Although English is not as old as Chinese, it is spoken by many people around the world every day. English speakers are always creating new words, and we are often able to know where most words come from.
Sometimes, however, no one may really know where a word comes from. Did you ever think about why hamburgers (汉堡包) are called hamburgers, especially when they are not made with ham (火腿)? About a hundred years ago, some men went to America from Europe. They came from a big city in Germany called Hamburg. They did not speak good English, but they ate good food. When some Americans saw them eating round pieces of beef, they asked the Germans what it was. The Germans did not understand the question and answered, “We come from Hamburg.” One of these Americans owned a restaurant, and had an idea. He cooked some round pieces of beef like those which the men from Hamburg ate. Then he put each between two pieces of bread and started selling them. Such bread came to be called “hamburgers”. Today “hamburgers” are sold in many countries around the world.
Whether this story is true or not, it certainly is interesting. Knowing why any word has a certain meaning is interesting, too. This reason, for most English words, can be found in any large English dictionary.
4. About a hundred years ago, Hamburg was .
A. An American city B. a Chinese city
C. the name of a village D. a city in Germany
5 Hamburgers are mainly made with .
A. beef, bread B. only made with beef
C. bread, potato D. only made with bread
6. According to the writer, which of the following can often be found in any large English dictionary?
A. Where all the new words come from
B. Where those Germans came from
C. The reason why an English word has a certain meaning
D. The reason why English is spoken around the world
7. According to the story, the word “hamburger” comes from .
A. China because it has a long history
B. England because Germans don’t speak good English
C the round pieces of beef which those people from Hamburg were eating
D. English speakers because they always create new words
C
At this time of year, thousands of British tourists are heading to the Austrian ski slopes (斜坡), attracted not just by the snow tracks (跑道) but also by the pretty villages, great food and drink, and, the Austrian lifesaver for parents, the kid-friendly hotel. Confusing, then, a recent survey by InterNations on Expat-Friendly Places has put Austria the worst country in the world (well, out of 53 countries) for “local friendliness”.
As a frequent visitor to Austria, I must admit being confused. I’ve had many experiences there, but none that I would call the least bit unfriendly. Take my most recent trip there last weekend for example. Vienna in winter is beautiful and, if you’re lucky, you may have some snow — despite which, the transport systems such as buses and subways continue to work well. Food markets here open early and I began at the most famous, the Naschmarkt, with its two main streets, one for restaurants, the other for food stalls (摊位). But instead of the expected rude traders, I was surrounded by encouraging smiles! So far, so friendly.
So, if Austrians are funny, how can they also be unfriendly? This is the place, after all, where they invented a best-selling chocolate known as Mozart balls (after their most outstanding composer), ballet for horses (at Vienna’s Spanish Riding School), and the favourite night-time snack of sausages.
Did I say formal? That is, perhaps, at the root of the misunderstanding. Austrians like going to balls and wearing their traditional clothes. They are super polite and helpful to lost tourists. That’s not to say you can’t anger an Austrian. For example, being late is not to be allowed.
My point is that you get the best of the two countries closest to them: Everything works (as in Germany) and they like to have fun (as in Italy). And I’m not alone in my opinion. According to the Global Liveability Index, Vienna is the best city to live in on the planet and it has worn that particular crown for the past 10 years. Perhaps, in this situation, the statistics (统计学) have rather missed the point.
8. Why are British tourists mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. To show they are the friendliest tourists.
B. To interest us with a confusing situation.
C. To introduce the topic of tourism.
D. To compare them with Austrians.
9. What happened to the author at the Naschmarkt?
A. He came across polite traders.
B. He lost his way at the food markets.
C He was inspired to smile even in winter.
D. He was confused by the transportation systems.
10. What do we know about Austrians?
A. They are serious. B. They are unfriendly.
C. They like to be on time. D. They like formal uniforms.
11. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To call on Austrians to be more friendly.
B. To attract tourists to pay a visit to Austria.
C. To explain his idea of international relations.
D. To show Austria doesn’t deserve its bad name.
D
Doctors say you had better use it before you lose it. The more you sit each day, the more chance you have of getting sick.
Richard Rosenkranz of Kansas State University was among the researchers. He said people who sat for long periods were at great risk of diseases when compared with those who sat less. He said that was especially true for some chronic (慢性的) diseases.
Richard Rosenkranz studied the relationship between sitting and chronic diseases in middle-aged Australian men. He worked with researchers from the University of Western Sydney. They examined the health records of more than 63,000 men from New South Wales. The men were between the ages of 45 and 65. The men reported about what diseases they had, or did not have. And they kept record of the amount of time each day that they sat.
The study also showed that exercising every morning for 30 minutes did not reduce the health risk if you spend the next eight hours sitting at the desk. Mr. Rosenkranz said it was important to make sure you exercise. But he said it was also important to find ways not to sit so much during the day.
Many jobs today require sitting and working at the desk all day. James Levine works at the Mayo Clinic in the United Sates. He suggests working while standing at high table some of the time instead of sitting at a desk. Dr. Levine also suggests standing while using the telephone or eating. Or he advises walking with the people you work with for an on-foot meeting. And he notes that if you spend more time on your feet, you may have muscle activity that helps burn fats and sugars in your body.
12. What does the underlined sentence in the first paragraph imply?
A. Doctors should treat all the patients well.
B. Doctors should make use of every method.
C. One should value his health before he loses it.
D. One should depend on himself to keep healthy.
13. How did Richard Rosenkranz make the study?
A. By examining some records and reports.
B. By making some laboratory experiments.
C. By talking with the doctors and patients.
D. By watching the men’s daily performance.
14. According to Dr. Levine, in order to avoid the harm of long-time sitting, what should people do?
A. Exercise more often. B. Change their jobs.
C. Stay away from the desk. D. Stand or walk more.
15. Where does this text probably come from?
A. A fashion magazine. B. A health magazine.
C. A biology textbook. D. A life guide.

It was exam time at Marc’s school. Every day, their teachers gave them loads of homework and told them the test was very important and that they ought to spare no effort to perform well in it. Everyone followed the teachers’ instructions and made preparations for it, except Marc. He just turned a deaf ear to it. He thought he would rather play football than study.
His mum and dad repeated the importance of revision for exams over and over again. They told him that he should be working hard preparing for the test. But the weather was sunny and he thought he had better things to do.
“Shall we go to the park?” he said to his friend Huck one afternoon. “It’s a nice day. We could play football and kick around.” Huck shook his head. “I’m supposed to review my lessons,” he said. “I’m going home to do some math.”
Marc was amazed. “You’d rather do math than play football?”
“Math is important. Besides, my mum says she will buy me a mountain bike if I do well in the math exam.”
“That’s crazy,” said Marc. Huck shrugged (耸肩) and replied, “Wait until I beat you in the test and you will watch me riding past on my mountain bike!”
“You won’t beat me,” said Marc.
“Oh yes, I will.”
“Oh no, you won’t! That will never happen. Just wait and see!”
For the first time ever, Marc wanted to perform well. He couldn’t bear it if his friend came top and he did badly. So when he got home, he opened his math book. But there was so much to do. All of a sudden, he felt like he’d forgotten everything he had learned that year! He didn’t know where to start. When his sister Lily came in, he was sitting expressionlessly by the desk, just staring out of the window.

He cooked some round pieces of beef like those which the men from Hamburg ate. Then he put each between two pieces of bread and started selling them. Such bread came to be called “hamburgers”.
8 Why are British tourists mentioned in paragraph 1?
C. He was inspired to smile even in winter.
B 9. A 10. C 11. D

Confusing, then, a recent survey by InterNations on Expat-Friendly Places has put Austria the worst country in the world (well, out of 53 countries) for ‘local friendliness’.

Perhaps, in this situation, the statistics (统计学) have rather missed the point.(我的意思是,你能从与他们最接近的两个国家中得到最好的东西:一切都很顺利(就像在德国一样),而且他们喜欢玩乐(就像在意大利一样)。

And he notes that if you spend more time on your feet, you may have muscle activity that helps burn fats and sugars in your body.

take...to do... 故填to grow。
固定短语“add to或add into”表示“添加到……中”的意思,这里说明根桥被添加到世界遗产名录之中。故填to或into。
故填This。

As a high school freshman, I am honored to have entered a new chapter in my life. After experiencing ups and downs, I have learned a lot of great value.
Our class was like a big family and I got along well with my classmates. Moreover, my teachers were very enthusiastic and friendly. They taught me much knowledge and told me how to behave well. To be honest, my senior high school life was very tiring but I really enjoyed it. So I hope that the students who will go to senior high school put study in the first place. They had better consolidate what they have learned in a day. Except for study, they can also take part in some contests to enrich their school life.

It was exam time at Marc’s school. Every day their teachers gave them loads of homework and told them the test was very important and that they ought to spare no effort to perform well in it.

On the day of the exam, Marc went to school with great confidence.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】“You don’t look happy, Marc. What’s wrong?” she said. Explaining what had happened, especially the bet between him and Huck, he told Lily his decision. He wanted to make careful preparations for the exam, but ran into difficulties with math. He was at a loss what to do next. “Don’t worry! I’ll help you. Just be confident!” replied Lily. The following days, Marc worked very hard and made great progress. Gradually, his confidence grew and he could solve math problems with ease, with the instructions appearing in his brain as if the teacher was standing at his side .
On the day of the exam, Marc went to school with great confidence. He met Huck in the classroom, who looked delighted as if he was bound to win. But Marc didn’t care. When the exam began, Marc answered all the questions as best as he could. Several days later, the result came out. It turned out that Marc did much better than Huck. “Well done,” said Mom. “We could go to see a movie to celebrate, and you can choose one.” “I think Lily should choose,” said Marc. “I would never have gained such a great achievement without her help and encouragement .”
选择:choose/make a choice/make an option
增加了信心:grow confidence/build up confidence/double confidence
解决:solve/work out/tackle
充满信心:be confident/be full of confidence
