Experience of training retired racing dogs led my husband, Steve and me to believe we could handle anything. But we were wrong. When we adopted Ray, a dog with a hurt that made him stop racing, things got tough. He retired due to the injury and quickly went to the adoption agency.
Ray had no other place to go. Behind his sweet face hid a dark and damaged soul and an aggressive (好斗的) nature. Desperate to find him a home and not deliver him to the farm, the adoption agency rushed him to our door when we offered to adopt. Our experience with dogs and a home without other animals made us perfect candidates, and we were his best shot.
Ray jumped around our house. He tried to understand the enormous world he now lived in, a strange one compared to the quarters he had known for so long. Adjustment would take time, but his inexperience, and apparently ours as well, made coexistence interesting.
Patience and training with any new pet are important, but with Ray, they were vital. He didn’t listen to us, no matter how nice we were. He didn’t understand he was a pet with a name. He did not respond to commands, love, encouragement, or food. He had no idea what we expected of him. Like a creature from another planet, he had no concept of life in our world.
Ray got really scared and would get angry when we left. In a madness he scratched (抓, 挠) at windows and doors whenever we left the house. Concerned for his safety and the condition of our home, we locked him in a big wooden box. But he resisted and tried to escape. The stress we encountered flooded us.

1. Love and patience can truly work wonders, even in the toughest of situations.(爱和耐心即使在最艰难的情况下也能创造奇迹。)
2. Every challenge is an opportunity for growth, both for us and the ones we care about.(每一个挑战都是成长的机会,对我们和我们所关心的人来说都是如此。)
3. Understanding and perseverance are the keys to unlocking the hearts of even the most damaged souls.(理解和坚持是打开即使是最受伤灵魂心灵的钥匙。)
4. In the journey of building a relationship, setbacks are just stepping stones to a stronger bond.(在建立关系的旅程中,挫折只是通向更牢固纽带的垫脚石。)
5. The power of hope can transform a seemingly hopeless situation into a beautiful beginning.(希望的力量可以将一个看似无望的情况转变为一个美好的开始。)
Eight weeks after adopting Ray, we were ready to give up and send him back. The exhaustion and disappointment were written all over our faces. We stared at Ray, who seemed equally lost and confused in his own way. The house that was once filled with hope now felt heavy with despair. We questioned our decision, wondering if we had been too naive to think we could handle a dog with such deep-seated issues. As we sat in the living room, the silence was only broken by Ray's occasional whines from the wooden box, a reminder of the constant struggle we had been facing. It seemed like all our efforts had been in vain, and the future with Ray looked bleak.
But the next morning, Ray suddenly seemed to understand us. He walked up to us slowly, his tail wagging gently for the first time. His eyes met ours with a newfound softness. When we called his name, he actually came closer, as if he finally recognized himself as Ray, a part of our family. We were stunned but filled with a glimmer of hope. We realized that maybe, just maybe, he had been trying to understand us all along. We decided to give him one more chance, starting with a new approach to training and interaction. We would be more patient, more observant, and try to see the world from his perspective. With this newfound determination, we hoped to build a real connection with Ray and help him find his place in our home and in our hearts.
(二)
Eight weeks after adopting Ray, we were ready to give up and send him back. The stress had taken a toll on our relationship too. We would argue about the best way to handle Ray, and the atmosphere in the house was tense. The scratches on the doors and windows were like a constant reminder of Ray's unhappiness and our failure. We felt like we had failed not only Ray but also ourselves. As we packed his things, a sense of sadness and resignation filled the air. We couldn't help but wonder if we had made a wrong choice in adopting him, and if he would be better off somewhere else.
But the next morning, Ray suddenly seemed to understand us. He brought us his favorite toy, a tattered chew toy he had been ignoring all this time. He dropped it at our feet and looked up at us with pleading eyes. It was as if he was trying to say sorry or maybe asking for another chance. We were touched by this unexpected gesture. It was a small step, but it was a start. We decided to put aside our plans to send him back and instead focus on building a better relationship with him. We would take it one day at a time, learning his cues and signals, and showing him that he was loved and safe with us. Through this experience, we realized that sometimes, it's in the darkest moments that the faintest glimmer of hope appears, and we should never give up too easily on those we have promised to care for.
Eight weeks after adopting Ray, we were ready to give up and send him back. Ray had consumed our attention all along, showing no improvement. We realized we had only one choice: Returning Ray to the adoption agency. I knelt down beside Ray at night, hugging him tight. Tears flowed down my face as I whispered into his ear. “Please, Ray, please try harder. You must be good tomorrow, or we’ll have to send you back. We want you to stay, but you have to want it, too!” He didn’t respond.
But the next morning, Ray suddenly seemed to understand us. Calm and mindful, he came when called and responded to commands. He still had a long way to go, but now exhibited a willingness to learn and behave. Steve and I breathed easier each day because he improved better and better. Within a month, Ray no longer tore at doors and windows when we left the house. He was willing to stay at home alone, and we knew no harm would fall upon him or our possessions.
