In the hours that followed hearing the news, I couldn’t think or focus or stop crying. I had to cancel a meeting. It wasn’t like Sammy was still one of my best friends. Was I allowed to be upset?
I had always hoped one day our paths would cross naturally. We would grab a drink and hear how our lives had turned out. I had often wondered whether Sammy was happy. What career did she choose? Where was she living and with who? Within a few hours of hearing she had died, I finally found all this out. And I was full of regret. Why hadn’t I just contacted her? Why hadn’t I reached out to tell her, that despite everything, I still hold many wonderful memories of her?
Then an interesting thing happened. As the shock wore off, so did the regrets. In fact, within a few days there were no regrets. Just some sadness. There was actually no unfinished business.
The funny thing about death is how final it is. We hear this so much. We are advised we must pre-empt(预先处理) regrets by telling those we love how much we love them. We need to make peace with people who have wronged us. But for me, I learnt that it’s about making peace with the past and being sure of your choices. So when you lose a friend, it’s okay to feel however you feel. For me, it turned out to be grief for what I’d hoped for. And her death meant that possibility, however small, was now gone.
So how should we feel when someone we were once close to dies? Whatever you feel is okay.
4. What was the author’s initial reaction to hearing about Sammy’s death?
A. Relief and immediate peace. B. Shock and uncontrollable crying.
C. Acceptance and unspeakable pain. D. Confusion and contained weeping.
5. What regret did the author have according to paragraph 2?
A. Not apologizing to Sammy. B. Not attending Sammy’s funeral.
C. Not reaching out to Sammy earlier. D. Not understanding Sammy’s career choice.
6. How did the author’s feelings evolve after the shock wore off?
A. They were replaced by anger. B. They became stronger and fiercer.
C. They turned into acceptance and peace D. They remained full of sadness and regret.
7. Which of the following would the author agree?
A. Losing a friend means unavoidable regrets will follow.
B. True sadness comes from regret over missed opportunities.
C. It’s important to solve all unfinished business before it’s too late.
D It’s more important to make peace with your past than with the people in it.

The Forsa Ring is an iron ring from Hälsingland, dating back to the 10th century. The inscription (铭文) on the ring describes fines for a specific crime, where payment was to be made in the form of oxen and silver. The ring is believed to have been used as a door handle and is currently the oldest known preserved legal text in Scandinavia. By changing the translation of the word “auk” from the previous interpretation “and” to the new interpretation “also” the meaning changes so that fines could be paid either with an ox or with two ore of silver. An ore was equal to about 25 grams of silver.
“This indicates a much more flexible system, where both oxen and silver could be used as units of payment. If a person had easier access to oxen than to silver, they could pay their fines with an ox. On the contrary, if someone had silver but no oxen, they could pay with two ore of silver,” says Rodney Edvinsson.
The new interpretation shows that the Vikings had a system where both oxen and silver served as units of payment. This system allowed for multiple types of units of accounts to be used at the same time, reducing transaction (交易) difficulty and making it easier for individuals to meet their financial responsibilities. The new interpretation also agrees better with how the system functioned later according to later regional laws and is, according to Rodney Edvinsson, significant for our understanding of both Scandinavian and European history of money.
Edvinsson previously contributed to developing a historical consumer price index as far back as the 13th century, but this new interpretation provides insights into price levels even earlier in history. The study highlights the importance of using modern economic theories to interpret historical sources. By combining economic theory with archaeological (考古学的) and historical findings, new opportunities for cross-field research and a deeper understanding of early economic systems are opened up.
8. What can we learn from the first two paragraphs?
A. Vikings only accepted silver as payment for fines from crimes.
B. Vikings had no knowledge of legal systems before the 10th century.
C. The Forsa Ring inscription suggested punishments in oxen and silver.
D. The Forsa Ring was mainly used as a means of trading oxen and silver.
9. Which of the following is an advantage of the payment system?
A. People found it more convenient to pay their fines.
B. According to later regional laws, it functioned better.
C. It allowed for a unique kind of currency unit to be used.
D. It became easier for governments to settle their financial duties.
10. What is the significance of the new interpretation?
A. It is about 3 centuries older than Rodney Edvinsson’s previous study.
B. A new means of interpreting bistorical sources of inscription is available.
C. It shows that early Scandinavians had an advanced overall payment system.
D. Opportunities of cross-field research and understanding early economies emerge.
11. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Early Payment Systems in Scandinavia.
B. Interpretations of the Vikings’ Legal System.
C. New Insights into the Forsa Ring’s Inscription.
D. The Discovery of the Scandinavian Forsa Ring.

A recent study by researchers at the University of Cincinnati, led by Dr. Alberto Espay, challenges the common idea that monoclonal-antibodies (单克隆抗体) help slow down memory loss in Alzheimer’s patients by removing amyloid-plaques (淀粉样斑块).
Instead, the study shows that an unexpected increase in a key brain protein, called amyloid-beta 42 (Aβ42), is more closely linked to improvements in thinking ability. This research was published in the journal Brain on September 11. For many years, experts believed that amyloid-plaques, which form from Aβ42, harm the brain and cause Alzheimer’s disease. However, Dr. Espay and his team suggest a different theory. They believe the real problem is the loss of soluble (易溶解的) Aβ42, which is important for keeping brain cells healthy, rather than the buildup of plaques. Previous research from Dr. Espay’s group showed that Alzheimer’s symptoms appear when Aβ42 levels fall too low, not when plaque levels are high.
According to Dr. Espay, the formation of amyloid plaques may be the brain’s natural way of responding to stress, like changes in metabolism (代谢). He points out that many people get amyloid-plaques as they age but do not develop dementia (痴呆). Still, current treatments for Alzheimer’s focus on these plaques.
New monoclonal-antibody treatments, meant to clear amyloid, have shown benefits in clinical trials. Dr. Espay’s team studied data from almost 26,000 patients in 24 clinical trials of these antibody treatments. They found that these treatments also accidentally increased Aβ42 levels. This suggests that the improvement in thinking may be because of higher Aβ42 levels. not because of plaque removal.
While raising Aβ42 levels seems helpful, Dr. Espay warns that removing amyloid plaques could harm the brain by making it shrink faster. He suggests focusing on treatments that raise Aβ42 directly, without targeting amyloid plaques. “Increasing Aβ42 is the goal, ”he says, “but removing amyloid may not be the right way to do it.”
12. What’s the common idea of treating Alzheimer’s?
A. Reducing brain shrinkage. B. Increasing neuron activity.
C. Raising Aβ42 levels in the brain. D. Removing amyloid-plaques from the brain.
13. What do we know about Aβ42?
A. It is unrelated to the Alzheimer’s.
B. It is only harmful when it forms plaques.
C. Its loss may lead to Alzheimer’s symptoms.
D. It damages brain cells when its levels are high.
14. What can we infer from paragraph 3?
A. Everyone with amyloid plaques develops dementia.
B. Amyloid plaques may be a protective response by the brain.
C. Current Alzheimer’s treatments focus on raising Aβ42 levels.
D. Removing amyloid plaques guarantees better cognitive function.
15. Which of the following will Dr. Espay agree with?
A. Treatments should focus on raising Aβ42 levels.
B. Removing amyloid plaques will prevent Alzheimer’s.
C. Amyloid plaques are the main cause of Alzheimer’s disease.
D. Increasing Aβ42 levels through amyloid removal is always safe.

Steps to a creative play
Now that plays are gaining increasing popularity, many students have tried to create their own characters and plots. ____16____. Let’s look at the following elements on how to create your own play!
Select a catchy title.
Begin by choosing a title that hints at the central theme or situation of the play. ____17____. Or at least it should set the tone. For example, if the play is about a lost item, a title like “The Missing Key” or “Lost and Found” would work.
Create charming characters.
In a short play, limit the characters to two or three. This allows for quick character development and reduces the complexity of interactions. The fewer characters, the easier it is to build meaningful dialogue. Each character should have a distinct personality or role in the situation. ____18____.
Keep a simple setting.
Descriptions will take up precious words, so plain settings work wonders. A setting like a park bench, a living room, or a café provides just enough context for the action. The setting should support the dialogue and conflict without needing too much explanation.
____19____.
Introduce a small, everyday problem that the characters need to resolve. This problem should be something the audience can relate to, such as losing something, misunderstanding directions, or being late for an event. This conflict is also what drives the dialogue forward and gives the characters a reason to interact.
Offer an effective resolution (解决).
End with a quick resolution or leave it open-ended. Given the limited word count, the resolution should tie up the conflict efficiently or suggest an ongoing issue. ____20____.
40
A. Create a difficult problem
B. Introduce reasonable conflicts
C An open ending leaves room for readers’ imagination

Mandy and I had been classmates since kindergarten. Wherever I was, she was always ahead of me. Dance-class show needs a lead dancer? Mandy was picked. Softball? She played first base while I watched her from my position in the outfield. And the school plays would star her while I was chosen to play as her mother or sister.
It was a big event: the Spring Fling Choir Concert. The choir concert tryouts (选拔) was important for us. We waited in the library while Ms. Jenkins called us one at a time into the choir room. By the time she called my name, my whole body was shaking. However, Mandy behaved calmly and was smiling when her tryout was over. So I wasn’t surprised when Mandy’s name was on the choral group’s list and mine wasn’t. “So,” I said to myself, “what else is new?” Sudden clapping brought me out of my thought. Everyone was looking at me. Ms. Jenkins beamed down at me and said, “Cindy, you will have to start practising in your spare time. The solos take extra preparation.” Solo? I got the solo? I glanced over at Mandy. She gave me the thumbs-up sign.
The day of my big solo had finally arrived. Everyone was there: my mom, dad and my little brother. The whole class was dressed up and I had on a new dress. We walked onto the stage and I was front and center. The audience’s expectant gaze made me very nervous. Again, my body was shaking. “You can do it, Cindy,” Mandy whispered from behind me “I’ll be humming (哼唱) softly behind you, take it easy!”
Ms. Jenkins raised her baton (指挥棒) and we began to sing. I could see my mother leaning forward in her seat, her camera already flashing for pictures. My big moment was here. The spotlight circled me in its bright light. Ms. Jenkins nodded and pointed her baton at me.

I froze right there on the spot. I couldn’t think. Most of all, I couldn’t sing. Tension flooding over me, I could feel my palms sweating, heart racing wildly in my chest. With the note stuck in my tight throat, I didn’t know what to do next. But at that same moment, from behind me, came the pure tone of the right note. Mandy gave me a gentle poke. Following her humming, my voice lifted and matched hers. When the next note came, it was all me. Utterly immersed in the melody, I closed my eyes, my voice flowing like a river of feelings and each note touching audiences’ heart.
With Mandy’s help, my solo went well and the auditorium (礼堂) echoed with thunderous applause. As I opened my eyes, I was greeted with the cheers of the audience and a standing ovation. We walked off the stage and my family met me with praise and hugs. Mandy came up to me and wrapped her arms around me tightly. “Thanks, Mandy,” was all I could get myself to say. Mandy flashed me her usual sunny smile: “A friend is never known till a man has need.” It was on that very day that I made my best friend and I truly understood the value of friendship.
