Nabilah Abdullah has been enthusiastically sculpting with clay for nearly 20 years, from one of a dozen workshops in the Sarawak Pottery Centre, just to the north of Kuching, Malaysia. Nabilah spends each morning making new works and each afternoon selling them from her shop, Ally Clay Crafts, in Kuching’s Steamship Building.
Works in progress fill every shelf of Nabilah’s workshop. There are containers and pots waiting to be fired, and bowls about to be polished. There are a row of elegant leaf-shaped brooches (胸针), deep green and highly polished. “They’re made by pressing real leaves into the clay and making a unique imprint,” says Nabilah. “I take inspiration from nature- the rainforest is my supermarket.”
But Nabilah’s consuming passion is a black pot. Evidence of pots like this has been uncovered in the Niah Caves, an archaeological hot spot in the north of the country where a skull was found that dates back around 60,000 years. Nabilah was inspired to create her own pot, following a visit to the Borneo Cultures Museum. The black pot was used to cook rice- the rounded bottom allowed the fire to heat it evenly. Nabilah travelled three hours into the rainforest to learn how to make these pots from an old man in his house. He showed Nabilah how it was done, pushing a smooth round stone down into a column of clay, then beating its outside with a wooden paddle until it took on the round shape of the stone. He was doing this just as his ancestors did thousands of years ago, following the same process and using the same tools. The only difference is that the pot will be finished in a kiln (窑) rather than an open fire, because the smoke pollution from the open fire is far too great.
“Tradition is so important; it marks where we are from,” Nabilah adds. “Our ancestors were very clever and we mustn’t lose that wisdom. If I don’t do this and show others how to do it, the art will be lost forever. It’s my mission to preserve these skills for future generations.”
24.Why does the author mention Nabilah’s daily routine in paragraph 1?
A.To advertise her works. B.To present her passion for work.
C.To introduce her work environment. D.To highlight the features of her works.
25.What do we know about the brooches made by Nabilah?
A.They wait to be polished. B.They feature shelf patterns.
C.They sell well in supermarkets. D.They are based on physical objects.
26.What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about Nabilah?
A.Her show of black pots in a museum. B.Her discovery of ancient pots in caves.
C.Her journey to learn traditional pot making. D.Her solution to using a kiln for making pots.
27.What word can best describe Nabilah?
A.Responsible. B.Reserved. C.Humble. D.Humorous.

Recently, campaigners have encouraged us to buy local food. This reduces “food miles”, that is, the distance food travels to get from the producer to the retailer. They reason that the higher the food miles, the more carbon emissions. Buying local food, therefore, has a lower carbon footprint and is more environmentally friendly.
However, the real story is not as simple as that. If our aim is to reduce carbon emissions, we must look at the whole farming process, not just transportation. Other processes, including fertilization, storage, heating and irrigation, contribute much more.
In fact, imported food often has a lower carbon footprint than locally grown food. Take apples for example. In autumn, when apples are harvested, the best option for a British resident is to buy British apples. However, the apples we buy in winter or spring have been kept refrigerated for months, and this uses up a lot of energy. In spring, therefore, it is more energy- efficient to import them from New Zealand, where they are in season. Heating also uses a lot of energy, which is why growing tomatoes in heated greenhouses in the UK is less environmentally friendly than importing them from Spain, where the crop grows well in the local climate.
We must also take into account the type of transport. Transporting food by air creates about 50 times more emissions than shipping it. However, only a small proportion of goods are flown to the consumer country, and these are usually high value, perishable items which we cannot produce locally. Even then, these foods may not have a higher carbon footprint than locally grown food. For example, beans flown in from Kenya are grown in sunny fields using manual labour and natural fertilizers, unlike in Britain, where we use oil-based fertilizers and diesel machinery. Therefore, the total carbon footprint is still lower.
It’s also worth remembering that a product’s journey does not end at the supermarket. The distance consumers travel to buy their food, and the kind of transport they use will also add to its carbon footprint. So driving a long way to shop for food will negate any environmental benefits of buying locally grown produce.
Recently, some supermarkets have been trying to raise awareness of food miles too. But ultimately, the measures are too simple. Lots of different factors contribute to a food’s carbon footprint besides the distance it has travelled.
28.Why is importing apples from New Zealand more energy-efficient for British residents in spring?
A.It reduces food miles.
B.British apples are in short supply.
C.New Zealand apples are cheaper.
D.British apples have been stored under energy-consuming conditions.
29.Which of the following statements is correct according to the passage?
A.All imported food has a higher carbon footprint than locally grow n food.
B.Beans flown in from Kenya have higher carbon footprints than grown in Britain.
C.Transporting food by air always results in a higher carbon footprint than growing local food.
D.Only considering food miles is an oversimplified way to assess a food’s environmental impact.
30.The underlined word “negate” in paragraph 5 probably means ________.
A.enhance B.ignore C.cancel out D.misunderstand
31.What is the author’s attitude towards buying local food?
A.Strongly supportive. B.Completely opposed.
C.Cautiously skeptical. D.Somewhat indifferent.
D
A gadget which makes water out of air could become the greatest household invention since the microwave.
Using the same technology as a dehumidifier (除湿器), the Water Mill is able to create a ready supply of drinking water because it can always get it from an unlimited source — the air.
The company behind the machine says not only does it offer an alternative to bottled water in developed countries, but it is a solution for the millions who face a daily water shortage.
The machine works by drawing in wet air through a filter and over a cooling instrument which changes it into water droplets. It can produce up to 12 liters a day. The Water Mill will also produce more water when storms pass over, as the amount of water which is contained in the air increases. In keeping with its eco- development, the machine uses the same amount of electricity as three lights.
Inventor Jonathan Ritchey said: “The demand for water is off the chart. So people are looking for freedom from water distribution systems that are shaky and unreliable.” The machine, which is about 3 feet wide, is likely to cost £800 when it goes on sale here in the spring. Its maker, Canadian Firm Element Four, roughly calculates that a liter of water costs around 20p to produce.
Environmentalists state that half the world’s population will face water shortage because of climate change by 2080. One in five is said to lack access to safe drinking.
The Water Mill is not effective in areas where the amount of water contained in the air is below about 30 percent, but in Britain that won't be much of a problem.
32.Who would be most likely in need of The Water Mill?
A.A household with high electricity bill.
B.Residents in an area with frequent storms.
C.A person who has access to water for free.
D.Someone who lacks enough drinking water.
33.What do we learn about the machine?
A.It absorbs steam and turns it into water.
B.It is very expensive for families to afford.
C.It works in the same way as microwaves.
D.It helps to make the water clean to drink.
34.What is the best title for the passage?
A.A New Way to Solve Water Problem
B.A Dehumidifier to Produce Water
C.A Machine to Make Water out of Air
D.An Absolutely New Invention

Having a little nervousness before a big test is normal, but for some students, this nervousness can turn into anxiety. Test anxiety is a common issue that affects many students, but there are ways to manage and overcome this challenge. Below are some tips to help you deal with test anxiety and stay calm during your exams.
Prepare thoroughly. Preparation may reduce some test anxiety. 35 Focus on understanding the material thoroughly rather than just memorizing facts. In addition, organize your notes and use study strategies that match your learning style to make the most of your study time.
Manage your time. Effective time management may significantly reduce your stress level. 36 Use to- do lists to keep track of your tasks and reward yourself for completing them. Avoid procrastination and tackle study sessions in manageable chunks.
Reflect on past successes. 37 Think about what strategies worked well for you in the past and apply them to your current test preparation. Knowing that you have done well before might reduce performance anxiety.
38 During the test, avoid distractions and focus on one question at a time. Read each question thoroughly and take your time to understand it before answering. If you start feeling anxious, use a relaxation technique like deep breathing to stay calm and focus.
Maintain a realistic viewpoint. While aiming for performance can be helpful, do not attach your self- worth to test outcomes. After a test, review what you did well and identify areas for improvement without being too hard on yourself. 39
A.Stay focused during the test.
B.Answer the questions you know first.
C.Create a flexible study schedule that includes breaks and personal time.
D.Following these strategies can reduce test anxiety and improve performance.
E.Develop positive study habits and start studying well in advance of the test date.
F.This approach may help you develop long- term strategies for success and reduce test anxiety.
G.Your past achievements may boost your confidence and remind you that you can succeed again.
There is certainly evidence that actors experience a blending of their real self with their assumed characters. For instance, Benedict Cumberbatch said, “My mum says I’m much more impatient with her when I’m filming Sherlock.”
A recent finding doesn’t involve acting, and it indicates that merely spending some time thinking about another person seemed to rub off on the volunteers’ sense of self led by Meghan Meyer at Princeton University. Across several studies, these researchers asked volunteers to first rate their own personalities, memories or physical attributes, and then to perform the same task from the perspective of another person. For instance, they might score the emotionality of various personal memories, and then rate how a friend or relative would have experienced those same events.
After taking the perspective of another, the volunteers scored themselves once again: the consistent finding was that their self - knowledge was now changed—their self-scores had shifted to become more similar to those they’d given for someone else. For instance, if they had initially said the trait term “confident” was only moderately related to themselves and then rated the term as being strongly related to a friend’s personality, when they came to rescore themselves, they now tended to see themselves as more confident.
“By simply thinking about another person, we may adapt our self to take the shape of that person” said Meyer and her colleagues. By roleplaying or acting out the kind of person we would like to become, or merely by thinking about and spending time with people who embody the kind of attributes we would like to see in ourselves, we can find that our sense of self changes in desirable ways.
“As each of us chooses who to befriend, who to model, and who to ignore” write Meyer and her colleagues, “we must make these decisions aware of how they shape not only the fabric of our social networks, but even our sense of who we are.”
40.Why did Benedict become much more impatient when filming Sherlock?
41.What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 mean?
42.Please decide which part of the following statement is false, then underline it and explain why.
After taking the perspective of another, the self-knowledge of volunteers was changed—their self-scores reached a higher level than before.
43.How would you make use of the finding? (about 40 words)

B.Reserved. C.Humble. D.Humorous.
【答案】24.B 25.D 26.C 27.A
根据文章第一段“Nabilah Abdullah has been enthusiastically sculpting with clay for nearly 20 years, from one of a dozen workshops in the Sarawak Pottery Centre, just to the north of Kuching, Malaysia. Nabilah spends each morning making new works and each afternoon selling them from her shop, Ally Clay Crafts, in Kuching’s Steamship Building.(纳比拉·阿卜杜拉已经热情地用陶土雕塑了近20年,地点是在马来西亚古晋市北部沙巴州陶艺中心的一个车间里(该中心有十几个车间)。纳比拉每天早上都会创作新的作品,而每天下午则会在她位于古晋市汽船大厦的店铺“艾利陶土工艺品店”里出售这些作品。)”可推知,在第一段中提到Nabilah的日常习惯是为了展示她对工作的热情。故选B。
25.细节理解题。根据文章第二段““They’re made by pressing real leaves into the clay and making a unique imprint,” says Nabilah. “I take inspiration from nature- the rainforest is my supermarket.”(纳比拉说:“它们是通过将真实的叶子压入陶土中,制作出独特的印记而成的。我从大自然中获取灵感——雨林就是我的超市。”)”可知,Nabilah制作的胸针是以实物为基础的。故选D。
26.主旨大意题。根据文章第三段“But Nabilah’s consuming passion is a black pot. Evidence of pots like this has been uncovered in the Niah Caves, an archaeological hot spot in the north of the country where a skull was found that dates back around 60,000 years…. The only difference is that the pot will be finished in a kiln (窑) rather than an open fire, because the smoke pollution from the open fire is far too great.( 但纳比拉最热衷的是制作一个黑陶罐。
根据文章最后一段““Tradition is so important; it marks where we are from,” Nabilah adds. “Our ancestors were very clever and we mustn’t lose that wisdom. If I don’t do this and show others how to do it, the art will be lost forever. It’s my mission to preserve these skills for future generations.”(“传统非常重要;它标志着我们来自哪里,”纳比拉补充道。“我们的祖先非常聪明,我们不能失去他们的智慧。如果我不做这件事,不向其他人展示如何去做,那么这门艺术就会永远消失。将这门技艺传承给后代是我的使命。”)”可知,最后一段提到Nabilah认为传统很重要,她的祖先很聪明,她不能让这种智慧丢失,她有责任将这些技能保留下来传给后代。因此,最能描述Nabilah的词是“有责任心的”(Responsible)。故选A。
C
根据文章第三段中的“However, the apples we buy in winter or spring have been kept refrigerated for months, and this uses up a lot of energy. In spring, therefore, it is more energy-efficient to import them from New Zealand, where they are in season. (然而,我们在冬季或春季购买的苹果已经冷藏了数月,这会消耗大量能源。因此,在春季,从新西兰进口苹果更节能,因为那里的苹果正当季。)”可知,这两句话明确指出英国在春季时,苹果已被冷藏数月,处于耗能状态,所以从新西兰进口苹果更节能。故选D。
29.推理判断题。根据文章第二段中的“If our aim is to reduce carbon emissions, we must look at the whole farming process, not just transportation. (如果我们的目标是减少碳排放,我们必须考虑整个农业生产过程,而不仅仅是运输。)”以及最后一段中的“Lots of different factors contribute to a food’s carbon footprint besides the distance it has travelled. (除了食物运输的距离之外,还有许多不同的因素会影响食物的碳足迹。)”可知,只考虑食物里程来评估食物对环境的影响过于简单,与D选项相符。故选D。
30.词句猜测题。根据文章第五段“It’s also worth remembering that a product’s journey does not end at the supermarket. The distance consumers travel to buy their food, and the kind of transport they use will also add to its carbon footprint. (同样值得记住的是,产品的旅程并不在超市结束。消费者购买食物所走的距离以及他们使用的交通方式也会增加食物的碳足迹。)”以及“So driving a long way to shop for food (开车很远去购买食物)”可知,所以,会使得购买本地种植产品的任何环境效益都无效。“negate”表示使无效,与“cancel out (抵消)”意思相近。故选C。
31.推理判断题。根据第二段中的“However, the real story is not as simple as that. (然而,实际情况并非如此简单。)”以及文章第五段“It’s also worth remembering that a product’s journey does not end at the supermarket. The distance consumers travel to buy their food, and the kind of transport they use will also add to its carbon footprint. (同样值得记住的是,产品的旅程并不在超市结束。消费者购买食物所走的距离以及他们使用的交通方式也会增加食物的碳足迹。)”及全文可知,文章通过分析不同因素对食物碳足迹的影响,可以看出作者的谨慎怀疑态度。故选C。

【答案】32.D 33.A 34.C

40.Because he experience a blending of his real self with his assumed characters. 41.It means that another person's characteristic will influence your own even when spending some time thinking about that person. 42.After taking the perspective of another, the self-knowledge of volunteers was changed - their self scores reached a higher level than before.
According to the finding, the volunteers’ self-scores would be more similar to those whose perspective they took. So the self-scores would not necessarily be higher. They could also be lower. 43.I would make use of the finding by spending time with or thinking about people who have qualities I admire and wish to develop in myself, thereby positively influencing my own sense of self.
根据文章第一段中“There is certainly evidence that actors experience a blending of their real self with their assumed characters. For instance, Benedict Cumberbatch said, “My mum says I’m much more impatient with her when I’m filming Sherlock.” (有确凿的证据表明,演员会将真实的自己与他们所扮演的角色融合在一起。例如,本尼迪克特·康伯巴奇说:“我妈妈说我在拍摄《神探夏洛克》时对她更不耐烦。”)”可知,Benedict在拍摄《神探夏洛克》时变得更加不耐烦是因为他真实的自我与他扮演的角色之间产生了混合。故答案为:Because he experienced a blending of his real self with his assumed characters.
根据文章第二段中“Across several studies, these researchers asked volunteers to first rate their own personalities, memories or physical attributes, and then to perform the same task from the perspective of another person. For instance, they might score the emotionality of various personal memories, and then rate how a friend or relative would have experienced those same events. (在几项研究中,这些研究人员要求志愿者首先评价自己的个性、记忆力或身体特征,然后从另一个人的角度来执行同样的任务。例如,他们可能会对各种个人记忆的情绪进行评分,然后对朋友或亲戚如何经历同样的事件进行评分。)”和第三段“After taking the perspective of another, the volunteers scored themselves once again: the consistent finding was that their self- knowledge was now changed—their self-scores had shifted to become more similar to those they’d given for someone else. For instance, if they had initially said the trait term “confident” was only moderately related to themselves and then rated the term as being strongly related to a friend’s personality, when they came to rescore themselves, they now tended to see themselves as more confident. It means that another person's characteristic will influence your own even when spending some time thinking about that person.
根据文章第三段中“After taking the perspective of another, the volunteers scored themselves once again: the consistent finding was that their self- knowledge was now changed—their self-scores had shifted to become more similar to those they’d given for someone else. (在从另一个人的角度出发后,志愿者们再次给自己打分:一致的发现是,他们的自我认知现在发生了变化——他们的自我评分变得更接近于他们给别人的评分。)”可知,根据这一发现,志愿者的自我评分与他们所持观点的人更相似,因此自我评分不一定更高,也可能更低。故答案为:After taking the perspective of another, the self-knowledge of volunteers was changed—— their self scores reached a higher level than before.
According to the finding, the volunteers’ self-scores would be more similar to those whose perspective they took. So the self-scores would not necessarily be higher. They could also be lower.
I would make use of the finding by spending time with or thinking about people who have qualities I admire and wish to develop in myself, thereby positively influencing my own sense of self.
