Almost all animals need to sleep to stay healthy. But sleeping can also be dangerous because other animals may hurt those who are sleeping. This leads to many different ways of sleeping that help them stay safe. Some of these ways may surprise you!
Almost all bats sleep upside down. They hang from a branch of a tree or the ceiling of a cave. Up high, bats are safe from most other animals. If they are in danger, they just fly away.
A dolphin sleeps with just half its brain at a time. It must stay awake to breathe and to watch for danger. Dolphin mothers and babies can go without sleep for as long as two months to stay safe.
Some ducks sleep with just half their brains, too. These ducks often sleep in a line. The ducks at both ends help to keep the group safe. They keep one eye open to watch for danger. The ducks in the middle sleep deeply with both eyes closed.
Seals breathe air, but that doesn’t stop some of them from sleeping underwater. They hold their breath and dive deep to sleep for up to twenty minutes at a time. Sleeping deep underwater helps these seals stay safe from animals that hunt them near the surface.
Horses often sleep standing up. Their legs lock in place so they don’t fall over. If a horse is lying down, it needs a long time to get up. A horse can run from danger more quickly if it is already standing.
Some seabirds can sleep while they fly. These large birds spend most of their lives over the ocean. They are in danger on the water, but they are safe in the air. They fly for many hours without flapping(拍打)their wings. Sometimes they sleep while they are flying.

Do you know your mobile phone number well? You may sometimes find it hard to remember your number. That’s because China has the longest mobile phone numbers in the world. Why is that?
The 11 digits (数字) include three parts. Each part has a different meaning. The first three numbers tell you the mobile phone service provider (服务提供商) you are using. For example, 135 is for the China Mobile Communication Corporation (中国移动) and 188 is for China Unicorn (中国联通). The fourth to the seventh digits tell you where the number is from. And the last four digits are random (随机的).
The main reason for using 11 digits is that we have the largest population (人口) in the world. We once had 10 numbers. But as our population grew, there were not enough numbers for us to use. So we began to use 11 digits from 1999.
11 digits can make tens of billions of mobile phone numbers. That’s enough for each person to have seven or eight phone numbers to use in China. Also, we can reuse the mobile phone numbers. Usually, the service provider will use a canceled number again after three to six months. If you call a number that you haven’t called for a long time, you may find its owner has changed.
Besides China, Britain and Japan also use 11-digit mobile phone numbers. But their numbers always start with 0. So they cannot make as many numbers as we can. Countries like the United States, Australia and India use phone numbers with 10 digits. Canada’s mobile phone numbers are perhaps the world’s shortest: they use seven digits.
16.What can we learn from the mobile phone number 188-4792-8343?
A.The service provider is the China Mobile Communication Corporation.
B.The digits 4792 tell you the area the mobile phone number is from.
C.There are ten digits in the mobile phone number.
D.The digits 8343 tell you the number of service providers in China.
17.Why do we use 11-digit mobile phone numbers in China?
A.There are many people in China.
B.People in China can remember numbers well.
C.11 is a lucky number for Chinese people.
D.It helps people to remember more phone numbers.
18.What does the underlined word “canceled” mean?
A.out of time B.out of use
C.out of sight D.out of breath
19.Which of the following can make the most mobile phone numbers?
A.10 digits starting with 1 B.11 digits starting with 0
C.11 digits starting with 1 D.10 digits starting with 0
20.Which countries use phone numbers with 10 digits?
A.Britain and Japan. B.Britain and China.
C.Canada and Australia. D.India and Australia.

SHENZHEN political adviser Chen Zhihong has proposed (提议) building Shekou Fisherman’s Wharf (码头) in Shekou, Nanshan District into a tourist site at the Second Session of the Seventh Shenzhen Municipal Committee of the CPPCC (深圳市政协第七届二次会议), Shenzhen Economic Daily reported.
The renovation (翻新) of the Fisherman’s Wharf started in April 2018, in order to turn the wharf into an entertainment, a cultural exchange, education, tourism and housing complex (综合体).
However, many old and damaged boats are still docked (停靠) at the wharf due to historical reasons. These don’t match the surrounding environment and might cause a fire risk or pollute the waters.
Chen thus called for applying first-class standards to build the wharf into an international coastal tourism destination. At the same time, the construction can contribute to Nanshan District’s move to build the area into an innovative (创新的) coastal city center, according to Chen.
Additionally, Chen advised tourist viewing platforms to be added at the wharf and urged related departments to learn about the number and types of boats, and reasons for currently docking at the wharf.
Chen also proposed no longer allowing commercial ships to dock at the wharf unless they are sheltering from a typhoon. He suggested the berthing sites (靠泊点) be moved to Humen in Dongguan City, Aotou in Huizhou City and Fuyong in Bao’an District because the wharf’s water has poor self-purification capabilities.
21.When did the renovation of the wharf begin?
A.Last year. B.Two years ago. C.Three years ago. D.Four years ago.
22.What problems are caused by the boats docking at the wharf?
A.They don’t match the environment. B.They might cause a fire.
C.They might pollute the waters. D.All of the above.
23.Which is NOT the proposal from Chen Zhihong?
A.Building the wharf into a tourist site.
B.Allowing commercial ships to dock at the wharf.
C.Adding tourist viewing platforms at the wharf.
D.Urging related departments to know more about the docking boats.
24.Why did Chen Zhihong suggest moving the berthing sites?
A.Because there are typhoons at the wharf every year.
B.Because Humen, Aotou and Fuyong are close to the wharf.
C.Because the wharf is poor in purifying its water.
D.Because there are too many ships docking at the wharf.
25.Where can you probably read the passage?
A.In a storybook. B.In a newspaper.
C.In a sports magazine. D.In a tour guide.

Art can show humans’ creative mind. But these years, you may read news about (AI人工智能) creating its own art 26 But this worry seems to be unnecessary, at least for now. AI is bringing artists more possibilities, not taking the place of artists. 27
These days, a piece of music created by AI became hot online. AI turns the novel corona virus (新冠病毒) into a piece of two-hour long music on its protein structure (蛋白质结构氨基酸). 28 Listeners found this music made them see the virus from a new point of view.
29 AI truly helps artists create things that they ever thought impossible before.
30 For example, AI now can help to color in black-and-white lines in making cartoons so that it could help artists save much time.
We hope that AI can become a useful helper to make a difference to the art world if it’s welcomed and trusted.
A.The AI then turned these notes into music.
B.Because many artists today are turning AI into a useful helper.
C.Not only create art works, AI can also do simple jobs for artists.
D.Some people worry that AI might someday take the place of artists.
E.This surprising relationship between science and art could never be reached without AI.
F.People should think about if humans and AI can work together to create art works in the future.

46.例文
Dear friends,
Last Friday, our school held a science festival. All the students had a really good time in it.
Two thirds of the students went to the cinema. They watched a film about the inventor Edison. The rest of the students attended the robot competition. They showed the robots made by themselves. These robots have different shapes. Some robots are as big as cars. Some are as small as cups. Some robots can help students with their study, like answering the students’ questions. This reduces the use of computers and mobile phones. Some robots are like snakes. If the buildings fall down, the robots can help look for people under the buildings.
I am more and more interested in science and technology. At the same time, I’m amazed at how fast technology is developing in China. I am proud of China.
I can’t wait to take part in the science festival next year.
That’s all. Thanks.
