While I was growing up, I often heard my teachers say, “Oh, Bob is gifted in math.” While watching the Olympics, my parents would say, “These gymnasts are born with such ability.” Statements like these made me believe people were born with certain talents (天赋) and if they didn’t have a particular one at birth, then they never would. Therefore, I hardly applied myself to math. Nobody told me that if you keep trying and trying, one day a difficult task will seem easy.
Actually, I learned this from my young daughter, Samaya. One day, I was finishing some paperwork and I said, “Oh no, how could I have made that mistake!” Samaya immediately said, “Mum, don’t worry. Mistakes make your brain grow bigger.”
In fact, we all need to be reminded that mistakes or failures are just fine and that they are a huge part of growth and success. However, the common and popular belief is the opposite. We must correct this with our children. We must encourage them to make mistakes because that means they are trying out new ideas.
Billionaire Sara Blakely, founder of the shapewear business Spanx, has seen many failures. She made a living by selling fax machines for seven years. Knocking on many doors and making a lot of mistakes was a journey she considers educational. Sara Blakely owes her risk-taking skills to the weekend talk she had with her father.
As a child, her father would ask her the same question every weekend. “What did you fail in this week, Sara?” He did not care how high her scores were. He wanted to know what she had tried but failed in. When she told him about her failures and mistakes, he would give her a high five. In this way, he programmed her mindset (思维) to believe that mistakes and failures are fine.
So go ahead and ask yourself and your children, “What did we fail in this week?”
4. Why didn’t the author make efforts to learn math?
A. She wasn’t allowed to learn it. B. She thought she was not talented.
C. She wasn’t interested in it. D. She thought it was useless.
5 What is most people’s attitude towards mistakes and failures?
A. Keep trying is necessary. B. Failure is a path to success.
C. Mistakes are not acceptable. D. Encouragement is important.
6. What does the underlined word “programmed” in paragragh 5 mean?
A. Trained and built. B. Planned and arranged.
C. Operated and challenged. D. Instructed and controlled.
7. What would be the best title for the text?
A. A key to Success B. The Power of a Good Mindset
C. A Method of Education D. The Magic of Mistakes
C
Getting rid of dirt, in the opinion of most people, is a good thing. However, there is nothing fixed about attitudes to dirt.
In the early 16t century, people thought that dirt on the skin was a means to block out disease, as medical opinion showed that washing off dirt with hot water could open up the skin and let ills in. A particular danger was thought to lie in public baths. By 1538, the French king had closed the bath houses in his kingdom. So did the king of England in 1546. Thus began a long time when the rich and the poor in Europe lived with dirt in a friendly way. Henry IV, King of France, was famously dirty. Upon learning that a nobleman (贵族) had taken a bath, the king ordered that, to avoid the attack of disease the nobleman should not go out.
Though the belief in the benefits of dirt was long-lived, dirt has no longer been regarded as a nice neighbor ever since the 18th century. Scientifically speaking, cleaning away dirt is good to health. Clean water supply and hand washing are practical means of preventing disease. Yet, it seems that standards of cleanliness have moved beyond science since World War II. Advertisements repeatedly sell the idea: clothes need to be whiter than white, cloths ever softer, surfaces to shine. Has the hate for dirt, however, gone too far?
Attitudes to dirt still differ hugely nowadays. Many first-time parents nervously try to warn their children off touching dirt, which might be responsible for the spread of disease. On the contrary, Mary Ruebush, an American immunologist (免疫学家), encourages children to play in the dirt to build up a strong immune system. And the latter position is gaining some ground.
8. The kings of France and England in the 16th century closed bath houses because ________.
A. they lived healthily in a dirty environment
B. they thought bath houses were too dirty to stay in
C. they believed disease could be spread in public baths
D. they considered bathing as the cause of skin diseases
9. Which of the following best describes Henry IV’s attitude to bathing?
A. Afraid. B. Content. C. Supportive. D. Uninterested.
10. How does the passage mainly develop?
A. By providing examples. B. By making comparisons.
C. By following the order of time. D. By following the order of importance.
11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To stress the role of dirt. B. To introduce the history of dirt.
C To call attention to the danger of dirt. D. To show the change of views on dirt.
D
Over the past few decades, children have been taking part less in free play and more in organized sports. While doing organized sports has both social and physical benefits for young children, worries about safety and benefits increase.
Though most children are naturally likely to be physically active, not all kids are willing to get up and move. Soccer coach Joseph Luxbacher says, “Every kid has the possibility of being a good sportsman in different kinds of sports. Participating (参加) in organized sports such as the school soccer team introduces direction to children’s physical activities. Following a team schedule gives kids a set time and place to exercise. As a result, kids can be safe from accidents and be protected against physical harm.”
What’s more, participating in organized sports gives children time to communicate with others and shows good sportsmanship. For young children who may still be very self-centered, participating in team sports teaches them to think about the group and encourages them to be glad about the success of their teammates. Kids can also benefit from spending time with their coach and having a chance to develop a positive (良好的) relationship with an adult other than their parents, especially if the coach is both skilled and devoted (全心全意的) to being a positive instructor.
Playing organized sports requires a lot of time for practice and games, so it would seem that this could influence students’ study. Actually it can ameliorate students’ test performance. That’s because to play organized sports well, players have to memorize information, do repetitive actions, and learn from teammates. All these types of learning skills can make students score higher.
Since stress can come from many different sources — parents, coaches, teammates or themselves — many children who participate in organized sports feel pressured to succeed. While a little stress can be helpful in leading children to perform with increased focus and strength, too much stress will leave young kids feeling very tired. Organized sports are more likely to put the right amount of pressure on them.
12. What can we learn from Joseph Luxbacher’s words?
A. Organized sports can help develop kids’ talents.
B. Most children prefer free play to organized sports.
C. Most children have a set time and place to exercise.
D. Organized sports can better protect kids from injuries.
13. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Ways to attract kids to organized sports.
B. Standards of a good organized sports coach.
C. Social skills developed by playing organized sports.
D. Positive parent-child relationships built by doing sports.
14. What does the underlined word “ ameliorate” mean in paragraph 4?
A. Score. B. Record. C. Check. D. Improve.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. How organized sports can benefit children B. How to coach children in organized sports
C. How organized sports put pressure on children D. How to be a good teammate in organized sports

A By providing examples. B. By making comparisons.
C. By following the order of time. D. By following the order of importance.
11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To stress the role of dirt. B. To introduce the history of dirt.
C. To call attention to the danger of dirt. D. To show the change of views on dirt.
C 9. A 10. C 11. D

根据第二段中“Henry IV, King of France, was famously dirty. Upon learning that a nobleman (贵族) had taken a bath, the king ordered that, to avoid the attack of disease the nobleman should not go out. 【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“In the early 16t century, people thought that dirt on the skin was a means to block out disease (在16世纪早期,人们认为皮肤上的污垢是阻挡疾病的一种手段)”、第三段中“Though the belief in the benefits of dirt was long-lived, dirt has no longer been regarded as a nice neighbor ever since the 18th century. (尽管人们长久以来都相信污垢能带来好处,但自18世纪以来,污垢就不再被视为好邻居)”和最后一段中“Attitudes to dirt still differ hugely nowadays. (如今,人们对污垢的态度仍有很大不同)”可知,文章按照从古到今的时间顺序,介绍了三个时期人们对于污垢的看法。故选C项。
【11题详解】

根据第三段“What’s more, participating in organized sports gives children time to communicate with others and shows good sportsmanship. For young children who may still be very self-centered, participating in team, sports teach them to think about the group and encourages them to be glad about the success of their teammates. Kids can also benefit from spending time with their coach and having a chance to develop a positive (良好的) relationship with an adult other than their parents, especially if the coach is both skilled and devoted (全心全意的) to being a positive instructor.(更重要的是,参加有组织的体育活动给孩子们时间与他人交流,表现出良好的体育精神。对于那些可能仍然非常以自我为中心的孩子来说,参加团队运动教会他们为团队着想,并鼓励他们为队友的成功感到高兴。孩子们也可以从花时间和他们的教练在一起,并有机会与父母以外的成年人建立积极的关系中受益,特别是如果教练既熟练又致力于成为一名积极的教练)”可知,第三段的主要内容是:孩子们可以通过参加有组织的运动来学习社交技能。故选C。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词后文“That’s because to play organized sports well, players have to memorize information, do repetitive actions, and learn from teammates. All these types of learning skills can make students score higher.(这是因为要进行有组织的运动,运动员必须记住信息,做重复的动作,并向队友学习。所有这些类型的学习技能都可以让学生获得更高的分数)”可知,参加有组织的体育运动是有助于改善学生成绩的,故画线词意思是“改善、提高”。故选D。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Over the past few decades, children have been taking part less in free play and more in organized sports. While doing organized sports has both social and physical benefits for young children, worries about safety and benefits increase.(在过去的几十年里,孩子们越来越少地参加自由游戏,而更多地参加有组织的体育活动。虽然进行有组织的体育运动对幼儿的社会和身体都有好处,但对安全和好处的担忧也在增加)”结合文章主要介绍了有组织的体育运动对学生是有益的,故A选项“有组织的运动如何使儿童受益”能概括全文,适合用作文章标题,故选A。

But over time, we began trying to put everything we want into a checklist.(曾经,假期能让人从日常生活压力中得到放松。
根据前文“In fact, you free yourself from scratching the surface of everything without enjoying anything.(事实上,你把自己从肤浅的事物中解放出来,而不享受任何东西)”以及后文“Go to one museum and study the art and architecture, get the backstory rather than running through three museums and taking some photos quickly. 【20题详解】
分析设空可知,空处是本段小标题,根据后文“Traveling by plane, train, and bus has a bad effect on the environment. We can transport ourselves to one location and spend more time exploring it on foot, by bike or on horseback.
