I woke up in the morning, excited but nervous, as today was the day I would begin my journey of high school. Thousands of thoughts rushed through my mind “Will I fit in? Will I make friends? Will I have nice teachers? Will I be bullied (欺凌)?” When I panicked, my mum assured me I would be fine if I followed school rules. Off I went in my uniform, hoping for the best possible outcome (结果). We met at the school hall with welcoming smiles. I could feel the tension, but I was not the only one feeling this way. We then had a tour of the school. Then, we headed for our first class to meet our classmates. I was happy with my class, as no kid in my class was mean to one another. As the lunch bell rang, chaos arose -- kids rushing in all directions to the dining hall, hoping not to get caught in the line-up. I went and sat down with my friends from last year. We chatted about our holidays and what their first lesson of high school was like. Before we knew it, we were back in class. We got to know our teachers a bit more -- we had the best teachers of all. The teachers were strict with us in class, but they were friendly and nice. Before I knew it, the day was over. I don't know why I panicked or was frightened at all. High school may seem scary but it's just like primary or kindergarten. My first day of high school taught me: I shouldn't be so quick as to judge about something I haven't even tried. I love high school now, it's the best thing of all. I hope your first day will be one of the best days of your life too. 21. Why did the author feel nervous at the beginning? A. She had difficulty fitting in high school. B. She had no friends in the new school. C. Life in high school was uncertain. D. Her teachers were not nice at all. 22.What does the underlined word "chaos" in Paragraph 5 mean? A. Anger. B. Mess. C. Fight. D. Hunger. 23. What did the author learn on her first day at high school? A. Experience is the mother of wisdom. B. The early bird catches the worm. C. Slow and steady wins the race. D. East or west, home is best. B As I cried in a hotel room in Osaka, a phone pressed to my right ear, my father was giving me his final advice from his death bed in Ireland. The man who inspired me to become a travel journalist wanted to remind me I had the best job in the world. While “don’t stop” was his last message to me, “won't stop” could have been his motto (座右铭). Even as be entered his late 60s, badly affected by a physical disability, my father continued to travel. Not package holidays or lying in a hammock (吊床). Instead, he explored foreign cities on foot until they seeped into his pores(毛孔). Adventures were what he desired. Once I began traveling with my father 15 years ago, small talk always changed into discussion of our next journey, I loved few things more than surprising him with a new trip I'd booked for us. This was how our final adventure began. In our Athens apartment, I found his feet swelled up (肿胀) enormously. His ankles had given him constant discomfort. Whenever I suggested we take a break, he'd say: “You can sit down if you want, I've got something I want to go see over there.” His physical limitations were simply overpowered by his desire to experience something new. He walked all over Bucharest, Athens and Rome. By the end of the trip, his mind could no longer control his body. His left ankle was twice the size of his right. His chest was congested(充血的). Dad spent weeks in hospital back in Ireland. He was completely paralyzed (瘫痪的), unable to see or talk or eat. Yet, he remained conscious, Doctors encouraged us to chat to him, even though he could not respond. Day after day, I sat by his hospital bed and talked about our funniest moments while traveling. Eventually, he came out of his paralysis(瘫痪). When doctors said he was almost ready to go home, I took the chance to fly to Asia for my journalism job. Then, in the middle of a cold night, my phone rang. Our final conversation took place. Jokes were exchanged, and promises were made. Among them was my agreement that I wouldn't stop traveling. 24. What did the author love doing after joining his dad in adventure? A. Visiting Asian countries. B. Reading adventure novels. C. Surprising his dad with his adventures. D. Arranging trips unexpected to his dad. 25. What can we learn about the author's dad? A. He worked as a journalist. B. He was a man of strong will. C. He desired to be a famous explorer. D. He enjoyed hiking in the mountains. 26. What did the author do while keeping his dad company in hospital? A. He told stories to his dad. B. He planned their next trip. C. He assisted his dad to do exercise. D. He looked back on their time spent time together. 27. What is the best title for the text? A. My dad, the explorer. B. A half-done journey. C. A parting gift-don't stop. D. One last journey with my dad. C The world's elderly population is increasing fast. The number of older people -- those who are 60 years of age or older -- is expected to double by 2050 across the world. This comes with an increasing need for caregivers that are able to provide 24-hour care, not only at hospitals or nursing homes, but also at private homes. Robotic assistants (助手) are expected to become increasingly popular and reach 450, 000 by 2045 because the expected caregivers are not enough in the United States. “Unluckily, the hard outside structure of caregiving robots nowadays prevents them from communicating with humans safely and easily,” said Ramses Martinez, a professor in the School of Industrial Engineering. “After all, would you leave the old people with health problems in the hands of a robot?” However, recent progress in material science has made it possible to produce robots with the ability to reshape when touched They are called soft robots. However, the design (设计), production, and control of soft robots now stop this technology being put into use. Recently Martinez and other Purdue University researchers have developed a new design method that can make the design and production of the soft robots easy by using a 3D printer. The soft robots can move like humans. “They can complete some movements easily such as holding things, spreading or drawing back arms and legs and kneeing down. This invention moves a big step forward toward the development of lightweight soft robots,” Martinez said. There searchers are now looking for partners to test their technology and put it into practice. 28. What will be the result of the increasing elderly population according to the text? A. More nursing services will be needed. B. More hospitals will be built in the future. C. More people will choose to be nursed at home. D. More nursing work will be caried out by robots 29. What does Ramses Martinez mean in Paragraph 2? A. People doubt the ability of robotic assistants. B. More types of robotic assistants need to be developed. C. The robotic assistants nowadays aren't perfect for nursing. D. The robotic assistants can't understand the elderly correctly. 30. What makes the new type of robot be able to change shapes? A. A special material. B. The production method. C. The 3D printing technology. D. A newly developed design method. 31. What's the best title for the text? A. The development of robots is rapid. B. The 3D printer can create soft robots C. The increasing elderly population is a problem. D. Robots created with 3D printers will nurse the elderly. D Yesterday, people on the social media site Twitter reacted with surprise and humor to a report that claimed, “Scientists have taught spinach(菠菜)to send emails,” That's not exactly true, but the “news” is based on some amazing work done by MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) scientists in 2016, and it's still worth learning about. Scientists at MIT have managed to change ordinary spinach plants into natural sensors, which can detect chemicals used in bombs. Using a cheap and small computer system, the spinach can even send a warning email. The secret to giving spinach these special powers is nanotechnology. For this experiment, the scientists placed two different kinds of nanotech(纳米的) materials into spinach plants: some were tiny sensors; others were tiny tubes called carbon nanotubes(纳米管). To get the tiny materials into the plants, the scientists put a liquid containing the nano-materials on the bottom of the plants' leaves. That's where the plants normally take in CO₂ gas. Once the tiny sensors and nanotubes were in the spinach leaves, the plants did the rest of the work. As part of their natural process, the spinach plants pull water through their roots and into their leaves. If the water contains certain chemicals that are used in bombs, the sensors in the leaves make the nanotubes give off a slightly different kind of light. By watching the plants constantly using a camera attached to a cheap computer, the scientists set up a system that can send a warning email if chemicals from explosives are detected in the water. The researchers say it takes about 10 minutes for the plants to react to the chemicals. The computer the scientists used is about the size of a playing card. They say that in the future, their system could even use a cellphone with its camera changed slightly. Detecting chemicals used in bombs is just one of the many uses the researchers are exploring. The scientists believe that in the future, such a system could give farmers detailed information about the health of the land and water on their farms. 32. Why is the report mentioned in the first paragraph? A. To tell a joke made by MIT scientists. B. To introduce the health benefits of spinach C. To criticize misleading news on social media. D. To bring up the topic of a scientific experiment. 33. What is the function carbon nanotubes in spinach leaves? A. To supply energy to spinach. B. To detect spinach's lack of water. C. To measure CO, absorbed by spinach. D. To make spinach shine in a special way. 34. What do the scientists expect of their system? A. It will take effect immediately. B. It will be applied to agriculture. C. It will be expanded to other plants. D. It will use a playing card-sized cellphone. 35.What is the text mainly about? A. Scientists teach spinach to send work emails. B. Scientists create spinach that can test for bombs. C. Scientists change the composition of spinach we eat. D. Scientists use nanotechnology to increase spinach production. 第二节(共5小题,每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 Wanting to be more responsible is admirable. Being responsible can seem hard at first but if you keep at it, it will become second nature to you! Below are some tips on how to become responsible. Place others’ needs before your own. When you have a family, friends, or pets, being responsible may mean placing their needs above your own. That doesn't mean you don't take care of yourself. 36 Learn to think about other people's thoughts and feelings. Empathy(同情) is feeling what other people feel. When you say something or do something, think about how it will make the other person feel. If you're not sure, consider how it would make you feel. 37 Make a schedule to plan your time. Whether you have a daily planner or use a phone app, schedule helps you stay on top of your responsibilities. It reminds you of what you need to be doing. 38 Write out the appointments you have, the places you go every day, and the housework you need to get done each day. 39 One aspect of being responsible is not putting off your tasks until after you’ve had fun. Start by doing what you need to get done first, and then you can relax and have fun afterward. Keep your long-term commitments.
