Over the summer I moved from Texas to Missouri. This was my second year of high school, but my first year of school in Missouri. I was really nervous about starting a new school and having people like me. I decided that I would be much happier in a new school if I made friends that were so-called “popular”. Getting in with the right group of people would make my life a whole lot better. I bought a new outfit so the first day would be perfect. On the first day of school, scared, yet eager to begin my new life, I walked up the stairs. My first class was geometry, but where was that? I was standing in the hall looking confused, when a short, blond girl wearing glasses came up and asked, “Are you new? You look lost. Do you want me to help you find your class? My name is Diane. What’s yours?” Even though she seemed a bit strange, definitely not the kind of person I wanted to be associated with, I decided to answer her anyway. I was, after all, lost. After exchanging names, I followed her up the stairs and down a hallway on the right. When we reached my room she said, “Well, here you are. It was nice meeting you. I hope I see you again and your day goes all right.” I said a quick thank-you and waved good-bye. Once inside the classroom, I saw one big group of people huddled around someone who seemed to be telling some sort of story. I walked over and got close enough to overhear. All eyes were glued to the guy in the middle of the circle. I decided that this guy was popular. A few minutes later the teacher told everyone to go find a seat and get ready for the class. I managed to get one right next to the guy. I said, “Hi, my name is April and I’m new here.” He said coldly, “Hi, I’m Johnny.” That class dragged on and on. Finally, the bell rang. I turned to him and asked, “I’m not sure where my next class is, could you help me find it?” He looked at me and then said a quick no, turned back to his friends, and walked out of the classroom. As they were walking out, I heard they were all laughing at me. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Before I was ready to go home, I heard a familiar voice calling my name. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 文章大意 作者从德克萨斯州搬到密苏里州,在新高中的第一天,渴望结交 “受欢迎” 的朋友让生活更好。 1. True friendship is not measured by popularity but by the kindness and care shown in the simplest of acts. 2. In the journey of life, we often overlook the real gems of friendship in pursuit of false notions of popularity, only to realize that true friends are those who reach out when we need them the most. 3. The experience taught me that being popular doesn't mean having a lot of followers, but having someone who truly cares and is there for you in the toughest of times. 4. We should value the people who offer genuine help and kindness, rather than chasing after the illusion of popularity, for it is these real connections that enrich our lives. 5. Through this encounter, I learned that the true meaning of friendship lies not in the glamour of being with the "in-crowd" but in the warmth and support of those who show up when you least expect them to. Paragraph 1: As they were walking out, I heard they were all laughing at me. I felt my face flush with embarrassment and a sharp pain of disappointment stabbed my heart. I stood there for a moment, frozen, not knowing what to do. Then, I took a deep breath and walked away alone. The rest of the day was a struggle as I tried to find my classes by myself, constantly reminded of that humiliating moment. I began to question my initial goal of seeking popularity and realized that it might not be as important as I thought. Paragraph 2: Before I was ready to go home, I heard a familiar voice calling my name. It was Diane. She came up to me with a big smile and asked how my day was going. I hesitated for a moment and then told her everything. She listened patiently and said, “Don’t worry about them. True friends are not those who laugh at you but those who are there when you need them.” I looked at her and felt a wave of gratitude. We walked together and talked more. That moment, I understood that true friendship was not about being popular but about having someone like Diane who cared. From then on, I started to value real connections and no longer chased after the false idea of popularity. Paragraph 1: As they were walking out, I heard they were all laughing at me. My heart sank and I felt a sense of loneliness and regret. I walked through the halls with my head down, determined to figure things out on my own. I avoided looking at anyone, afraid of meeting more ridicule. But with each passing class, I became more resilient. I realized that I couldn't base my happiness on the acceptance of those who didn't truly care about me. Paragraph 2: Before I was ready to go home, I heard a familiar voice calling my name. I turned around and saw Diane. She had a concerned look on her face. She asked if I was okay and offered to walk with me to the bus stop. As we walked, I told her about my experience with Johnny and how I felt. She said, “You know, popularity doesn't always mean true friendship. Sometimes the people we overlook are the ones who can give us the real friendship we need.” I nodded, understanding the truth in her words. That day, I learned that the value of a friend lies in their kindness and not in their popularity. I was grateful to have met Diane and decided to cherish the friendship she offered. As they were walking out, I heard they were all laughing at me. Their shrill laughing let me blush with shame. I felt so embarrassed that I couldn’t do anything but sit there, keeping my body unmoved and holding back my tears. What I wanted to do is just to make friends with them. I couldn’t figure out why they laughed at me. But one thing was certain, that is, I must removed myself from their presence. Therefore, I wasn’t ready to leave until they walked far away. Before I was ready to go home, I heard a familiar voice calling my name. I felt very strange since I was new here without making any friends. Turning around, I saw Diane who came up to me with a warm smile on her face. She said she would walk together with me. What a kind and friendly girl she was, I thought. I was deeply moved so that I left all my embarrassment and sadness behind. On our way home, we talked a lot and I was surprised to find we had a lot in common. I also realized the true meaning of a friend.
