Artemisinin has saved 3. hundreds of thousands of lives, and has led to improved health for millions of people.(4.1) Over 200 million people around the world get malaria each year, and about 600,000 4. die from it. Artemisinin has become a vital part of the treatment for malaria, and 5. is thought to save 100,000 lives a year in Africa alone. 3. 并列连词画三角 Para 1 Tu Youyou, a committed and patient scientist, was born in Ningbo,China, on 30 December 1930, and 6.graduated from Peking University Medical School in 1955. After she graduated, she worked at the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Beijing. In1967,the Chinese government formed a team of scientists 7.with the objective of discovering a new treatment for malaria, and Tu youyou was among 8.the first researchers chosen. In the beginning, Tu Youyou went to Hainan, where malaria was more common to study malaria patients. In 1969, she became the head of the project in Beijing, and decided to review ancient Chinese medical texts to find traditional botanical 8.treatments for the disease. Her team examined over 2,000 old medical texts, and evaluated 280,000 plants for their 9.medical properties. From their research, they discovered and tested 380 10.distinct ancient Chinese medical treatments that 11.showed promise in the fight against malaria. Para 2 5mins边读边分析边理解 One medical text from the fourth century 12.suggested using the extract from sweet wormwood to treat a fever. Tu's team tested 13.a collection of dried wormwood leaves but found no effect. They then 14.tried boiling fresh wormwood, and using the liquid obtained from this to treat malaria, but this did not work either. Their project 15.got stuck. However, Tu Youyou would not 16.acknowledge defeat. She analysed the medical texts again, and 17.by chance, she found one sentence suggesting a different way to treat the wormwood. She concluded that boiling the sweet wormwood apparently destroyed its medical properties. Para 3 4mins边读边分析边理解 Using a lower temperature to 18.draw out the extract, she found a substance that worked. After failing 19.more than190 times, the team finally succeeded in 1971. Tu Youyou and her team members even 20.insisted on testing the medicine on themselves to 21.make sure that it was safe. Later, the medicine was tested on malaria patients, most of whom recovered. This medicine which was called artemisinin, soon became a standard treatment for malaria. Para 4 4mins边读边分析边理解 According to Tu Youyou, the discovery of artemisinin was a team effort. 22.Upon hearing that she had been awarded the Nobel Prize, she said,“The honour is not just mine. There is a team behind me and all the people of my country. This success proves the great value of traditional Chinese medicine. It is indeed an honour for China's scientific research and Chinese medicine to be spread around the world.” Para 5 4mins边读边分析边理解 被奖励给某人(award) 导致(lead) 成百上千的生命 死于(die) 被认为(think) 毕业于(graduate) 有着...的目标(objective) 第一批被选择的研究员 ...的治疗办法(treatment) 药性(property) 显示了对抗疟疾的前景(promise) 重点词块复习(8mins背下来) 建议做某事(suggest) 一系列(collection) 尝试做某事(try) 陷入困境(stuck) 认输(acknowledge) 偶然(chance) 提取出(draw) more than (3) 坚持做某事(insist) 确保(make) 一听说(upon) 篇章2(P8) The Man Who Changed Our Understanding of The Universe 读一遍 理解一遍 The Man Who Changed Our Understanding of The Universe Para 1: Albert Einstein, who is perhaps the greatest scientist in modern physics, is often considered one ofthe smartest men who ever lived. 1. He made numerous contributions to the world, the most well-known being the general theory of relativity and the famous formula E=mc2 Einstein was not only a genius; 2. he was a courageous and kind figure loved by many people. Para 2 This gentle genius 3.was born in Germany on 14 March 1879. When he was 16, he tried to enter university in Switzerland but failed 4.due to his low scores in the general part of 5.the entrance exam, despite 6.obtaining exceptional scores in maths and physics After studying for another year, he 7.managed to pass the exam entering university in 1896 and graduating in 1900. The Man Who Changed Our Understanding of The Universe Para 3 After two years of 8.looking for work as a teacher, Einstein 9.took a job as a clerk in the Swiss patent office. While working there 10.out of a strong passion for knowledge, he 11.continued to study,12. earning a doctorate in physics in 1905.That same year, which was later recorded as a miracle year in sciencehe published four extraordinary physics papers.Following this he gradually became famous throughout the world as the new Isaac Newton. After four years he was able to quit his job at the patent office and enter research full-time at a university. In 1922,he was awarded the 1921 Nobel Prize for Physics for his explanation of the photoelectric effect. The Man Who Changed Our Understanding of The Universe Para 4 Circumstances changed in 1933,when Hitler 13.came to power in Germany.Einstein, who was Jewish, found the doors of 14.academic institutions closed to him. 15.As a consequence, he had to flee Germany. After spending time in Europe he finally 16.took up a position as a researcher at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton USA.Following that, he 17.continued to make great achievements in physics and mathematics. The Man Who Changed Our Understanding of The Universe Para 5 To the public, 18.he was seen as a slightly odd-looking but kind and funny man. He had a thick moustache and long white hair, which sometimes stood on end 19.as though he had just received an electric shock. Although he was a genius, he sometimes forgot things, like his friends birthdays. But despite his peculiarities he was loved by his friends and neighbours. There is even a story about how he helped a little girl who knocked on his door and asked for help with her homework. In fact,Einstein often 20.encountered people on the street who would stop him and ask him to help explain things. After many such occasions,he finally started saying,“Pardon me! Sorry! Always I 21.am mistaken for Professor Einstein!” The Man Who Changed Our Understanding of The Universe Para 6 On 18 April 1955,it was reported that Einstein had 22.passed away, and the whole world mourned the great loss of a brilliant scientist. The Man Who Changed Our Understanding of The Universe 重点词块复习(8mins背下来) 他为世界做出了许多的贡献(contribution) 他是一个勇敢善良的(被许多人所爱的)人 出生于(born) 由于(due) 入学考试 获得杰出的成绩(brilliant) 成功通过考试(manage to do) 寻找(look) 参加工作作为一个职员(take) 出于对知识强烈的热情(out of ) 继续学习(continue) 获得一个博士学位在物理学上(docotorate) 执政;上台(power) 学术的机构(academic) 所以;因此(consequence) 担任一个研究员(take) 继续取得很大的成就s在物理学和数学上(make) 他被看做一个有点儿奇怪但是善良又有趣的男人(be seen as) 偶遇 被误认为 去世 课时 4.2:读后续写30mins 要求: 必须按时完成 可以查资料,随便提问(单词,句子) 尽可能写到最好水平(内容+字体) I was invited to a cookout(=barbecue n.野外烧烤宴会) on an old friend's farm in western Washington. I parked my car outside the farm and walked past a milking house(牛奶房) which had apparently(显然) not been used in many years. A noise at a window caught my attention, so I entered it. It was a hummingbird (蜂鸟), desperately(绝望地) trying to escape. She was covered in spider-webs(蛛网)and was barely(几乎不) able to move her wings. She ceased(停止) her struggle the instant(一...就...) I picked her up. With the bird in my cupped hand(窝起的/杯状的手), I looked around to see how she had gotten in. The broken window glass was the likely answer. I stuffed(塞) a piece of cloth(布) into the hole and took her outside, closing the door securely(安全地) behind me. When I opened my hand, the bird did not fly away; she sat looking at me with her bright eyes. I removed the sticky(黏的) spider-webs that covered her head and wings. Still(但是), she made no attempt to(没尝试做...) fly. Perhaps she had been struggling against the window too long and was too tired or too thirsty. As I carried her up the blackberry-lined path toward my car where I kept a water bottle, she began to move. I stopped, and she soon took wing but did not immediately fly away. Hovering(悬停), she approached within six inches of my face. For a very long moment, this tiny creature looked into my eyes, turning her head from side to side. Then she flew quickly out of sight(在视野之外). During the cookout, I told my hosts about the hummingbird incident(事件). They promised to fix the window. As I was departing(离开), my friends walked me to my car. I was standing by the car when a hummingbird flew to the center of our group and began hovering. She turned from person to person until she came to me. She again looked directly into my eyes, then let out(发出) a squeaking call(吱吱声) and was gone. For a moment, all were speechless. Then someone said, “She must have come to say good- bye.” $$
