spinach that can test for bombs.
C. Scientists change the composition of spinach we eat.
D. Scientists use nanotechnology to boost spinach production.

【答案】1. C 2. B 3. A
根据文章第二段“I woke up in the morning, excited but nervous, as today was the day I would begin my journey of high school. Thousands of thoughts rushed through my mind “Will I fit in? Will I make friends? Will I have nice teachers? Will I be bullied (欺凌)?” (我早上醒来,既兴奋又紧张,因为今天是我开始高中生活的日子。成千上万的思绪涌上心头:“我能适应吗?我能交到朋友吗?我会遇到好老师吗?我会被欺负吗?”)”可知,作者一开始感到紧张是因为她对即将开始的高中生活充满了不确定性和担忧。故选C。
【2题详解】
词句猜测题。结合语境,再根据划线单词所在句“As the lunch bell rang, chaos arose — kids rushing in all directions to the dining hall, hoping not to get caught in the line-up.

A. He worked as a journalist.
B. He was a man of strong will.
C. He desired to be a famous explorer.
D. He enjoyed hiking in the mountains.
6. What did the author do while keeping his dad company in hospital?
A. He told stories to his dad.
B. He planned their next trip.
C. He assisted his dad to do exercise.
D. He looked back on their time spent together.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. My dad, the explorer

D. Scientists use nanotechnology to boost spinach production.

enough+名词+to do sth表示“有足够的……去做某事”,空处应为不定式作定语,修饰bread,故填to feed。
【43题详解】
考查时态。句意:Sam今年将毕业,我越来越觉得有必要顺便去面包店感谢这位善良的女士。根据this year可知是将来的时间,所以用一般将来时will graduate,故填will graduate。

John and Bob joined a company together right after they graduated from college. Both of them worked very hard. Several years later, the boss promoted (提升) Bob to senior manager, but John remained a common worker, John could not take it anymore, so he told the boss that he wanted to give up the job. He also thought that the boss did not value the hardworking members of staff but only promoted those who said nice things to please him.
The boss knew that John had worked very hard all these years. He thought for a moment and said, “Thank you for your criticism (批评), but I hope you will do one more thing for our company before you leave. And perhaps you will change your decision and choose to continue working here.”
John agreed. The boss asked him to go and find someone selling watermelons in the market. John went out and returned soon. He said he had found a man selling watermelons. The boss asked about the price. John shook his head and went back to the market to ask that man and returned to tell the boss.
The boss told John to wait a second, and then he called Bob into his office. He asked Bob to do the same task. Several hours later, Bob returned and told his boss that there was only one man selling watermelons in the market. The price was $1 per kilogram. One could buy watermelons cheaply if he bought more than 10 kilograms. The seller had about 300 melons, the average (平均) of which weighed about 5 kilograms. They were of good quality, fresh, red and juicy, and were transported from the south two days before.
John was very impressed and saw the difference between Bob and himself.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 The same day, John realized that he had been missing the bigger picture. He had been focusing on his tasks but not on the overall goals and details that could benefit the company. He understood that promotion was not just about hard work, but also about attention to detail, initiative, and the ability to provide valuable insights. John decided to stay and learn from Bob, to improve his approach to work and to become more proactive in his role.
A year later, John also got promoted. He had taken the lesson to heart. His efforts to understand the business better, to ask more questions, and to provide comprehensive reports had not gone unnoticed. His transformation from a worker who just completed tasks to a team member who kept positive and contributed to the company's success was remarkable. John was now a manager, and he was grateful for the opportunity to grow that his boss had given him. He knew that it was not just about the promotion, but about the journey of self-improvement and the realization that every detail counts in the business world.
