第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
Just as slang words, table manners, and other common customs vary greatly from nation to nation, so do rude gestures. The last thing you want to do when traveling to a new country is to offend (冒犯) the locals. Here are some hand motions you’ll want to be careful about making in certain countries.
Iran
What might seem to Americans like a universally positive gesture is not, in fact, universal. "Unfortunately, in Iran and neighboring countries, the thumbs-up is the same as the middle finger!" explains Dana Hooshmand, an author for Discover Discomfort. In America, the middle finger is the one showing disrespect; in Iran, it's the thumb. So, bear it in mind to avoid making this sign to Iranians.
Malaysia
As a little kid, you may have been blamed that "it's not respectful to point with your index finger!" especially if you dared pair the gesture with laughter. This is especially true in Malaysia. As a result, employees at Disney parks are trained to avoid doing this. Instead, if they must, they use two fingers or, the common alternative is to point with your thumb (particularly the right thumb).
Thailand
In USA, patting someone's head can be a sweet gesture, and messing someone's hair is a playful one. But in Thailand, it can be a serious offense. The head "is considered the most sacred (神圣的) part of the body, " she explains. So keep your hands away from others' heads to avoid disrespecting.
Taiwan, China
According to the locals, pointing to the moon will offend the moon goddess. Her punishment for this is very specific: She'll cut your ear of, or at the very least cut it in Van Gogh-style. So if you’re admiring a beautiful full moon in Taiwan, try your best to keep your hands by your sides.
21.What is the common reason for minding gestures in different countries?
A. Out of admiration. B. Out of curiosity.
C. Out of respect. D. Out of concern.
22. According to the article, which of the following can visitors do?
A. Touching others’ head in Thailand.
B. Pointing with index finger in Malaysia.
C.Aiming one's finger directly at the moon in Taiwan.
D.Making a thumb-up to others in USA.
23. Where is this text probably taken from?
A.A science report . B.A travel magazine.
C. A business review. D. A novel.
B
My husband and I recently went to Disney World with our children and grandchildren. Our grandchildren were excited about the attraction where they can drive the cars. Since our party was uneven in numbers and two people fit in each car, I sat out that one and headed down to take pictures of them.
As I waited for them to drive by, I noticed a car with a father and his son who looked to be about 7. They rolled down the hill, and then as they neared where I sat, the car shook a few times and then stopped.
The young driver looked frightened, “I can't do it.”
His father quietly said, “Yes, you can.”
“No, I can't!”
“Yes, you can.”
The little boy was almost in tears, “I CAN'T!”
With deep patience, the father said, “Son, you can do this. I'm going to help you.”
Then he talked him through starting the car. And moments later with the father helping his son, the two went smoothly on their way down the track.
The scene brought tears to my eyes because I couldn't imagine how many times my father had to do that with me. Every time things got hard or when I had failures along the way, I'd say, “I can't do it.” He'd reply, “You can.” Time and time again he patiently encouraged me on the journey. And just like that little boy's dad, my sweet father would say, “Michelle, you can do this. I'm going to help you.”
That's where the true strength comes in. I can't do things under my own power, but when my father comes beside me and provides wisdom (智慧) and strength, there's no way I can fail.
24. Why didn't the author join others in driving the cars?
A.Her family could drive except her.
B.Her family fit in the cars without her.
C.She was attracted by something else.
D.She wanted to take photos of her family.
25. What made the 7yearold son frightened?
A.He failed to drive the car well. B.He got the car to leave the track.
C.He rolled too fast down the way. D.He just couldn't get the car started.
26、How did the father assist his son?
A.By forcing him to drive bravely. B.By praising him for his efforts.
C.By starting the car himself. D.By encouraging him patiently.
27. What's the author's tone in writing the text?
A.Confused. B.Humorous. C.Grateful. D.Concerned.
C
Will the next generation do better than the one that came before? To young people in wealthier nations, that dream of upward mobility seems more like a story about the past than modern-day reality, according to a large new survey taken in 21 countries. In poorer countries, though, there is still hope that young people’s lives will be better than those of their parents, and that the world is becoming a better place.
“In a lot of the developing world, there is a bit more optimism that with each generation our living standards are improving,” said Laurence Chandy, director of the office of global insight and policy at UNICEF, which conducted the survey with Gallup. “But there’s a recognition in the West that that’s stopped happening.” In the United States, 56 percent of young people and 64 percent of older people said that children today would be worse off, economically, than their parents.
The survey was of 21,000 people in two age groups—15 to 24, and 40 and up—and included nationally representative samples from all regions of the world. The younger group said that children today were better off in basic ways, like education, health care and physical safety.
And the best part of being a young person today? Technology, according to respondents in follow up interviews.
But young people also have significant concerns. In the survey, about nine in ten said they sometimes or often have anxiety. Six in ten said children today have more pressure from adults to succeed than their parents did.
In the six richest countries in the survey, about one-third of young people said they thought today’s children would be economically better off than their parents. They were particularly pessimistic (悲观的) in Japan, France, Britain and Spain.
In low-income countries, though, about two-thirds of young people said they thought today’s children would do better financially than their parents, especially in Africa and South Asia. They were also more likely than those in high-or middle-income countries to say the world was becoming a better place with each generation.
28. How does the author develop the first paragraph?
A. By listing figure y giving examples B. By giving examples
C. By making a comparison D. By following the time order
29. What’s the best part of being a young person today?
A. Health care B. Education C.Physical safety D. Technology
30. What percentage of young people have anxiety in the survey?
A. 56% B. 90% C. 60% D. 64%
31. What’s the best title of the text?
A. Where are young people most optimistic?
B. How to make the world a better place?
C. What are the concerns of young people about economy?
D. Will children be much healthier than their parents?
D
If you live in one of the 40 million American households with a gas stove, it could be leaking even when it’s turned off.
According to a new study from Stanford scientists, many stoves are constantly giving out gases that can warm the planet and pose serious health risks when breathed in. The research found methane missions from gas stoves across the United States are roughly equal to the carbon dioxide released by half a million gas-powered cars in a year.
To estimate the impact of these emissions, researchers measured three key gases from stoves in 53 homes across seven California counties. The team chose two gases — methane and carbon dioxide — because of their contribution to climate change, and selected nitrogen oxides because of their known risk to human health. The scientists set up plastic dividing walls between the kitchens and other rooms and used instruments that measure wavelengths of light to determine the concentration of certain gases.
The team estimated that stoves release between 0.8 and 1.3 percent of the natural gas they consume as unburned methane. To their surprise, they found that more than three-quarters of the methane emissions happened when both old and new gas stoves were turned off. “Over a 20-year time scale, the global warming potential of methane leaks is 86 times greater than carbon dioxide,” Stanford reports.
The most significant health risks happen when the stove is lit, the authors note, because the process creates nitrogen dioxide as a byproduct. Increasing airflow by using a range hood can help reduce the personal health risk of natural gas-burning appliances, but most individuals report rarely using their ventilation system.
In a small kitchen, it only took a few minutes of unventilated stove use to generate emissions levels above national health standards. According to a meta-analysis from 2013, children living in homes with gas stoves were 42 percent more likely to experience symptoms associated with asthma, and 24 percent more likely to be diagnosed with lifetime asthma.
In addition to health risks, natural gas burning stoves also endanger the planet by releasing methane. The results of the study have furled efforts by scientists and activists to encourage Americans to switch to all-electric stoves and appliances.
32. Which gas leaking from stoves warms the earth most?
A.Nitrogen dioxide. B.Carbon dioxide. C.Nitrogen oxide. D.Methane.
33. What does the underlined word “they” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A.The measuring instruments. B.The American families.
C.The team members. D.The gas stoves.
34. When does a gas stove present the greatest health risks?
A.When it is turned on. B.When it is new.
C.When it is old. D.When it is turned off.
35. What would the researchers urge people to do?
A.Equip kitchens. B.Switch to clean fuels.
C.Purchase electric stoves. D.Use sustainable energy.

Fifteen Dollars From a Strange Woman
“Wake up. Mama!” I felt a little hand on my face and opened my eyes. There was my son, ready to start the day. I also heard my baby and toddler(学步的儿童) awake in the next room. Ready or not, the day had begun!
I loved being at home with my little ones, but I felt the weight of the world on my shoulders. My husband and I had just bought a house, and some unexpected expenses made our budget (预算) tighter than it had ever been.
I got out of bed and pulled on my faded jeans and sneakers that had seen better days. I only had one task on the to-do list for the day. I was going to pick up my kids’ photos from the studio at the local mall. Despite our small budget, it was important for me to have pictures of my children as they were growing up. Since we were going to the mall, I decided to make it an outing and packed some sandwiches for us to eat at the food court.
After breakfast, I put everyone into the car, and off we went. After we parked, I unfolded the double stroller (婴儿车), put in the youngest two kids and asked the oldest to hold onto the stroller.
We wheeled into the studio at the mall, and I approached the counter. The young woman smiled. “May I help you?”
“Yes, I’m here to pick up our photos,” I answered.
The woman asked my name and opened her large drawer. “Schmoyer... Schmoyer... Ah, yes, here they are. Aren’t they just so adorable?” She fanned out the photos and the smiling faces of my kids warmed my heart.
“Yes, they are great. Thank you,” I said.
She put the photos into an envelope for me. Then she spread out additional photos of my kids that I hadn’t ordered. I knew what that meant.
“Would you like to purchase these extra photos? They are only fifteen dollars a piece!” she smiled sweetly.

听力答案:1-5 BACBB 6-10 CAABB 11-15 ACBCB 16-20 ACAAC
21、答案:C
解析:推理判断题。根据第一段中“Just as slang words, table manners, and other common customs vary greatly from nation tonation, so do rude gestures. The last thing you want to do when traveling to a new country is to offend the locals.(正如俚语、餐桌礼仪和其他习俗因国而异一样,粗鲁的手势也因国而异。当你去一个新的国家旅行时,你最不想做的事情就是冒犯当地人)”可推知,在不同国家注意手势的共同原因是出于尊重。故选C项。

37、推理判断题。根据上一句"Clarify the team expectations so everyone is on the same page.(明确团队期望,让每个人都站在同一个角度。)"和下一句"It's likely that each teammate has a different idea about what's expected of them, as well as what everyone else needs to be doing. It's essential that the team discuss these expectations and agree on one universal list of expectations that everyone will follow.(很可能每个队友对他们的期望值以及其他人需要做的事情都有不同的想法。团队必须讨论这些期望,并就每个人都将遵循的普遍期望达成一致。)"可知,队友之间的期望值可能不一致,团队必须就此讨论,并达成一致,因此,G项"This can include explaining the expectations or asking questions if you find them unclear(这可以包括解释期望,或者在发现不清楚时提问。)"符合语境,该选项句意承上启下,与上下文意思连贯,故选G项。

Don't accuse or blame anyone on your team for causing the conflict, even if you believe they did.(把你的关注点放在问题上,而不是你的队友。不要指责或责怪你的团队中的任何人导致了冲突,即使你认为他们确实造成了冲突。)"可知,F项"Instead, keep all of your comments focused on the issue and how your team can solve it.(相反,你的所有评论都要关注这个问题,以及你的团队如何解决这个问题。)"符合语境,该选项句意与上文构成转折关系,进一步阐述了要把关注点放在问题上而不是你的队友。故选F项。
40、细节理解题。根据上文"Focus on the success of the group, not your personal success. When you're on a team, everyone's success depends on each member working toward a common goal. (关注团队的成功,而不是个人的成功。当你在一个团队中时,每个人的成功都取决于每个成员朝着一个共同的目标努力。)"和下文"Keep your focus on your team's success, and your own success will follow.(专注于团队的成功,你自己的成功也会随之而来)"可知,此处强调关注团队成功的重要性,因此,C项"Treat the team's accomplishments as a group success.(将小组的成就视为团队的成功。)"符合语境,该选项句意承上启下,切合文意,且选项中的"a group success"与上文中的"success of the group"相呼应,故选C项。

第一节 读后续写:
One possible version:
My face hardened and my heart turned cold. “I don’t have fifteen dollars.” I took the photo envelope and walked away, with my cheeks red after my reply. Next, we stopped at the ride-on toy cars in the mall’s food court. There weren’t any other kids there. My kids climbed on them enjoying themselves very much. After a while, we were tired so we unwrapped our lunches that I had brought from home. Although the mall’s food court was near, I didn’t have extra money. It was early for lunch, but we were hungry.
Just when we started our lunch, I found the woman we had met at the photo studio standing next to our table. She said, “Here. Take your family out for ice cream after lunch.” I was surprised. I managed to say “thank you” as she turned and walked away. Then I looked down at what she had given to me. The bills totaled fifteen dollars. Tears rolled down my cheeks as I quietly finished my sandwich. The doubts in my heart melted away and my faith was renewed. Kindness can change someone’s dark moment into a bright one.
