Watching lanterns is a great event. You see lanterns in any sizes and shapes you can imagine, from animals to plants and flowers. To make this activity more fun, people paste (粘贴) riddles (谜语) on the lanterns. “Ten plus ten, still is ten, ten minus ten, again is ten.” Guess what? It is a pair of gloves. In some places, people like releasing sky lanterns, which are called Kongming lanterns. A sky lantern is a small hot air balloon made of paper, with an opening at the bottom, where there is a small fire source. When the bright lights fly high in the sky, people bless family members and make wishes. Releasing river lights is also a way to bless for each other. Usually, the lights are in the shape of a lotus (荷花). In old times, the Lantern Festival was also romantic. At that time, young girls were not allowed to go out very often except during certain festivals. Therefore, looking at lanterns gave young people a chance to meet each other. A line from Xin Qiji, a poet during the Song Dynasty, shows this: “Anxiously, I searched for her in thousands, hundreds of ways. Suddenly I turned, and there she was in the declining light.” 8. However, since the 1990s, the last true wilderness on the planet is becoming an increasingly popular destination for tourists. Now, a new study shows that the visitors may be bringing harmful bacteria (细菌) which could reduce the area’s native bird population. Researchers believed that the Antarctic creatures were not affected by the danger due to the continent’s extreme weather. However, microbiologist Martà Cerdà-Cuéllar didn’t believe this was true. She and some colleagues decided to examine samples from Antarctic birds for evidence of human bacteria. To ensure the waste was not polluted, the scientists had to collect it from the birds themselves. This was no easy task. If they missed catching a skua at first go, the bird never came close again. It took the scientists four years, from 2008 to 2011, to collect fecal (粪便) samples of 666 adult birds from 24 local species. The results of their study showed the presence of several types of human bacteria in the bird waste. “While we should do as much as possible to reduce transmission (传播), it’s hard to believe that we can stop tourism and science at these sites, and so it is hard to believe that humans won’t continue to transmit pathogens (病原体),” said Kyle Elliott. Experts, including González-Solís, believe the only way to prevent the destruction of the birds, is to introduce stricter regulations or, at least, obey the ones already in place. For example, while the Antarctica Treaty states clearly visitors carry their waste back home to protect the original environment, the regulation is rarely obeyed. Hopefully, officials will take steps to protect the easily injured birds as soon as possible. 12. What can be said about scientists finding the waste from the birds? A. This was not an easy task. B. This proved their conclusion. C. Their tempers contributed a lot. D. They found polluted human bacteria. 13. How does Kyle Elliott feel when mentioning reducing tourism? A. Hopeful. B. Difficult. C. Possible. D. Delighted. 14. What’s author’s suggestions to protect Antarctic birds ? A. Make new strict rules. B. Take measures as soon as possible. C. Quit the Antarctic Treaty D. Encourage officials to strengthen cooperation. 15. In which part of a newspaper is this text probably found? A. Technology. B. Life. C. Art. D. Science. 【答案】12. A 13. B 14. B 15. 根据第二段中“To ensure the waste was not polluted, the scientists had to collect it from the birds themselves. Surrounded by pet owners and their beloved pets, Malia had an idea that would change lives. Why not create bandannas, a kind of colorful scarf, for dogs and cats and use them to support animal shelters? With great passion and the support of her grandmother, Martinez turned a corner of their home into a craft room. Her grandmother helped her when she needed to iron things like that. Together, Martinez and her grandmother made many lovely bandannas, ranging in different styles and sizes. But Martinez’s goal went far beyond sewing lovely bandannas. She began donating her creations to shelters like Forever Paws in Fall River, hoping it would attract a potential family. ”When I went to see the dogs in the animal shelters, it was kind of sad. So I thought if we got them a bandanna, they would look cuter like ‘Oh this one is cute. Maybe I can adopt this one’ and they would get a home and have the food and shelter they need, said Martinez. “And I just thought it’d be fun to maybe have an impact on that.” Besides donating bandannas, Martinez began selling them through word-of-mouth and at pop-up events. Ranging from $3 to $7, money from her sales is now donated to shelters too. A few weeks ago, she donated more than $ 200 to the Kingston Animal Shelter. “They were happy and really appreciative, which made me feel really good inside,” said Martinez. “It makes me happy to see how it’s impacted the people and dogs.” 4. C Do you love seeing beautiful lanterns outside? The best time to do this is during the Lantern Festival, which falls on the 15th day of the first lunar (阴历) month. This year it is on Feb22, marking the end of Spring Festival celebrations. Lanterns are a big part of the festival. One story says that the bright lanterns show respect for gods. Another says that people light lanterns to celebrate the declining (消退的) darkness of winter. When do people celebrate the Lantern Festival? A. On the 22nd day of the first lunar month. B. On the 15th day of the first solar month. C. On the 22nd day of February every year. D. On the 15th day of the first lunar month. 9 Which of the following statements about the Lantern Festival is TRUE? A. People paste riddles to show off their knowledge. B. Young girls were not allowed to go out on the day. C. People light lanterns to drive animals away. D People make wishes when releasing lights. 10. How do you feel about the line from Xin Qiji? A. Sad. B. Scared. C. Romantic. D. Anxious. 11. What would be the best title for the text? A. The Origin of the Lantern Festival B. River Lights on the Lantern Festival C. Celebrations of the Lantern Festival D. A day to Guess Lantern Riddles D Thanks to its cold environment, Antarctica (南极洲) remained largely untouched by humans for thousands of years. 15 In which part of a newspaper is this text probably found? A. Technology. B. Life. C. Art. D. Science. 第二节 七选五(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Your teen years are a time to learn about yourself and start thinking about your future.
