A few months ago a friend gifted me a robot sweeper that’s programmed to move around a room and clean as it goes.
When the box arrived, I was afraid the device would detect me and soak up (汲) data along with the dog hair and dust. But the instructions were easy, and I finally decided not to care.
I powered up the sweeper, watched it leave its docking station to work, and quickly fell in love with my newly shiny floors. I kept shooting its working videos. “I think you’re giving more attention to it than to us,” joked my son.
One day, I returned home and discovered that our front door had blown open and the robot rolled into the yard, trying to clean the flower beds. Even when its brushes were blocked with leaves, bugs and mud, its little wheels bravely kept turning.
The robot acted properly as it was programmed to clean “dirty” things. In a kitchen, dirt can be garden debris (碎片) such as leaves and mud. In a garden, this kind of dirt does not need to be removed. The context is important. The problem for robots is that reading this context is difficult.
This accident inspired me to think more about AI (artificial intelligence). As far as I am concerned, AI is simply well trained and reproduces what it has learned. And it is undeniable that robots are increasingly being given powerful intelligence. Some experts even predict that we will soon see not only AI-enabled robots designed to solve problems according to their instructions, but also those with the ability to judge how they should respond when they are in a different setting.
Maybe this will happen in the near future.
24. What was the author’s concern about the robot sweeper at first?
A. Its after-sales service.
B. Its working efficiency.
C. The privacy of her family.
D. The readability of its instruction.
25. How did the author feel about the robot sweeper after using it?
A. Enthusiastic.
B. Regretful.
C. Uncertain.
D. Cautious.
26. What was the root cause of the accident happening to the robot sweeper?
A. Its program went wrong.
B. It lacked critical thinking.
C. Its wheels were badly designed.
D. It failed to work on rough surfaces.
27. What does the sixth paragraph mainly talk about concerning AI?
A. The accident. B. The public’s thinking.
C. Its appeal to the author. D. The author’s opinion.
C 25. A 26. B 27. D

由文章第三段“I powered up the sweeper, watched it leave its docking station to work, and quickly fell in love with my newly shiny floors. I kept shooting its working videos. “I think you’re giving more attention to it than to us,” joked my son. (我给扫地机充上了电,看着它离开坞站开始工作,很快就爱上了我新铺的闪闪发光的地板。我一直在拍摄它的工作视频。“我觉得你把更多的注意力放在它身上,而不是我们身上,”我儿子开玩笑说。)”可知,作者使用扫地人后对扫地机器人充满热情。故选A。
由文章第五段“The robot acted properly as it was programmed to clean “dirty” things. In a kitchen, dirt can be garden debris (碎片) such as leaves and mud. In a garden, this kind of dirt does not need to be removed. The context is important. The problem for robots is that reading this context is difficult. (这个机器人的行为是正确的,因为它被编程来清理“脏”的东西。在厨房里,污垢可以是花园的碎片,比如树叶和泥土。在花园里,这种污垢不需要清除。背景很重要。机器人面临的问题是,阅读上下文是很困难的。)”可知,发生事故的根本原因是机器人缺乏批判性思维,故选B。
【27题详解】
主旨大意题。由文章第六段“This accident inspired me to think more about AI (artificial intelligence). (这次事故激发了我对AI(人工智能)的更多思考。就我而言,人工智能只是训练有素,并复制了它所学到的东西。不可否认的是,越来越多的机器人被赋予强大的智能。一些专家甚至预测,我们很快就会看到不仅能够根据指令解决问题的人工智能机器人,而且还能在不同的环境中判断自己应该如何应对。)”可知,关于人工智能,第六段主要讲作者的观点。故选D。
C
On a recent afternoon, dozens of elderly farmers were playing chess in a courtyard, a common scene at the Madongchuan Township Zhaotai Village Mutual Support Nursing Home in Yan’ an, a hilly part of Northwest China’s Shaanxi province.
There are no caregivers in sight. Instead, the residents look after one another at the self-service nursing facility, which was rebuilt from a deserted primary school in Madongchuan township. The younger ones grow vegetables in a small path of land nearby. They cook outdoors using a shared kitchen, and the food is delivered to those with mobility issues. After meals, many play chess or chat at their leisure. Local authorities also hired a retired village doctor to oversee the facility so that the residents no longer have to go to the hospital for less severe health problems such as cold and fever.
“They were enjoying themselves in the moment, and leading rather independent lives,” Zhao Liwen, secretary-general of Taikang Yicai Foundation, said of her first impression about the residents during a visit in 2019. The Beijing- based charity offered help by donating 1 million yuan to the nursing home. When she arrived, the seniors, all empty-nesters who are either childless or have children working in big cities, were wrapping dumplings together.
The scene was a sharp contrast from life in the area more than a decade ago. Village elders used to live lonely lives, scattered (分散) among the remote area and unable to access hospitals and other public services. Then in 2013, a flood washed their homes away, forcing them to move into the nursing facility.
The nursing home in Yan’ an is one of the best examples of China’s increasing efforts to take advantage of the strength of “relationship - based communities” in rural (乡村的) areas to ensure fast-graying residents are cared for. Compared with a more commercial or rule-based society in cities, rural communities in China are known to operate through personal connections and mutual trust. The self-sufficient, interdependent culture displayed by the nursing home is being supported by authorities to deal with aging in the countryside.
28. What do the elderly residents do in the nursing facility?
A. They use their separate kitchens. B. They enjoy their leisure activities.
C. They share advanced medical services. D. They employ caregivers to look after them.
29. What approach does the nursing home in Yan’ an take to deal with the rural aging?
A. Following strict regulations. B. Developing mutual cooperation.
C. Conducting commercial strategies. D. Promoting individual independence.
30. What is the author’s attitude to the self- service nursing home?
A. Objective. B. Indifferent. C. Favorable. D. Disapproving.
31. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Rural Revival: China’s Approach to Aging Population
B. Promoting traditional values: A Tale of Aging in Rural China
C. Bridging Generation Gaps: The Story of Yan’ an’s Nursing Home
D. Relationship - Based Community: A Nursing Home in Rural China
B 29. B 30. C 31. D

根据最后一段中“The nursing home in Yan’ an is one of the best examples of China’s increasing efforts to take advantage of the strength of “relationship - based communities” in rural(乡村的) areas to ensure fast-graying residents are cared for. (延安的养老院是中国不断努力利用农村地区“关系型社区”的优势来确保快速老龄化居民得到照顾的最好例子之一)”可知,作者对自助式养老院的态度是支持的,故选C项。
【31题详解】

Animals being extinct from the Earth is a serious issue. When this happens in order to use their fur or skin for fashion, it is even worse, since it’s not even for a matter of human survival. That’s why a London zoo decided to make a powerful statement at the Siamese crocodile enclosure
When visitors come in expecting to see a crocodile, they’re greeted with the handbag instead, making a very effective and powerful point about illegal wildlife trade and the harm it takes on the species involved.
A sign by the enclosure reads, “This bag used to be found swimming in slow-moving rivers and streams across Southeast Asia and Indonesia. Over the last 75 years, more than 80% of Siamese crocodiles have disappeared. Many, like this one, were hunted for their skins as part of the illegal wildlife trade.”.
Native to parts of Southeast Asia, Siamese crocodiles are critically endangered and have become virtually extinct in the wild. Due to hunting as well as habitat loss, they are now absent from nearly 99% of their original range. A huge part of the decline of population is due to humans using their wetland habitat for rice farming, and things only took a turn for the worse when large-scale hunting for their skin for commercial purposes began in the 1950s.
The particular handbag that is on display at the zoo was confiscated at a UK airport, according to Benjamin Tapley, leader of reptiles and amphibians at ZSL London Zoo.
Tapley told The Huffington Post, “We made this exhibit, within ZSL London Zoo’s Reptile House, to draw visitors’ attention to the destructive impact the Illegal Wildlife Trade (IWT) is having on species around the world. At ZSL, we are working globally with governments and local communities to protect wildlife, support law enforcement (执法) that targets illegal trade networks, empower local communities affected by IWT and reduce demand for threatened wildlife.”
32. Why does the sign say this handbag used to swim?
A. It is made of a crocodile’s skin.
B. It is made into a crocodile shape.
C. It is light enough to float on water.
D. It was kept in flowing river at first.
33. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. Wildly hunting of Siamese crocodiles.
B. Destruction of Siamese crocodiles’ habitats.
C. Commercial value of Siamese crocodiles.
D. Causes to make Siamese crocodiles endangered.
34. What does the underlined word “confiscated” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Seized. B. Sold. C. Found. D. Stolen.
35. What does Tapley’s words focus on?
A. The importance of wildlife protection.
B. The crisis endangered animals are facing.
C. The purpose to show the handbag.
D. The harm IWT caused.
A 33. D 34. A 35. C

根据文章第三段“Over the last 75 years, more than 80% of Siamese crocodiles have disappeared. Many, like this one, were hunted for their skins as part of the illegal wildlife trade. (在过去的75年里,超过80%的暹罗鳄已经消失。许多像这只这样的暹罗鳄,因为它们的皮被非法野生动物贸易的一部分而被猎杀)”可知,牌子上说这个手提包是用来游泳的,因为它是用鳄鱼皮做的。故选A。
根据文章第四段“Native to parts of Southeast Asia, Siamese crocodiles are critically endangered and have become virtually extinct in the wild. Due to hunting as well as habitat loss, they are now absent from nearly 99% of their original range. (暹罗鳄原产于东南亚部分地区,是极度濒危的动物,在野外几乎已经灭绝。由于狩猎和栖息地的丧失,它们现在近99%的原始活动范围内消失了)”可知,本段主要讲述的是使暹罗鳄濒临灭绝的原因。故选D。
【34题详解】
词义猜测题。根据划线处“The particular handbag that is on display at the zoo was (在动物园展出的那个特别的手提包)”以及“at a UK airport (在英国机场)”可知,这只在动物园展出的手提包是在英国机场查封的,划线处和A项:Seized(逮住,查封)含义接近。故选A。
根据文章最后一段“We made this exhibit, within ZSL London Zoo’s Reptile House, to draw visitors’ attention to the destructive impact the Illegal Wildlife Trade (IWT) is having on species around the world. (我们在伦敦动物园的爬行动物馆举办了这个展览,以引起游客对非法野生动物贸易(IWT)对世界各地物种的破坏性影响的关注)”可知,塔普利的话旨在引起游客对非法野生动物贸易对世界各地物种的破坏性影响的关注。由此可知,他的意思就是展示手提包的目的上。故选C。

36题详解】

【38题详解】
根据上文“While there is a trend towards bring-in and order-in food, as well as dining out, the kitchen is still a core in home life. Food & Wine cited a survey in 22 countries asking about cooking habits. (虽然有自带和点餐以及外出就餐的趋势,但厨房仍然是家庭生活的核心。Food & Wine引用了22个国家的一项调查,询问烹饪习惯。)”并结合下文“At the lower end were South Koreans, who spent just 3.7 hours per week cooking. People in India were at the top with 13.2 hours per week spent in the kitchen. (处于较低端的是韩国人,他们每周仅花3.7小时做饭。印度人则处于顶端,每周在厨房花费13.2小时。)”可知,空处出做饭所花时间有关,与B项“The global average was almost 6.5 hours. (全球平均时间接近6.5小时。)”上下文一致,符合文意,故选B项。
【39题详解】
根据上文“Regardless of its size, the kitchen is a warm and inviting place. (无论厨房大小,它都是一个温暖而诱人的地方。)”可知,厨房是温暖且吸引人的地方,与D项“It’s like gathering around a campfire in the past. (过去围着篝火聚会。)”上下文一致,符合文意,形象地说明了厨房的这种氛围。故选D项。
【40题详解】
根据上文“While technology and our expectations for the kitchen are shape-shifting in real time, the fundamentals remain the same. (虽然技术和我们对厨房的期望正在实时变化,但基本原理保持不变。)”可知,厨房的在家庭中的意义重大,与G项“The kitchen is where we connect with food and company in the soul of the home. (厨房是我们与食物和家的灵魂相处的地方。)”上下文一致,符合文意,故选G项。

第二节 (满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One spring, I helped my parents do some work in the yard at the beginning of the year. Dad was getting a flower bed ready for Mom to plant flowers in, I was picking up litter next to the fence and Mom was removing old leaves that had been in the yard since last autumn. I found a bird’s nest in the big tree behind our house. After a while, two birds flew back to the nest and I heard their calls from the nest. Dad said they were Robins (知更鸟).
I was about to climb the tree to get a good look inside the nest when Dad saw and stopped me. Dad said Robins did not want to be bothered. I nodded.
We went for quite a while and then decided to sit at the picnic table with a glass of cool water. As we sat there, I watched the Robin nest in the tree, wondering what was in it. Were there eggs? Were there baby birds? A moment later, we continued to work.
When we finished up our work outside, we went in to fix some food and ate supper, then got cleaned up, watched some TV and went to bed.
Morning came quickly with the sun shining in through the windows. While we ate breakfast, we talked about what we needed to do for the day. Since it was the weekend, we wanted to do some more work in the yard to finish the jobs we had started the day before.
We met outside in the front yard this time to do some touch-up work to the front of the house. Dad got out a big tank of white paint to take care of some chips (缺口) along the lower edge of the house next to the basement windows. It was another nice sunny day. As Dad did the painting work, Mom and I picked rocks out of the grass.

And I saw a thing in the grass under the big tree — a bird nest.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
With Dad’s help, I climbed up the tree carefully with the meet.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
And I saw a thing in the grass under the big tree — a bird nest. I quickly ran over to it and saw that it was the same nest I had seen in the tree the day before. It must have fallen out of the tree somehow. I looked around and saw the two Robins flying around, chirping loudly. They seemed distressed. I called out to my dad and mom, and they came over to see what was going on. Dad examined the nest and said it looked like it was still in good shape. He suggested that we try to put it back in the tree.
With Dad’s help, I climbed up the tree carefully with the nest. I found a sturdy branch close to where the nest had originally been and gently placed it there. The Robins watched from a distance, still chirping but not as loudly as before. Once the nest was secure, I climbed back down and we all stepped back to see what would happen. After a few minutes, the Robins cautiously approached the nest. They inspected it and then settled back in, seemingly satisfied. I felt a sense of accomplishment and relief. We continued our yard work, but I kept an eye on the Robins throughout the day. It felt good to know that we had helped them and that they could continue to care for their nest and any eggs or baby birds inside.

A few months ago, a friend gifted me a robot sweeper that’s programmed to move around a room and clean as it goes.

The nursing home in Yan’ an is one of the best examples of China’s increasing efforts to take advantage of the strength of “relationship - based communities” in rural (乡村) areas to ensure fast-graying residents are cared for.
D
