Where to Put Your Trust
I’ll always remember that day, when I was so surprised by all the strange looks everyone was giving me. And I couldn’t believe I would lose the friendship of the person I trusted the most.
Five years back, Sally was the new kid in class. I don’t know what it was, but something unique about her drew me to her. She was the most friendly person I knew.We started as classmates, but after a few months, we were like best friends. So, I never expected her to hurt me in such a big way.
I don’t know what made me tell Sally about my personal life. She made the matter bigger than it was, adding her own spin(倾向性描述)on it and telling everyone at school. It was like someone had stabbed(刺)me in the back. After she gave away my secrets, everyone at school started laughing at me, looking at me and giggling(咯咯地笑)whenever I passed by. After this terrible situation, I changed to a new school. Sally called me many times, but I didn’t answer. My heart was broken.
I tried hard to heal(愈合)from the scars she left on my heart. I started a new life. After five years, my life went back to the way it was, with new friends. But one day, I met Anna at the market. She was my classmate from third grade. She told me that Sally wasn’t the one who brought my secrets to light. Mary was. Mary was our school’s big mouth who always wanted to stick her nose into other people’s business.
I was all at sea and regretted a lot. I wished I could have asked Sally about this. I wished I could go back in time and fix my mistakes. From that, I learned a life lesson that we should trust those we love because one little mistake could really damage(破坏)our lives.

Children can spend hours a day looking at computer screens and other digital devices. Some eye doctors say all that screen time has led to an increase in “computer vision syndrome(电脑视力综合征)”.
Nathan Bonilla-Warford is an eye doctor in Tampa, Florida, he has seen an increase in problems in children. “A lot more children who are coming into the office either because their parents have noticed that they have headaches or red or watery eyes or discomfort, their near-sightedness, appears to be increasing at a fast rate and they’re worried,” he says.
Dr. Bonilla-Warford says part of the problem is that children may be more likely to pay no attention to the early warning signs than adults. “Even if their eyes start to feel uncomfortable or they start to get a headache, they’re less likely to tell their parents, because they don’t want to have the game or the computer or whatever taken away,” he explains.
He says another part of the problem is that people blink less often when they use digital devices. “The average person who uses a computer or an electronic device blinks about a third as much as we normally do in everyday life. And so that can result in the front part of the eye drying and not staying wet and protected like normal.”
Eye doctors offer suggestions like the following which is known as the 20/20/20 rule. That means every twenty minutes look away twenty feet or more for at least twenty seconds from whatever device you’re using.
Other suggestions include putting more distance between you and the device and using good lighting. Of course, another way to avoid eye tiredness is to spend less time looking at screens. Many experts say children should spend no more than two hours a day using digital devices—with no screen time for children under two.
While more and more eye doctors have noticed an increase in problems in children. Dr. David Hunter says he has also seen an increase in his practice. “While it is possible to develop tired looking at various screens for a long period of time, researchers still need to find the exact cause in order to give children more effective suggestions.”
27.Why don’t some children tell their parents even if their eyes feel uncomfortable?
A.Because their parents are always busy with their work.
B.Because they consider it normal to feel uncomfortable.
C.Because they don’t want to lose their freedom to use computers.
D.Because they don’t think their parents can deal with it properly.
28.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Children under two can watch TV for less than two hours a day.
B.Dr. Bonilla-Warford thinks using computers causes nearsightedness.
C.Dr. David Hunter says headache causes an increase in eye problems.
D.People keep their eyes protected against drying by blinking normally.
29.What can be the best title for the passage?
A.Looking at Screen: Two Hours or More
B.How Can Children Use Their Eyes Properly
C.How Much Screen Time Is Too Much for Children
D.Using Digital Devices: Advantages and Disadvantages
D
When someone has a sharply different viewpoint from our own, we naturally choose two common ways, either avoiding a conversation with that person or trying to convince(说服) them that they are wrong. Research shows there is another way: using receptive (接纳性的) language, showing that we are truly interested in a new point of view.
Many of us try to avoid disputed (有争议的) discussions. We prefer to talk with someone with similar opinions. This happens because we usually think that talking to someone who has disagreements will be more unpleasant than it actually is. When we do have to talk with people holding different views, we typically try to convince them to give up their belief because we think we are right and try to “win” the argument. And the other side is likely to think the same way, which leads to even more difficult problems to work through.
A more effective method is being conversationally receptive. Research shows that when we appear receptive to others’ different views, our arguments sound more convincing. Receptive language can also make those with whom we disagree more receptive in return. It makes us more likable, and others more interested in partnering with us.
Researchers suggested three tips that can help us improve conversational receptiveness in even the most heated disagreements.
Recognize (承认) the other person’s point of view. Say “I understand that ...” or “I believe what you’re saying is ...” to show that you take an active part in the conversation and find value and even trust in their points.
Hedge your statements. When we talk, we usually hold the opinion that we should be strong and confident and express our views in a direct, forceful way. But if we show that we are not so sure about our belief, our views will be likely to be better received.
Express your arguments in an acceptable way. You might say, “Let’s consider the possible benefits of having fewer people working on the project” rather than “We should not add more people to the project.” The second sentence sounds unpleasant, showing that the speaker is not open to the possibility of further discussion.
By following these tips in our communication, we’ll be more likely to have an effective conversation and bridge the differences.
30.What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.Why people use two common ways when facing disagreements.
B.How people communicate to deal with difficult problems.
C.How people convince others to give up their belief.
D.Why people dislike those with different opinions.
31.According to the passage, being conversationally receptive can lead to _________.
A.productive communication B.creative statements
C.increased confidence D.divided opinions
32.The words “hedge your statements” in Paragraph 6 probably mean “_________”.
A.explain your reasons clearly
B.raise your questions politely
C.voice your ideas less forcefully
D.express your excuses more directly
33.What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A.To stress the importance of productive communication.
B.To introduce a better way to deal with disagreements.
C.To explain the reasons for using receptive language.
D.To provide three effective tips to win an argument.

In this case, I started with a goal to run across Kyrgyzstan. No one had ever done it before, and everyone told me it couldn’t be done. But I went, and I did it, And on that trip, I became the best of myself but finishing a big project like that left a hole, and I felt pretty depressed(沮丧的) afterward. So I decided to just keep going.” She said.
She also said that during the journey, so many things happened—some are scary, some are beautiful. We always have to set a record or we’ve always got to be the best. A thousand people could run across these mountains and come back with a thousand different stories.
“So many of us grow up in environments where we’re always looked after. Each solo(单独的) trip I took was a revelation(启示) of my abilities. I’ve gotten myself into some bad situations and I’ve had to think creatively to get myself out. If I had never put myself through that, I might never have become a truly one who really backs herself when things get bad.” She also said.

五、参考范文:
Dear Peter,
I’m glad to receive your email. Two years ago, I had problems with listening. When people talked with me, I couldn’t understand them. I was not good at reading and writing, either.
I talked about these problems with my English teacher, and she gave me some advice. First, it is important to practice as much as possible. Second, I need to be brave and should not be afraid of making mistakes. Third, keeping a diary is a good way to improve writing. So I often listen to the tape. I take part in the English corner and talk with foreigners. I do more reading after class. When I read, I often guess the meanings of the new words and try to get the main idea of the article.
Thanks for my teacher’s advice, my English is improving and I have made great progress now. From this experience, I think the secret to learning English lies in hard work and strong belief in yourself, and asking your teacher or friends for help is also the key to helping you solve problems.
So be confident and try your best, each of us can make a difference. I hope these tips can help you, and I am sure you will make a difference.
Yours,
Li Hua
