As a teacher, it has been my goal to teach my students to become active and responsible members in the community, the nation, and the world. Over the years, my students have made great differences in our community, but saving lives was not really part of our plan. In a January, the students asked why I was upset, so I sadly told them the story. A young man in my neighborhood hit his head while ice skating. Although sent to the hospital at once, he died a few days later. Hearing this, the class began to study head injuries. When my students learned about the dangers, they did careful research before deciding that the best solution was a helmet (头盔) policy that would require all students to wear a helmet if they rode on a bike, skateboard, etc. By showing how important it was, they had the policy passed in the community. They also got a grant (拨款) to buy helmets to be sold at a lower price or given free to students. After Spring Break that year, a mother came to our class to tell the students that they had saved her daughter’s life. With tears in her eyes, she said that her daughter hit a parked car while riding down a hill. Thankfully, she was wearing a helmet given by my students, which, according to the doctor, had prevented serious brain damage or death. Since then and over the years, my students have solved many problems in our community: getting a path along the road to school built, changing the lunch program, and the list goes on and on. Each of these ideas was chosen, researched, and presented by the students. My role was that of a guide. Yes, I truly believe that eleven- and twelve-year-old students can make a difference as they become helpful and valuable members in the community. 4.What should all students do according to the policy? A.Wear a helmet when riding. B.Do research on head injuries. C.Buy helmets at a low price. D.Explain its importance. 5.What happened to the daughter in Paragraph 4? A.She had serious brain damage. B.She got hit by a car. C.She was protected by the helmet. D.She went to thank the class. 6.How does the writer probably feel about his students? A.Sad. B.Confident. C.Anxious. D.Concerned. 7.What can be the best title for the text? A.Solving Problems for a Better World B.Achieving My Goal of Teaching Students C.Protecting Our Heads by Wearing Helmets D.Making a Difference in Our Community India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday developed a series of new high-producing rice species, including herbicide-tolerant(耐除草剂的)rice that can be directly planted into the soil, cutting the huge expenses on water and farm workers. In India, the world's biggest rice exporter, the traditional method of rice growing requires farmers to grow seeds in nurseries, and then wait for 20 to 30 days before transplanting the small plants by hand into the fields that are ankle-deep in water. With the new seed species, developed by the state-run Indian Agricultural Research Institute, farmers only need to water the field once to moisten(使湿润)the soil before planting the rice. Besides, the traditional method also uses a lot of water to control weeds as herbicides are costly and often do not distinguish between the rice and the unwanted weeds. Government scientists said the new rice species contains a gene that would allow farmers to use a common, inexpensive herbicide without worrying about any side effects. “Our focus is very high on new seeds that can be adapted to new conditions, especially in changing climates,” Modi said. Water conservation is likely to be the main attraction of the new rice species in India, where farmers rely heavily on monsoon(季风)rains. “The traditional method uses 3,000 to 5,000 liters(升)of water to produce 1 kg of rice. The new species could cut water use by at least 50% to 60%,” farmers and government officials say. "For farmers like us, the main concern was the management of water, and the new species takes care of that concern," said Ravindra Kajal, who grows rice on his 9-acre farmland in the northern state of Haryana. 8.What is the advantage of the new rice species? A.It can remove all the weeds. B.It can be planted in any field. C.It needs less water to grow. D.It needs less soil to grow. 9.Why can farmers use a common herbicide to the new rice species? A.Because the new crop species contains herbicide itself. B.Because the new crop species resists a common herbicide. C.Because the common herbicide is relatively cheaper. D.Because the common herbicide can moisten the soil. 10.What makes India consider planting the new rice species? A.Its climate. B.Its plentiful funds. C.Its tradition. D.Its lack of herbicide. 11.What is the main idea of the text? A.India has completely changed its rice species. B.The farmers prefer planting new rice species. C.India is trying to promote its new rice species. D.The new rice species produces the most rice in India. Fingerprints have provided key evidence in countless cases of serious crime. But there are still some situations in which it can be difficult or impossible to recover fingerprints, and this can cause a headache for investigators. In seeking a solution to this problem, researchers have started to realize that a fingerprint can be used for a lot more than just its unique ridge (纹理) pattern. A fingerprint is formed when a finger makes contact with a surface. The finger leaves behind traces of sweat and any other substances present on the finger that a suspect might have touched. These substances are deposited (存储) in the characteristic pattern of the ridges present on the fingertip of a person. Most fingerprints are invisible and require a chemical development process in order to show them. And newer processes can obtain much more information about the fingerprint owner—what they’ve touched, what they’ve eaten and even what drugs they’ve taken. A fingerprint left at a crime scene will contain not only sweat from a suspect, but also traces of any substances a suspect has touched. This can be very useful evidence if the fingerprints contain a victim’s blood. But even then, a fingerprint gives no investigative clue if the suspect is not on the fingerprint database. Researchers recently showed that the substances that cover a mobile phone can vary according to who the device belongs to because of the food, medicines and other things to which we are exposed. So the substances in fingerprints should vary in a similar way, and some early attempts have been made to prove this. If we think more broadly, fingerprints can provide some very exciting possibilities for the future of medical testing. For example, a fingerprint is a very convenient way to give a sample in a drug test. In our current research, our group has also found that medicines can be found in fingerprints, and that these traces disappear when a patient stops taking their medicines. So one day we could see fingerprints used as an easy way of helping a patient to check whether a drug is being absorbed properly. 12.What can we infer from paragraph 1? A.Fingerprints are hard to find in most cases. B.It is impossible to recover broken fingerprints. C.Fingerprints are more useful than people thought. D.Fingerprints are not that useful in many cases of serious crime. 13.Researchers can get all the following information from a fingerprint EXCEPT ________. A.the food a suspect has eaten B.the drugs a suspect has taken C.the substances a suspect has touched D.the people a suspect has encountered 14.What will fingerprints be used to do in the future? A.To find out if a patient is recovering properly. B.To know if the patients’ drugs are being taken in indeed. C.To check whether a driver is drunk in a quicker and more accurate way. D.To help people find their lost mobile phones or other electronic devices. 15.Which of the following is the best title for this passage? A.The Key Uses of Fingerprints B.The Hidden Data in Your Fingerprints C.The Development of Fingerprint Technology D.The Importance of Building a Fingerprint Database 二、七选五(本大题共5小题,共10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Do’s and Don’ts of Donating Giving up your unused or unwanted stuff is a great way to make space in your home for the items that you do enjoy on a regular basis. Not sure where to start? Here are some do’s and don’ts of donating your belongings. Do Prepare Your Clothes You’ve thoroughly cleaned out your closet and drawers, and have a mountain of clothing waiting to be donated. 16 Make sure all buttons are accounted for, and that you can’t see any dirty marks, or damage. 17 The number one rule of donating your stuff is to make sure that it’s in good, usable condition. Don’t pass along old clothes or furniture, chipped dishes, books that are missing pages, or toys with lost pieces. Nobody wants to accept your damaged belongings. Find a local company that will recycle these items instead. Don’t even think of donating these items With a little common sense it’s easy to figure out items that are ideal for donations. 18 As a gentle reminder, it’s never a good idea to donate car parts, dangerous waste, construction materials and weapons. Don’t donate large appliances Major appliances such as stoves, fridges, freezers, washers and dryers typically reside on the ‘do not donate’ list due to health and safety reasons. All items accepted for donation must be thoroughly clean and in good working order. With secondhand appliances, it can be difficult to guarantee that they fit the bill. 19 Don’t donate recalled items Every so often a product recall hits the news headlines. Highchairs, toys, holiday lights for Christmas trees—the list of recalled items due to safety concerns is endless. 20 A dangerous product should be thrown away, and not passed on to an unsuspecting person. Think of the well-being of others before dropping off something that’s viewed as a hidden danger in your own home. A.They’re all acceptable items for donation, too. B.Instead of donating an unwanted large appliance, call your local trash collection company and arrange for their safe disposal. C.But unfortunately some people will throw away the contents of their home without a second thought. D.Before you bag up these pieces, inspect each one to ensure that they’re in good condition and ready to be owned by someone else. E.Don’t donate damaged items. F.Clothes aren’t the only household items that can be donated. G.Never donate recalled items! 三、完形填空(本大题共15小题,共30分) It was a Saturday a few summers ago. My daughter and I went swimming in our pool.
