Spring Festival couplets(春联),also known as door couplets, are a symbol of Chinese culture. Putting up Spring Festival couplets is also an important part of Chinese New Year culture. This tradition is widely kept both in modern cities and in the countryside of China.
Spring couplets come from Taofu, an inscription(碑文)on boards made from peach trees in the Zhou Dynasty. People believed that peach trees could drive away bad things, so they hung peach boards in front of the doors. Spring couplets didn't take shape until the wooden boards were taken place by red paper in the Song Dynasty. During the Song Dynasty, people paid more attention to bright wishes for the future.
Then in the Ming Dynasty, the spring couplets had nothing to do with Taofu. They became a kind of decoration(装饰)and were popular all over the country. Zhu Yuanzhang, the first emperor of the Ming Dynasty, had a special love for writing Spring Festival couplets. In order to spread this cultural activity, he ordered all people to put up couplets during the Chinese New Year. This tradition still continues today. In the Qing Dynasty, more emperors were interested in Spring Festival couplets. They spread the tradition of putting up couplets. Later, the tradition spread to many other countries.
However, do you know how to put up couplets? It is not a simple job. There are rules for both the time and the right order. Usually, they should be put up before New Year's Eve, and the best time is from 1 p. m. to 3 p.m.on the 29th of the lunar(农历)December.
