"Do you think I complain a lot, honey?" I asked. My husband Kevin hesitated for a few seconds before saying, "No, of course not. " But he stared out of the window while he was speaking. I realized that the family trait of complaining had taken root in me. Kevin had never mentioned it, It wasn't like him to shine a light on my faults.
I decided to keep a better watch on my tongue. Things went fine for a few weeks. I was happy with my growth. But every time the phone rang and Mom's voice was on the other end, the muscles in my neck and shoulders would get tense. After that, I'd go into Kevin's study. "How can Mom focus on the one or two things she doesn't like about every situation? And why am I the only one she feels free to unload on?" The more I bit my tongue about Mom's grumble抱怨, the louder my complaining to Kevin grew. The same old complaints appeared again.
A few days later, I received a package from my friend Torry. A bright orange notebook with one word in gold on its cover: Blessings. On the first page, Torry had written, "Jeanette, I use a notebook like this every day to write things I'm thankful for. "
The next morning, I opened the notebook and wrote the date, then two things I was grateful for. Number one, my caring husband. Number two, friends who encouraged me. Contentment filled my heart. It was not just the missing piece to help me overcome the complaining but a joyous replacement: gratitude.
Over the next few months, as I continued to list blessings each day, I noticed little things I'd ignored, How the wind made the leaves dance. How the smile of a baby lifted my heart. If you feel like you are bonded with your pet during the pandemic, you're not alone.
Cat and dog owners in the United States gradually grew closer to their pets during the difficult times. But these furry friends didn't ease their humans' overall stress or loneliness, despite their owners citing their pets' positive influences, researchers report on April 26 in PLOS ONE.
"A very clear message is that the human-animal relationship is very difficult to deal with, " says veterinary兽医的 epidemiologist Hsin-Yi Weng of Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind.
When the coronavirus outbreak began, Weng and his colleagues recognized it as an unfortunate but unique opportunity to explore the dynamics of pet ownership during a large-scale event.
The team carried out a survey around mid-2020 asking about people's stress, loneliness and relationships with their pets. Participants reflected on their feelings before the pandemic and information about the reopening and recovery periods, separately.
Analyzing responses from more than 4, 200 individuals, the team found that cat and dog owners felt they steadily bonded with their pets between the pre-pandemic and recovery periods. Spending more time at home and being isolated from other people might explain those strengthened relationships, the researchers say.
But pets' effects on mental health were a little fuzzy. Although the team expected pets to reduce stress and loneliness, people with furry companions had similar loneliness levels and sometimes even higher stress levels compared with non-pet owners.
On average, people without pets reported the lowest amounts of stress while cat owners had the highest. Affording veterinary and daily care, especially during lockdown, may have contributed to pet owners' stress, the team suggests. "There are two sides of having a pet. Weng says. While they provide companionship, pets also add extra responsibilities.
28. What does Hsin-Yi Weng think of human-animal relationship?
A. Complex.
B. Independent.
C. Unique.
D. Common.
29. How did the team get the result?
A. By analyzing the previous study.
B. By using examples.
C. By studying the collected data.
D. By listing numbers.

A. Exciting.
B. Uncontrollable.
C. Significant.
D. Confusing.
31. What probably made pet owners more stressed according to the text?
A. Being responsible for their families.
B. Paying for the everyday care for pets.
C. Being separated from other people.
D. Bringing pets to the veterinary clinic.

Air pollution is a public health crisis that affects almost every human on the planet. "It accounts for 6 million deaths worldwide annually. It's a problem that challenges all of us, " says Eva Pfannerstill, an atmospheric chemist at the University of California, Berkeley, who hopes to improve public health policies by monitoring air pollution that involves addressing the problem in Los Angeles which has the worst air quality in America.
Traditionally, air pollution emissions排放 data is collected perhaps unreliably via self-reported industry studies or by awkward, expensive and inconvenient high-tech instruments. Instead of placing these instruments on street corners, Eva's team decided to fly them over the city.
In June 2021, Eva conducted her project. She conducted 16 flights to study emissions from hundreds of gases. During the process, air is pulled into the instrument. The organic compounds are then ionized电离 and channeled into a mass spectrometer, which separates the molecules分子. Then, the scientists identify the chemical composition.
Eva wanted to focus on L. A, in particular because, during her research, she had observed that levels of air pollution had stayed unchanged in the big city for the past two decades, despite improvements in emission rules and the introduction of more electric cars.
The team believed there must be hundreds of different gas emissions sources which were not "being considered by the authorities" and set out to map them. And "we use really expensive instrumentation that can't be put at every street corner to measure pollution, " she explained, which was how "we came up with the idea of using aircrafts. "
The scientists are now using the data collected to map out the sources, types and amount of the emissions. Eventually, when the results are published early next year, Eva hopes the datasets can be used to understand which emission sources are the most damaging to human health.
32. Why was Los Angeles chosen as the subject of the project?
A. There were least deaths caused by air pollution.
B. Its public health policies never got attention.
C. Its air pollution was the most serious in the US.
D. It had introduced a lot of electric cars before.
33. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The process of the project.
B. The reasons for flying the instrument.
C. The ways to collect data.
D. The advantage of the new research.
34. Why did Eva choose aircrafts to conduct the research?
A. To overlook every corner of every street.
B. To collect more data about different gases.
C. To introduce more electric cars in a quick manner.
D. To avoid damaging their very expensive equipment.
35. What could be a suitable title for the text?
A. Air Pollution Is More and More Serious Worldwide
B. Flying Over L. A. to Study the Dirtiest Air in America
C. Human Health Is Worsened by Air Pollution Day by Day
D. Eva Being the First Woman to Study Air Pollution Emissions

When I was in middle school, my social studies teacher asked me to enter a writing contest. I said no without thinking. I did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only my second language. Writing was so difficult and painful for me that my teacher had allowed me to present my paper on the sinking of the Titanic by acting out a play, where I played all the parts. No one laughed harder than he did.
So, why did he suddenly force me to do something at which I was sure to fail? His reply: “Because I love your stories. If you're willing to apply yourself, I think you have a good shot at this. ” Encouraged by his words, I agreed to give it a try.
I chose Paul Revere's horse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith in Boston who rode a horse all night on April 18, 1775, to Lexington to warn people that British soldiers were coming. My story would come straight from the horse's mouth. Not a brilliant idea, but funny; and unlikely to be anyone else's choice.
What did the horse think, as he sped through the night? Did he get tired? Have doubts? Did he want to quit? I sympathized immediately. I got tired. I had doubts. I wanted to quit. But, like Revere's horse, I kept going. I worked hard. I checked my spelling. I asked my older sister to correct my grammar. I checked out a half-dozen books on Paul Revere from the library. I even read a few of them.
When I handed in the essay to my teacher, he read it, laughed out loud, and said, "Great. Now, write it again, " I wrote it again, and again, and again. When I finally finished it, the thought of winning had given way to the enjoyment of writing. If I didn't win, I would not care.
A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the contest, there came the news.
I went to my teacher's office after the award presentation.

(Text 1)
M: Where is Jennifer? It's 11:00 am. The meeting should have started an hour ago.
W: She called earlier. All the subway trains have been canceled, so she had to take a taxi. But it's stuck in traffic.
(Text 2)
W: Look at this house. Books are all over the floor, and dirty plates are in the sink. Do we live in a zoo?
M: I have exams soon. I don't have time to do anything but read.
(Text 3)
M: Hardly a week goes by without there being an accident on this road.
W: Cars go too fast. It's too narrow for them to travel at that speed.
M: Something should be done or someone will be badly hurt.
(Text 4)
M: Hi Louise, How is little Amy today? It's a lovely name you chose for your baby.
W: Thanks. My husband said we should call her Elizabeth, after his mother, but I thought it sounded old-fashioned.
(Text 5)
W: My laptop has stopped working. Can I access my cloud drive from your computer to print out my report?
M: Sure, but did you know you can access it through your phone?
W: You're right, Why didn't I think of that?
(Text 6)
W: What can you tell me, doctor?
M: Molly, you're a perfectly healthy young woman.
W: That's good to hear, but then why do I have this pain?
M: The main problem with your hand is caused by too much typing. You only need to stop doing that for a month or two.
(Text 7)
W: My first article has been published in a famous science magazine. They are going to send me a special copy on Friday, but it will be available in the shops three days later. I'm so glad that they have chosen it to be on the front cover.
M: Congratulations! You deserve to be recognized. I will read it on Saturday when the children are at their grandparents'. What are the contents of the article?
W: Don't you remember? It's the one about the atom.
M: Like the atom bomb?
W: No, it's about how they function. I have suggested a new theory which scientists all around the world are now accepting.
M: I know, I'm just teasing. Will I understand it? Is it very technical?
W: It is, but there are pictures to help explain it.
M: Good. I find I absorb information better if there are visual aids to help.
(Text 8)
M: Hey, Mandy. I'm ready to go out to eat. I know you're tired of Mexican food. Would you like to try that Thai restaurant tonight?
W: I'd like to, but Thai food always has so many peanuts and I'm allergic to them.
M: I wouldn't mind cooking at my house. Plus, my father can help with grilling BBQ on the grill.
W: That sounds so nice for tonight.
M: What should we take home from the supermarket?
W: Let's get some pasta. I'm eating vegetarian food only this week, so you can pick out the meat.
M: OK. Also, I'm still on my diet, so let's leave out chocolate ice cream and all dessert tonight.
W: The cafe on Main Street has special prices on bread this week, so let's pick up some takeout.
M: All right. Can you drive us there?
W: My car is at work. We can either walk or take the train.
M: The trains are too crowded at this time of the evening. It seems that there's only one choice left.
W: OK. Let's go!
(Text 9)
M: Oh, hello Susie. Hey, what's the matter? You look upset.
W: Mr. Jackson, I can't find Charlie anywhere. I haven't seen him since this morning.
M: Oh, no. That's terrible!
W: This is so unlike him. I just came home from the park and I noticed that our front gate was open.
M: Well, I did see him playing on your front grassland earlier today. I think the gate was closed then, though. Have you spoken to the other neighbors on the street? Maybe they've seen him.
W: Yeah, but nobody else has seen him. I think the mailman must have forgotten to close the gate.
M: Have you thought about creating a "missing" poster?
W: Yes, but my parents haven't gotten back from work yet. Can you help me?
M: Of course. First, you need a picture of him, so people know what he looks like. Then you should mention some other important information about him. How old is he?
W: He's 12 years old, so he isn't exactly young anymore. He has long white hair and he doesn't see very well. He also has a small brown spot on his back.
(Text 10)
W: Many things in our every day lives would have seemed like magic to previous generations. Think of that small device we all love. It lets two people on opposite sides of the globe talk to each other. Or, that box with little people living inside of it—at least our distant ancestors would guess so, if they ever saw a television. But the technologies shown as impossible in movies and books from just 40 years ago are now real. That was when the Hollywood space trend of the 1980s happened. I personally remember watching those films when they came out. Clearly, they missed the mark for what the far future will look like. It's obvious that scientific progress is moving faster today than people have ever seen.
Every generation in history has thought about his own time. A person born in 1000 AD could probably understand the world if he woke up five hundred years later. Things would be different, but they would still make sense. But can you imagine a person from 1500 AD waking up today?
The other side of this question is this: How much change is too much for us to handle? This is an issue society has never seriously thought about, since we have never seen such rapid transformation in the world. While I am at the age of sixty, I still cannot guess what the world will look like if I reach my 90s.

第一节
Dear fellow students,
The problem of "white pollution" caused by widely used plastic bags is becoming increasingly serious all over the world. And our country is one of the worst affected. As students, we should do our part to cut back on the use of plastic bags. For example, we'd better have meals in our canteen instead of bringing food to our dormitories with plastic bags. It is also important that we turn to cloth bags or shopping baskets from now on. We must act now before it is too late!
The Students' Union

Dear fellow students,
As we all know, the extensive use of plastic bags has led to a severe environmental issue known as "white pollution". Plastic bags, although convenient, take hundreds of years to decompose and pose a threat to wildlife and ecosystems.
To combat this, I propose that we start using reusable bags and reduce our reliance on plastic bags. Let's also encourage our friends and family to join us in this eco-friendly movement. Together, we can make a difference.
Thank you for your attention.
Dear students,
"White pollution" has become a critical problem due to the overuse of plastic bags, which are difficult to degrade and cause serious damage to the environment.
In response, I propose that we should avoid using disposable plastic bags and opt for cloth bags instead. Additionally, raising awareness about this issue among our peers is essential. Let's take action now to protect our planet.
Yours sincerely,

第二节
A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the contest, there came the news, I won the first place! Half shocked and half disbelieving, I, red-cheeked, was greeted by my teacher and classmates' thunderous applause. I was still in a state of pleasant disbelief when news came that an award presentation was to be held that afternoon. With a less pounding heart, I seated myself among fellow prize winners, my mind travelling back to those days when I applied myself to the creation of Revere's horse, the days of fully immersing myself to the pure joy of writing.
I went to my teacher's office after the award presentation. Handing him the certificate and trophy, I murmured, "I owed this glory to you. " Pushing back my offerings, he replied, "You don't owe me anything. It is just your own dedication, hard work, and perseverance that paid off. Plus, a new world of writing has been opened, isn't it?" Nodding my head firmly, I miraculously found my previous dislike for writing disappeared and a new pathway of being a writer stretched far under my feet, even though it was a pathway full of thorns and bumps.
