Madrid is a popular destination which is considered a city of contrasts with its plentiful historic sites, resting in the shadows of modern skyscrapers.
History
This city of over 3 million people is proud of Western Europe’s largest royal palace, and some consider it to be Madrid’s most beautiful building.
Inside the royal palace 2,800 rooms are decorated in glory with museum quality furniture and artworks. Tourists can tour 50 of these large and splendid rooms.
Shopping
Madrid has some of Europe’s best shopping malls, and potential buyers love to look through the stores looking for bargains. But for 500 years, shoppers have gathered to an extremely large outdoor flea market known as the Rastro which is noted for selling everything from antiques to CDs.
Entertainment
No trip to Madrid is complete without seeing a performance of Spain’s famous art form, flamenco. Every day, flamenco performers sing, dance or play the guitar in small cafes and grand theaters alike.
Food
Madrid has a wide variety of restaurants but because the Spanish typically eat late at about 9 or 10 pm, it’s difficult to find good dinner food earlier. If you get hungry before then, the best solution is to try a tapas bar where light snacks are served. Be sure to try the jamon,a kind of dry-cured ham: Spain is famous for it.

As a boy I was always small for my age. I was also five years younger than one of my brothers and seven years younger than the other. As a result I often felt left out when their friends came over to play. I was either too small or too young for whatever they were doing and they didn’t want me to listen to their conventions, either. More often than not I found myself outside playing alone and feeling forgotten.
I remember one spring afternoon feeling especially lonely as I sat in the yard behind our house. We lived miles from town and I rarely saw my own friends outside of school. I heard my brothers laughing from inside the house and felt tears coming down my cheek. At that moment I saw a large brown dog walking over to me. He looked happy and his tail was wagging as well. Even though he didn’t know me, he greeted me like a long-lost friend, licking my feet and sitting beside me on the spring grass.
It must have been for at least an hour that I petted and talked to this four-legged angel. He let me pour out all my troubles and share my deepest thoughts before he kissed my cheek goodbye. I went back inside feeling happy, knowing that no matter what life may hold, I was loved. Now over 40 years later I still remember that angel with a smile. I believe that God sent him in that moment of sadness to remind me just how much he loved me.
In truth, nothing brings us greater joy than knowing we are loved. Knowing we are loved gives us the strength to love others as well. Knowing we are loved aids us in making Earth more like Heaven. Embrace that love, take joy in it, and then go out and share your own love with the world.
4. When the author’s brother’s friends came to their house, the author ________.
A. couldn’t play with them
B. was permitted to listen to their talk
C. was unwilling to communicate with them
D. was happy to take part in their activities
5. What can we conclude from the second paragraph?
A. The large brown dog frightened the author.
B. The author preferred to be in a quiet place.
C. The dog greeted him like a long-lost friend.
D. The author often invited many friends to his house.
6. When the author returned to his home, ________.
A. he felt much happier than before
B. he led this four-legged angel home
C. he shared his thoughts with his brothers
D. he was unwilling to play with his brothers
7 What does the text mainly want to express?
A. We should take care of dogs.
B. We must know we are loved.
C. We need to give our love to others.
D. We can play with our brothers happily.
C
The key to effective cross-cultural communication is knowledge. First, it is essential that people understand the potential problems of cross-cultural communication, and make a conscious effort to overcome these problems. Second, it is important to assume that one’s efforts will not always be successful, and adjust one’s behaviour appropriately.
For example, one should always assume that there is a great possibility that cultural differences are causing communication problems. One should respond slowly and carefully in cross-cultural exchanges, not jumping to the conclusion that you know what is being thought and said.
William Ury’s suggestion for heated conflicts is to stop, listen and think and he advises going to the balcony when the situation gets tense (紧张的). This helps in cross-cultural communication as well. When things seem to be going badly, stop or slow down and think. What could be going on here? Is it possible that I misinterpreted what they said?
Active listening can sometimes be used to check this out — by repeating what one thinks he or she heard, one can confirm that he or she understands the communication accurately.
Often intermediaries (调解人) can be helpful in cross-cultural communication situations. They can translate both the essential meaning and the manner of what is said. For example, they can tone down strong statements that would be considered appropriate in one culture but not in another, before they are given to people from a culture that does not talk together in such a strong way. They can also adjust the timing of what is said and done. Some cultures move quickly to the point; others talk about other things long enough to establish a relationship with the other person. If discussion on the primary topic begins too soon, the group that needs a “warm-up” first will feel uncomfortable. An intermediary who understands this can explain the problem, and make appropriate adjustments.
8. What is the most important thing in cross-cultural communication?
A. Knowledge of your own culture. B. The ability to take in different opinions.
C. Awareness of the problems that may arise. D. Successful efforts to change your behaviour.
9. Which character helps prevent communication problems?
A. Patience. B. Honesty. C. Generosity. D. Stubbornness.
10. What does the underlined phrase “going to the balcony” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Going outside and enjoying fresh air. B. Dealing with the conflicts in a secret way.
C. Exchanging positions with each other. D. Getting out of the situation temporarily.
11. What is the requirement for an intermediary?
A. To be an experienced translator. B. To behave properly all through a discussion.
C. To be directly involved in a discussion. D. To know both cultures very well.
D
One of the important, but seldom-discussed, problems in healthcare reform is how to take care of our aging population as people continue to live longer. According to a new study from the MacArthur Research Network on an Aging Society, by 2050 Americans may live 3.1 to 7. 9 years longer than the government expects. That would mean women would live 89 to 93 years and men 83 to nearly 86 years. The researchers base their conclusion on "rapid advances in biomedical(生物医药)technology that delay the start and progression of major deadly diseases or that slow the aging process・”
While this is good news, especially for the young, the life expectancy, which is in excess of(超过)the government's estimates, would raise costs sharply for Medicare and Social Security. If the study's predictions are accurate, the total cost for those two programs through 2050 could be between $ 3. 2 trillion and $ & 3 trillion higher than the US Census Bureau(人口普查局)and the Social Security Administration currently expect.
And that's only the beginning. With anticipated scientific breakthroughs in coming decades, people could eventually live to 150 years of age, says Dr. Steven Joyal, an official of the Life Extension Foundation (LEF) a nonprofit organization that promotes research on how we can live longer and healthier. The MacArthur paper, in fact, says that some experts believe the average life expectancy could hit 100 by 2060.
What's more, Joyal says, the conquest(战胜)of disease and the slowing of the aging process will lead to a sharp decline in disability, allowing people of advanced age to function as well as they did when they were much younger. "In other words, a 90-year-old person could have the same mental and physical capacity as somebody 40 or 50 years old."
12. What does the new study show?
A. Americans will live much longer by 2050 than they do now.
B. Great progress has been made in the US in public security.
C. Few people pay attention to the health care reform in the US.
D. Fewer Americans suffer from deadly disease now than before.
13. What probably helps American” live much longer?
A. Social security.
B. Biomedical technology.
C Healthcare reform.
D. New research in health cam.
14. What problem may a longer life expectancy in the US lead to?
A. The aging process will speed up.
B. It adds to the chance of being disabled.
C. The old will have some mental problems.
D. It will increase public costs for the government.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Life for Senior Citizens in the US
B. The Longer Life Expectancy in the Future
C. The Disadvantage of Longer Life Expectancy
D. What Can Be Done to Support So Many Aged People

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,割据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“Surprise!” was the first thing I heard when I opened the door. My family and friends were all smiling at me. There were colorful balloons all over the house, a big poster saying "HAPPY BIRTHDAY'', and of course a cake with 12 candles. It was a wonderful feeling. I knew that I had finally turned twelve and I might possibly get the thing I wanted most.
I saw my mom and dad coming towards me with a small box which seemed to be a birthday present. When I opened the box, I couldn't believe my eyes. I had really gotten a mobile phone! Throwing myself into their arms, I let out a cry of joy, “Thank you! I love you guys!”
“You're welcome. We knew this was going to make you happy but we didn't only get you this because you turned twelve, but also because you are doing well in school. We expect you to keep getting good grades."
“Of course I will." I said confidently.
As soon as I got to school the next morning, I was showing off my phone and asking everyone for their number. It was cool how I got so many contacts on the first day.
It felt like I didn't even exist in that class anymore. I wouldn't pay much attention to the teachers because I was too busy on my phone. However, I didn't get caught using it.
I am pretty sure that the teacher did notice that I stopped paying attention to her because a week later we took a test and I failed. What was worse, my mom had to sign the test.
It was hard to show my mom the test. She was used to seeing A's and B's on my tests. Finally, I showed it to her, and she couldn't believe it. She was angry but most of all, she was disappointed.

1.续写短文的词数应为150左右;

Realizing the reason for my failure, my parents started to dislike the fact that I had a phone. They said they had noticed that I never paid attention to them. It was like I had my own little world. So they thought we didn't communicate as much with my phone. They regretted having given me a phone, which made me ignore the family and study.
Then I started to wonder if I was wrong. A week later I tried going a whole day without a phone and it didn’t go that badly. I had so much fun because I was actually spending time with my family and paying attention to them. From that day, I had a different opinion towards phones.
