To inspire students to explore the endless world of knowledge through literature, our school’s English newspaper recently held a remarkable reading and sharing event themed “Lifelong Learning”.
The event kicked off with a series of presentations by students who shared books that had profoundly influenced their perspectives on learning. In addition, teachers were invited to provide guidance on learning effectively and continuously. The highlight of the event was a guest lecture by a famous author who shared her personal journey of continuous learning and how it had shaped her career and life.
This event not only broadens my understanding of the importance of lifelong learning but also arouses a passion within me to seek knowledge in every aspect of life. Therefore, I am determined to keep reading to become a better version of myself.

From this moment onward, he reached out to the thieves, offering help and guidance. Over time, Leosson’s approach with empathy began to yield results. Many bike thieves found themselves being understood for the first time and started to return bikes voluntarily. Some even joined Leosson in his mission, assisting him in locating lost or stolen bikes. The community started to change as more people saw the impact of compassion over confrontation. Leosson’s attitude inspired others to look beyond the crimes and see the person behind the actions.
Now when somebody loses their bike, they will turn to Leosson’s Facebook page. The page has become a community hub, with locals actively helping each other identify and recover stolen property. Leosson has not only reduced bike theft rates but has also united the community with a common purpose. The city not only became safer but also more connected, proving that understanding and kindness could indeed spark positive change.

This year, my two oldest sons asked me to sign them up for piano lessons. For certain reasons, I decided it would also be a good time for me to take up the piano again, after 30 years.
As a child, I learned not just the piano, but the cello. I played in two orchestras and sang in the school choir. No one forced me to do any of it, but it wasn’t quite a free choice either. When you are the approval-addicted daughter of an over-invested mother, no one needs to apply force. My mom and I were well matched partners in the dance of unspoken expectation and approval-seeking. I did her forcing for her.
For my mother, my musical industriousness wasn’t so much about achievement as identity. She was American by birth, and after marrying my university professor father and moving to London, she spent a decade working to be accepted into the impatient, fraught world of British intellectual society.
In this environment, a diligent daughter lugging a giant cello was a tiny amount of cultural capital, a ticket to belonging. As much as anything could, music made me into the person my mother needed me to be, so that she could be the person she needed to be, in order to escape who she actually was.
And for my part, although I never truly believed that my mother’s love was conditional, I did have the suspicion that there was a performance- related bonus in there.
It was foolish to think that taking up the piano at the same time as my own children would be emotionally uncomplicated. Or perhaps the complication was exactly why I sought it out. Somehow, the piano lessons turn me into both my childhood self, seeking my mother’s approval, and into my mother herself, putting the same high expectations on my own children.
My mother was lucky in that I was temperamentally (性情地) suited to the role she assigned me. My sons are not so much so. They are rambunctious and restless, not wired for lengthy sessions of sitting still and reflecting well on me.
Unconditional love may be at the defining heart of parenthood, but sometimes it can feel impossible to accommodate unconditional love to the worldly practices of day-to-day parenting. The whole job seems set up for conditionality: It would be dishonest to pretend that we have no stake in wanting our children to reflect our own values and preferences.
I’m disappointed when my sons won’t play their role in the script I have written for them, but deep down, I’m also a little thrilled. They are maddeningly, gloriously resistant to the pressure. A secret part of me is delighted by their raging demands for full personhood — beyond my projections and hopes and fears. By the life they claim.
24.The underlined sentence in paragraph two means ______.
A.the author demanded to learn musical instruments out of pure love
B.the author forced her mum to sign her up for piano lessons against her will
C.the author’s mom pushed her to learn musical instruments for her own sake
D.the author offered to learn musical instruments to obtain her mom’s approval
25.The author’s mother think of the author’s musical industriousness as ______.
A.a symbol more of family achievement than of social identity
B.a way for her to fit into the British intellectual society at that time
C.proof of her ability to be a qualified mother in front of her husband
D.a result of her selfless cultivation more than the author’s own diligence
26.Which of the following is TRUE from the author’s perspective?
A.She doesn’t care about her sons’ levels of playing musical instruments.
B.She has a mixed feeling towards her sons’ reluctance to practise musical instruments.
C.She feels sorrowful because her sons are unlikely skilled at playing musical instruments.
D.She is still convinced that her sons could be as talented on musical instruments as she was.
27.Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?
A.Can Musical Talents Really be Inherited?
B.Can We Really Force Our Children to Love Music?
C.Can We Really Love Our Children Unconditionally?
D.Can Playing Instruments Help Us Fit into Intellectual Society?

industriousness、fraught、rambunctious、stake、projections
1. “As much as anything could, music made me into the person my mother needed me to be, so that she could be the person she needed to be, in order to escape who she actually was.”(在最大程度上,音乐把我塑造成了母亲需要我成为的人,这样她就能成为她需要成为的人,以便逃离她实际上的样子。)
分析:该句使用了 “as much as anything could” 这种比较结构,强调音乐的作用。句子中有多个目的状语从句 “so that she could be...in order to escape...”,层层递进地说明了音乐对作者和母亲的影响。
2. “It was foolish to think that taking up the piano at the same time as my own children would be emotionally uncomplicated. Or perhaps the complication was exactly why I sought it out.”(认为和自己的孩子同时学习钢琴在情感上不会复杂是愚蠢的。
分析:这是一个复合句,“It was foolish to think that...” 是主句,“that taking up...would be emotionally uncomplicated” 是宾语从句。后面的 “Or perhaps the complication was exactly why I sought it out.”
3. “They are maddeningly, gloriously resistant to the pressure. A secret part of me is delighted by their raging demands for full personhood — beyond my projections and hopes and fears. By the life they claim.”(他们令人抓狂又令人赞叹地抵抗着压力。

Mountain chickadees (山雀) have some of the strongest spacial memories in the animal kingdom. New research reveals the genes involved and sheds light on how a changing climate may influence the evolution of this particular skill.
In a new study, researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder and the University of Nevada, Reno identify nearly a hundred genes associated with the birds’ spacial memory, or ability to recall the locations of objects. The paper also suggests a potential balance may exist between having a solid long- term memory and being able to quickly remove old memories to form new ones.
Taylor, the director of CU Boulder’s Mountain Research Station and his associates at the University of Nevada, Reno, lead by biologist professor Vladimir Pravosudov, designed a novel technique to assess the spacial memory of wild mountain chickadees. They hung various feeder groups in California’s Sierra Nevada mountains, each with eight seed-filled bird feeders. Each feeder has a gate equipped with a radio frequency reader capable of detecting a tag placed on chickadees by researchers. The scientists then configured (设定) each gate to only open to specific birds, forcing the chickadees to remember which feeders would open to them. Pravosudov and his team then counted how many times each chickadee landed on the wrong feeders before they recalled the right one.
Using blood samples, the CU Boulder team sequenced (测定序列) the whole genome of 162 tagged chickadees, resulting in the largest database ever collected for examining the genetic basis of chickade’s cognitive ability. The team discovered 97 genes involved in chickadee spacial learning and memory by comparing the birds’ genomes to their performance on the feeder test.
The findings could help biologists better understand the evolution of spacial memory in animals, including humans. “Chickadees are impressive birds,” said Scott Taylor. “They can remember tens of thousands of locations where they store food across an entire winter and a new set of those the next winter. Their spacial memory is much more developed than many other birds that don’t have to have this strategy to survive cold winters.”
28.What do we know about mountain chickadees’ spacial memories?
A.They are linked with a hundred relevant genes. B.They maintain a good balance in locating objects.
C.They are considered powerful in the animal world. D.They might account for the slow change of climate.
29.What can a radio frequency reader do in the test?
A.Lower the error rate of the chickadees. B.Count the times each chickadee failed.
C.Collect the food information of a feeder. D.Identify the chickadee landing on a feeder.
30.What does paragraph 4 focus on about the study?
A.Blood sampling. B.Genes involved.
C.Ability comparing. D.Data gathered.
31.What does Scott Taylor imply in the last paragraph?
A.Chickadees possess amazing evolutionary capability.
B.Many other birds should improve their spacial memory.
C.Food storage is vital to the survival of animals in winter.
D.Chickadees’ spacial memory carries them through winter.

A study led by UC Riverside (UCR) atmospheric scientists predicts that unchecked carbon emissions will force tropical rains to shift northward in the coming decades, which would profoundly impact the regions near the Earth's equator.
The northward rain shift is caused by complex atmospheric changes. These changes are driven by carbon emissions, which in turn influence the formation of tropical convergence (汇集) zones. Those zones are essentially atmospheric engines that drive about a third of the world’s rainfall, which Antony P. Thomas, a professor of climate change and sustainability at UCR reported in a paper published in the journal Nature Climate Change.
Tropical regions on either side the equator, such as central African nations, northern South America, and Pacific island states would be the most affected. Major crops in these regions include coffee, cocoa, palm oil, bananas, sugarcane, tea, mangoes, and pineapples.
Tropical rainforests can have as much as 14 feet of rain a year. “The rainfall change is enormous,” Antony said. “It's a very heavy rainfall region. So, a small shift will cause big changes in the economy of the societies. It will affect many regions.”
Antony and his colleagues used advanced computer models to predict the atmospheric influence of carbon dioxide emissions from continued burning of fossil fuels and other sources.” This climate model included many components of the atmosphere, ocean, sea ice, and land. All these components are interacting with each other,” he said. “Basically, we try to simulate the real world. In the model, we can increase our carbon dioxide emissions from pre-industrial levels to much higher levels.”
The analysis accounted for how carbon emissions influence the amount of radiant energy at the top of atmosphere. It also considered the changes in sea ice, water vapor and cloud formation. These and other factors resulted in conditions that push the rain- forming convergence zones northward by as much as 0.2 degrees on average.
32.What may be the main cause of the rain shift?
A.The rainforests. B.Carbon emissions.
C.The Earth's equator. D.Economic growth.
33.How does Antony feel about the rain shift?
A.Confused. B.Grateful. C.Worried. D.Indifferent.
34.Which word can best describe the study?
A.Comprehensive. B.Widespread. C.Fruitful. D.Historic.
35.What can be inferred from the text?
A.The rain shift is unrelated to human activities.
B.The rain shift threatens equatorial agriculture.
C.The study’s computer models were not precise enough.
D.The impact of the rain shift will be limited to remote areas.

Maybe you are probably getting an earful (训斥) from your inner voice. 36 . Here are several ways to change your self- talk script and to use your inner voices to perform better.
Listen critically to your inner critic
In high- pressure situations, self- talk is often critical. Instead of thinking deliberately and logically, our inner voices are caused by emotion. That influences everything from how we talk to ourselves to our behaviors. 37 . And when your inner voices start to fill with words of frustration and discouragement, pause the conversation as you consider ways to change it.
Create psychological distance from yourself
One effective way to manage stress is to create psychological distance. This can be achieved by using second- or third- person pronouns when referring to the situation. Asking yourself,“ Why are you feeling so stressed?” is one way to create the psychological distance you need to regulate emotion. 38 .
Fit your conversation to your goal
39 . Instructional self- talk like“ shoulders back” or“ keep the left arm straight” works to improve technique. Motivational self-talk such as“ you’ve got this” or“ keep going” can help with confidence, strength, or endurance. It’s important to be aware of the type of self-talk you are using and make sure it aligns with your goals and needs.
40
Demeaning or negative self- talk is only going to increase your stress and hold you back. Instead, speak compassionately to yourself — just as you would to a friend. Recreate negative messages to include positive content. “I am not good at this.” can be changed to“ Relax. You are prepared for this.” “I don’t know what to say.” can be replaced by“ Remember to smile and ask good questions.”
A.Treat yourself as a friend
B.Make as many friends as possible
C.Using instructional language is appropriate
D.Different types of self- talk work best for specific goals
E.So your first step is to listen critically to what you are saying to yourself
F.Often, negative comments in your head make it difficult for you to succeed
G.This way you might find your task an interesting challenge instead of a threat

Reykjavík, capital city of Iceland, is one of the safest cities in the world, holding the third position in a 2023 ranking, with Iceland being the world’s safest country. And thanks to Bjartmar Leosson, a local bus driver, it is becoming even safer. The city is largely dependent on bikes for transport. Since Leosson began his service of rescuing bikes, he has seen its rate of bike thefts drop significantly. Theft fell from 569 in 2021 to 508 in 2022 and 404 in the first11 months of 2023.
In 2019, Leosson noticed a sharp rise in bike thefts in Reykjavik. Rather than accept that the bike was gone forever, he decided to take matters into his own hands and started to track down the bikes and return them to their rightful owners. However, what started as a heated decision to bring justice turned into a cause that had a tremendously positive butterfly effect on the town.
The 44-year-old has helped to return hundreds of bikes over the past 4 years and developed a reputation among Reykjavik s cyclist community and even potential bike thieves as the “bike whisperer”. His Facebook page has more than 14,500 members and helps people track down more than just lost bikes. His page extends to people who have lost tools, cars and other items of high value.
Initially Leosson would confront the thieves with anger. However, over time, he realised that the vast majority of the thefts were driven out of addictions and other issues. He went from feeling negatively towards the thieves to understanding their feelings and problems:
“I was very angry, and they were angry — it was very rough at first. But then I started to think: OK, it doesn’t matter. I can scream until I’m blue in the face, but nothing’s going to change. So I decided to try to level with them and just talk to them.”

【答案】17.B 18.B 19.A 20.B
Hunting is part of the culture in many countries around the world, including right here in the European Union. Recently, some African countries have been widely criticized for allowing tourists to kill lions. In cases where the animals are endangered, almost everyone agrees that this type of hunting should be banned. However, people are much more divided about a recent situation in the U. S. The populations of white-tailed deer have gotten out of control throughout the country because no animals kill them for food. Hunters want to increase the number of white-tailed deer they’re already allowed to shoot. Because the deer cause car accidents, the hunters think they’re actually saving human lives by killing the deer. And the deer are so overpopulated. Animal rights groups say that deer-related accidents are actually caused by hunters who scare the deer onto roads. While that claim is hard to confirm, this one isn’t: the number of deer-related car accidents can’t compare with the 200 hunting-related human deaths every year. Finally, these groups believe that animals should be able to live freely in their environment, without having to worry about being killed. Unfortunately, this last point is hard to argue when so many cows, chickens, and pigs are killed for our dinners. The truth is that hunting is unlikely to stop anytime soon

36.根据空前句“Maybe you are probably getting an earful (训斥) from your inner voice.(也许你可能听到了内心训斥的声音)”提到你可能从内心的声音中听到了长时间的数落;空后“Here are several ways to change your self- talk script and to use your inner voices to perform better.(这里有几个方法来改变你的自我对话脚本,用你内心的声音来表现得更好。)” F项中的“ negative comments in your head”与空前句中的“ an earful from your inner voice”相呼应,且其中的“ make it difficult for you to succeed”与空后句中的“ perform better”相呼应。 因此,F选项“Often, negative comments in your head make it difficult for you to succeed(通常,你头脑中的负面评论会让你很难成功)”衔接上下文。故选F。
37.根据后文“And when your inner voices start to fill with words of frustration and discouragement, pause the conversation as you consider ways to change it.(当你内心的声音开始充满沮丧和沮丧时,暂停谈话,考虑改变它的方法)”中提取的关系词“And”可知,设空处与空后句构成并列关系。空前句“In high- pressure situations, self- talk is often critical. Instead of thinking deliberately and logically, our inner voices are caused by emotion. That influences everything from how we talk to ourselves to our behaviors.(在压力很大的情况下,自言自语往往是至关重要的。我们内心的声音是由情感引起的,而不是有意识地、合乎逻辑地思考。这影响了从我们如何自言自语到我们的行为)”与内心的声音的消极影响相关,空后句与应对内心的声音的做法有关。根据设空处与空后句的并列关系可知,设空处锁定在E项。E项还与空前句构成因果关系,且该项中的“critically”是对小标题中的“critically”和段首句中的“critical”的原词及同根词复现。E选项“So your first step is to listen critically to what you are saying to yourself(因此,你的第一步是批判性地倾听你对自己说的话)”符合语境。故选E。
38.根据空前内容“One effective way to manage stress is to create psychological distance. This can be achieved by using second- or third- person pronouns when referring to the situation. Asking yourself,“ Why are you feeling so stressed?” is one way to create the psychological distance you need to regulate emotion.(管理压力的一个有效方法是创造心理距离。这可以通过使用第二人称或第三人称代词来实现。问自己:“为什么你感到这么有压力?”是一种创造心理距离的方法,你需要这种距离来调节情绪)”提到应对压力的一个有效方法是创造心理距离,并举例说明“问自己‘为什么你感到压力如此之大?’”是一种创造调节情绪所需的心理距离的方法。因此,设空处位于段尾,应能承接上文,与空前句提到的创造心理距离的方法相关,G选项“This way you might find your task an interesting challenge instead of a threat(这样你会发现你的任务是一个有趣的挑战而不是威胁)”说明了使用该方法的好处,且其中的“ This way”指代的正是空前句中的“Asking yourself, “Why are you feeling so stressed?””。故选G。
因此,设空处也应与此相关,故将答案锁定在D选项“Different types of self- talk work best for specific goals(不同类型的自言自语对特定的目标效果最好)”,其中的“goals”是对小标题中的“goal”的同词复现。故选D。
40.根据本段内容“Demeaning or negative self- talk is only going to increase your stress and hold you back. Instead, speak compassionately to yourself — just as you would to a friend. Recreate negative messages to include positive content. “I am not good at this.” can be changed to“ Relax. You are prepared for this.” “I don’t know what to say.” can be replaced by“ Remember to smile and ask good questions.”(贬低或消极的自言自语只会增加你的压力,阻碍你前进。相反,你应该同情地对自己说话——就像对朋友说话一样。重新创造负面信息以包含积极内容。“我不擅长这个。可以改成“放轻松。”你已经准备好了。”“我不知道该说什么。可以用“记得微笑,问好问题”来代替)”可知,本段建议人们不要进行贬低性的或消极的自我对话,而要像对待朋友那样对自己说积极的话,A选项“Treat yourself as a friend(把自己当成朋友)”能很好地概括本段主旨。故选A。

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
From this moment onward he reached out to the thieves, offering help and guidance.

Now when somebody loses their bike, they will turn to Leósson’s Facebook page.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
