October 11th Friday Sunny
In order to familiarize us with the school environment and facilities, our form teacher organized a campus tour for us freshmen from 4:00 to 6:00 pm on October 11th.
We explored various parts of the campus, including the library, gym, science labs, school history room and canteen. The library, in particular, interests me most. I was deeply attracted by its vast collection of books and quiet atmosphere. It felt like a treasure of knowledge waiting to be discovered by us students.
Overall, the tour was not only educational but also inspiring. It made me feel more connected to the school and eager to start my high school journey. I am grateful for the opportunity to get to know my new learning space and can't wait to make the most of it.

Two teenagers from Montgomery Blair High School, Dhruv Pai, 16, and Matt Casertano, 15, were both buying groceries(食品杂货)for their grandparents in early March, as coronavirus(冠状病毒)cases started to appear in the Washington area. That’s when Dhruv realized the greater need — and a possible way to solve the problem.
The two created Teens Helping Seniors, which connects older people with volunteers who will deliver(递送)groceries right to their doorstep for free. They developed the idea in March just before schools closed because of the outbreak, which suddenly gave them and their classmates a lot more time to help out. Matt said they planned for Teens Helping Seniors to be a network for classmates at their high school at first, but within a week they started to develop because of the high demand(需求). By the end of the second week, Matt and Dhruv already had their first chapter outside Montgomery County, in Albany, N. Y. The group now has more than ten chapters in the United States and one forming abroad in Montreal.
Regula Guess, who lives in Potomac, heard about Teens Helping Seniors from a neighbor, when the area started to shut down in mid-March. Guess, 65, said her husband is at risk because of his age, and she was afraid of going to the store.
Teens Helping Seniors connected Guess with Jacob Kaplan-Davis, a junior at Wootton High School. Guess said Jacob would call her from the store if he had questions. “I was just so thankful for what these young people were doing,” she said. “It’s just amazing how this brings out the good in people.”
Jacob, 16, said he spends six to eight hours a week buying groceries. Usually, he makes two deliveries a week.
“The first time I went, it took me forever to find everything. But soon I started to learn the layout(布局)and got faster,” said Jacob, who seldom went grocery shopping before volunteering for Teens Helping Seniors. “It’s given me a greater understanding of my mom when she goes grocery shopping,” he said.
24.What made Dhruv have the idea of setting up Teens Helping Seniors?
A.The experience of buying groceries for his grandparents.
B.The fact that the old are unable to go to the stores.
C.The encouragement from the old he had helped.
D.The greatly increasing cases of coronavirus.
25.What do we know about Teens Helping Seniors?
A.It has been a network only at a high school. B.It was set up after schools closed.
C.It has been largely developed. D.It was created by Dhruv alone.
26.What do Guess’ words mean?
A.She thought highly of the teen volunteers.
B.She looked forward to joining the organization.
C.She encouraged people to follow the teens’ lead.
D.She thought the teens should have worked harder.
27.What did Jacob learn from his work for Teens Helping Seniors?
A.He knew how to make choices. B.He understood his mom better.
C.He became organized and brave. D.He started to try to talk to strangers.
C
In recent studies we have been investigating mirror writing by typical 4- to 6-year-old children. The term is used because the characters — numbers and capital letters — are reversed (反向/颠倒), yet are correct when looked at in a mirror.
Mirror writing entered the scientific literature in 1878. The explanations for the phenomenon were not only insufficient but also often wrong. One of them is — writing with the left hand. Throughout the 20th century, scientific journals have published mirror writing mostly produced by left-handed children. Even today, left-handedness is often the favorite explanation of teachers when children produce mirror writing.
The explanation we find for the phenomenon of mirror writing of characters works on two successive levels, the first cerebral (大脑的)and the second behavioral. The cerebral level shows that the brain removes orientation (left or right) when storing images, a process called symmetrization or mirror generalization. This mirror-generalization process leads children aged 5 to know, from memory, the shape of the characters, but not their left/right orientation. In view of the features of the process — horizontal(水平的) mirror in the visual modality (视觉模式) — it is important to note that the initial learning of the form of the characters by the children is mainly visual, and that the children only produce horizontal mirror writing.
At the behavioral level, when children write the characters from memory, they must give them an orientation. In countries whose primary languages are written in Latin characters — written from left to right — children most often point them toward the right. This leads them to reverse mainly the left-oriented characters: J, Z, 1, 2, 3, 7, and 9. However, when spatial constraints (限制)cause them to write from right to left, the children instead reverse the right-oriented letters.
Since this explanation has nothing to do with the handedness of the children, it can be predicted that right-handed children will reverse characters almost often as left-handed children, and that – left-handed or right-handed – children will primarily reverse left-oriented characters in Western culture. This is because they strictly orient the characters in the direction of writing.
28. What aspect of a character does mirror generalization help children to know?
A. Its form. B. Its pronunciation. C. Its meaning. D. Its orientation.
29. Which paragraph shows why mirror writing is reversed horizontally rather than vertically (垂直)?
A. Paragraph 2. B. Paragraph 3. C. Paragraph 4. D. Paragraph 5.
30. Which of the following is likely to be reversed by a child writing from right to left?
A. M. B. C. C. 8. D. 9.
31. What can we learn from the study?
A. Handedness is the main reason for mirror writing.
B. Right-handed children won’t write reversed characters.
C. Left-handed children reverse right-oriented characters more often.
D. Children in the US tend to primarily reverse left-oriented characters.
D
Two of the saddest words in the English language are “if only” (要是......就好了). I live my life with the goal of never having to say those words, because they convey regret, lost opportunities, mistakes, and disappointment.
My father is famous in our family for saying “Take the extra minute to do it right.” I always try to live by the “extra minute” rule. When my children were young and likely to cause accidents, I always thought about what I could do to avoid an “if only” moment, whether it was something minor like moving a cup full of hot coffee away from the edge of a counter, or something that required a little more work such as taping padding (衬垫) onto the sharp corners of a glass coffee table.
I don’t only avoid those “if only” moments when it comes to safety. It’s equally important to avoid “if only” in our personal relationships. We all know people who lost a loved one and regretted that they had foregone an opportunity to say “I love you” or “I forgive you”. When my father announced he was going to the eye doctor across from my office on Friday, I told him that it was a holiday for my company and I wouldn’t be here. But then I thought about the fact that he was 84 years old and I realized that I shouldn’t give up an opportunity to see him. I called him and told him I had decided to go to work on my day off after all.
I know there will still be occasions when I have to say “if only” about something, but my life is definitely better because of my policy of doing everything possible to avoid that eventuality. And even though it takes an extra minute to do something right, or it occasionally takes an hour or two in my busy schedule to make a personal connection, I know that I’m doing the right thing. I’m buying myself peace of mind and that’s the best kind of insurance for my emotional well-being.
32.Which of the following is an example of the “extra minute” rule?
A. Start the car the moment everyone is seated.
B. Leave the room for a minute with the iron working.
C. Wait for an extra minute so that the steak tastes better.
D. Move an object out of the way before it stops one’s way.
33.What does the underlined word “foregone” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. taken up B. stayed away from C. run out of D. given up.
34.What did the author decide to go to her office on Friday to do?
A. Keep her appointment with the eye doctor.
B. Meet her father who was already an old man.
C Join in the holiday celebration of the company.
D. Finish her work before the deadline approached.
35.What is the best title for the passage?
A. The Peace of Mind B. The Most Useful Rule
C. The Two Saddest Words D. The Emotional Well-Being

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Going from middle school into the freshman year of high school is a big change. 36
Be open to new friendships.
High school is all about experiencing new things, including new friendships. Getting to know people you haven’t met before is a great way to broaden your horizons (眼界). 37 Simply sitting with a new person at lunch can be enough to get the ball rolling.
Explore the campus.
For most people, going off to high school means heading off to a new campus. 38 They might be able to show you round the campus, which will make you have more confidence as you go on with your freshman year.
Get organized.
Academically speaking, high school and middle school are very different. 39 You can buy a planner (记事簿) and spend a few minutes each night going over the notes you took in class that day. Staying on top of your studies will make the transition (过渡) from middle school to high school much easier.
40
While there’s no need to plan every day for the next three years, it can’t hurt to make notes of classes you want to take or activities you’d like to try. Believe it or not, the three years goes by really fast. Having a plan in place will help you make good use of your high school experience.
