When I was in the eighth grade, my class was assigned ( 指 派 ) to be friends with
the second-grade kids. I got this little girl named Shelley. The first time I saw her, she was
silent and cold. She was small for her age, and she didn’t play with the other kids in her class.
I tried all kinds of things to get her to talk to me. I bought her toys, crayons and candies.
But try as I might, nothing worked. One time, I gave her a coloring book and said, “Shelley,
now you can color at any time.”
Shelley looked at the coloring book and then looked up at me, and finally looked away.
By that, I didn’t know how I was going to get through to the little girl, but I knew I wouldn’t
give up on her.
One Friday, I decided to tell her a story about my childhood. I told her that I felt lonely
when I was with my classmates, and how I thought only my teachers liked me. I also told her
that every day was a battle (战役 ) for me and that I fought back tears so people wouldn’t
know how much I was hurting.
She sat there just listening, trying to decide whether I was lying or not. Finally, when my
story ended, there were tears in her eyes. And then she did the unthinkable. She said, “Thank
you.” From then on, Shelley was a different little girl. She started smiling and talking with
other kids.
Looking back at this I’m in awe (惊叹 ), because all I did was to help her realize that she
wasn’t alone. I didn’t ask her to tell her story, because her story is my story.

A special birthday party was held on Thursday at Everland theme park in the Republic of
Korea(ROK) for giant panda Fu Bao, who turned 3. It might be her last birthday which is
celebrated in the country. According to an agreement between China and ROK, Fu Bao is
expected to be sent to China before reaching age 4.
The Chinese Embassy in ROK presented her two keepers with gifts, expressing gratitude
of the panda’s fans for the care which is provided by the Chinese and Korean expert teams.

with nearly 50, 000 participants, which finally yielded the name Fu Bao.
Last September, she was separated from her mother and entered sexual maturity ( 成 熟 ).

选项。
Praising Your Toddler Properly
Nothing delights a young child more than praise from his parents. But there can be right and
wrong ways of praising children. 36 There are some basic guidelines to help make your
praises to your little one loud and clear.
●Make it genuine. Well-meaning parents can repeat a mechanical “Good job!” many times a
day without even realizing it. Your child can tell whether you really mean it! 37 Look at
your child in their eyes and smile at him to be sure he can see how pleased you are.
38 Be sure the praise is about the child’s behavior and not a comment on his character.
高一英语 ( )第 6 页 共 8页
When you say “You are good/bad”, this is a reflection on your child’s character, and he may feel it
can’t be changed. Instead, say “Your behavior is good/bad” and it becomes something the child can
choose to change.
●Never make it critical. Be sure not to mix praise with criticism. For example, if your son
dresses himself, and you say, “Good job dressing yourself, but those clothes really don’t match,”
the praise is lost. 39 Just walk into school and proudly tell the teacher “Sammy dressed
himself today. Didn’t he do a great job?” and give a wink (递眼色). Your son will be proud and the
kids won’t even notice!
40 Aside from the outcome in changing behavior, there is simply no greater reward
than watching your child’s face light up when you praise him!
A.Never overpraise.
B.Never make it about his character.
C.Be sure your tone and voice communicate your delight.
D.It sends a message that the child did not do a good enough job.
E.Make it all about your child and not about your thoughts or feelings.
F.Using praise to influence your child’s behaviors can be both effective and rewarding.
G.Sometimes praise can actually do more harm than good.

Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and
she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn't help weeping sorrowfully when she thought of the
scolding from her mother. Having wandered aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry
and wished for something to eat, but it was not even possible for her, since she had nothing with her.
She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the middle-aged seller who was busy doing his
business. However, with no money in hand, she sighed and had to leave.
The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked,“Hey, girl, you want to have the
noodles?”
“ Oh, yes...but I don't have money on me..." she replied.
“That's nothing. I'll treat you today," said the man, “come in.”
The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating,
Jenny cried silently.
“What happened?” asked the man kindly.
“Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness!" said Jenny as she wiped her tears.
"Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the
house. She showed no care for me.She is so merciless compared with a stranger!"
Hearing the words, the seller smiled and said, “Girl, do you really think so? I only gave you a
bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were
a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you? Have you expressed your gratitude to her?"
Jenny sat there, speechless and numb with shock; she remembered her mother's familiar face
and weathered hands.“Why did I not think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel
indebted, but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me."
On the way home, Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness
as soon as she arrived home.
Approaching the doorway, Jenny took a deep breath._________________________________

Dear Tom,
Knowing that you are anxious about high school life, I feel sorry for you. But it is something every teenager
will go through. Here I am writing to give you some advice on how to get used to your new life.
It always comes first to manage your time wisely, which helps to balance your study and life. Making some new
friends as soon as possible is also helpful. For example, to make friends you could try to smile at everyone you meet.
Last but not least, why not do more exercise? In this way you can free yourself from the study pressure.
I hope you will benefit from my advice, and wish you will adapt to high school life soon.
Yours,
Li Hua

Approaching the doorway, Jenny took a deep breath. When she knocked at the door, she found the door was
locked and her mother was not in. Tired and sad, she sat down in front of the door. “Where could my mother be?"
she wondered.“Was she still angry with me?” Again, the scene of the quarrel appeared in her mind. She remembered
her rudeness to her mother. Realising that all the scolding from her mother was due to the fact that her mother really
cared a lot about her, she felt rather ashamed, and tears began to roll down her cheeks.
A gentle touch on her hair called her mind back. She raised her head and saw the familiar face of her
mother.“Here you come! I've been looking for you," she said, tired and relieved. Jenny couldn't help throwing herself
into her mother's arms. “Mum, I'm so sorry and thank you for all you have done for me," she expressed her sincere
apology and great gratitude. Hearing this, her mother smiled and patted her back gently.
