Last fall, I signed up for a four-month program for teenagers in Mountain High School. I went there because hikes, art, and fields of corn sounded fun to me.
When I set out in August, I hugged my parents’ goodbye. “See you in December!” I said.
My parents nodded. They were worried — I could tell. It was because they knew me so well. They knew that I had trouble reaching out. They knew that I was shy and I made friends slowly.
My dad looked worriedly at me and my mom’s voice shook as she said, “You’re going to be just fine, baby girl.”
The first two weeks were difficult. I made half-hearted small talks at meals, and I cried in the shower. For me, being around people all the time was more tiring than a five-mile race. I was out of my comfort zone, and I couldn’t go back.
One day during the third week, I spent two hours collecting corn with one of my classmates. My feelings matched the darkening sky. I wanted to be alone. After a while, she asked, “Where are you from again?” Half an hour passed, “How many brothers or sisters do you have?”
Finally, my classmate said the three magic words in the English language: I LOVE READING. Soon I found myself talking about books I enjoyed reading. I started to relax. A few bricks (砖) fell down from my wall of shyness.
A few more fell. I started to reach out. The bricks fell and fell and fell. By the end of the program, I was totally different. I ran through the dining hall, I jumped on the chairs, I sang, and I made friends.
That was the wonderful thing about a comfort zone: once you are out of it, it doesn’t take long to find a new normal. When I arrived, people tired me. When I left, I couldn’t stand leaving them.
24.The writer’s parents worried about her because ________.
A.she disliked the program B.she was always a shy girl
C.she feared to leave home D.she was a very slow reader.
25.The writer started to relax after ________.

B.running a hard race
C.talking about books
D.crying in the shower
26.From her experience, the writer learned about ________.
A.the benefits of living by oneself
B.the joy of leaving a comfort zone
C.the value of having a new hobby
D.the importance of making friends

Sometimes it seems that time is flying. Perhaps it doesn’t need to feel this way. Our experience of time can be possibly changed. By understanding the psychological (心理学的) processes behind our different experiences of time, we might be able to slow down time a little.
One basic law of psychological time is that time seems to slow down when we’re exposed(接触) to new environments and experiences. The law is caused by the relationship between our experience of time and the amount of information our minds process. The more information our minds take in, the slower time seems to pass.
It follows, then, that we have different experiences of time in different situations. In some situations, our life is full of new experiences. Our minds process a lot of information and time seems to slow down. In other situations, we have fewer new experiences and the world around us becomes more and more familiar(熟悉的). We become insensitive to our experience, which means we process less information, and time seems to speed up.
How can we slow down time? Here are two suggestions.
Firstly, since we know that familiarity makes time pass faster, we can expose ourselves to as many new experiences as possible. We can give ourselves new challenges, meet new people, and expose our minds to new information, hobbies and skills. This will increase the amount of information our minds process and expand (增加) our experience of time.
Secondly, and perhaps most effectively, we can give our whole attention to an experience-to what we are seeing, feeling, tasting, smelling or hearing. This means living through our senses rather than through our thoughts. For example, on the way home, focus your attention outside of yourself, instead of thinking about the problems you have to deal with. Look at the sky, or at the buildings you pass, traveling among them. This open attitude to your experiences helps take in more information and also has a time-expanding effect.
To a certain degree, we can understand and control our experience of time passing. It’s possible for us to slow down time by expanding our experience of time.
27.According to the writer, we can expand our experience of time by .
A.going to bed on time B.traveling to new places
C.having dinner as usual D.printing the same materials
28.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Being familiar with the world around helps us get more information.
B.Understanding psychological time makes life pass more quickly.
C.We can take in more information by living through our senses.
D.We should build a stronger relationship between time and us.
29.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A.Slow Down Time B.Only Time Will Tell
C.Race Against Time D.Time Will Not Come Twice
D
When we think of communication, we usually think not of touch but of speech. This is because language itself happens primarily over the auditory (听力的,听觉的) channel. Since sound travels more than four times faster in water (1,480 meters per second) than in air (343 meters per second), it’s no surprise that a huge number of animals in the ocean also use sound as an efficient means of communication. The low-frequency sounds produced by larger whales can travel tens of thousands of miles underwater. Many species (物种) of fish use sound for communication.
The ocean is full of animals using the auditory channel for communication, but this may be changing. Because of human-made noise, the ocean sounds very different than it did millions of years ago. In our searching for both understanding and having communication with ocean species, we have become our own worst enemy. Ship noise and wind farms, all these activities are creating the loud and unpleasant sound in the ocean. Too much noise makes it difficult for fish to avoid enemies or for whales to hear those low-frequency calls as they now must compete with the noise of shipping traffic.
Jason Bruck and other researchers have focused their attention on the dolphins communication and the problem of ocean noise. They are looking at how even seemingly minimal (极小的) amounts of background noise might make it difficult not only for dolphins to communicate with each other but also to pay long enough attention to learning new skills.
Paige Stevens is studying the ways in which noise affects dolphins to learn living abilities. Just as we see in humans, background noise may make it difficult for dolphins to focus on the task at hand. Stevens’ research could show that it’s getting so loud in the ocean that dolphins might be losing their abilities to think clearly enough to live a normal life.
Humans feel a strong pull to communicate with ocean animals. And we have enough in common with most species in terms of (就……而言) shared communication channels to make this possible, even if it’s just a soft touch. It’s good to want to have communication with our favorite ocean species, but unless we find a way to turn down the volume, we won’t ever hear what they might want to tell us.
30.What do you know about the sound?
A.Sound travels faster in air than in water.
B.There is little loud sound in the deep ocean.
C.Some ocean animals use sound to communicate.
D.Human-made noise is good for some of the ocean animals.
31.Paige Stevens probably agrees that __________.
A.animals like using language to communicate
B.people make some ocean noise to study the animals
C.people should stop communicating with ocean species
D.the background noise can keep dolphins from living normally
32.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A.Living in the Ocean B.From the Ocean to the Land
C.Animal Communication D.Communication in the Deep
33.What is the writer’s main purpose of writing this passage?
A.To tell us some ways to talk to animals.
B.To call on people to reduce noise in the ocean.
C.To introduce the communication way between human and ocean species.
D.To encourage people to do more researches on communication in the ocean.

Dancing Lions
This time of year, you might see lions dancing in the street as drums beat heavily. These aren’t real lions. They’re dancers in colorful clothes, celebrating a centuries-old tradition in China. People perform lion dances because they hope to bring good luck in the coming year. In many Asian countries, the new year is celebrated with the new moon that take places in late January or early February.
Usually, a lion is made up of two dancers. One dancer controls the head, the other controls the tail. There are many different kinds of lion dances. The most wonderful moment might be jumping on high poles. “I think of it as a sport,” says Anthony Huang, 15, a dancer at New York City’s Chinese Freemasons Athletic Club. Anthony has performed as the lion’s tail, but this is his first year controlling the head, which can weigh 20 pounds. The challenges are co-working with the other members in the group and following the music with the heavy head. It’s important for Anthony to pass on this historical dance form.
“I feel like this tradition really represents me,” he says.
Lion dances were once performed mostly by males. These days, the activity has become more inclusive (包容广阔的).
LionDanceMe is a group in San Francisco, California. On its dance teams, boys and girls work together. Sixteen-year-old Ananda Tang-Lee is a member. She used to see boys performing the lion dancing when she was little. She says, “But anyone can take it up. You have to believe in yourself, and have confidence that you can do it.”
During the COVID-19 pandemic (新冠肺炎疫情), LionDanceMe didn’t give up performing. Instead, the group showed its performances online. This has got the dance group even more excited to perform in person again, when it’s safe.
“It’s a different performance in real life,” says Isabella Yu, 16, who plays drums, “We bring a lot more than just the performance. We bring energy and excitement, too.”
Lion dancing will likely continue to develop gradually. But one thing that will never change is the sense of community among team members. “It’s really great, because we always have each other’s backs.” Ananda says, “We call it a family.”
34.Why do people perform lion dances?
35.What challenges does Anthony have to face when he controls the head?
36.How did LionDanceMe perform during the COVID-19 pandemic?
37.Would you like to try the lion dancing? Why or why not? (List at least 2 points)
