More and more people believe that technologies are great for learning. Today, such teaching tools as iPads are used in a lot of courses, including language, history and science.
Many teachers are supporters of using iPads in language learning. They say that students now have much more time for discussion in the classroom. Instead of spending valuable class time listening to texts or watching teaching videos, students can do this on their own and come to class prepared for discussion.
The teachers also say that iPads allow students to learn at their own pace. Some students might listen to a dialogue only once and understand it, so they can save time for doing other things. Other students, however, might need to listen to the same dialogue again and again to understand it. Using iPads is especially helpful to students who are learning a language at different paces.
The students who are using the new tool in some courses are also happy. They believe that using iPads is a more enjoyable way to learn (such as listening to stories and watching movies). The class has become much more interesting and creative.
There are other advantages for students. By using iPads, they can pay more attention to the material and learn more. Teaching notes are stored in their iPads and are easy to find. Some students spend more time studying now. “I can listen to my language material or watch teaching videos on the bus, instead of having to wait until I get home,” a student explained.
Many adults complain that technologies such as iPads are doing harm to students. They worry that students might use iPads to download teaching notes and use them to cheat during exams. Some believe that iPads may separate students from each other. If a student spends more time watching videos on an iPad, he will have fewer opportunities to have face-to-face communication with others.
However, technologies are already a part of most students’ day-to-day lives. As for cheating, teachers can ask students to hand in their iPads when they take exams. Education needs to make changes with the times as technology is playing an important part. We should look forward to a wonderful future when iPads and other technologies can add a lot to the classroom.

People can be hurt when they feel they are not noticed. And 82 percent of all adults (not just phone owners) say that when people use their mobile phones at social gatherings, it at times hurts the conversation and atmosphere(气氛) of the gathering." However, most people use mobile phones in social situations even though they believe it is rude. Perhaps that' s because they see others doing it. People may use their phones at social events to share something from the event. That might be a photo, information, or to separate from the group.
In the study, about three-fourths of US adults view using mobile phones in public as acceptable when using public transportation, waiting in line, and walking down the street. But most US adults disapprove of cell phone use at the dinner table, in movie theaters, meetings. Then what about you? Do you use your mobile phone when you' re around others? Did you use your mobile phone at your last social event? Were other people using their phones too? Have people ever been rude to you when they used their mobile phones?

Languages have been coming and going for thousands of years, but in recent times there has been less coming and a lot more going. When the population of the world was hunter-gatherers, small, closely connected groups developed their own speech different from each other. Some language experts believe that 10,000 years ago, when the world had just five to ten million people, they spoke perhaps 12,000 languages between them.
Soon afterwards, many of those people started settling down to become farmers, and their languages also became more settled and fewer in number. In recent centuries, trade, industrialization, the development of the nation-state and the spread of education, especially globalization and better communications in the past few years, all have caused many languages to disappear, and dominant languages such as English, Spanish and Chinese are increasingly taking over.
At present, the world has about 6,800 languages. The distribution(分布) of these languages is hugely unbalanced. The general rule is that warm, pleasant areas have relatively few languages, often spoken by many people, while hot, wet areas have lots, often spoken by small numbers. Europe has only around 200 languages; the Americas about 1,000; Africa 2,400; and Asia and the Pacific perhaps 3,200, of which Papua New Guinea alone has well over 800. The median number (中位数) of speakers is only 6,000, which means that half the world’s languages are spoken by fewer people than that.
Already over 400 of the total of 6,800 languages are close to extinction (消亡), with only a few elderly speakers left. For example, Busuu in Cameroon (eight remaining speakers), Chiapaneco in Mexico (150), Lipan Apache in the United States (two or three) or Wadjigu in Australia (one, with a question-mark): none of these seems to have much chance of survival.
54. What can we learn about languages in hunter-gatherer times?
A. They were developing very fast. B. They were similar to each other .
C. They were large in number. D. They were closely connected.
55. Which of the following best explains “dominant” underlined in paragraph 2?
A. Powerful. B. Traditional. C. Simple. D. Modern.
56. How many languages are spoken by less than 6,000 people at present?
A. About 6,800. B. About 3,400. C. About 2,400. D. About 1,200.
57. What is the main idea of the text?
A. New languages will be created.
B. People’s lifestyles are seen in languages.
C. Language development depends on geography.
D. Human development leads to fewer languages.
C 55. A 56. B 57. D
When the world was still populated by hunter-gatherers, small, tightly knit (联系) groups developed their own patterns of speech independent of each other. Some language experts believe that 10,000 years ago, when the world had just five to ten million people, they spoke perhaps 12,000 languages between them.
根据文章第二段最后一句中 and dominant languages such as English, Spanish and Chinese are increasingly taking over 可知,dominant 的语言指的是渐渐变成主流(take over)的英语、西班牙语和中文这些在世界上被广泛使用的语言。
根据文章第三段最后一句 The median number (中位数) of speakers is a mere 6,000, which means that half the world's languages are spoken by fewer people than that. At present, the world has about 6,800 languages.
Languages have been coming and going for thousands of years, but in recent times there has been less coming and a lot more going. Already well over 400 of the total of 6,800 languages are close to extinction

On Christmas Eve—the night before Christmas Day—children all over Britain put a stocking at the end of their beds before they go to sleep. In Jim and Kate’s house, “Father Christmas” is really Mr Green. Mr Green doesn’t climb down the chimney. He waits until the children are asleep.
