A travel plan to Xi' an
Dear Xiao Li,
My time here in China is going well. I love my new school and classmates. Over the October holiday, my parents and I are planning to go to Xi' an to see the Terracotta Army. I've heard that it is an amazing sight, and I can't wait to go. To me, the story of the Terracotta Army is almost incredible(难以置信的). It's amazing that there are more than 8,000 statues(雕像), and no one in modern times knew about them until the 1970s.
We're also planning to visit several other places in Xi’an. My dad and I are both looking forward to the Shaanxi History Museum because my dad loves history and I have heard that this museum is known as a “Chinese treasure house”! We're also going to the Xi’an City Wall and a few other famous sights.
We will take the train, leaving the day before the October holiday begins. We’ll arrive at 9:30 a. m. and will start to go sightseeing right away. So I hope we can sleep well on the train!
I guess that's all for now! I' ll write again soon and send photos! Do you have any plans for the coming holiday? Hope to hear from you soon.
Your friend,
Richard

Chinese is getting more and more popular, so the UK government plans to invest(投资) 10 million pounds to help more kids learn Chinese. Do you think it is necessary for UK pupils to learn Chinese?
Seneca (Canada)
I have studied French for 2 years in high school, and German for 4 years in college andI got good marks. I have studied Chinese for about 4 months before moving to China. For any language, if you don't use it, it will be easy to lose it. I' ve forgotten the French I learned except for a few phrases. I speak Chinese every day. My writing, reading and listening are quite good, but far from fluent. I think it's necessary to learn Chinese.
Tony (the UK)
Learning any language can be valuable, but it is not suitable for everyone. Chinese is a difficult language to learn, and teachers in the UK are not good at teaching foreign languages. However, China is a big and developing market for English business people. For them, Chinese is worth learning.
Bill (the US)

Yuhang in Hangzhou is known for making oil paper umbrellas for over230 years. But in the 1970s, it was out of production as steel-ribbed ( 钢骨的) umbrellas became more popular.
In 2015, Liu Weixue gave up a well-paid job as a designer to learn the traditional art of making Yuhang oil paper umbrellas from his grandfather. “I fell in love with the art at a very young age. I want to bring it to life,” Liu said.“ When it rains, someone uses the umbrella— that’s what I want to see.”
There are more than 70 steps, including making bamboo ribs (竹伞骨) and pasting(糊) papers. It takes at least a week to make an umbrella. After mastering the skills, Liu opened a studio and worked with local umbrella- making masters.封
Liu improved the umbrellas to win the hearts of young people. As the traditional paper breaks easily, he used a thicker paper. In a test, his umbrellas were opened and closed1,000 times without breaking. He uses a lighter kind of bamboo to make the ribs, so the umbrellas weigh less. As young people like hand- painted pictures, he invites painters to draw patterns (图案) on the umbrella cover.
Since online shopping is popular, Liu opened an online shop to sell umbrellas. It sells well but to ensure quality, his studio makes only 1,000 umbrellas each year.
Liu hopes the art will be passed on. He goes to local schools to teach students and shows up at events in different places to promote the art.
( )13. Why did Liu Weixue learn to make Yuhang oil paper umbrellas?
A. Because he liked the art form.
A. Because he had no other choice.

D. Because he learned how to make them at school.
( )14. To sell his umbrellas to young people, Liu .
a. makes the umbrellas stronger
b. makes the umbrellas lighter
c. sells the umbrellas at a lower price
d. adds hand- painted pictures to the umbrella covers
A. abc B. abd C. acd D. bcd
( )15. What can we know from this text?
A. Liu hopes to make more umbrellas each year.
B. Oil paper umbrellas will replace modern umbrellas.
C. Oil paper umbrellas have been out of style these days.
D. Liu will teach more people how to make umbrellas.
( )16. In which part of the newspaper can we read the text?
