(2024-2025学年高二上·江苏南通·单元检测)The true Olympic spirit has been displayed by Canadian cross-country ski coach Justin Wadsworth, who helped Russian athlete Anton Gafarov with his broken ski during the Men’s Sprint Free Semifinals.
Gafarov’s start wasn’t smooth. He fell three times, crashing early in the race and breaking his ski. It was clear that Gafarov was out of the race for the men’s finals and wouldn’t be able to compete for medals. Still, he wanted to finish in front of the home crowd, but his left ski was too badly damaged in the crash and its base had come off. The Russian skier faced finishing the race by walking to the line, not skiing.
However, the Russian’s fall was seen by Canadian coach Justin Wadsworth, who immediately ran on to the course and helped Gafarov. “I went over and gave him one of Alex Harvey’s, a member of the Canadian team who didn’t qualify for the finals. It was about giving Gafarov some dignity (尊严) so he didn’t have to walk to the finish area,” Wadsworth said. “We help because we know everyone works so hard in our sport,” says Wadsworth, who was an Olympic skier for the S before becoming a coach. “Everyone wants fair results. It was a matter of allowing Gafarov to finish the race.”
Gafarov was thoughtful about his performance. “My fall cost me a broken ski and a pole,” said Anton Gafarov, adding that he decided to continue fighting for the finals despite all the difficulties.
Gafarov believed the race should be finished in any way possible. “It was a matter of principle to hold on to the end,” he added. He is not devastated (毁灭) by his failure and is eager to take part in the next Winter Olympics despite back problems due to injuries.
4.What happened to Gafarov during the Men’s Sprint Free Semifinals?
A.He lost his ski in the unlucky crash.
B.He gave up the race after falling three times.

C
(2024-2025学年高二上·重庆·阶段练习)The Forsa Ring is an iron ring from Hälsingland, dating back to the 10th century. The inscription (铭文) on the ring describes fines for a specific crime, where payment was to be made in the form of oxen and silver. The ring is believed to have been used as a door handle and is currently the oldest known preserved legal text in Scandinavia. By changing the translation of the word “auk” from the previous interpretation “and” to the new interpretation “also” the meaning changes so that fines could be paid cither with an ox or with two ore of silver. An ore was equal to about 25 grams of silver.
“This indicates a much more flexible system, where both oxen and silver could be used as units of payment. If a person had easier access to oxen than to silver, they could pay their fines with an ox. On the contrary, if someone had silver but no oxen, they could pay with two ore of silver,” says Rodney Edvinsson.
The new interpretation shows that the Vikings had a system where both oxen and silver served as units of payment. This system allowed for multiple types of units of accounts to be used at the same time, reducing transaction (交易) difficulty and making it easier for individuals to meet their financial responsibilities. The new interpretation also agrees better with how the system functioned later according to later regional laws and is, according to Rodney Edvinsson, significant for our understanding of both Scandinavian and European history of money.
Edvinsson previously contributed to developing a historical consumer price index as far back as the 13th century, but this new interpretation provides insights into price levels even earlier in history. The study highlights the importance of using modern economic theories to interpret historical sources. By combining economic theory with archaeological (考古学的) and historical findings, new opportunities for cross-field research and a deeper understanding of early economic systems are opened up.
8.What can we learn from the first two paragraphs?
A.Vikings only accepted silver as payment for fines from crimes.
B.Vikings had no knowledge of legal systems before the 10th century.
C.The Forsa Ring inscription suggested punishments in oxen and silver.
D.The Forsa Ring was mainly used as a means of trading oxen and silver.
9.Which of the following is an advantage of the payment system?
A.People found it more convenient to pay their fines.
B.According to later regional laws, it functioned better.
C.It allowed for a unique kind of currency unit to be used.
D.It became easier for governments to settle their financial duties.
10.What is the significance of the new interpretation?
A.It is about 3 centuries older than Rodney Edvinsson’s previous study.
B.A new means of interpreting bistorical sources of inscription is available.
C.It shows that early Scandinavians had an advanced overall payment system.
D.Opportunities of cross-field research and understanding early economies emerge.
11.What is the best title of the passage?
A.Early Payment Systems in Scandinavia.
B.Interpretations of the Vikings’ Legal System.
C.New Insights into the Forsa Ring’s Inscription.
D.The Discovery of the Scandinavian Forsa Ring.

根据第一段中“The inscription (铭文) on the ring describes fines for a specific crime, where payment was to be made in the form of oxen and silver. (戒指上的铭文描述了对一项特定罪行的罚款,罚款的形式是牛和银。)”以及第二段中“This indicates a much more flexible system, where both oxen and silver could be used as units of payment. (这表明了一个更加灵活的系统,在那里牛和银都可以作为支付单位。)”可知,Forsa Ring上的铭文描述了特定犯罪的罚款,罚款应以牛和银的形式支付。因此,我们可以从这两段中了解到Forsa Ring的铭文表明用牛和银来支付罚款。故选C。
9.细节理解题。根据文章第三段中“The new interpretation shows that the Vikings had a system where both oxen and silver served as units of payment. This system allowed for multiple types of units of accounts to be used at the same time, reducing transaction (交易) difficulty and making it easier for individuals to meet their financial responsibilities. (新的解释表明,维京人有一种制度,其中牛和银都可以作为支付单位。这个制度允许同时使用多种类型的账户单位,降低了交易难度,使个人更容易履行其财务责任。)”可知,这个系统允许同时使用多种类型的账户单位,降低了交易难度,使个人更容易履行其财务责任。因此,人们可以更方便地支付罚款。故选A。
根据最后一段中“ By combining economic theory with archaeological (考古学的) and historical findings, new opportunities for cross-field research and a deeper understanding of early economic systems are opened up.(通过将经济理论与考古和历史发现相结合,为跨领域研究和对早期经济体系的更深入理解开辟了新的机会。)”
根据第一段“The Forsa Ring is an iron ring from Hälsingland, dating back to the 10th century. The inscription(铭文) on the ring describes fines for a specific crime, where payment was to be made in the form of oxen and silver. (Forsa Ring是一个铁戒指,来自Hälsingland,可以追溯到10世纪。戒指上的铭文描述了对一项特定罪行的罚款,罚款的形式是牛和银。)”以及通读全文,文章主要介绍了对Forsa Ring铭文的新解读,揭示了维京人的支付系统,因此最适合的标题是“New Insights into the Forsa Ring’s Inscription.(对Forsa Ring铭文的新见解)”符合题意。故选C。
D
(2024-2025学年高二上·河南·阶段练习)A recent study by researchers at the University of Cincinnati, led by Dr. Alberto Espay, challenges the common idea that monoclonal-antibodies (单克隆抗体) help slow down memory loss in Alzheimer’s patients by removing amyloid-plaques (淀粉样斑块).
Instead, the study shows that an unexpected increase in a key brain protein, called amyloid-beta 42 (Aβ42), is more closely linked to improvements in thinking ability. This research was published in the journal Brain on September 11. For many years, experts believed that amyloid-plaques, which form from Aβ42, harm the brain and cause Alzheimer’s disease. However, Dr. Espay and his team suggest a different theory. They believe the real problem is the loss of soluble (易溶解的) Aβ42, which is important for keeping brain cells healthy, rather than the buildup of plaques. Previous research from Dr. Espay’s group showed that Alzheimer’s symptoms appear when Aβ42 levels fall too low, not when plaque levels are high.
According to Dr. Espay, the formation of amyloid plaques may be the brain’s natural way of responding to stress, like changes in metabolism (代谢). He points out that many people get amyloid-plaques as they age but do not develop dementia (痴呆). Still, current treatments for Alzheimer’s focus on these plaques.
New monoclonal-antibody treatments, meant to clear amyloid, have shown benefits in clinical trials. Dr. Espay’s team studied data from almost 26,000 patients in 24 clinical trials of these antibody treatments. They found that these treatments also accidentally increased Aβ42 levels. This suggests that the improvement in thinking may be because of higher Aβ42 levels. not because of plaque removal.
While raising Aβ42 levels seems helpful, Dr. Espay warns that removing amyloid plaques could harm the brain by making it shrink faster. He suggests focusing on treatments that raise Aβ42 directly, without targeting amyloid plaques. “Increasing Aβ42 is the goal, ”he says, “but removing amyloid may not be the right way to do it.”
12.What’s the common idea of treating Alzheimer’s?
A.Reducing brain shrinkage. B.Increasing neuron activity.
C.Raising Aβ42 levels in the brain. D.Removing amyloid-plaques from the brain.
13.What do we know about Aβ42?
A.It is unrelated to the Alzheimer’s.
B.It is only harmful when it forms plaques.
C.Its loss may lead to Alzheimer’s symptoms.
D.It damages brain cells when its levels are high.
14.What can we infer from paragraph 3?
A.Everyone with amyloid plaques develops dementia.
B.Amyloid plaques may be a protective response by the brain.
C.Current Alzheimer’s treatments focus on raising Aβ42 levels.
D.Removing amyloid plaques guarantees better cognitive function.
15.Which of the following will Dr. Espay agree with?
A.Treatments should focus on raising Aβ42 levels.
B.Removing amyloid plaques will prevent Alzheimer’s.
C.Amyloid plaques are the main cause of Alzheimer’s disease.
D.Increasing Aβ42 levels through amyloid removal is always safe.
【答案】12.D 13.C 14.B 15.A
文章第一段提到“A recent study by researchers at the University of Cincinnati, led by Dr. Alberto Espay, challenges the common idea that monoclonal-antibodies (单克隆抗体) help slow down memory loss in Alzheimer’s patients by removing amyloid-plaques (淀粉样斑块). ( 辛辛那提大学研究人员最近的一项研究挑战了这样一种普遍观点:单克隆抗体通过清除淀粉样斑块来帮助阿尔茨海默症患者减缓记忆丧失。)”可知,常见的观念是单克隆抗体通过清除大脑中的淀粉样斑块来帮助减缓阿尔茨海默症患者的记忆丧失。因此,选项D“Removing amyloid-plaques from the brain.(从大脑中清除淀粉样斑块。)”
根据第二段中“Instead, the study shows that an unexpected increase in a key brain protein, called amyloid-beta 42(Aβ42), is more closely linked to improvements in thinking ability. (该研究显示,一个关键的大脑蛋白质——β淀粉样蛋白42(Aβ42)的意外增加与思维能力的提高更为密切相关。)”以及本段中“However, Dr. Espay and his team suggest a different theory. They believe the real problem is the loss of soluble(易溶解的)Aβ42, which is important for keeping brain cells healthy, rather than the buildup of plaques. Previous research from Dr. Espay’s group showed that Alzheimer’s symptoms appear when Aβ42 levels fall too low, not when plaque levels are high.
根据第三段中“According to Dr. Espay, the formation of amyloid plaques may be the brain’s natural way of responding to stress, like changes in metabolism (代谢). (根据Espay博士的说法,淀粉样斑块的形成可能是大脑对压力,如代谢变化的自然反应。)”可知,Espay博士认为淀粉样斑块的形成可能是大脑对应激的自然反应,就像代谢变化一样。这表明淀粉样斑块可能是大脑的一种保护性反应,因此B选项“Amyloid plaques may be a protective response by the brain.(淀粉样斑块可能是大脑的保护性反应。)”
根据最后一段中“While raising Aβ42 levels seems helpful, Dr. Espay warns that removing amyloid plaques could harm the brain by making it shrink faster. He suggests focusing on treatments that raise Aβ42 directly, without targeting amyloid plaques. (虽然提高Aβ42水平似乎有所帮助,但Espay博士警告说,清除淀粉样蛋白斑块可能会通过加速大脑萎缩而对大脑造成伤害。他建议专注于直接提高Aβ42水平的治疗方法,而不是针对淀粉样蛋白斑块。)”可知,Espay博士表示, 目标是提高 Aβ42 的水平, 而不是专注于去除淀粉样斑块。因此, 他会同意治疗应该集中在提高 Aβ42 水平。故选A。

Dear Jim,
I am more than happy to hear from you and answer your question why Chinese people rarely show their faces on We-chat’s profile picture.
There are some reasons for the phenomenon. Some people don’t want to meet with ill comments on their appearances, some think of the profile picture as a chance to make a statement, which shows their personality, and others just want to protect their privacy because no one knows what strangers will do with that. I think avoiding our own photos makes the internet world funnier and more entertaining.
Looking forward to your early reply. Best wishes!
Yours,

Henry finished rolling copies of The Gazette, filled his bag and took off to deliver the news.
It was 8:15 a.m. when he delivered the last newspaper. He had put the paper where Mr.Grady could get it without struggling to the sidewalk. Across the street, Henry’s delivery had landed perfectly too. Mrs. Burke, with twin babies, probably liked having her paper within easy reach.
Henry parked his bike near the office building and bounded up to the editor-in-chiefs door. Mr. Trotta said, “We’re closing shop, Henry. Advertising is down. Television is how people get their news today.”
“Um, no,” said Henry. “I’ve met so many people on my route. It’s sad. People won’t get their neighborhood news anymore.”
Mr. Trotta nodded and sighed. “We held out as long as we could," he said. “You were terrific, Henry — always dependable.”
A week after his last deliveries, Henry wondered if his customers missed The Gazette as much as he did. He thought of a way to find out. He started out on his old route with a notebook. First stop: Mr. Jonas, 17 Oak. Mr. Jonas said that he liked reading the week’s happenings and he had a pile of comics from old copies of The Gazette. He wondered if anyone would want them. Henry made a note in his notebook.
Mrs. Burke said she needed a babysitter. She was going to put an ad in The Gazette, but…
As Henry made more notes, an idea started forming in his head. Maybe he could create a newsy page for the neighbors. But how would he print it? He went to the library and explained everything to Miss Ginger, the librarian. “Follow me,” she said. Seconds later, in front of a machine, Miss Ginger turned a handle and a purple-printed sheet rolled out. “ Will mimeographed (油印的) copies work?” she asked.
“Perfect.”
Henry had a plan.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Customers cheered Henry’s idea. Besides Mrs. Burke who longed for a babysitter and Mr. Simon who desired a large audience for his concert, Henry also collected six other neighbors appealing and needs, including Mr Grady who yearned for his children’s coming back for a short reunion. Information in hand, Henry knocked at Mr. Trotta’s door and pleaded for his support in publishing his first Oak Street News, who approved almost immediately. Soon, Henry’s tabloid was in circulation, which he cheerfully delivered from door to door as before.
Henry typed the news, mimeographed purple copies, and delivered the first Tree Streets News on Saturday. Neigh bons applauded the idea of sharing their needs in a communal newspaper, which really addressed their immediate concern in a practical and efficient way. As Mrs Burke successfully found an ideal babysitter, Mr Simon secured a large following for his concert and Mr Grady who happily reunited with his kids. Henry realized. from his deep heart, that The Gazette was far from gone in this TV era, but transformed into Oak Street News that connected, bonded and tied the Oak neighbors in a cory fabric.
