Dear Jack,
Thrilled to know that you are planning to visit Jingzhou during the winter vacation, I’m writing to extend my warm welcome and offer my suggestions.
Before your trip, make sure to pack warm clothes considering the weather. In addition, you’d better book your tickets and hotel in advance, as they can get fully booked during the holidays. (For transport, it is highly suggested that you take a high-speed train from Beijing to Jingzhou. Not only is it convenient and efficient to travel around by train, but it is also a good chance to admire the scenery on the way.) As for tourist attractions, I strongly recommend visiting the Jingzhou Ancient City Wall, which offers breathtaking views and a glimpse into our rich history. Another must-see is the Jingzhou Museum, where you can learn more about our glorious local culture from the impressive collection of historical artifacts. (When it comes to food, don’t miss the local specialties such as “Jingzhou Fish cake", which is famous for the unique flavor and texture.)
I hope these suggestions will be useful to you. Wish you a pleasant and memorable journey!
Yours,
Li Hua

(Text 1)
W: Would you like a cup of coffee?
M: No thanks — it stops me sleeping. I wouldn’t mind a cold drink though.
(Text 2)
W: Can you tell me the way to the bus station, please?
M: Yes. Go over the bridge and turn right. Walk towards the capital stadium. The bus station will be on your right between the car park and the stadium.
(Text 3)
W: This sweater looks really nice on you.
M: But I don’t want to spend that much money on a sweater. This shirt is much cheaper. Is it cotton?
W: Yes, it is. It fits you well. And the color is really cool.
(Text 4)
W: This course wasn’t supposed to be hard.
M: But it turned out to be, didn’t it?
(Text 5)
M: Yes! That’s another goal for the Frogs! The score is 3:0 now.
W: You are really a Frogs fan, Dave.
M: Yeah. I like the Frogs very much, especially Mario Sanchez.
W: He is very talented. It’s too bad he’s not playing in this game.
(Text 6)
W: I’ll never get both the sofa and the table in this room.
M: Let’s see if I can help.
W: Thanks.
M: We can put the sofa against the wall, over to the left. Then the table will fit under the window.
W: That’s great. How did you think of that?
M: Remember, I’m studying decoration. It’s easy.
W: Oh, yeah, I forgot. Come on, I’ll buy you a hamburger.
M: I’m not hungry. But I really need a cup of coffee.
W: OK. I’ll make some for you.
(Text 7)
M: Have you got anything exciting planned for the weekend?
W: No, not really. I was going round to Nora’s but unfortunately she’s got a bad cold. Well, I will play tennis on Saturday.
M: If the weather lets you.
W: And on Sunday I’m going to see my parents and eat out with them.
M: Oh, very busy. I’m going to have a lazy weekend. I’m going to be packing, sorting out things so that when I fly away next Wednesday, it won’t be too much of a headache.
(Text 8)
W: Good morning, this is Melinda Beasley. I’d like to speak to Mr. Turner please.
M: I’m sorry. Mr. Turner is out of the office for a very important meeting at the moment and cannot be disturbed.
W: When will he come back then?
M: He could come back around three o’clock this afternoon. Would you like to leave a message?
W: Yes, Mr. Turner is scheduled for an interview with me tomorrow at 9 a.m. I’d just like to make sure that he is still able to make the appointment.
M: I’ll give him the message and ask him to send you an e-mail when he comes back in the afternoon.
(Text 9)
W: Good morning, Ken! What seems to be the matter?
M: I have a sore throat and this slight cough.
W: It doesn’t sound too bad. How long have you had it?
M: Since yesterday afternoon.
W: Have you got a temperature, Ken?
M: I was 37.1 degrees last night.
W: I think you’ve got a cold.
M: Too bad! My band is having its first concert tomorrow and I’m not going to miss it. But how am I going to sing like this?
W: Eat some honey, drink a lot of water and take this medicine.
M: And, Doctor ... ahm ... There’s another thing. I have an upset stomach.
W: How long have you had this problem?
M: Since this morning. My throat is burning all the time and I have these pills to cool it.
W: How many have you taken?
M: Twelve.
W: Twelve? That is why you have an upset stomach! You’ve taken far too many! You should take six a day at the most!
(Text 10)
M: Hi, John. I’m really pleased that you can look after my house while I’m away. Here are some things you need to know about the house. Let’s start with the rubbish, which is collected on Friday. The rubbish bag will be put back outside the house empty. It’s a good idea to put it away quickly because this place can be quite windy. I once watched my next door neighbor run the whole street to catch her bag.
There’s a box full of old newspapers in the front room. Please put it out on Tuesday. I have some books to give to a school nearby. Would you put them out on Monday the 25th please? The truck will come by during the day on the last Monday of the month.
If you want to use the library, you’ll find it on Darling Street. I’ve left my borrower’s card near the telephone. Oh … yes! The washing machine! Would you clean it on the last day of the month? We find that the machine works much better if we clean it regularly. I’ve paid the gas bill, so don’t worry about that.

Some Cool Sports at the Olympic Games
The Olympic Games, or the Olympics, continue to develop, introducing some exciting sports that
attract the fans’ attention worldwide.
Surfing
In the 1920s, surfing fans began asking for the sport to be added to the Olympic program.
Surfing was included in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Then the famous surfing place, Teahupo’o
in Tahiti, has hosted the surfing competition in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The speed, power and
flow of surfers are important in the games. The variety, type and difficulty of the tricks have also been
judged by five judges.
Breaking
Breaking, also known as break dancing, started in the Bronx, New York City, in the1970s as part
of hip-hop culture. It grew as part of the underground culture of the 1980s. Judges score the breakers
mainly based on musicality, performance, originality, technique and completion. Each one makes up
part of the score.
Skateboarding
Skateboarding began in the US in the 1950s when surf culture was popular. The sport continued
to grow and became very popular at the start of the 21st century, especially among young people.

indoors. In 1985, climbers held the first climbing competition in Bardonecchia, Italy. Sport climbing
first appeared in the Youth Olympic Games Buenos Aires 2018. After gaining popularity at youth
events, it was introduced as a new sport at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

I started to worry when the golf car taking me, Steve, and our suitcases stopped in the middle of
the Maine forest. A yurt (蒙古包) is a tent tall enough to stand in and wide enough to fit a big family.
But I didn’t see it anywhere.
“You hike from here,” said the driver, pointing down a weedy (杂草丛生的) path. The woods
were darkening, and Steve encouraged me to pick up the pace. My summer shoes slipped on the wet
leaves. Steve and I spent a good hour until we saw the light of the yurt.
Steve expertly made a fire. We ate some sandwiches, had a few beers, and settled in for a good
night’s sleep. But I couldn’t relax. I shook Steve awake. “The door to the yurt doesn’t lock,” I said.
“What if a bear wanders into the camp?”
“Don’t worry. Moose (驼鹿) are a bigger problem here than bears,” he said.
“Well, what if someone decides to rob us? Or what if one of the locals wants to teach us a lesson?”
“OK,” Steve said with a heavy sigh. He forcefully placed a chair under the door handle. “There,
additional protection.” He smiled. “And even if someone gets through the door, you’ll have time to
grab that book and use it as a weapon.” I laughed. Sleep moved in. We could enjoy our weekend.
When we “checked out” three mornings later, I was the first one up. That’s when I realized that
the door opened ... out. The chair had been serving no purpose other than to keep me quiet.
“So,” I said, as we walked heavily back to meet the golf car. “How else have you been ‘handling’
me this weekend?”
He smiled. “Well. I decided not to tell you about the snake that lived in the firewood.”
24..What can be learned from the first two paragraphs?
A.1I was quite looking forward to the trip. B. It was easy to get to the yurt.
C. I felt nervous and anxious about the trip. D. The golf car sent us directly to the yurt.
25. What might be the real reason for Steve to put a chair under the door handle?
A. To make it safer to sleep inside. B. To stop me from worrying.
C. To protect us from locals. D. To protect us from Moose.
26. What can we infer about Steve?
A. He left the door to the yurt unlocked on purpose.
B. He might have some experience in sleeping in a yurt.
C. He put the snake in the firewood.
D. He had learned a lesson from the locals.
27. What can be the best title of the passage?
A. AMeaningful Trip to Yurt B. Getting Close to Nature in a Yurt
C. More to Know about Yurt D. The Time I Survived a Yurt

The Australian National University (ANU) and an Australian start-up, Lunaria One, are teaming
up to grow plants on the moon together, as early as 2025. Lunaria One’s ALEPH project is an early
step toward growing plants for food, medicine and oxygen production. However, the problem is that
the moon is like a desert (沙漠). There’s no life there, only dust, rocks and water.
学科网(北京)股份有限公司
高一 10 月月考英语试卷 第 4 页 共 8 页
“Space provides a special opportunity to study how to grow plants in extreme environments,”
said ANU Associate Professor Caitlin Byrt. “The extreme conditions that the Earth is facing because
of climate change present challenges for how we manage food security in the future. Having
controlled environments can create the ability to rapidly grow plants after natural disasters or events
caused by climate change. So this project is important. If you can create a system for growing plants
on the moon, then you can create a system for growing food in some of the most challenging
environments on Earth.”
As to what plants to be grown on the moon researchers are still deciding, but one of the front
runners under consideration is Tripogon loliiformis, a kind of Australian native (本土的) grass that
can live in extreme conditions and survive for months without water. According to a plant biologist,
even after losing more than 95 percent of its relative water content, the dead-looking grass remains
alive and continues to grow when provided with water. Whatever plants are selected, they will be
transported to the moon in a dry and sleeping state and will come to life upon watering.
The ship will take off in 2025. Upon arrival, pictures and videos will be sent back to Earth over a
72-hour period and will be publicly accessible (可得到的). “The ALEPH project aims to make the
science and engineering behind growing life on the moon open to people. And we hope to get
everyone involved (参与的) and listen to their opinions. If you’re interested in the project, you can get
all the necessary information from our website,” said Lauren Fell, the director of Lunaria One.
28. What does the second paragraph mainly tell us?
A. The methods of growing plants in space. B. The challenges of growing plants after disasters.
C. The value of growing plants on the moon. D. The need to grow food for a growing population.
29. Why is Tripogon loliiformis being considered for the project?
A. It can produce young plants fast. B. It can live with little water.
C. It is the most common grass in Australia. D. It can naturally wake up from a sleeping state.
30. What is Lauren Fell’s attitude towards the public joining the project?
A. Supportive. B. Shocked. C. Negative. D. Worried.
31. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Plants are on the moon for the first time
B. How to care for plants in extreme environments?
C. Why can this Australian native grass grow in space?
D. A space project aims to grow plants on the moon
D
Survivor bias (偏差 ) happens when we look at successful outcomes and lose sight of failures.
This can create a misleading view of reality.
Survivor bias is a hidden issue that often goes unnoticed in analyses. Naturally, we prefer to
focus on success stories, whether they are leaders or people who overcame medical issues. These
success stories are more frequently shared and heard than those about failures.
Consider famous college dropouts like Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs, and Bill Gates. Their
success might make you think that a college degree is not important. However, that’s survivor bias at
play! These successful people get a lot of media attention because they are outstanding. You often
forget about the many college dropouts who do not become rich and famous. It is important to
consider their experiences too.
学科网(北京)股份有限公司
高一 10 月月考英语试卷 第 5 页 共 8 页
Survivor bias is also present in medical research. Younger and healthier people are more likely to
survive the initial diagnosis (初次诊断) of a disease. Therefore, they are more likely to join medical
studies. In comparison, older and weaker patients are less likely to survive long enough to take part in
these studies. Consequently, these studies can overrate how well treatments work because they are less
likely to include those who die shortly after diagnosis.
Successful cases are usually easier to notice and contact than unsuccessful ones. However,
focusing on the successful examples and ignoring other cases brings in survivor bias. This means that
you’re leaving out a serious part of the complete picture, as it’s harder to get data from less successful
people. This incomplete data can lead us to make poor decisions. Put simply, survivor bias produces
an inexact sample (样本), causing you to jump to wrong conclusions.
To reduce the effect of survivor bias, you should look for ways to gather a typical sample from
the entire population, not just a few success stories. While this may call for more time and effort, but
you’ll get better results.
32. The author explain survivor bias in education by _____.
A.1Giving examples. B. Examining data.
C. Describing facts. D. Comparing opinions.
33. Why might medical studies give an overly positive view of treatments?
A. They include patients of all ages. B. They often focus on successful cases.
C. They only assess one special illness. D. They record older patients frequently.
34. What may happen if you have a survivor bias?
A..You will be more likely to survive in difficult situations.
B..You will assess the possibility of failure and quit your project.
C..You will take all factors into consideration before making a final decision.
D..You will reach a mistaken conclusion and make a wrong decision.
35. What does the author suggest readers do to avoid survivor bias?
A. Leave out the famous historic cases. B. Collect a wide enough range of samples.
C. Focus on those well-known examples. D. Choose some successful and inspiring stories.
