B6 U1 Extended reading To summarize the author’s travel experiences in Morocco and Kenya To identify the structure of the travel journal To gain a deeper insight into the meaning of the adventure To appreciate the beauties of nature in Africa To raise awareness of developing a harmonious relationship with nature Look at the title and the picture of the travel journal and discuss the following questions. 1. What do you know about Africa? Africa is the second largest continent in the world, covering about one-fifth of the total land surface of the Earth. There are 54 countries in Africa today, according to the United Nations, Algeria being the largest country in Africa. There are over one billion people living on the African continent, who have a rich diversity of languages and cultures. 2. Do you think Africa is a land full of mystery and charm? If you have the chance to visit Africa, what do you want to see and do there? Yes, definitely. With so many tribes and ethnic groups living on the continent, Africa has incredibly diverse traditions and cultures. That diversity is what makes it so attractive to people around the world. African art and music display its many traditions and social patterns. Furthermore, Africa is known for having an amazing range of wild animals, which include giraffes, lions, camels, buffalo and elephants. If I have the chance to go there, I want to see the Sahara Desert, travel down the Nile River and go on safari in Kenya. 30 June, Morocco Enter desert Sand dunes tower above us The wind was blowing grains of sand The sun was beating down hard and bright The shy was a deep shade of blue Desert camp It was getting cold Stars were shining brightly in the darkening sky 3 camels were resting on their knees and watching n. 沙丘 n. 细粒,颗粒 n. 骆驼 vt. 遍布;使布满 3 July, Kenya Our car was stuck in the mud Two local people were watching They wandered over and pushed us free We waved from the car window Hus on the plains Huts lined up facing Mount Kilimanjaro The mountain rose up over the plains Tall grasses and trees dotted the plains Giraffes were pulling leaves from the trees Elephants were eating grass n. Summarize the author’s travel experiences. In Morocco My parents and I drove all the way to the Sahara Desert. I was amazed at the wild beauty of the desert. When we arrived at our desert camp, it was getting dark and cold. I saw some camels and would go on a camel ride the next day. In Kenya On our way to Amboseli National Park, our car got completely stuck in the mud and two local people helped us. In the afternoon, we arrived at our hut. I saw the magnificent Mount Kilimanjaro, giraffes pulling leaves from the trees and elephants eating grass. As we began to unpack the car, I saw a cute monkey eating a banana, but I soon realized it was my banana! n. 决心,决定 Read the first journal entry in detail and answer the following questions. 1) What first came into sight when the author and his parents entered the Sahara Desert? What resolution did he make? Unending sand dunes. He made a resolution to respect and protect the unique landscape because it was very fragile. 2) What left a deep impression on the author? He was deeply impressed with the sand dunes, the sun, the sky and stars. Read the second journal entry in detail and answer the following questions. 1) What happened to them when they were very near to their rest camp in Amboseli National Park? Why did the author's father smile weakly? Their car got completely stuck in the mud and two locals pushed them free. The author's father smiled weakly, because he felt sorry for the trouble he brought to the two local people. 2) What personalities did the two local people show? They were simple, helpful and warm-hearted. At first, they were happy to stand by and watch the author and his parents. But when the local people realized their helplessness, they offered help. 3) What on the plains impressed the author most? Mount Kilimanjaro, tall grasses and trees, giraffes and elephants. Describe the author's interaction with the animals and infer what kind of person he is. The author talked with the camels and a small grey monkey in the way he talked with friends. He must love animals very much. Maybe he wants to convey to us that human beings should live in harmony with animals on the Earth. My most memorable travel experience is my summer holiday visit to Chaka Salt Lake, the "Mirror of the Sky". The trip started off with a three-hour flight from Nanjing to Xining and ended with a four-hour train ride to the lake. My eyes were not prepared for the breathtaking natural beauty of the scenic area—giant salt sculptures scattered along the lakeside. I was truly in awe of the artworks Mother Nature created with salt and brine deposits. What is the most memorable travel experience you have had? What was special about it? My family and I decided to stay until the sun set, and we were not disappointed. The sight of the setting sun reflected on the lake was captured in my heart forever. We were advised to wrap up like zongzi, so that no single area of our bodies would be exposed to the harmful UV rays. The special “dress code” resulted in some very humorous photographs with my family. I am happy I had the chance to enjoy the beautiful scenery of a place in my country. I will never forget my trip to Chaka Salt Lake. 1. Discuss how the author describes the desert in the first journal entry. Firstly, the author describes how the sand dunes changed along the way in time order. When he first entered the Sahara Desert, he saw unending sand dunes that stretched before him. Later, when he went deep into the desert, the sand dunes became enormous, towering above them on all sides. The wind was blowing grains of sand from the tops of the dunes. Secondly, the author uses vivid words and contrast to describe the size and colour of the dunes. For example, when describing the size, he uses adjectives such as “enormous” and the verb “towering”; the colours of the dunes are made clear and vivid against the blue of the sky. Thirdly, the author describes how he feels about the desert. For example, he uses the following words like “wild beauty”, “completely empty” and “calming and threatening” to express his amazement at the scene as well as his awe and respect for nature. The author describes Mount Kilimanjaro towering into the sky, the tall grasses and trees dotting the plains and the wildlife wandering on the plains. To show the whole picture of the plains and make the reader feel personally on the scene, the author arranges details according to their location indicated by some words, such as “next to”, “over”, “before” and “in the distance”. The picture unfolds before the reader like a wide-angle photo. 2. Summarize what the author saw on the plains in the second journal entry and analyse how the author describes them. Furthermore, to make all the landscapes, plants and animals as vivid and impressive as possible, the author applies many specific verbs like “found”, “reflected, “facing”, “rose”, “dotted”, “pulling” , “eating” , “flapping” and “moved”, as well as adjectives and adverbs including “round”, “brilliant”, “highest”, “long”, “lazily” and “slowly”, making the picture an action shot. In addition, the author also uses metaphor in the last sentence of paragraph 2, comparing what he saw to the greatest show on the Earth to express how excited and satisfied he felt at that moment. In the last paragraph, the author uses two emphatic sentences: “It was then that I noticed a small grey monkey sitting on a tree a few metres away and eating a banana.”; “…it was my banana that he was eating!” They are intended to stress that the author did not expect the following things to happen at that time and that to him the adventure was full of surprises and wonders. At the same time, the word “my” is italicized, which means that the author was very surprised by the monkey’s action. 3. Pay attention to the emphatic sentences in the last paragraph of the second journal entry and talk about their effects. The wind was blowing grains of sand from the tops of the dunes, the sun was beating down hard and bright, and the sky was a deep shade of blue that I had never seen before. (lines 9-12) I had never seen anything like this before. (line 39) It was indeed the greatest show on the Earth. (lines 39-40) 4. Underline the sentences in the travel journal to show the authors amazement with the landscape in Africa. 5. Pay attention to the title “An adventure in Africa” and discuss why the author uses the word “adventure” instead of “journey” or other words. An adventure implies an unusual, exciting or dangerous experience, journey or series of events. First, the author, along with his parents, experienced some dangerous things. For example, they drove down the narrow mountain road with sharp bends and their car got completely stuck in the mud. Second, during this journey, the author saw some unusual and breathtaking scenery, such as the desert landscape, Mount Kilimanjaro, and African wildlife wandering on the plains. He also had the chance to get close to wildlife, riding camels, watching giraffes pulling leaves and elephants eating grass, and interacting with the monkey.· $$
