时文拓展阅读
Volunteering is an act of selflessness and dedication that has the potential to bring positive change to communities and individuals around the globe. It is a way for people to give back to their communities, make a difference in the world, and gain valuable skills and experiences that can benefit them throughout their lives.
When we volunteer, we are not only helping others but also ourselves. The satisfaction and joy that come from making a positive impact on someone's life or contributing to a worthy cause can be incredibly rewarding. Volunteering allows us to connect with others, build relationships, and create a sense of belonging and purpose.
Moreover, volunteering provides opportunities for personal growth and development. Through volunteering, we can learn new skills, gain confidence, and develop leadership abilities. We can also broaden our perspectives and gain a deeper understanding of different cultures, beliefs, and lifestyles. These experiences can enhance our resumes and make us more competitive in the job market.
The benefits of volunteering extend far beyond the individual level. Volunteering plays a crucial role in building stronger, more resilient communities. When people work together towards a common goal, they create a sense of unity and cooperation that can lead to positive social change. Volunteering can also address critical societal issues such as poverty, education, health, and environmental conservation.
In addition, volunteering has the power to break down barriers and promote inclusivity. It brings together people from different backgrounds, ages, and walks of life, fostering empathy, understanding, and respect. By volunteering, we can challenge stereotypes and promote diversity and equality.
Furthermore, volunteering has a significant impact on the recipients of our help. It can provide hope, inspiration, and a sense of worth to those who may be struggling or facing difficult circumstances. Volunteering can also create a ripple effect, inspiring others to take action and make a positive change in their own lives and communities.
To make the most of volunteering, it is important to find a cause or organization that aligns with our interests and values. This will ensure that we are passionate and committed to the work we do. We should also be open to learning and adapting, as volunteering often requires flexibility and a willingness to step outside our comfort zones.
In conclusion, volunteering is a powerful tool for creating positive change in the world. It not only benefits the individuals and communities we serve but also enriches our own lives. By volunteering, we can make a tangible difference, foster social cohesion, and promote a more inclusive and compassionate society. So, let us embrace the power of volunteering and together make the world a better place.

British artist Sacha Jafri has had an incredible year. In September, he set the record creating the world's largest painting. Last week, the painting was sold for $62 million, which Mr. Jafri will give to charity.
Mr. Jafri is a 44-year-old artist from England. Last year, as the coronavirus spread and many countries went into lockdown, Mr. Jafri was in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Rather than feeling stuck because he was unable to move on, Mr. Jafri decided to take on a huge project that could "make a really big difference". He decided to create the world's largest painting. And he wanted to do it in a way that would involve people from around the world. He asked children to send him pictures showing how they were feeling during the pandemic. He got artwork from kids in 140 different countries. Using the children's ideas as a starting point, Mr. Jafri began to paint.
The painting is massive --- over 17,000 square feet. Mr. Jafri planned to cut it up into smaller pieces when he was finished, so he could sell them for charity. It took him 7 months to create the painting. He worked long hours --- often up to 20 hours a day.
Mr. Jafri hoped that his painting, called "The Journey of Humanity", would help bring the world together during a difficult time. He tried to keep the ideas from the children's pictures in his mind. He even included the children's drawings in the artwork. When he finished last September, he had set a Guinness World Record for the world's largest painting. The painting was roughly the size of four basketball courts. Since Mr. Jafri's goal was to raise money to help children, the painting was split up into 70 large sections. Mr. Jafri hoped that by selling the sections separately, he could raise $30 million.
But when the auction (拍卖) ended on March 22, Mr. Jafri did much better than that. And he didn't have to split up the pieces. The whole artwork was sold for $62 million. That's the fourth highest price ever paid for a painting by a living artist.
1.What drove Mr. Jafri to work on such a huge project?
A.His talent for painting. B.His craziness about fame.
C.His desire for wealth. D.His enthusiasm for charity.
2.What do you know about Mr. Jafri's artwork?

Last Sunday, an earthquake struck the Napa Valley area of northern California. It happened in the middle of the night, becoming the strongest earthquake to strike the Napa Valley in 15 years. No one was killed, but many people were treated in hospitals.
I said to my seven-year-old twins, Brad and Brett, and three-year-old Meghan, “We have so much, and these poor people in trouble now have nothing. We’ll share what we have with them.”
I filled a box with foods and clothes. While I was doing this, I advised the boys to choose their toys and donate some of their less favourite things. Meghan watched quietly as the boys took out their old toys and put them together. Then she walked away. A few minutes later she came back with Lucy, her much-loved doll. She put the doll on top of the other toys.
“Oh, dear,” I said. “You don’t have to give Lucy. You love her so much.” Meghan said, “Lucy makes me happy, Mummy. Maybe she’ll make another little girl happy, too.”
I looked at Meghan for a long moment. She taught me a lesson. It’s easy to give something that we don’t want any more, but hard to give what we cherish (珍爱), isn’t it?

The moonlight poured in through the windows, lighting the room. Oliver was sitting at the table, totally absorbed in his book. Oliver was a book fan. He read books whenever he could. Grandma Agnes felt sorry for Oliver when she heard him talk enthusiastically about the books he read because they were poor. She knew the money she gave him for lunch was spent on those books instead.
The next day, on the bus, Oliver was reading his storybook again when he heard a noise and raised his eyes. He saw the bus driver shouting at a blind older woman. She explained to the driver that her daughter was ill in hospital, and that she forgot to bring her purse. The driver mistakenly believed that she was making excuses to avoid paying the bus ticket! Knowing she wouldn’t be able to persuade the driver, the older woman was about to get off the bus, when Oliver stepped in.
“I’ll pay for her fare, sir!” he said. Then Oliver helped the blind older woman into the seat next to him and paid her fare. When he returned to his seat, the woman said to him, “Thank you, little kid, you have a sweet voice!”
“I’m a big boy! And my name is Oliver, ” Oliver said proudly. “I’m Mary,” the older woman introduced herself and expressed her gratitude for helping her. Although Oliver had planned to use the money to buy the next book in the series he was reading, he couldn’t bear to see Mary in trouble.

It’s 1:30 am in Kenya’s populated north, and 50 people are lying on their backs on the shore of a dried-up river, staring up at the night sky. These stargazers have travelled 250 miles to Samburu to witness the Perseid meteor shower(英仙座流星雨). They are not disappointed: Every few minutes, arrows of light shoot across the sky like silent fireworks.
The Star Safari is organised by a Kenyan astronomer, Susan Murabana, who has brought a 50 kg,170 cm-long telescope to allow the group to view Mars and deep-sky objects. But here in Samburu, where light pollution is minimal, the Perseid meteors—visible with the naked eye (裸眼)—steal the show.
Every two months, Murabana and her husband load their telescope on to the roof of their 4×4 and set off to rural communities, where they give up to 300 children a chance to view the planets and learn about constellations (星座) and the basics of astrophysics. They primarily targets schools in remote areas because of her mission to give girls an opportunity that she wishes had been available to her.
“When I started this work, I didn’t see people who looked like me. I was a lone ranger and I wanted to change that.” says Murabana.
“There is a common misconception in Kenya that astronomy in general is hard, boring, and only for boys,” she adds. “I’d like to teach young girls that astronomy is neither of these things and that they, too, can become astronomers,” says Murabana.
Murabana’s passion for astronomy began in her early 20s when her uncle invited her to join a similar outreach session organized by the Cosmos Education. “That was a gamechanger. If an outreach group had come to me when I was a young teenager, my attitude towards a career in astronomy would have been positive. I ended up studying sociology and economics, but maybe I would have desired to be an astronomer,” she says.
Inspired by the Cosmos Education, Murabana completed an online master’s degree in astronomy with the James Cook University in 201l and set up her own outreach programme. She looked to Dr Mae Jemison, the first black woman in space, as a role model. “I hope that one day, through this work, I will spark a chain reaction that leads to the first African woman in space.”
1.What do the underlined words “steal the show” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Ruin the effort. B.Face the challenge.
C.Attract more attention. D.Keep the promise.
2.Why does Murabana target girl students in remote areas?
A.To help them out of poverty. B.To inspire their love of astronomy.
C.To look for assistants for her work. D.To give them an edge over boys in studies.
3.What can we learn about Murabana from paragraph 6?
A.She enjoyed playing games.
B.She longed to be an astronomer.
C.She is an initiator of Cosmos Education.
D.She regretted not taking astronomy earlier.
4.What’s the passage mainly about?
A.The birth of a Kenyan woman astronomer.
B.The prejudice against girls in rural Kenyan.
C.The Kenyan astronomer bringing astronomy to the people.
D.The Kenyan stargazers watching the Perseid meteors shower.
【解析】本篇是记叙文。文章主要讲述了肯尼亚天文学家Susan Murabana致力于普及天文知识的情况。
1.词义猜测题。根据前文“The Star Safari is organised by a Kenyan astronomer, Susan Murabana, who has brought a 50 kg,170 cm-long telescope to allow the group to view Mars and deep-sky objects. But here in Samburu, where light pollution is minimal, the Perseid meteors—visible with the naked eye(裸眼) (星际旅行由肯尼亚天文学家Susan Murabana组织,她带来了一个50公斤,170厘米长的望远镜,让这个团队可以观察火星和深空天体。但是在这里的桑布鲁,光污染最小,英仙座流星——肉眼可见)”可知,以前是这架望远镜让大家观察天体,而这次因为污染少流星雨用裸眼可以看见从而抢了望远镜的风头,因此划线部分的意思是“吸引了更多注意力”。故选C。
2.细节理解题。根据第三段“They primarily targets schools in remote areas because of her mission to give girls an opportunity that she wishes had been available to her. (他们主要针对偏远地区的学校,因为她的使命是给女孩们一个她希望能得到的机会。)”和第五段““There is a common misconception in Kenya that astronomy in general is hard, boring, and only for boys,” she adds. “I’d like to teach young girls that astronomy is neither of these things and that they, too, can become astronomers,” says Murabana.(她补充说:“在肯尼亚有一种普遍的误解,认为天文学总体上是困难、无聊的,而且只适合男孩。”Murabana说:“我想告诉年轻女孩,天文学不是这两种东西,她们也可以成为天文学家。”)”可知,Murabana主要针对偏远地区的孩子尤其是女孩,为了激发她们对天文学的热爱。故选B。
3.推理判断题。根据第六段“If an outreach group had come to me when I was a young teenager.my attitude towards a career in astronomy would have been positive. I ended up studying sociology and economics, but maybe I would have desired to be an astronomer (如果在我十几岁的时候有一个外展小组来找我,我对天文学事业的态度会是积极的。我最终学习了社会学和经济学,但也许我想成为一名天文学家)”推知,Murabana后悔没有早点学天文学。故选D。
4.主旨大意题。通读全文,并结合第三段“Every two months, Murabana and her husband load their telescope on to the roof of their4×4 and set off to rural communities, where they give up to 300 children a chance to view the planets and learn about constellations (星座) and the basics of astrophysics. (每两个月,Murabana和她的丈夫将他们的望远镜装在他们4×4的屋顶上,出发去农村社区,在那里他们给多达300个孩子一个观察行星和了解星座的机会(星座)和天体物理学的基础知识)”可知,本文主要介绍了致力于把天文学带给人民的肯尼亚天文学家Susan Murabana的故事。故选C。

Tya started volunteering as a Greenpeace firefighter after the great forest fire in Riau in2015.
“My family was my main reason to sign up. My parents had a respiratory (呼吸的) infection caused by the smoke. Small children were also forced to stay at home. What is certain is that we are directly impacted by the forest fires,” said Tya.
Now, every year, as summer rolls around, Tya gets worried because that’s when most forest fires occur, either naturally or as a result of land clearing. “In my opinion, forest fires are the result of human activities of those who no longer think about clean air,” she said.
Before carrying out tasks in the field, she had to take a volunteer firefighting course held by Greenpeace Indonesia. As a new firefighter, Tya’s first few duties have been to carry out awareness campaigns to talk about the dangers of forest fires. In order to protect nature, she encourages the public to reduce their use of single-use plastic and also to carry ashtrays to hold cigarette butts. “It could be simple acts but the effect that is felt is extraordinary, especially when people around you are also slowly becoming more aware of climate issues,” she said.
In 2016, Tya and her team spent two weeks putting out fires in the Bukit Timah area. On one of the days, a strong wind had picked up, flaming the underground fire back up to the surface where it quickly started getting worse. Back at camp, Tya and her other colleagues were worried for the safety of their teammates. Fortunately they made it back safely, but their faces looked more tired than usual.
Despite the challenges, the courageous young woman stands ready to do what she can to protect the environment. “As a firefighting volunteer, I must be ready when called upon in the event of a fire and ready to be placed wherever I am needed.”

Growing up, I wanted to be just like my mom. She was kind. People always seemed to feel comfortable in her presence. For years, she was a volunteer in our community. I loved going to the local nursing home with her where she taught a ceramic class.
On one summer day, Mama told me to get changed and meet her at the car.
I had planned to spend the day at the lake with friends. Why did she have to ruin everything? I imagined the cool lake water. Annoyed, I climbed into the car and slammed the door shut. We sat in silence. I was too upset to make conversation.
“Tasha, would you like to know where we are going?” Mama asked calmly.
“No,” I said.
“We are going to volunteer at a children’s shelter today. I have been there before and I think it will benefit you,” she explained.
When we reached the shelter, Mama rang the doorbell. Moments later, we were greeted by a woman. She led us to the front room where all of the children were playing. I noticed a baby whose body was scarred with iron marks. I was told it was because she wouldn’t stop crying. The majority of the children had noticeable physical scars. Others hid their emotional wounds.
As I took in my surroundings, I felt a gentle tug on my shirt. I looked down to see a little girl looking up at me. “Hi. You want to play dolls with me?” she asked. I looked over at Mama for reinforcement. She smiled and nodded. I turned back and said, “Sure.” Her tiny hand reached up and held mine, as if to comfort me.
My mom taught me a worthy lesson that summer. I returned to the shelter with her several times. During those visits, some of the children shared their troubled pasts with me and I learned to be grateful for what I had. Today as I try to instill(逐渐灌输) these values in my own child, I reflect back to that experience. It was a time that I will never forget.

A copy of Edward Said’s Culture and Imperialism sits next to an old edition of Ian Fleming’s Gold finger. Classic novels by George Orwell and Ursula K. Le Guin lie on other shelves along with literature and classics in English, German, French and Russian.
These are just some of the 350 books housed in the “Travellers’ Library”, a two-story wooden house on the bank of a beautiful lake. Its creator is 50-year -old Muhammad Latif Oata—a school dropout. While Oata lacks the required schooling to read these books himself, the stories in them hold great value to him. Forced to drop out of school to support his family, Oata was only 16 when he moved to a strange city where he sold some items from his home state.
One day, a foreign tourist passing by his stand gave Oata a book. Unable to read, he asked the tourist to tell him the story in it. It was about a poor young girl who gained success through continuous effort and struggle. Inspired by the story and hungry for more, he began a barter system where anyone borrowing a book would have to give one in return and tell him a story.
Oata’s collection grew to around 600 by 2003, but floods damaged around 200 of them later. “They are my most prized things,” Oata says with pride in broken English he has picked up from communicating with tourists. When Oata returned to the valley in 2007, he set up a small travel agency with a library for visitors to enjoy.
Over the past year, however, the trouble in the state has led to fewer travelers and Oata’s business has also suffered. How long will he take care of the books and keep his small library open and available for people in need? “As long as I am alive,” he says with a smile. “And even when I am gone, these books will remain there because books always find their readers.”
1.What do we know about Oata?
A.He didn’t like his work.
B.He was removed from school.
C.He didn’t receive much education.
D.He was persuaded to build a wooden house.
2.What does the underlined phrase “a barter system” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A.A system for book sales. B.A system for writing stories.
C.A system for exchanging ideas. D.A system for swapping things.
3.What is Oata’s attitude towards the future of the “Travellers’ Library”?
A.Optimistic. B.Curious.
C.Unconcerned. D.Disappointed.
4.What can we learn from the text?
A.Difficulties have defeated Oata. B.Don’t judge a book by its cover.
C.A friend in need is a friend indeed. D.Books enrich Oata with their magic.

Eleven-year-old Allan Baltz of Jonesboro, Arkansas, is familiar with the foster (领养) care system. When he and his twin sister Alice were only four, they came to live with their foster parents Derek and Lesli Baltz.
Last fall when Allan got an opportunity to pay it forward, he made it count.
During the height of the 2021 shutdown, to keep their kids entertained at home, the family decided to switch up their hairstyles. Lesli dyed her hair red and Alice went blue. Derek tried out a mustache, and Allan went the craziest by growing out a long, beautiful mullet (胭脂鱼发型).
When friends pushed Allan to enter the USA Mullet Championships competition, Allan initially wasn’t interested because he thought he couldn’t win. However, once he learned there was a cash prize, he changed his tune.
“He instantly was like ‘Oh, OK. I can do it, and we’ll give the money to kids in foster care.” Lesli said. “He didn’t hesitate. He didn’t say, ‘I can get a bike, then give some money away.’ It was just instant that he wanted to give it away.”
After submitting his photo and following up with several weeks of campaigning, Allan took home the top prize in the kid’s division with more than 25, 000 votes in his favor.
He split his winnings between two local foster care organizations, Together We Foster and Project Zero, but his impact went far beyond just the $2,500 he donated. His giving heart inspired others to do the same, and he ended up raising an additional $4,500 for the two organizations.
“People also started volunteering … and donating,” Lesli said. “A few people that we know decided to start fostering because of Allan’s story. The way that people hear it and it inspires them to do something about the foster care crisis is really incredible.” Lesli said she couldn’t be prouder of Allan’s heart for helping others and feels truly lucky to be his mom.

Eradajere Oleita thinks she may have a partial solution to two of our country’s persistent problems: garbage and poverty. It’s called the Chip Bag Project. The 26-year-old student and environmentalist from Detroit is asking a favor of local snack lovers: Rather than toss your empty chip bags into the trash, donate them so she can turn them into sleeping bags for the homeless.
Chip eaters drop off their empty bags from Doritos, Lay’s, and other favorites at two locations in Detroit: a print shop and a clothing store, where Oleita and her volunteer helpers collect them. After they sanitize the chip bags in soapy hot water, they slice them open, lay them flat, and iron them together. They use padding and liners from old coats to line the insides.
It takes about four hours to sew a sleeping bag, and each takes around 150 to 300 chip bags, depending on whether they’re single-serve or family size. The result is a sleeping bag that is “waterproof, lightweight, and easy to carry around,” Oleita told the Detroit News. Since its start in 2020, the Chip Bag Project has collected more than 800,000 chip bags and, as of last December, created 110 sleeping bags.
Sure, some people believe it would be simpler to help the homeless by raising money to buy new sleeping bags. But that’s only half the goal for Oleita — whose family moved to the United States from Nigeria a decade ago with the hope of attaining a better life — and her fellow volunteers. “We are dedicated to making an impact not only socially, but environmentally,” she says.
And, of course, there’s the symbolism of recycling bags that would otherwise land in the trash and using them to help the homeless. It’s a powerful reminder that environmental injustice and poverty often go hand in hand. As Oleita told hourdetroit.com, “I think it’s time to show connections between all of these issues.”
1.What’s Oleita’s solution to the problem of garbage and poverty?
A.Talking people out of eating chips.
B.Conducting garbage classification.
C.Buying sleeping bags for the homeless.
D.Recycling chip bags to make sleeping bags.
2.Which word below can be used to replace the underlined word “sanitize” in Para.2?
A.Clean. B.Displace.
C.Classify. D.Analyze.
3.Which statement best describes the sleeping bags made by the Chip Bag Project?
A.Costly and time-consuming. B.Complex and fireproof.
C.Functional and light. D.Fancy and environmentally friendly.
4.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Environmental protection comes first.
B.Poverty results in environmental issues.
C.Garbage and poverty could be dealt with together.
D.The homeless should help each other hand in hand.

Task 2
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使其构成一篇完整的短文。
It all started with a simple question: “Can I paint your portrait?”
In the summer of 2015, Peterson and his wife, Vanessa, had just moved to Santa Ana, California. Outside the couple’s fourth-floor apartment, a homeless man was often yelling on the street corner, sometimes keeping them awake at night. Peterson, 28. would pass the guy on his way to his job, but they never spoke . What could they possibly have in common?
One day, Peterson was relaxing in his living room, reading a book, when his quiet was disturbed by the homeless man. Inspired by the book’s compassionate message, Peterson made an unexpected decision: He was going to go outside and introduce himself.
In that first conversation, Peterson learned the man’ s name was Faris. He’d moved to California to pursue a care er in music, but he soon fell on hard times and ended up living on the street for more than a decade.
“It was the weirdest thing to me,” Peterson recalled later. “I saw beauty on the face of a man who hadn’t shaved in probably a year, had overgrown finger nails, probably hadn’t had a shower in close to a year. But his story, the life inside of him, inspired me.”And even though Peterson, a graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Art, hadn’t picked up a paintbrush in about eight years, he found himself asking if he could paint Faris’s portrait. Faris said yes.
Peterson’s connection with Faris led him to form Faces In the Community(FIC), a nonprofit organization focused on befriending and painting portraits of members of the community who are unhoused. Peterson sells the portraits sign atured by both subject and artist for a few thousand dollars, splitting the proceeds(收入) and putting half into what he calls a”love account”for his model. He then helps people use the money to get back on their feet. Of course, Faris was the first to benefit from FIC.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Seeing his portrait, the homeless man was moved to tears.

【解析】本文是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了一位年轻的美国女孩通过回收薯条包装袋来制作睡袋,帮助无家可归者并保护环境的故事。
1.细节理解题。根据第一段的首句“Eradajere Oleita thinks she may have a partial solution to two of our country’s persistent problems: garbage and poverty. (厄拉杰雷·奥莱塔认为她或许能部分解决我们国家两个长期存在的问题:垃圾和贫困)”和尾句“Rather than toss your empty chip bags into the trash, donate them so she can turn them into sleeping bags for the homeless. (与其把你的空薯片袋扔进垃圾桶,不如把它们捐出去,这样她就可以把它们变成无家可归者的睡袋)”可知,Oleita通过回收薯片袋来制作睡袋来解决垃圾和贫困问题。故选D。
2.词句猜测题。根据划线词后文“in soapy hot water, they slice them open, lay them flat, and iron them together. (在肥皂热水中,他们把它们切开,平铺,再把它们熨烫在一起)”及常识可知,把薯片袋放在肥皂热水中,应该是为了清理和消毒。由此推知,划线词sanitize与clean意思接近。故选A。
3.细节理解题。根据第三段中的“The result is a sleeping bag that is waterproof, lightweight, and easy to carry around. (其结果是一种防水、轻便、便于携带的睡袋)”可知,这种睡袋既实用又轻便。故选C。
4.推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“It’s a powerful reminder that environmental injustice and poverty often go hand in hand. As Oleita told hourdetroit.com, I think it’s time to show connections between all of these issues. (这有力地提醒我们,环境不公往往与贫困相伴而行。正如Oleita告诉hourdetroit.com网站的那样,我认为是时候展示所有这些问题之间的联系了)”可推知,垃圾问题和贫苦问题是密不可分,可以同时解决的。故选C。

【参考答案】
Everyone has an unforgettable experience. My most memorable was the first time to volunteer at the Happiness Nursing Home last summer holiday.
As a member of volunteers, I got up early because I was too excited to sleep. In the morning, we volunteers brought some flowers and fresh fruit. As we arrived at the Happiness Nursing Home, we sent them our best wishes too. How happy they were! Then we cleaned the windows and swept the floor for them. After that, some of us performed activities for them, such as singing songs and dancing. Some of us read newspaper for them. Some of us chatted with them. When it was time for us volunteers to leave, they were grateful for our kindness.
From this meaningful activity, I found that we are supposed to care for the old and respect them. In our daily life, we should offer our seats to them on buses. And we should treat our own grandparents more kindly.
