Dad loved basketball and hoped that one day I would play the game. He taught me a lot, and I was pretty good until the accident. We were on the highway. Our little car spun off the road, squealing (发出长而尖的声音) as Dad tried to bring it under control. Then everything was suddenly dark. Th next thing I remembered was being told I wasn’t going to walk again.
Mom and I learned to live with it. Dad took it hard. “Sometimes I think he blames himself,” Mom said. “Whenever he sees you in the wheelchair he wants to put it out of his mind.”
One day Mr. Evans, an elder in our neighborhood, asked me if I wanted to join a wheelchair basketball team he was starting. When I told Mom, she was all for it, but Dad just looked at me and mumbled (嘟哝) something. I didn’t know what to make of Dad’s reaction, but I knew I wanted t play.
I began my first practice on a Friday afternoon. What surprised me most was that I found Dad sitting in the stand and watched us go through our drills. We finished our regular practice, and Mr. Evans motioned for my father to come down to the court.
“Jim, I happen to know that you played pro basketball,” Mr. Evans said. “I think you can show the kids some fundamentals.” Dad agreed he would like to give it a try.
We practiced the whole summer. Dad came every day. “I thought you were terrible at first,” he said one afternoon. “But I think you can play with Madison (a very good teen wheelchair basketball team) now.”
Dad only comes to practice once in a while now, but he comes to the games when they’re on the weekend. I didn’t want to push him because 1 liked him coming to practice, and Mom didn’t mind at all.
“Jim, if you were in a wheelchair,” she asked, “do you think you could play as well as Chris?” Dad was on his laptop and looked over the screen at Mom and mumbled something. I figured he was saying that there was no way he could play as well as me in a wheelchair, but I didn’t ask him to repeat it.
24. How might Jim feel about his son’s disability?
A. Angry. B. Sympathetic. C. Guilty. D. Confused.
25. What was Jim’s initial reaction to the idea of his son playing wheelchair basketball?

If we jump in the air as high as possible, we can stay off the ground for about half a second. Michael Jordan could stay airborne for almost one second while ski jumpers are able to do that for five to seven seconds as they travel about the length of a football field through the air. So how do they do this?
Three major concepts from physics are at play in the ski jump: gravity, lift and drag. Gravity pulls any object in flight down toward the ground and there is nothing athletes can do to lessen its effect. But athletes also interact with the air as they move. It is this interaction that can produce lift, an upwards force produced by air pushing on an object. If the force produced from lift roughly balances the force of gravity, the object can fly. The same interaction also produces drag. It resists the forward motion of any object and slows it down.
In the ski jump, jumpers start high up on a slope and then ski downhill to generate speed. Just before they reach the end of the slope, they jump. Once jumpers are in the air, the fun physics begins. They use careful body positioning to maximize lift while / minimizing drag. To do this, they adjust their skis and body nearly parallel to the ground and place their skis in a V-shape just outside the form of the body. This position increases the surface area that generates lift and puts them in the ideal angle of attack that will also maximize lift. As drag reduces the speed of the jumpers, lift decreases and gravity continues to pull on them. They will begin to fall faster and faster until they land.
As you tune into the Olympics to wonder at the physical power of the athletes, take a moment to consider also their mastery of the concepts of physics.
28. What does the underlined word "this" in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A. Staying longer in the air.
B. Traveling forward slower.
C. Falling down the hill faster.
D. Jumping higher than average.
29. How can ski jumpers fly in the air according to Paragraph 2?
A. They make use of the interaction with air.

Next time you are struggling with the crossword, try putting the kettle on. Drinking a cup of tea can improve creativity, a study suggests.
Researchers gave men and women either tea or water and then asked them to complete a word association game, which was used to measure a form of creativity known as convergent thinking (聚合思维).
In the game, the participants were given sets of words such as “same, tennis, head” and asked to find a meaningful link between them. The answer, in this case, would be “match”. After analysing the results in a way that ruled out the potential effects of a person’s intelligence and language ability, the researchers, from Peking University in China, found that those who drank the tea performed significantly better in the word association game. The tea drinkers scored an average of 13.89 in the word association game compared with 12. 94 of the water drinkers.
The researchers said it was not clear why tea has this beneficial effect. Tea contains caffeine and theanine, which can improve attention, but the 100 participants in the study drank only a small amount of tea — 90ml on average and carried out the tests very soon after consuming it, meaning any effect would have been ignored. “This result showed that the tea drinking event itself — rather than the biological components of tea — played a positive role,” the researchers said.
“Previous research has found that people tend to associate tea drinking with a specific set of personality traits, such as being smart, creative, elegant, confident, and stable. It may be that when participants are stimulated (刺激) by tea,the mental representation of a tea drinker is also activated, and they unconsciously think that they should be smarter and more creative,” they added. “Future research should focus on specific mechanisms (机制) and clarify which variables moderate the impact of tea consumption on convergent thinking.”
32. What did the participants have to do in the study?
A Pair the words with each other. B. Guess the meaning of the words.
C. Find a connection between the words. D. Tell the differences among the words.
33. What helped a participant get a higher score according to the researchers?
A. The action of drinking tea itself. B. The participant’s intelligence.
C. The participant’s language ability. D. The biological components of tea.
34. What can be inferred from the previous research?
A. Drinking tea makes people more active. B. Drinking tea is popular among the youth.
C. People tend to drink tea more than before. D. People drinking tea are often thought smart.
35. Which of the following can be the best title of the text?
A. Drinking Tea Is Good for Health B. Drinking Tea Is a Popular Trend
C. Drinking Tea Makes for Creativity D. Drinking Tea Matters a Lot in Life

Why we forget?
Remembering things is an important function of our brain — if we can’t recall how to do something, we can’t survive. If you think about it, there is so much we have to remember — from where we leave our car keys to how we walk. ___36___
Memory allows the brain to store and recall information when required. Our short-term memory can hold a small amount of information for a short time, while our long-term memory can hold an unlimited amount of information for a long time. Our memory is amazing, but why do we still forget things?
It maybe because we are in a rush or we consider it irrelevant at the time. When we do store information, we often make connections with other things, which helps us recall it later. ___37___ It is also possible that memories decline over time. If you don’t perform a task for a long period of time, it can be difficult to recall how to do it. This could be because our memory is full,or that our short-term memory is easier to access.
___38___ Have you ever gone into a room to fetch something only to forget what you wanted when you got there? This is called “The Doorway Effect”. This occurs because we change both the physical and mental environments, moving to a different room and thinking about many different things.
So, if you have a mind like a sieve (筛子) ,it could be because you have too much on your mind. But we do need to keep our memory sharp by continually using it. ___39___That’s when we’re at more risk of getting Alzheimer’s disease.
However, forgetting is not always a bad thing! It would waste cognitive resources if we remembered every detail of the world around us. ___40___
A. That’s something worth remembering!
B. Maybe it’s no surprise that sometimes we are forgetful.
C. But sometimes even our short-term memory can let us down.
D. If you don’t have these connections, then it can be easier to forget.
E. However, it is widely recognized that short-term memory can be improved.
F. We also need some mental relaxation such as listening to some classical music.
G. Beyond our 50s, our brains tend to shrink in volume and our memory begins to decline.

It was my twelfth birthday, and what I really wanted most was a new bicycle. But I knew that my family couldn’t afford one, so I decided to have a bedside table with lockable drawers (抽屉), a safe place to keep my private stuff. With my parents, I went to the charity shop where we found a used dark table. It was old and didn’t look cool, but I thought I would paint it to make it look better.
After we took it home, I was getting ready to paint it. When I pulled the drawers out, I felt something stuck to the back. I reached in all the way, and guess what? A scaled (密封的) bag with some papers in it. When I opened the bag, I realized that the papers were official documents. And, wrapped (包装) in them were a bunch of ten and twenty dollar bills! I found a treasure on my birthday! “Is this some kind of joke?” I said aloud. I went ahead and read the papers, and it turned out to be a will (遗嘱). An old lady was leaving her savings for her son and grandchildren.
My mind was going crazy. “Was I the luckiest twelve-year-old ever? With this money I could buy the coolest bicycle. Who knows?” I began counting. Two thousand dollars! I lay on my bed, starting thinking. What a dilemma (进退两难的窘境)! I wished there were someone I could talk with. Could I keep it and get all kinds of stuff for me and my family? It wouldn’t be too bad for me to keep it…, right? Thoughts ran through my mind. But in fact I really didn’t need someone else to give me the answer.

【原文】M: Sally Myers is a 13-year-old writer whose first book was published last year. Sally, tell us something about how that book came out.
W: Well, I love writing. I'd had a diary for a couple of years. But I never showed people what I wrote. Then, because my pen friend was moving to a new city with her family, just like I'd done the year before, I wrote down some advice for her. She thought it was great and said I should write a little book about it for other kids. So I did.
M: Did anybody help you?
W: Not with the writing. I only showed it to my dad after it was finished. He thought it was good, but he'd tried to stop me sending it to any publishers. He thought I'd feel disappointed if they didn't like it. So I sent it to just one company to see what they'd say.
M: How did you know which company to choose?
W: Well, I just emailed the one that already published that sort of book. The next morning my parents got a phone call from them. They wanted to publish mine.
M: That must have been amazing.
W: Yeah. Mum was really calm on the phone but as soon as she put it down she was like jumping up and down with excitement. She'd told me that this kind of thing just never happened and I'd believed her, so I was too shocked to feel anything at first. Then my dad started worrying about what would happen next. But everything was okay in the end.

29. How can ski jumpers fly in the air according to Paragraph 2?
A. They make use of the interaction with air.
B. They get more forces of gravity than lift.
C. They keep a good balance while skiing.
D. They get rid of the effect of gravity.
30. What does Paragraph 3 mainly discuss about the ski jump?
A. Its training equipment.
B Its safety guidelines.

【导语】这是一篇说明文。主要讲述了滑雪运动员是如何做到在空中停留更长的时间及其基本步骤。
【28题详解】
代词指代题。根据第一段“If we jump in the air as high as possible, we can stay off the ground for about half a second. Michael Jordan could stay airborne for almost one second while ski jumpers are able to do that for five to seven seconds as they travel about the length of a football field through the air. So how do they do this? 故选A项。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“But athletes also interact with the air as they move. It is this interaction that can produce lift, an upwards force produced by air pushing on an object. If the force produced from lift roughly balances the force of gravity, the object can fly. ”(但运动员在运动时也会与空气相互作用。正是这种相互作用可以产生升力,即空气推动物体产生的向上的力。如果升力与重力大致平衡,物体就可以飞行。)可知,滑雪运动员是利用与空气的相互作用在空中飞行。故选A项。
【30题详解】
段落大意题。根据第三段“In the ski jump, jumpers start high up on a slope and then ski downhill to generate speed. They will begin to fall faster and faster until they land.”(在跳台滑雪中,滑雪运动员从斜坡上的高处开始,然后滑下山以产生速度。

A. Pair the words with each other.
Drinking Tea Matters a Lot in Life
【答案】32. C 33. A 34. D 35. C

第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项,
Why we forget?
【答案】36. B 37. D 38. C 39. G 40. A
【解析】

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:1.所续写短文词数应为150左右;
2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。

Paragraph 2: Though surprised, the shop owner helped find out the family’s telephone number.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】I finally made a decision and called my parents into my bedroom. With a trembling voice, I showed them the money and confessed everything that had happened. They listened quietly, their expressions shifting from shock to concern. "We can't keep this, it should be returned," my mom said firmly. My dad nodded in agreement. I felt a pang of disappointment but also a sense of relief. I knew they were right, and I was proud of myself for making the honest choice.
Though surprised, the shop owner helped find out the family’s telephone number. The next day, my parents and I drove to the address provided. When we arrived, we were greeted by an elderly man who seemed confused at first. But as we explained the situation, he hugged us, thanking us repeatedly for our honesty. He insisted on giving me a small reward, a beautiful charm bracelet that had belonged to his mother. It was a symbol of his gratitude and a reminder of the importance of integrity. As we left, I felt a sense of accomplishment and joy that surpassed any material gift, knowing that I had done the right thing.
