I was sitting in my high school classroom, nervously tapping my pencil against the desk as I awaited the start of the English exam.
As the clock struck, signaling the beginning of the exam, my heart began to race. I opened the exam booklet and scanned the questions, and I felt a wave of panic over me. The questions seemed foreign, and the topics unfamiliar. In a state of panic, I hurriedly wrote down my answers, hoping that somehow, by some stroke of luck, they would be correct. But as the minutes went by, I realized I couldn’t seem to make sense of the questions before me. As the final bell rang, I handed in my paper with a heavy heart.
In the days that followed, I couldn’t shake the feeling of failure that hung over me like a dark cloud. I replayed the exam over and over in my mind, analyzing every question, every answer, searching for clues as to where I had gone wrong.
But in the depression, a realization began to dawn on me I had failed, yes, but I had also learned valuable lessons along the way. Armed with this newfound wisdom, I ensured that I would do better next time. I threw myself into my studies with renewed determination, devouring books and practicing past exams with an eagerness I had never known before.
When the time came to retake the exam, I was ready. I approached each question with confidence and clarity, drawing upon the lessons I had learned from my previous missteps.
When the results were announced, I held my breath as I scanned the list of names. And there it was-my name, shining brightly among the list of successful candidates. At that moment, all the hard work, all the late nights and early mornings, were worth it.
And as I look back on that sunny afternoon in the high school classroom, I am grateful for the lessons it taught me, and the person it helped me become.

Do you get nervous thinking about geometry, equations (方程式) or a coming math test? If your answer is “yes”, you are far from alone. Math anxiety has become a common psychological (心理的) condition among students around the world. Students in countries with higher levels of math anxiety tend to achieve lower math grades, according to a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on Feb. 15.
Math anxiety—a negative emotional reaction to the core subject—causes fear, physical suffering and behavior problems among young pupils, according to a University of Cambridge study. In ordinary life, many people experience some degree of discomfort when meeting with a math problem, ranging from mild tension to strong fear.
Some people also experience physical symptoms such as sweaty palms or a racing heart. They may then try to avoid every situation involving numbers, meaning they are held back from pursuing careers related to this subject, such as science, technology or engineering, according to The Guardian.
Reassurance (慰藉) comes from the fact that those with math anxiety aren’t destined (注定的) to be bad at math. “If a child has math anxiety, don’t assume that they’re not good at math. They may have had a really bad experience with math and there are ways to improve math achievement,” Daniel Ansari, the senior author of the study told The London Free Press. “Students with math anxiety are not cognitively (认知地) disadvantaged.”
Also, there are ways to manage your stress related to math. If you’re feeling stressed before a math exam, it may help to spend a few minutes exploring those feelings before the exam begins. “It’s about making sure you’re interpreting your feelings correctly,” Sian Beilock, a cognitive scientist in the US told the BBC. “Just because you have a fast heartbeat and sweaty palms, that does not necessarily mean you will fail.”
A little math anxiety could be taken as a positive challenge to overcome. Just like many people get stage fright before delivering a speech, this nervous energy can help to motivate, according to Ian Lyons, a psychologist at Georgetown University in the US.
8. What does the author focus on in Paragraphs 2 and 3?
A. Analyzing causes. B. Proving examples.
C. Explaining influences. D. Drawing comparisons.
9. What message do Daniel Ansari’s words convey in Paragraph 4?
A. Math anxiety is what leads to students’ failure.
B. Math anxiety is what nearly everyone will face.
C. Math anxiety doesn’t necessarily mean poor math.
D. Math anxiety doesn’t necessarily allow improvement space.
10. How should you deal with the stress related to math according to the article?
A. Learn to understand your feelings.
B. Turn to cognitive experts for help.
C. Take all nervous energy as a challenge.
D. Practice more before taking math exams.
11. What is the best title for the passage?
A. What is anxiety? B. Worried by numbers
C. How to avoid studying math? D. Math test -a nightmare for all
D
“All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” But now scientists have given us another warning: too much play with smartphones or computers makes you dull too.
“Many focus on the benefits of digital devices (设备) in education but ignore the costs,” said Patricia Greenfield from the University of California, “losing the ability to understand the emotions of other people is one of the costs.” Greenfield and her research team did an experiment. They worked with 105 children who spend about 4.5 hours in front of screens on a school day. The students were asked to describe the emotions towards the pictures of people who were happy, sad, angry or scared. Then, half of them attended a five-day nature and science camp. There they had no smartphones, TV, or computers. The other half stayed in school and spent the five days as usual. Five days later, all the children took the test again.
Students who had been to the camp got about 5 percent more answers correct than they had done before the camp. But the other group of students didn’t show much improvement. The study is not perfect in some ways, said the researchers. But scientists say that the study is still a warning for us.
“Emotional skills develop in practice and the brain develops through real interaction,” said Professor Taylor, a professor at the University of San Francisco.
Researchers talked to 2000 parents of children aged 2 — 16 in the UK about what activities their children could do confidently. The results were surprising: their children could use a tablet (平板电脑) (59%) and work a mobile phone (57%) more confidently than they could tie their shoe laces (鞋带) (53%)! So, spend more time away from mobile phones and computers if you want to be an understanding friend, and not a member of what the Daily Mail called “Generation Helpless”.
12. According to Professor Greenfield, what’s the possible result of using digital media in education?
A. Being on bad terms with family members. B. Making more mistakes when taking exams.
C. Falling far behind others in all schoolwork. D. Failing to relate to other people’s emotions.
13. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. The background of the experiment B. The process of the experiment
C. The results of the experiment D. The purpose of the experiment
14. What do scientists think of the results of Greenfield’s experiment?
A. They are alarming for people. B. They are far from perfect.
C. They are quite surprising. D. They don’t need to be improved.
15. What’s the purpose of writing the text?
A. To warn us to stay away from the Internet.
B. To explain how people become the Internet addicts.
C. To advise children to spend less time on screens.
D. To show digital devices are essential for modern education.

Summer isn’t summer without the beach. For millions of Americans, hitting the sand is a time to catch waves, enjoy the sunshine, build sand castles, have picnics, spot wildlife and go exploring. ____16____. Here are some tips on how to be a better beachgoer, ensuring your favorite strip of sand remains lively.
Plastic isn’t fantastic.
One of the biggest contributors to beach litter is single-use plastic such as chip bags, candy wrappers and juice boxes. ____17____. Put meals in lunch bags or boxes, and bring drinks in water bottles or thermoses.
____18____.
It doesn’t matter how much time and effort you spent building a sand castle or digging the giant moat (壕沟) around it. If you are on a beach marked as a sea turtle habitat, fill in the moat and knock down the structure. Otherwise, they can die if they fall into a hole and get trapped.
Respect the animals.
The beach isn’t a petting zoo. People who love the creatures of the ocean have a desire to gain amazing experiences with them and have a connection to them, but don’t touch them. ____19____.
Read the signs.
Signs posted at the beach aren’t optional reading: they are there to alert you to where you can’t go, what you can’t do, and what you can’t take, so don’t mess with the local ecosystem or its inhabitants.
All the actions above may seem like little gestures, but they will serve as an inspiration to fellow beachgoers. ____20____.
A. Destroy what you build.
B. Keep off a turtle habitat.
C. Plastic toys break easily, leaving behind chips and pieces.
D. Work together, and individuals can really make a big difference.

【答案】Dear Henry,
I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble fitting in your new school and at a loss how to set goals. Such problems are quite common. Perhaps these tips will be helpful.
Firstly, it's better to set goals based on your abilities instead of pushing yourself too much. Next, if I were you, I would break big goals down into smaller ones, which will be easier to reach. What matters most is to stick to your goals and work hard towards them once they are set.
You may find achieving goals difficult, but as long as you stay positive and confident, you are sure to make it in the end!
Best wishes!
Yours sincerely
Su Hua
