Fittingly, also because I was standing in West Gortorn Community Park, which includes a lovely rain garden. A rain garden is a sunken area filled with water-loving plants where rain is channeled and left to soak away slowly, rather than bouncing off the roads and pavements then hitting the grids all at once, swamping (淹没) the already overburdened sewerage system. The rain garden is one of a number of features in the park designed to manage storm water and help prevent flooding in an area that is prone to it. Not that you are immediately aware that these are rainwater management features, which gave it its nickname of the “sponge park”. All you really see is a beautiful green space, an oasis of calm in the city. Manchester City Council commissioned this award-winning park as part of a 10-year plan to regenerate the area. It is also one of the U.K.’s first research and demonstration project for assessing how Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) can help combat climate change, and is being closely monitored by scientists at Manchester University. None of its design concepts are difficult. You take the hard, flat surfaces of the urban environment and do your best to get rid of them. Soften them, roughen them, make them porous (多孔的;透水的). Scoop out sections and fill them with water-loving plants. Then, channeled the rainwater into them and let the vegetation soak it up. Finally, that water is released slowly back into the atmosphere via transpiration (蒸腾作用) in the leaves. Given that the natural world has been doing this for years, it makes sense that these methods are called Nature-Based Solutions. Green Infrastructure is another term; SuDS another, which stands for Sustainable Drainage Systems. Whatever you want to call it, NBS tick a lot of boxes. They take some stress off our antiquated sewerage system; their trees and plants store carbon, helping to mitigate climate change; and they create valuable wildlife habitat. They also provide the green lungs that are so important for our physical and mental well-being. NBS is a wonderful and simple idea. Where there is water, there is life. Slowing the flow not only deals with the problem, it creates nature. If there is water around, you can create fantastic wetland habitats - and we have lost 90-95 percent of our wetlands in this country. Recreating them would be a massive boon for biodiversity. 46. What is the primary function of the rain garden in West Gorton Community Park? A. To provide a place for people to enjoy the popular image of rain. B. To manage storm water and prevent flooding in the park. C. To serve as a demonstration of urban gardening sewerage system. D. To increase the aesthetic appeal of the lovely park. 47. The rain garden in West Gorton Community Park is designed to address a specific problem that is worsened by which of the following factors? A. The popularity of Manchester as a tourist destination, leading to increased traffic and pavement usage. B. The abundance of water-loving plants naturally occurring in the area, requiring additional drainage solutions. C. The city’s existing sewerage system, which is already overburdened and prone to flooding during heavy rainfall. D. The implementation of the 10-year regeneration plan by Manchester City Council, causing disruption to drainage patterns. 48. What does the underlined phrase “tick a lot of boxes” imply? A. NBS is a controversial concept with many different names. B. NBS is a simple idea that is easy to understand and name. C. NBS is a solution that is only effective in certain situations. D. NBS is a versatile solution that can be applied in various contexts. (B) (You may read the questions first) Have you ever heard someone describe themselves an INTJ or an ESTP and wondered what those mysterious-sounding letters could mean? What these people are referring to is their personality type based on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). The Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicator is a self-report inventory designed to identify a person’s personality type, strengths, and preferences. The questionnaire was developed by Isabel Myers and her mother Katherine Briggs based on their work with Carl Jung’s theory of personality types. Today, the MBTI inventory is one of the most widely used psychological instruments in the world. Based on the answers to the questions, people are identified as having one of 16 personality types. No one personality type is “best” or “better” than another. It isn’t a tool designed to look for dysfunction (机能障碍) or abnormality. Instead, its goal is to allow people to further explore and understand their own personalities including their strengths, weaknesses, possible career preferences, and compatibility with other people. The questionnaire itself is made up of four different scales. 1. Are you outwardly or inwardly focused? Extroversion/Introversion Extroverts are energized by people, enjoy a variety of masks, a quick pace, and good at multitasking while introverts often like working alone or in small groups, prefer a more deliberate pace, and like to focus on one task at a time. 2. How do you prefer to take in information? Sensing/Intuition Sensors are realistic people who like to focus on the facts and details, and apply common sense and past experience to figure out practical solutions to problems while intuitives prefer to focus on possibilities and the big picture, easily see patterns and seek creative solutions to problem. 3. How do you prefer to make decision? Thinking/Feeling Thinkers tend to make decisions using logical analysis, objectively weigh pros and cons, and value honesty, consistency, and fairness while feelers tend to be sensitive and cooperative, and decide based on their own personal values and how others will be affected by their actions. 4. How do you prefer to live your outer life? Judging/Perceiving Judgers tend to be organized prepared, like to make and stick to plans, and are comfortable following most rules while perceivers prefer to keep their options open, like to be able to act spontaneously, and like to be flexible with making plans. 49. The purpose of MBTI is to help people ________. A. better understand their unique features B. find a topic to socialize with others C. easily put themselves in a fixed category D. self-diagnose mental health issues 50. According to the passage, we can infer that ________. A. Carl Jung is the co-founder of MBTI test B. MBTI can be used in career planning C. Some personality types are better than others D. introverts may feel boosted at a party 51. Suppose Eric is an ISFP, his ideal occupation might be a(n) ________. A. entrepreneur B. accountant C. programmer D. writer (C) Thanks to Top Gear, a British television show for motoring enthusiasts that is now a global brand, a former WWII airfield called Dunsfold has become one of the best-known testing tracks in the world. On October 15, however, instead of booming to the roar of supercars driven by the show’s racing driver, it witnessed the sight of what appeared to be the cableless trailer of an articled lorry (铰接式卡车) running almost silently around the course at over 80kph. The Pod, as this vehicle is known, was made by Einride, Swedish firm founded in 2016 by Robert Falck, an engineer who used to work for Volvo. Mr. Falck thinks that the technology of vehicle autonomy, long experimental, has now evolved sufficiently for driverless goods vehicles to begin earning their livings properly. Some Pods are already in trials for real jobs: running between warehouses, dragging logs from forests and delivering goods for Lidl, a supermarket group. Pods use the same technology of cameras, radar, lidar (the optical equivalent of radar) and satellite-positioning as other competitors in the field, but they differ from those others in the way their maker tries to deal with the regulatory concerns which prevent fully autonomous vehicles from being let loose on public roads. Einride’s approach, at least at the moment, is to avoid these by avoiding the roads in question. Instead, the Pod’s first version operates on designated routes within the limits of enclosed, private areas such as ports and industrial parks. Here, Pods act like bigger and smarter versions of the delivery robots which already run around some factories—though by having the ability to carry 16 tons and with room on board for 15 industrial pallets’ worth of goods, they are indeed quite a lot bigger. The second difference from most other attempts at vehicle autonomy is Einride’s approach to the word autonomy.” Some makers take the idea literally, and aim to keep humans out of the decision-making process entirely. Others, often prompted by traffic regulations, arrange things so that a normally passive human occupant can take the controls if necessary. Pods represent a third way. They always have a human to keep an eye on what is happening and to take over the driving for a difficult operation or if something goes wrong. But this human operates remotely. Having the driver sitting back at headquarters rather than in the vehicle itself is departure from convention, but not a huge one. Aerial drones are usually controlled in this way. The dramatic step is that Mr. Falck believes you do not need a remote driver for each Pod. Einride already uses one person to control two Pods, but plans eventually for a single driver to look after ten. 52. What purpose does the first paragraph mainly serve? A. To inform readers about a popular racing show. B. To explain the significance of the Dunsfold track. C. To introduce a much-sought-after global brand. D. To offer a glimpse of the main subject of the passage. 53. Pods differ from other autonomous vehicles mainly in that ________. A. they can be used in many different real job settings B. they use advanced satellite-positioning technology C. their maker is not seeking to put them on public roads D. they are actually meant to be smart and big delivery robots 54. What can be inferred from the passage? A. The carrying capacity of Pods has yet to be fully exploited. B. Each Pod needs a remote driver to take over its driving. C. Low-performance self-driving vehicles have a human standby. D. No remote driver will be needed in the future for each Pod. 55. What does the passage mainly talk about? A. A British TV show advertises a newly-developed self-driving vehicle. B A new lorry being tested approaches autonomous driving differently. C. A remote handler plays a crucial role in future autonomous driving. D. A driverless lorry is being tested on a famous track. Section C (6%) Directions: Read the following passage. What Your “Age” Says About You Imagine, for a moment, that you had no birth certificate and your age was simply based on the way you feel inside. How old would you say you are? Like your height or shoe size, the number of years that have passed since you first entered the world is an unchangeable fact. ____56____ Scientists are increasingly interested in this quality. They are finding that our “subjective age” may be essential for understanding the reasons why some people appear to be energetic as they grow old — while others fade. ____57____ It is now well accepted that people tend to mature as they get older, becoming less extroverted ( 外 向 的 ) and less open to new experiences. These personality changes are often considered more obvious in the people with older subjective ages. However, those who feel younger than they really are also become more reliable and less neurotic ( 神 经 质 的 ) as they gain the wisdom that comes with greater life experience. But it doesn’t come at the cost of the energy and vigor of youth. It’s not true that having a lower subjective age leaves us frozen in a state of permanent immaturity. Feeling younger than your years also seems to come with a lower risk of depression and greater mental wellbeing as we age. ____58____ Most people felt about eight years younger than their actual chronological age (实际年龄). But some felt they had aged — and the consequences were serious. Feeling between 8 and 13 years older than your actual age resulted in an 18-25% greater risk of death over the study periods, and greater disease burden — even when you control for other demographic ( 人 口 学 的 ) factors such as education, race or marital status. ____59____ However old you really are, it’s worth questioning whether any of those limitations are coming from the within. A. It also means better physical health. B. One of the most interesting aspects of the research has explored how subjective age interacts with our personality. C. Some studies have explored the potential physical consequences of this difference. D. These findings can give us all a view of the way our own brains and bodies endure the passing of time. E. But everyday experience suggests that people often don’t experience ageing the same way. F. Many researchers are now trying to study how this knowledge might help us live longer. 第II卷 (19分) II.
