Though many people think of summer as a time to slow down and enjoy a vacation, it can also be the perfect time to make money or get experience. Here are some good summer jobs for you.
Survey-taking
Survey-taking is a way to make money during your summer holiday, especially if you live in an
area that doesn’t have many chances. With a computer or smartphone, you can sit on your sofa and search for survey sites such as Surveys On The Go, InboxDollars or Swagbucks. Without much effort, you can start making money for your opinions. However, the ease of use comes with a low earning potential.
Food Delivery(递送)
If you enjoy driving, you can use your car to deliver food. You can sign up to deliver food from restaurants with services such as Uber Eats, DoorDash and Grubhub. Another choice is delivering daily used goods with services such as Postmates, Shipt and Instacart. The earning potential for delivery can be higher than for other jobs because customers often give tips. The disadvantage is that these jobs require you to put in more time.
Photo Applications
If you go to the mall, you can use an app such as Field Agent or Gigwalk to make money by taking pictures of products in stores. See any help-wanted signs in the store windows? Take a picture and get paid for each one you find.
House Sitting and Pet Care
Summer is a time when people take vacations and may need someone to look after their homes or pets. Services such as HouseSitter and MindMyHouse connect homeowners with proper house sitters(看房人). For animal lovers who would rather care for someone’s pet while they are away, you

can turn to services like Rover.
21. What do we know about making money through Survey-Taking?
A. It’s interesting. B. It takes much time.
C. It requires little effort. D. It requires special knowledge.
22. Why is the earning potential for Food Delivery higher than for other jobs?
A. You can get some extra reward. B. You work longer hours.
C. You need to drive your own car. D. You deliver food for many people.
23. Which app should you use if you enjoy looking after animals?
A. Swagbucks. B. Uber Eats. C. HouseSitter. D. Rover.

In December 2004, I had just become a professional photographer and was working on a project about communities who live on the sea, known as sea nomads (海上游牧民族). I was living with members of the Chao-Ley tribe (部落) on a small island in southern Thailand. We didn’t share a language and relied on body language to communicate.
I went out to sea with them regularly. One morning, I was due to set out with a group of six Chao-Ley fishermen in a small boat. The sea looked different, with the water totally still.
About 20 minutes after we left and a few miles out in the open sea, one of the fishermen pointed
to a small white spot far in the distance. It was getting bigger and bigger very quickly. This was a tsunami (海啸) wave speeding through the ocean.
Usually, the deeper the water, the weaker the wave. But we weren’t out far enough to be safe, nor
close enough to shore to make it back in time. We were stuck. I began to feel really scared.
The captain told the six of us where to sit, so we would balance out the boat. My camera was in
my backpack. I wanted to capture the scene, but I couldn’t. Any movement would imbalance the boat. Suddenly there was a huge noise. The wave hit the boat, but in a flash the skilled captain managed to swerve (使突然转向) us up and onto the wave. Then the boat moved from the tip of the wave down into safe waters. Our eyes and mouths were wide open, and everyone let out heavy sighs. The captain had saved us all.
Surviving gave me a deep understanding of how important life can be. I’ve been going back to Southeast Asia almost every year since. The photography project has become a thank-you to the people who saved my life. The picture I wanted to take on the boat remains “the one that got away” — I think every photographer has one. But mine changed my life.
24. What happened before the author set out with the fishermen?
A. The captain wanted to cancel the trip. B. He noticed something unusual.
C. They saw a white spot in the distance. D. It looked like it was about to rain.
25. When did the author start to feel frightened?
A. When the boat shook violently. B. When the boat was about to be hit.
C. When he realized they were trapped. D. When fishermen on the boat felt nervous.
26. What was the author doing when the tsunami wave hit the boat?
A. Helping the captain swerve. B. Trying not to move.
C. Taking a photo of the wave. D. Reaching for his backpack.
27. What did the author learn from his experience?
A. Opportunity never knocks twice. B. Life is too short to be wasted.
C. Sometimes regrets in life can save us. D. We should have the courage to take risks.
C
We’re all familiar with the feeling — it usually starts with a little itch (痒) deep inside the nose. Next comes the awareness that it’s going to happen. Then, achoo! Air erupts out of our nose at an
第 3 页 共 8 页
astonishing 100 miles per hour, bursting out whatever was causing the itch. The high-pressure from a sneeze (喷嚏) has led some people to think that if we didn’t close our eyes, they could pop out.
For decades, countless people have tested the theory. Upon finding it almost impossible to keep
their eyes open while sneezing, many have concluded that the theory must be true. If you try it
yourself, the chances are that your eyes are still where they belong. That’s because they are held firmly by the muscles in the eyes. Furthermore, increased pressure from sneezing actually builds up in
the blood vessels (血管), which may cause vessels to break but is less likely to cause the eyeballs to
pop out.
Why did this theory start, anyway? Some say that it all began in 1882, when the New York Times reported an incident of a woman who burst one of her eyeballs during a sudden sneeze. Others point at the fact that different high-pressure experiences, such as childbirth, can cause blood vessels in the eyes to pop. Still others say that closing our eyes when we sneeze shows the theory is true. Scientists, on the other hand, explain that we close our eyes for the same reason we sneeze — to prevent unwanted things from entering our bodies. Either way, as far as we know, there are no actual recorded cases of anyone losing an eyeball because of a sneeze, so don’t lose any sleep over it!
28. What is mainly talked about in paragraph 1?
A. The cause of a sneeze. B. The danger of sneezing.
C. The importance of a sneeze. D. The experience of sneezing.
29. Why won’t eyeballs pop out while people are sneezing?
A. Because they are fixed firmly in the eyes. B. Because high pressure builds up in the eyes.
C. Because they are held strongly by blood vessels.
D. Because increased pressure prevents them from popping out.
30. What can we infer from the text?
A. Sneezes usually cause an itchy nose. B. People sneeze to burst out unwanted things.
C. The high pressure caused by a sneeze will be released through breathing.
D. People close their eyes when sneezing to stop their eyeballs from popping out.
31. Where is the text most likely from?
A. A research paper. B. A biology textbook.
C. A guidebook. D. A magazine.
D
Humans evolve (进化) from apes. This is what we learned in biology class. But what came before apes? Chinese scientists have discovered fossils (化石) that could enrich the evolutionary story of how humans evolved from fish.
According to four articles published in the journal Nature in late September, Chinese researchers found fish fossils that provide the “missing link” about the origin of the jaw (下颚), a key feature that
99.8 percent of vertebrate (脊椎动物) species have.
Zhu Min, a lead researcher of the studies from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said that the findings drew a large amount of interest in the science world because of the importance of jaws in animal evolution.
However, the rise of the jaw had been a secret for a lack of enough fossil evidence to support that
jawed vertebrates lived 450 million years ago.
The latest findings made by Zhu’s team presented a set of five surprisingly well-preserved fish fossils that included three whole-bodied fish, helping scientists paint a more correct evolutionary picture of the origin of the jaw. The fish fossils were discovered at two places in Chongqing and Guizhou, whose strata (岩层) date back to the Silurian Time (志留纪) that began around 440 million years ago.
第 4 页 共 8 页
These fossils show that jawed fish were already rising in the world’s ancient oceans at that time. Later, more different and larger jawed fish evolved and began to spread around the world, paving the way for some fish to finally go on land and evolve into other animals — including humans.
“These fossils provide a good opportunity to understand the ‘dawn of fish’ and help scientists
trace many human body structures back to these ancient fish thus filling some key gaps in the evolutionary history of how fish evolved into humans,” Zhu said.
32. In which column of a magazine will you most probably read the passage?
A. Entertainment. B. Animals. C. Science. D. History.
33. Why did the findings draw a large amount of interest in the science world?
A. Because there is a lack of fish fossils. B. Because jaws are a key feature of all species.
C. Because the missing of the jaw had been a mystery.
D. Because jaws are significant while animals evolve.
34. What does the underlined phrase “at that time” refer to?
A. Around 440 million years ago. B. Around 450 million years ago.
C. When fish evolved into humans. D. When jawed fish began to spread around the world.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Who Are Our Ancestors? B. What Came Before Apes?
C. The Origin of the Jaw D. Key Steps in Evolution

Ali and his younger sister, Zahra, lived with their parents in a poor neighborhood. Their mother
was very sick and their father was struggling to find a job, and they had only a little money with which to buy food. As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was breathing down their necks (盯着他们).
One day, Ali took Zahra’s shoes to a shoe repairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn’t until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it secret. Zahra agreed and the two decided to share Ali’s running shoes. Zahra’s school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Ali. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he could, Ali often arrived late and was warned by the school.
Ali heard about a long distance race that was held for the boys in the city. When he learned that
the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes.
The day of race arrived. Ali had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired
and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more tired he thought only of Zahra and his promise to her. Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength and he stayed right behind the two fastest runners, determined to finish third. Suddenly, as the finishing line drew near, another runner collided (碰撞) with Ali from behind and he crashed to the ground.

M: I want to rent a unique car you have. What would it be?
W: We have a wide selection of cars.
M: That sounds interesting. Can I see them?
W: Definitely. May I ask if you need a car for a road trip, or maybe an interview for a new job?
M: Actually, neither. My wife dreams of driving a cool car.
W: Oh, I see. That’s our selection. The red one is $249 per day. The gray one you see over there is $229 per day. Which one do you prefer?
M: Honestly, I think they’re both really expensive.
W: Maybe you will be interested in the black one? It is only $140 per day. And the weekly rent on the car will be $980.
M: What if I keep a car for half a day?

W: Hmm. I need to ask our manager … OK. It could be arranged. Which one will you take?
M: I’ll take that red one.

Do you like pasta and pizza? Italian food culture appears in front of us in its full diversity. An interesting fact is that cooking differs from each other in various parts of Italy.
The northern region has always been famous for animal farming. People there mainly have butter, milk and meat.
Moreover, meat is usually served in large pieces. And if cut into small pieces, it is used to make sauce. The South provides a good harvest of fruits and vegetables. Herbs are grown there, which are then added to food.
On average, a dinner in Italy, not in the most expensive restaurant for two people with wine, will cost up to 50 euros.
There are also other choices: takeaway food or “tourist menu” — an Italian business lunch, which costs around 20 euros. The price is reasonable. It includes a main dish, a salad, a dessert and a drink.
And, of course, one more thing we have to mention, Italian coffee. Believe me, even in an ordinary café in any city of
Italy, coffee will be better than that in many places around the world. You can’t miss it
