Plastic straws (吸管) are a modern invention, although people have been using different types of things for drinking water for centuries. By the 1960s, plastic straws have become common. It is said that 500 million straws are used just in the United States each day.
So what’s the problem? The problem is that plastics, including plastic straws that are usually thrown away after one use, end up in the world’s oceans. As many as 8.3 billion plastic straws pollute the world’s beaches and oceans.
There are many choices for people who need or want a straw. Paper straws are becoming popular.
Straws made from a new kind of plastic, which is biodegradable (可生物降解的) and made from plants, are also a good choice. Companies are also marketing reusable straws made of glass or metal. People can carry these straws with them to use when they go to a restaurant. However, paper straws are about 6 cents each, and reusable glass straws are about 50 to 60 cents each, while a regular plastic straw only costs about a cent. That adds up for restaurants and food sellers that offer straws.
Because the use of plastic straws is getting a lot of attention these days, many businesses have decided not to use them. Starbucks has said that it will stop using plastic straws. McDonald’s announced that it will start banning (禁止) straws at its restaurants in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Hotel chains such as Hilton, Marriott, and Hyatt plan to stop using them. Even the whole cities, like Seattle, are banning the use of plastic straws. California now has a law in place that customers will only be given a straw if they ask for one.
The next time you’re buying something to drink, think about your straw choices. Reuse, reduce, and recycle.

26. Which straw costs the least according to Paragraph 3?
A. The paper straw. B. The plastic straw.
C. The glass straw. D. The metal straw.
27. What’s the purpose of the text?
A. To share a new way of drinking water.

根据文章第二段“The problem is that plastics, including plastic straws that are usually thrown away after one use, end up in the world’s oceans.(问题是,塑料,包括通常一次使用后就被丢弃的塑料吸管,最终进入了世界的海洋)”说明塑料吸管会造成海洋污染,结合最后一段“The next time you’re buying something to drink, think about your straw choices. Reuse, reduce, and recycle.(下次你买东西喝的时候,想想你选择的吸管。重复使用、减少使用和循环利用。)”可知,我们应该少用塑料吸管,由此可知,作者写本文是为了表明少用塑料吸管的重要性。故选D。
C
In my early teens, I was once given a film camera as a gift . On receiving it, I jumped on my bike, headed to Wimbledon Common and took photos, just for me: photos of trees and wildlife. I was out all day. On my way home I spotted a tree lit up by street lighting and tried to capture its beauty. Rushing home, I put the spent film in a special little envelope and sent it off to a photography store, desperate to see how it would come out. I took many photos then and loved the fact that when you processed your film you got back colour photos which froze the precious moments, gently encouraging the hobby and the payments for processing.
As I grew into adulthood, that simple, deep happiness gradually faded away. One weekend when I was busy answering the work calls, my eyes caught a box in the corner of the room. I suddenly felt a sense of sadness. The stress growing over these years had pushed the camera from beside my pillow to the box in the corner. I thought I needed a change.
I took out the camera and dusted it down. It was a great joy that it still worked. I bought new film and took the camera everywhere I went. Now it is always on hand to accompany me on journeys, to allow me time to myself. Even if the day is full and busy, I can seize some moments for myself to take photos, to observe the world around me.
The wall of my room now holds all my camera equipment on display, along with photos I've taken. To me, the room represents how I’ve found happiness: by reconnecting to the younger part of myself I laid aside, by allowing room in my life for pleasure to exist, and by creating an environment that allows opportunities for delight.
28. What did the author think of taking photos as a young boy?
A. Inspiring and practical. B. Tiring yet delightful.
C. Exciting and worthwhile. D. Difficult yet engaging.
29. Why did the author stop taking photos according to paragraph 2?
A. He wanted to focus on his work. B. He was struck by sudden sorrow.
C. He attempted to behave like an adult. D. He was faced with increasing pressure.
30. What did the author get from picking up his hobby?
A. More fun in the daily routine. B. New journeys in the wild.
C. Better skills of observation. D. Different styles of photography.
31 What is the best title for the text?
A. Revisiting Lost Childhood Memories B. Appreciating Beauty Behind the Lens
C. Escaping Teenage Sadness with Camera D. Regaining Pleasure Through Photography
C 29. D 30. A 31. D
根据文章第一段中“I took many photos then and loved the fact that when you processed your film you got back colour photos which froze the precious moments, gently encouraging the hobby and the payments for processing. (那时我拍了很多照片,当你冲洗你的胶卷时,你会得到彩色照片,这一事实让我很高兴,它冻结了那些珍贵的时刻,温柔地鼓励了我的爱好和为冲洗而支付的费用。)”可推断,对于作者小时候拍照这件事,作者觉得这是令人兴奋且值得的。故选C。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中的“The stress growing over these years had pushed the camera from beside my pillow to the box in the corner. (这些年来不断增长的压力把相机从我的枕头旁推到了角落里的盒子里。)”可知,作者面临的压力越来越大,这使得作者停止了拍照。故选D。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第三段中的“Even if the day is full and busy, I can seize some moments for myself to take photos, to observe the world around me. (即使一天很满很忙,我也能抓住一些时间给自己拍照,观察周围的世界。)”和第四段中的“To me, the room represents how I’ve found happiness: by reconnecting to the younger part of myself I laid aside, by allowing room in my life for pleasure to exist, and by creating an environment that allows opportunities for delight. (对我来说,这个房间代表了我是如何找到幸福的:通过重新连接我搁置的年轻的自己,通过在我的生活中为快乐留出空间,通过创造一个允许快乐机会的环境。)”可知,作者通过重新开始拍照,在繁忙的日程中获得了乐趣。故选A。
通读全文,尤其是最后一段中的“To me, the room represents how I’ve found happiness: by reconnecting to the younger part of myself I laid aside, by allowing room in my life for pleasure to exist, and by creating an environment that allows opportunities for delight.
D
If you recently had trouble figuring out if an image of a person is real or generated through artificial intelligence (AI), you’re not alone. A new study from University of Waterloo researchers found that people had more difficulty than was expected distinguishing who is a real person and who is artificially generated.
The Waterloo study saw 260 participants provided with 20 unlabeled pictures: 10 of which were of real people obtained from Google searches, and the other 10 generated by Stable Diffusion or DALL-E, two commonly used AI programs that generate images.
Participants were asked to label each image as real or AI-generated and explain why they made their decision. Only 61% of participants could tell the difference between AI-generated people and real ones, far below the 85% threshold (门槛) that researchers expected. “People are not as adept at making the distinction as they think they are,” said Andreea Pocol, a PhD candidate in Computer Science at the University of Waterloo.
Participants paid attention to details such as fingers, teeth, and eyes as possible indicators when looking for AI-generated content - but their assessments weren’t always correct. Pocol noted that the nature of the study allowed participants to compare photos in detail, while most Internet users look at images in passing. “People who are just doomscrolling (滚动) or don’t have time won’t pick up on these clues,” Pocol said.
Pocol added that the extremely rapid rate at which AI technology is developing makes it particularly difficult to understand the potential for malicious or illegal action posed by AI-generated images. The pace of academic research and legislation (立法) isn’t often able to keep up: AI-generated images have become even more realistic since the study began in late 2022.
“Disinformation isn’t new, but the tools of disinformation have been constantly shifting and progressing,” Pocol said. “It may get to a point where people, no matter how trained they are, will still struggle to differentiate real images from fakes. That’s why we need to develop tools to identify and counter this.”
32. What does the underlined word “adept” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Expert. B. Quick. C. Alarmed. D. Puzzled.
33. What decreased the accuracy of the result of the experiment?
A. Ignoring facial expressions. B. Drawing a conclusion in a hurry.
C. Lacking professional guidance. D. Failing to distinguish the details.
34. What’s Pocol’s advice on dealing with disinformation?
A Providing people with related training. B. Banning the spread of fake information.
C. Doing some field research in person. D. Developing practical tools to identify it.
35. What is the text mainly about?
A. Methods of distinguishing disinformation. B. Threats caused by AI-generated images.
C. Difficulties in telling AI-generated images. D. Differences between artificial and real images.
A 33. B 34. D 35. C
根据第三段“Only 61% of participants could tell the difference between AI-generated people and real ones, far below the 85% threshold (门槛) that researchers expected.(只有61%的参与者能够分辨出人工智能生成的人和真实人物之间的区别,远低于研究人员预期的85%的门槛)”可知,人们并不像自己认为的那样善于区分。 故选A项。
根据第四段“Participants paid attention to details such as fingers, teeth, and eyes as possible indicators when looking for AI-generated content - but their assessments weren’t always correct. Pocol noted that the nature of the study allowed participants to compare photos in detail, while most Internet users look at images in passing.(在寻找人工智能生成的内容时,参与者会注意手指、牙齿和眼睛等细节,作为可能的指标,但他们的评估并不总是正确的。Pocol指出,这项研究的本质是允许参与者详细地比较照片,而大多数互联网用户都是匆匆看照片)”可知,匆忙下结论降低了实验结果的准确性。故选B项。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“That’s why we need to develop tools to identify and counter this.(这就是为什么我们需要开发工具来识别和应对这种情况)”可知,Pocol对处理虚假信息的建议是开发实用的工具来识别它。
根据第一段“If you recently had trouble figuring out if an image of a person is real or generated through artificial intelligence (AI), you’re not alone. A new study from University of Waterloo researchers found that people had more difficulty than was expected distinguishing who is a real person and who is artificially generated.(如果你最近很难弄清楚一个人的图像是真实的还是通过人工智能生成的,那么你并不孤单。

故选A项。

“Mom will be so proud of what I did.” Ethan thought as he walked past the cheering crowd towards the stage. The entire room was already applauding him, and his heart was pounding in excitement. He would receive an award in front of so many people for the first time, so Ethan was thrilled and nervous.
“Congratulations, Ethan. You are amazing,” his science teacher, Mrs. Johnson, praised him, extending him the prize.
A wide smile flickered (闪现) across Ethan’s face. He had secured first place in the school Science Olympiad. He was just 11, and for someone of his age, this achievement was huge.
Ethan was so happy and he couldn’t wait to show his mom that he had obtained first place. However, his smile faded when he couldn’t spot his mother, Mafia, anywhere ...
“All yours, child,” Mrs. Johnson smiled, pointing at the prize.
“Thank you, Mrs. Johnson,” Ethan managed a smile as he accepted it.
The entire room burst into applause once again, but Ethan was not concerned about it. His eyes scanned the crowd for his mother. “Where are you, Mom? You had promised me that you would come!”
Holding the prize in his hands, Ethan eventually got off the stage, thinking she was late. He saw the other winners return to their parents, but he sat alone, waiting for his mother to show up. To Ethan’s discouragement, the event got over, and she never came.
The prize ceremony was over and the staff were leaving. Ethan’s look was still fixed on the door. He was hoping that his mom would just burst into the auditorium (礼堂) at any moment and tell him she was extremely sorry for not making it, but that never happened. He realized that she was probably not going to show up.
Ethan was really mad at his mother. “How could she miss this? I had told her again and again and she had promised to be here!” he said to himself.
With his head dropping down, Ethan grabbed his backpack and stepped out of the auditorium.
Paragraph 1:
As Ethan was walking out of the hall, Mrs. Johnson came to him hurriedly with a smartphone in her hand.

Paragraph 2:
Half an hour later, Mrs. Johnson and Ethan arrived at the hospital parking lot.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
As Ethan was walking out of the hall, Mrs. Johnson came to him hurriedly with a smartphone in her hand. “Ethan, your mom called me to apologize for not being able to attend the ceremony. She explained that she had an unavoidable situation and couldn’t make it. But she’s truly proud of you and wants you to know that,” Mrs. Johnson said gently. Ethan felt a mix of emotions - relief, confusion, and concern. He wondered what could have been so important that his mom had to miss such a significant moment in his life.
Half an hour later, Mrs. Johnson and Ethan arrived at the hospital parking lot. They walked inside together. As they approached his mom’s room, he saw her lying in a hospital bed, looking weak but relieved to see him. She explained that she had been in a car accident earlier that day and despite her injuries, she had tried her best to reach the ceremony but unfortunately couldn’t make it. Ethan’s anger melted away as he realized how much his mom must have wanted to be there for him. He hugged her tightly, grateful that she was okay and proud of his accomplishment.

As I grew into adulthood that simple, deep happiness gradually faded away.

A. Providing people with related training.
