As a student growing up in Pakistan, Riffat Arif, now known to all as Sister Zeph, dreamed of a teacher who gives respect and love to children with no difference. She would be that teacher. So, in 1997, at the age of just 13, she founded a school in the courtyard of her home, free to all. Children were to be treated with love and respect; beatings were not allowed.
Her parents were not in a position to help her. So at 13, she learned to do embroidery (刺绣). That was the first income she started generating to support her cause. She would work 8 hours a day, teach her students 4 hours and teach herself 4 hours. She never went back to any institution. She would prepare for exams, take her exam fee to the institution and get a degree. That’s how she got two master’s degrees, in political science and history.
She would take the little children in her lap and she would teach them that way. When a teacher shows such affection to the children, they feel protected, they feel like they are not far from home, they are just with another mother. She wanted teachers to be like that. She wanted children to be pampered and have a good childhood. They are like rose petals (花瓣), and we should treat them like that.
And now, selected from over 7,000 nominations from 130 countries, Sister Zeph has been awarded the largest annual global prize for teachers, the Varkey Foundation Global Teacher Prize 2023,S1 million. “Her contribution to education has touched countless lives and earned her numerous awards, recognizing her as a true change-maker and advocate for women’s rights and children’s education around the world,” said the official citation.
Love is the language that everybody can understand. Love is the language that has no boundaries for religion or financial background. Love is everywhere and everyone needs love.
24. Why did Sister Zeph set up a school in her hometown?
A. To live her dream. B. To meet her parents’ wishes.
C. To raise money for her exam fee. D. To gain support from an organization.
25. What does the underlined word “pampered” in Para 3 mean?
A. Let go of. B. Taken control of.
C. Treated differently. D. Looked after kindly.
26. What do you think of Sister Zeph?
A. Emotional and creative. B. Considerate and determined.
C. Carefree and independent. D. Open-minded and humorous.
27. What may the author convey according to the passage?
A. Love is universal and vital. B. Hard work pays off in no time.
C. Education is tough and demanding. D. A small change makes a big difference.
C
“Is the glass half empty or half full?” This old English saying has long been used to tell a pessimist from an optimist. For most young people today, the answer is usually “half full”, because we have been taught that a positive attitude towards life is one of the primary keys to success.
However, is this necessarily a good thing? Recent studies indicate that it all depends. There is such a thing as too much positivity. It happens when someone remains in a happy and positive state and ignores any bad and negative emotions across all situations. But as a matter of fact, it is normal for us to experience any emotions. The death of a pet or loved one, a low score on a test, or a mountain of new homework should lead to emotions such as sadness, frustration and anger. If we hide these emotions just because we want to look optimistic in front of our friends and family, they can build up inside of us and end up erupting in unexpected ways. There is new evidence to suggest that many of these overly positive people are at a risk of developing drug or alcohol addictions as well as other psychological problems.
Aside from the personal emotional impacts, this attitude can also have a negative effect on the people around you. Imagine having had a bad day, and wanting to talk about it with your friend. However, instead of listening to your problems and sympathizing with you, they simply told you to “be positive” and give you the impression that your problems are being completely ignored. Just take everything as it comes and express how you really feel. This makes you human, and your true friends will always stick by you.
So my simple advice to you is to do what gives you the best “attitude” in life, whatever for you that might be. Regardless of whether a glass is half-empty or half-full, it nonetheless still has space to fill.
28. Why does the writer mention the glass at the beginning of the text?
A. To give some evidence. B. To introduce the topic.
C. To present an argument. D. To explain his ideas.
29. What is the writer’s attitude to the person who remains positive across all situations?
A. Negative. B. Supportive. C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.
30. What is the main idea of paragraph 3?
A. The cause of overly positivity.
B. The prevention of overly positivity.
C. The bad effect of overly positivity on others.
D. The bad impacts of overly positivity on personal emotion.
31. Which of the following may the writer agree with?
A. Positivity is the key to success.
B. We needn’t stay positive all the time.
C. There isn’t such a thing as overly positive.
D. Positivity always does a harm effect to our lives.
D
From the loss of wildlife to rising sea levels, we’re all well aware of the problems that climate change could cause.
But while it may seem like such issues won’t affect most of us directly, it looks like future generations could grow up without something that many of us now take for granted: chocolate.
According to an essay published by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, changes to the climate in the regions that produce cacao--the plant from which chocolate is produced--may mean that it will soon become extinct.
Most of the world’s cacao grows in countries close to the equator (赤道), with over half of it growing in the African nations of Ghana and Ivory Coast. It’s predicted that by 2050, climate change will have accelerated the rate at which temperatures in these countries rise, making it extremely difficult for cacao to grow there.
The problem doesn’t lie in increased heat, however, but in lower humidity(湿度), as it’s believed that rainfall will stay at the same level if the temperature rises.
“In other words, as higher temperatures squeeze more water out of soil and plants, it’s unlikely that rainfall will increase enough to offset the moisture (水分) loss, “ Michon Scott, the essay’s author, wrote.
To help fight this problem, researchers from Berkeley University in the US are working on changing the DNA of cacao plants to allow them to survive in dryer conditions by using gene editing technology, according to US News. In the meantime, US company Mars, one of the world’s biggest manufacturers of chocolate products, announced in January that it would spend $1 billion to help reduce the effects of climate change.
“This is a world issue and it requires everyone to work together,” Mars spokesperson Barry Parkin told Business Insider.
The message here is that if we all do our part, we may be able to prevent some of the worst impacts of climate change. Or if we’re unlucky, chocolate will become a thing of the past.
32. What could make it hard for cacao to grow around the equator in the future?
A. the higher temperatures there B. the higher humidity there
C. the increase in rainfall there D. the moisture loss in the soil there
33. What did Barry Parkin suggest?
A. thousand-mile journey begins with the first step. B. Always prepare for a rainy day.
C. United we stand; divided we fall. D. Wish for the best; prepare for the worst.
34. What can we learn from the passage?
A. UC Berkeley is trying to find a substitute for cacao.
B. Cacao can only be found in most African countries.
C. Climate changes can be controlled if we are lucky.
D. Mars will financially support the fight against climate changes.
35. What may be the best title of this text?
A. Chocolate could become history B. Work together to fight climate change
C. How do we grow cacao in the future? D. The history of chocolate.

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
At San Fernando Elementary School in Los Angeles, Mrs. Levinson always did something special for her students during the holiday season. This tradition started with Jessie the Elf, a festive doll that brought small gifts to brighten people’s lives amid hardships. Mrs. Levinson knew that many of her students came from low-income families, and some of them even experienced homelessness, hunger, or abuse. She wanted to give them a sense of joy and hope, and show them that someone cared for them. Every morning, the students would find Jessie in a different spot in the classroom, holding a new surprise for them. Sometimes it was a candy cane, sometimes it was a pencil, and sometimes it was a handwritten note of encouragement. The students loved Jessie and looked forward to seeing what she had for them each day.
However, an unexpected financial crisis severely impacted Mrs. Levinson’s own resources. Her husband lost his job, and they had to pay for their daughter’s college tuition. Should she continue buying gifts for the kids or pay her heavy mortgage (抵押贷款)? After a brief inner conflict, she chose to sacrifice her own needs and continued the classroom tradition, hoping that the gifts would bring some joy and hope to the kids who had so little.
Yet, what happened afterwards made her choice even more challenging. Transitioning to online classes, she discovered a heartbreaking fact: many students couldn’t attend online classes due to the inability to afford household Internet. She felt helpless and frustrated, knowing that they were missing out on their education and their connection with their classmates and teachers. She also worried about their mental health and well-being.
Just as Mrs. Levinson felt sad, she had a good idea. She decided to launch a fundraising campaign (筹款活动) on the Nextdoor App, urging neighbors to help students by covering their Internet costs. She explained the situation and asked for donations of any amount.
注意:(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
To her surprise, the campaign received much more than the target amount.

【原文】M: Miss Nancy, I’ve heard that you worked in Quebec for about four years before you came to Paris. Can you tell me something about Quebec?
W: Well, of course. The city of Quebec is the capital of Quebec Province. It lies in the northern part of Canada. It’s the ninth biggest city in the country.
M: I see. What’s the climate like there?
W: Oh, it’s very comfortable. It’s fairly warm in spring, and in summer it’s mostly bright and sunny. Fall is the most beautiful season. It’s the time to see red maple leaves. Winter in Quebec is a bit long, usually lasting about six months. In winter you can see snow everywhere, and the whole world turns white.
M: I can imagine that. Now please tell me something about the people there.
W: The people in the city are mostly French-Canadians, and about 95% of them only speak French. They enjoy a better life and live longer than most people in other parts of the world.
M: Wow, it’s such a good place. You must miss it very much, don’t you?
W: Yes, but not very often. I was born in New York, and was also brought up there, so I think it’s the best place to live and work.

25. What does the underlined word “pampered” in Para 3 mean?
A. Let go of. B. Taken control of.

【答案】28. B 29. A 30. C 31. B

“This is a world issue, and it requires everyone to work together,” Mars spokesperson Barry Parkin told Business Insider.
【答案】32. D 33. C 34. D 35. A
【解析】
【分析】本文是一篇说明文,主要讲的是气候变化可能导致可可树的灭绝,巧克力可能会成为历史。
【32题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“The problem doesn’t lie in increased heat, however, but in lower humidity, as it’s believed that rainfall will stay at the same level if the temperature rises.(然而,问题并不在于气温升高,而在于湿度较低,因为据信,如果气温升高,降雨量将保持在同一水平。)”和第六段的““In other words, as higher temperatures squeeze more water out of soil and plants, it’s unlikely that rainfall will increase enough to offset the moisture loss, “ Michon Scott, the essay’s author, wrote.(“换句话说,随着高温从土壤和植物中挤出更多的水分,降雨量不太可能增加到足以抵消水分流失的程度,”该论文的作者米琼·斯科特(Michon Scott)写道。)”可知,让可可豆在未来难以在赤道附近生长的原因是那里土壤中的水分流失,故选D。
【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段的“The message here is that if we all do our part, we may be able to prevent some of the worst impacts of climate change. Or if we’re unlucky, chocolate will become a thing of the past.(这里传递的信息是,如果我们都尽自己的一份力量,我们也许能够阻止气候变化的一些最糟糕的影响。如果我们运气不好,巧克力就会成为过去式。)”可知,巴里·帕金的建议是我们大家要一起努力,也就是“合则存,分则亡”,故选C。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第三段的“In the meantime, US company Mars, one of the world’s biggest manufacturers of chocolate products, announced in January that it would spend $1 billion to help reduce the effects of climate change.(与此同时,全球最大的巧克力产品制造商之一美国玛氏公司于今年1月宣布,将斥资10亿美元帮助减少气候变化的影响。)”可知,Mars将在财政上支持对抗气候变化。故选D。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第三段“According to an essay published by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, changes to the climate in the regions that produce cacao--the plant from which chocolate is produced--may mean that it will soon become extinct.(根据美国国家海洋和大气管理局发表的一篇文章,生产可可(巧克力的原料)的地区的气候变化可能意味着可可很快会灭绝。)”

本段“While you may practice delivering your story for many times, try not to deliver your story as if you were reading off the paper like a robot. Be cautious of the way you speak, make your delivery seem authentic (真实的) and add some personal touches to it. Instead of trying to be perfect, give yourself some room to improvise (即兴创作).(虽然你可能会多次练习讲述你的故事,但尽量不要像机器人一样读报纸一样讲述你的故事。注意你说话的方式,让你的表达看起来真实,并加入一些个人风格。不要试图做到完美,给自己一些即兴发挥的空间。)”说你在讲述故事时不要像机器人一样照着纸念,而是要注意自己的说话方式,使自己的表达更加真实。分析选项可知,A项“Be mindful of your speech.(注意你的讲话。)”提到要谨慎选择说话方式,符合下文强调的“避免机械化和不真实的表达”。故选A。
【39题详解】
根据上文中的“As your story develops, make changes to your voice so that the audience can get engaged. (随着故事的发展,改变你的声音,这样观众就能投入其中。)”可知,本段建议随着故事的发展来改变你的声音,这样听众就能沉浸其中。分析选项可知,D项“Quicken your pace to describe action scenes.(描述动作场面时要加快语速。)”符合语境,与空后一句都是对上文的举例说明。D项中的Quicken与下文中的slow形成对比。故选D。

第二节 (满分25分)
注意:(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

She was overjoyed and grateful, and so were her students. They were able to restart their online classes and see Jessie again. They thanked Mrs. Levinson and their generous neighbors for making their holiday season brighter.
Paragraph 2:
As the story spread throughout the community, more and more people were touched by Mrs. Levinson’s kindness and generosity. They wanted to show their appreciation and support for her and her students. Some of them sent her thank-you cards and messages, some of them donated more money and resources, and some of them even offered to volunteer as tutors for the kids. Mrs. Levinson was amazed by the outpouring of love and goodwill from the community. She felt that she had not only helped her students, but also inspired others to help as well.
