B Selina Zhang, a high schooler, has invented a trap that could potentially get rid of lanternflies (斑点灯蝇) in the city. She first noticed this pest in grade school. At the time, Zhang was visiting a market near her hometown and the colorful bugs caught her eye. Zhang’s first encounter with the lanternfly relates to the quote, “Not all that glitters is gold.” This bug whose bright red underwings stand out from black forewings (前翅) might be pretty to look at. However, it has damaged local agricultural industry for decades, and the city has been unable to remove this problem. This insect has a healthy appetite for most plants and can feed on most crops, trees and various fruits. This invasive (侵入的) pest does not harm humans or animals. However, it could reduce the quality of life of people living in heavily affected areas. It is known to be a nuisance (讨厌的东西) in outdoor areas as they can lay their egg masses on trees and even vehicles. Zhang eventually realized that this insect was a threat to Garden City and decided to do something about it. Most people choose insecticides to manage this invasion, but this can leave harmful remains. Some others use a sticky band to trap pests, but this method is also unsafe as it can trap other small animals and insects. In search of an ecologically acceptable method, Zhang got inspiration from chess boards and the “Dance Revolution”. She conducted an extensive field observation for weeks non- stop, observing the behavioral patterns of the bugs. She studied how they grew over time and navigated (进行导航) unfamiliar structures and areas they chose to gather. After her study, Zhang knew she wanted to copy the tree of heaven as a trap and used an umbrella. She then designed an electric net for this tree, using machine learning to kill the lanternflies that landed. And she finally created a solar- powered, self-cleaning “tree” that attracts the spotted lanternfly, removing the bug with an electronic net. 4. What does the quote “Not all that glitters is gold” in paragraph 2 mean? A. Things looking valuable may be worthless. B. Zhang’s hometown fails to get rid of the bug. C. Bodies of the beautiful lanternflies are shining. D. The bug destroys agricultural industry despite its beauty. 5. What can be learned about lanternflies? A. They live on greens and animals. B. They have a bad effect on people’s life. C. People hate them laying eggs everywhere. D. Their underwings are shorter than their forewings. 6. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about? A. The application of the trap. B. The source of the trap. C. The process of inventing the trap. D. The challenges of designing the trap. 7. Which of the following can best describe Zhang? A. Determined and innovative. B. Creative and outgoing. C. Reliable and knowledgeable. D. Intelligent and confident. C Point in the direction of food on the kitchen door, and your dog will follow your guidance to eat it up. That is a skill even our closest relative in the animal kingdom cannot match. “Chimps (黑猩猩) can perform much better than dogs on so many things,” said Brian Hare, a professor at Duke University. “But they’re not particularly good at understanding cooperative communicative gestures.” Previous studies have shown conflicting results about whether both dog and wolf puppies (幼崽) can read human gestures. So Hare’s team compared a group of young dogs with their wild cousins to test the question out. The dog puppies were service- dogs- in- training, and most of them were raised by a nonprofit organization. Like other young puppies, they engaged in human interaction sometimes throughout the day, and they were still looked after by their mother. The young wolves, on the other hand, were separated from their mother 10 or 11 days after they were born, and they were around human handlers 24/7, living at the Wildlife Science Center. The scientists put 44 dogs and 37 wolf puppies, all between 5 and 18 weeks old, through a series of tests and challenges. In one task, researchers placed a treat in one of two bowls, and then pointed a finger at the bowl containing the snack three times. The dog puppies were twice as likely to understand where to go even though they had experienced far less human contact, and the researchers made sure the pups were not just smelling the food. And in a separate test, the dogs were 30 times more likely to approach an unknown human and made significantly more eye contact with people than little wolves. “The comparison of so many young dogs and wolves on a wide variety of tasks is very exciting” said Angie Johnston, a researcher at Boston College, who was not involved with the new work. “It’s a very ambitious study.” 8. In which aspect did the experimental animals differ? A. Their age. B. Their living conditions. C. The number of tests they took part in. D. The human gestures they were about to read. 9. What can we learn from this study? A. The dog puppies were less likely to get the treat. B. The dog puppies were more willing to interact with people. C. The wolf puppies weren’t as interested in the food as the dogs were. D. The wolf puppies weren’t so intelligent as dog puppies. 10. What is Angie Johnston’s attitude to the study? A. Uncaring. B. Uncertain. C. Supportive. D. Confused. 11. What would be the best title for the passage? A. Reading Humans: Dog Pups Outperform Wolf Pups? B. Chimps vs Dog Pups: Who’s the Master of Gestures? C. Interacting with Humans: Dog Pups’ Secret to Understanding Gestures? D. Dog Pups’ Skill: Master Eye Contact for Food? D “Imagine you have to make a speech, but instead of looking down at your notes, the words appear in front of your eyes, whichever direction you look in,” says Steve Sinclair when introducing the smart contact lenses (隐形眼睛) being developed by his company Mojo. However, this is just one of many features the makers of smart contact lenses promise will be available in the future. Other smart lenses are being developed to collect health data. They are expected to help to self-monitor and track glucose (葡萄糖) levels, according to Rebecca Rojas, instructor at Columbia University. “They can also provide extended-release (缓释) drug-delivery options. It’s exciting to see how far technology has come, and the potential it offers to improve patients’ lives.” Despite the excitement, smart lenses technology still has to overcome a number of challenges. One challenge will be powering them with batteries that will obviously have to be incredibly tiny, so will they deliver enough power to do anything useful? Mojo is still testing its product, but wants customers to be able to wear its lenses all day, without having to re charge them. “The expectation is that you are not consuming information from the lens all the time but in short moments throughout the day. Actual battery life will depend on how and how often it is used, just like your smartphone or smartwatch today,” a company spokesperson explains. Besides, according to senior policy analyst Daniel Leufer, any device with a forward-facing camera that allows a user to take pictures, or record videos, presents risks to bystanders’ (旁观者) privacy. Additionally, there are concerns about the product that will be familiar to anyone who wears regular contacts. “Any type of contact lens can present a risk to eye health, if not properly cared for or not fitted properly. Just like any other medical device, we need to make sure the patients’ health comes first,” says Ms Rojas. “We know it’s going to take some time for the public to accept it. But we think it’s unavoidable that all of our eyewear is eventually going to become smart,” says Mr Sinclair. 12. What can Mojo’s smart lenses enable wearers to do? A. Take notes whenever necessary. B. Keep going in the right direction. C. Receive information before their eyes. D. Share important information with others. 13. How could smart lenses benefit wearers’ health? A. By reducing their glucose levels. B. By avoiding the use of eye drugs. C. By reminding them to do exercise. D. By informing them of their health state. 14. Which of the following is NOT a concern of the company? A. Long- term use without worrying about charging. B The risk of invading (侵犯) the privacy of bystanders. C. The possibility of causing harm to eye health. D. The lack of confidence in the prospect of smart eyewear. 15. What can we learn from Mr Sinclair’s words in the last paragraph? A. He is confident about the smart lenses’ future. B. He will spend more time improving the smart lenses. C. He expects the smart lenses to be a hit once launched. D. He is worried about the problems brought by the smart lenses. Tidying your desk, watering your plants or folding laundry — these household chores are hardly the height of hedonism ____16____. Psychologists suggest there are many potential mechanisms that might explain the perfect pleasure of puttering They may well encourage you to engage in it more often. Pleasant distractions On the surface level, puttering may be useful because it occupies the mind, so that we give fewer resources to the things that are worrying us. For instance, we may find household tasks can help us focus on the present moment. People completing these small tasks often report a significantly better mood. ____17____, as if the immersion (沉浸) in the simple activity had refreshed their minds. ____18____ Unlike other distracting activities- such as playing computer games or watching trashy TV — puttering also has the advantage of being positive and useful, increasing our “perceived control”. When we feel anxious, a sense of helplessness can heighten the physiological stress response, increasing levels of hormones. Ideally, we would deal directly with the upsetting situation itself. But research suggests we can gain a perception of control from activities that may have little effect on the situation that’s bothering us. Tidy room, focused mind ____19____. If your puttering takes the form of organizing and decluttering (清理), you may find that the tidier environment is itself a form of comfort. To summarize, if we see order outside, it helps us to feel a bit less chaotic inside. ____20____. A. Being powerful B. A feeling of control C. The benefits do not end there D. D 5. B 6. C 7. 根据文章第二段中“This bug whose bright red underwings stand out from black forewings(前翅) might be pretty to look at. However, it has damaged local agricultural industry for decades, and the city has been unable to remove this problem. (这种虫子有着鲜红下翼,从黑色的前翼中脱颖而出,看起来可能很漂亮。然而,它已经破坏了当地农业几十年,城市一直无法解决这个问题。)”可知,斑点灯蝇看起来很漂亮,但实际上对农业造成了破坏,这与“Not all that glitters is gold (并非所有闪光的都是金子)”在本句的含义相符。A. Things looking valuable may be worthless看起来有价值的东西可能毫无价值;B. Zhang’s hometown fails to get rid of the bug张的家乡没有消灭这种虫子;C. Bodies of the beautiful lanternflies are shining美丽的斑点灯蝇身体闪闪发光;D. The bug destroys agricultural industry despite its beauty这种虫子虽然美丽,却破坏了农业。 根据文章第三段中“This invasive (侵入的) pest does not harm humans or animals. However, it could reduce the quality of life of people living in heavily affected areas. (这种入侵性害虫不会伤害人类或动物。然而,它可能会降低生活在严重受感染地区的人们的生活质量。)”可知,灯笼虫对人类的生活有负面影响,故选B项。 【6题详解】 主旨大意题。根据文章最后一段“She then designed an electric net for this tree, using machine learning to kill the lanternflies that landed. And she finally created a solar- powered, self-cleaning “tree” that attracts the spotted lanternfly, removing the bug with an electronic net. (然后她为这棵树设计了一个电网,利用机器学习杀死落在上面的斑点灯蝇。她最终创造了一棵太阳能驱动的、自清洁的“树”,吸引斑点灯蝇,用电子网去除虫子。)”可知,本段主要讲述了张发明陷阱的过程,故选C项。 【7题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章第四段中“Zhang eventually realized that this insect was a threat to Garden City and decided to do something about it. (张最终意识到这种昆虫对花园城市构成了威胁,决定采取行动。)”以及最后一段“She then designed an electric net for this tree, using machine learning to kill the lanternflies that landed. And she finally created a solar- powered, self-cleaning “tree” that attracts the spotted lanternfly, removing the bug with an electronic net. (然后她为这棵树设计了一个电网,利用机器学习杀死落在上面的斑点灯蝇。她最终创造了一棵太阳能驱动的、自清洁的“树”,吸引斑点灯蝇,用电子网去除虫子。)”可知,张在发现问题后,坚持不懈地寻找解决方案,并最终创新性地发明了一种陷阱,所以张是一个有决心,并且创新的人。故选A项。 C Point in the direction of food on the kitchen door, and your dog will follow your guidance to eat it up. “The comparison of so many young dogs and wolves on a wide variety of tasks is very exciting,” said Angie Johnston, a researcher at Boston College, who was not involved with the new work. B 9. B 10. C 11. 根据第三段“The dog puppies were service- dogs- in- training, and most of them were raised by a nonprofit organization. Like other young puppies, they engaged in human interaction sometimes throughout the day, and they were still looked after by their mother. The young wolves, on the other hand, were separated from their mother 10 or 11 days after they were born, and they were around human handlers 24/7, living at the Wildlife Science Center.(这些幼犬是正在接受训练的服务犬,它们中的大多数是由非营利组织养大的。像其他幼犬一样,它们在一天中有时会与人类互动,它们仍然由它们的母亲照顾。另一方面,这些小狼在出生后10或11天就与母亲分开了,它们每天24小时都在人类饲养员的身边,生活在野生动物科学中心。)”可知,实验动物在生活条件方面不同,故选B。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“And in a separate test, the dogs were 30 times more likely to approach an unknown human and made significantly more eye contact with people than little wolves.(在另一项单独的测试中,狗接近陌生人的可能性是小狼的30倍,与人进行更多的目光接触。)” 根据最后一段““The comparison of so many young dogs and wolves on a wide variety of tasks is very exciting,” said Angie Johnston, a researcher at Boston College, who was not involved with the new work. “It’s a very ambitious study.”(Boston College的研究人员Angie Johnston没有参与这项新研究,她说:“将这么多年轻的狗和狼在各种各样的任务上进行比较,这非常令人兴奋。”“这是一项雄心勃勃的研究。”)”可知,Angie Johnston对这项研究的态度是支持的。故选C。 【11题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第二段“Previous studies have shown conflicting results about whether both dog and wolf puppies (幼崽) can read human gestures. So Hare’s team compared a group of young dogs with their wild cousins to test the question out.(之前的研究表明,关于狗和狼的幼崽是否都能读懂人类的手势,结果相互矛盾。因此,Hare的团队将一群年轻的狗和它们的野生表亲进行了比较,以验证这个问题。)”和倒数第二段“The dog puppies were twice as likely to understand where to go even though they had experienced far less human contact, and the researchers made sure the pups were not just smelling the food. And in a separate test, the dogs were 30 times more likely to approach an unknown human and made significantly more eye contact with people than little wolves.(即使与人接触少得多,幼犬知道该去哪里的可能性也要高出一倍,而且研究人员确保幼犬不仅仅是在嗅食物。在另一项单独的测试中,狗接近陌生人的可能性是小狼的30倍,与人进行更多的目光接触。)”可知,本文主要讲的是科学家通过实验对比发现,与狼幼崽相比,狗幼崽更擅长理解人类的手势指示,尤其是在寻找食物和与人类互动方面表现出更高的能力,因此最好的题目是A选项“Reading Humans: Dog Pups Outperform Wolf Pups?(解读人类:狗的幼崽比狼的幼崽更好?)”。故选A。 D “Imagine you have to make a speech, but instead of looking down at your notes, the words appear in front of your eyes, whichever direction you look in,” says Steve Sinclair when introducing the smart contact lenses (隐形眼睛) being developed by his company Mojo. B. The risk of invading (侵犯) the privacy of bystanders. C 13. D 14. D 15. 根据文章第一段中的““Imagine you have to make a speech, but instead of looking down at your notes, the words appear in front of your eyes, whichever direction you look in,” says Steve Sinclair when introducing the smart contact lenses (隐形眼睛) being developed by his company Mojo. Psychologists suggest there are many potential mechanisms that might explain the perfect pleasure of puttering (慢条斯理地做). They may well encourage you to engage in it more often. A feeling of control C The benefits do not end there D. We will feel great anxiety in our mind E. This included reduced nervousness and even a sense of “inspiration” F. It is comforting because it makes life easier to manage and more predictable G. Yet we often find ourselves seeking pleasure and comfort in small repetitive tasks 【答案】16. G 17. E 18. B 19. C 20. F 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了慢条斯理地做日常琐事可以提供精神上的分散和控制感,以及创造有序的环境来提升人们的心情和减轻焦虑。 【16题详解】 上文“Tidying your desk, watering your plants or folding laundry — these household chores are hardly the height of hedonism (享乐主义).(整理办公桌、浇花或叠衣服——这些家务活并不是享乐主义的最高境界)”说明家务活并不是典型的享乐行为。空处和前文形成转折关系,并且引出下文。G项中的yet为转折连词,“seeking pleasure and comfort in small repetitive tasks”和下文“might explain the perfect pleasure of puttering (慢条斯理地做)”相呼应,说明尽管家务活并不是享乐主义的最高境界,但是人们还是会在这些琐碎的任务中找到乐趣。所以G项“然而,我们经常发现自己在一些细小的重复性任务中寻求快乐和慰藉”符合语境。故选G。 【17题详解】 上文“People completing these small tasks often report a significantly better mood.(完成这些小任务的人通常会报告心情明显好转)”以及下文“as if the immersion (沉浸) in the simple activity had refreshed their minds.(仿佛沉浸在简单的活动中让他们精神焕发)”说明完成家务小任务会让人心情明显好转。空处进一步说明心情变好的具体表现。E项中的“reduced nervousness and even a sense of “inspiration””和上文中的“ a significantly better mood”相呼应,也和下文的“refreshed their minds”相呼应,所以E项“这包括减少了紧张感,甚至有一种“灵感”的感觉”符合语境。故选E。 【18题详解】 下文“Unlike other distracting activities- such as playing computer games or watching trashy TV — puttering also has the advantage of being positive and useful, increasing our “perceived control”.(不像其他分散注意力的活动——比如玩电脑游戏或看低质量的电视节目——慢条斯理地做事情也有其积极和有用的一面,能增加我们的“感知控制力”)”以及“But research suggests we can gain a perception of control from activities that may have little effect on the situation that’s bothering us.(但研究表明,我们可以从对困扰我们的情况影响不大的活动中获得控制感)”说明与其他分散注意力的活动相比,慢条斯理地做事还具有积极和有用的优势,可以增加我们的“感知控制”。所以B项“控制的感觉”适合作本段的主旨句。故选B。 【19题详解】 标题“Tidy room, focused mind(整洁的房间,专注的思维)”以及下文“If your puttering takes the form of organizing and decluttering (清理), you may find that the tidier environment is itself a form of comfort.(如果你的慢条斯理表现为整理和去杂乱,你可能会发现,整洁的环境本身就是一种安慰)”说明整洁的环境能让人专注,而且如果你的慢条斯理表现为整理和去杂乱,整洁的环境本身就是一种安慰。所以空处承上启下,既总结了标题提到的好处,也引出下文中其它的好处。所以C项“好处不仅仅于此”符合语境。故选C。 【20题详解】 上文“To summarize, if we see order outside, it helps us to feel a bit less chaotic inside.(总结来说,如果我们看到外界是有序的,这会帮助我们感觉到内心不那么混乱)”说明整洁的外部环境能带来内心的平静。空处顺接前文,进一步说明整洁的外部环境带来的好处。F项“这让人感到安慰,因为它使生活更容易管理且更具可预测性”符合语境,it指代前文中提到的“order outside”。故选F。 第三部分 语言知识运用(共五节,满分55分) 第一节 完形填空(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 My wife knows me well.
