My son’s seventh birthday is approaching, so conversation at my house has naturally turned to organizing his party.
For his sixth birthday, we booked the local trampoline(蹦床) park. This worked out well. But the whole event cost us hundreds of pounds. This year, I’m trying to convince him that the dinosaur-themed park down the road offers just as much fun—and you don’t even need to wear special socks! This will be cheaper, because we aren’t required to hire a space—we can simply buy tickets for his mates.
But I still keep pondering over one thing—party bags. Why should a bunch of seven-year-olds, who have already been treated to a day out and a mountain of sugar, also be handed a bag full of pound-shop gifts for simply bothering to show up?
Party bags are an environmental disaster. I reckon my son attends 20 parties per year, and at each party there are 20 kids in attendance, which means 400 plastic bags in total. Within these 400 bags are perhaps 800 plastic toys, almost all of which fall apart on the journey home and then get binned instantly. The waste is shocking, and I don’t want to be part of it.
I know there are some party bag alternatives: one couple I know covered a table with Mr. Men books and got the kids to choose one each. At another party, I saw the hosts fill a bucket with soft toys and crumpled newspaper, and do a lucky dip (抽奖). Admirable efforts.
Even if that is a nice try, and even if the contents in the party bags don’t fall apart, so what? Will our guests think more highly of our child because of the party bags from our party? Will my child’s ability to make and keep friends be improved?
Well, the tradition for kid’s party bags ends with me, and it ends here, and it ends now. Who’s with me?
24. Why does the author recommend the dinosaur-themed park?
A. Because it’s more enjoyable. B. Because it provides socks.
C. Because it can reduce cost. D. Because it offers free tickets.
25. What may be put in party bags?
A. Gifts brought by guests. B. Gifts prepared by hosts.
C. Gifts distributed by parks. D. Gift a donated by charities.
26. What is the author’s attitude towards party bags?
A. Intolerant. B. Objective. C. Favorable. D. In different.
27. What do the underlined words “get binned” mean in paragraph 4?
A. Be recycled. B. Be repaired. C. Be thrown away. D. Be given away.

Keeping a language alive can strengthen people’s sense of identity and most importantly lead to the preservation of a whole culture. This is probably why a group of Cherokee music artists decided to create a music album (唱片) exclusively in the Cherokee language, a highly endangered Native American language. Currently, there are fewer than 2,000 fluent speakers of the language remaining in the world, and the number is declining every year.
The album, tilted DOAP oaV and pronounced ‘Ah’ ‘Nuh’ ‘Duh’ ‘Nah’ ‘Lees’ ‘Gi’, means “Performers” in English. It is comprised of a range of contemporary styles, including Pop, Reggae, Country, Heavy Metal, Hip Hop, and Folk. With a planned release date of Labor Day weekend, the record company is using the platform of the National Cherokee Holiday to give this album as much exposure as possible.
Jeremy Charles, a key figure in getting this album off the ground, has said that the “music will shine a spotlight on Cherokee artists and speakers, and increase exposure to our culture and language worldwide”. He aims for the album to be an inspiration to the next generation of Cherokee language learners. Featuring 12 Cherokee artists ranging from ages 14 to 50, you can see how this album is going to do a lot for the promotion of Cherokee music and can inspire people of any age to make music that connects with their heritage (遗产).
The youngest contributor on the album, Lillian Charles, is only in 8th grade but had a major contribution to the Goth-pop song “Circus”—a song she wrote at the age of 12. It originally written in English, she worked with translators Bobbie Smith and Kathy Sierra to be able to fully express herself in Cherokee.
Projects like the DOOAP oaV album bring a modern approach to revitalizing language and culture and encourage a younger audience, to get involved and start learning the Cherokee language. On average, a native language is lost forever every two weeks, and these people want to make sure that the Cherokee language isn’t one of them.
28 What can we learn about the album from paragraph 2?
A. It has various musical styles.
B. It is titled Performers in English.
C. It sings high praise of Labor Day.
D. It was exposed to the public by chance.
29. What’s Jeremy Charles’s expectation of the album?
A. It will make a huge profit for the record company.
B. It can help the 12 artists rise to fame overnight.
C. It will satisfy the fans’ demand for pop music.
D. It can fuel the youth’s interest in Cherokee language.
30. Which can best replace the underlined word “revitalizing” in the last paragraph?
A. Translating. B. Reviewing. C. Restoring. D. Creating.
31. What’s the best title of the text?
A. Alarming! The Cherokee Language is Dying
B. Amazing! An 8th Grader is Releasing an Album
C. Bringing Music to Life with Modern Technology
D. Preserving a Language Through the Power of Music
D
New technologies tend to cause a cycle of concern, disorder, and conflict before eventually being accepted. Recent writings about artificial intelligence (AI) and other advances in computer science suggest that we are preparing to welcome the final stage of this latest round of invention.
The Last Human Job, sociologist Allison Pugh’s new book centered on caregiving and human connection in the age of automation, warns readers against unreserved acceptance of these technological advances, citing “connective labor” as valuable human work that will not be easily replaced by algorithms (算法). “Absent from discussions about AI and automation,” Pugh argues, “is the impact that these systems might have on the emotional understandings we build of ourselves and others.”
Pugh sets the stage by arguing for the value of human connection and the importance of both seeing and being seen by others. “Practitioners (从业者) said they gained a sense of purpose simply from the opportunity of observing people at their most defenseless,” she observes. She then provides a summary of how care work is being increasingly automated, showing how quantification and measurement have taken over many aspects of human-facing jobs, leaving little room for doctors, teachers, and others to build connection.
“When one goes to a doctor or a teacher, the encounter is full of the potential for shame, a risk that makes it all the more powerful when practitioners show empathic (同理心的) reflection,” writes Pugh. In chapter 8, she explains how such interactions can be done right. Research conducted by herself and others identifies three key aspects supporting connective labor: “relational design”, or how people are set up to interact with one another; “connective culture,” or shared practices and beliefs that influence how people interact; and “resource distribution,” which includes time given for interaction, worker-to-client rates, and the extent of technology and data use, among other factors.
Pugh concludes by arguing that we need a social movement for connection. “We need to fight for what we might call our ‘social health’,” she maintains.
32. What is the main concern of Allison Pugh’s new book?
A. The impact of AI on future employment. B. The approach to living and working with AI.
C. The increasing role of technology in caregiving. D. The value of connective labor in the age of automation.
33. Why does the author mention “practitioners” in paragraph 3?
A. To explain how to do care work. B. To argue against the automation technology.
C. To prove the significance of human connection. D. To discuss the challenges of privacy in caregiving.
34. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. The encounter. B. The shame. C. The risk. D. The potential.
35. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The overview of chapter 8. B. The effective way to interact.
C. The new trend of caregiving. D. The factors of avoiding shame.

Henry Crawley was a cab driver who drove long circuits every day. His job kept him away from family for long hours. It was the topic of many quarrels he had gotten into with his wife, who understood why he was away so often but could not resist the urge to cry out for her husband’s physical absence.
To make up for not always being there for his daughter, Leslie, Henry was determined to make it to her 16th birthday party on time. On the day of her birthday, Henry conveyed as many passengers as he could as usual. When he finally finished the last order to a distant town outside the city, Henry rushed back to his city for the small party.
However, he got caught up in a heavy snowstorm that restricted mobility on his way back. Stubbornly, he decided he would press on anyway and continued driving even though he had to go at a snail’s (蜗牛的) pace.
It was 6: 00 pm and Leslie’s party started at 6: 30 pm. He complained about the weather as he fastened his eyes on the slippery road. As time passed, he got closer to the city. Suddenly, he spotted a person sitting beside the road. He stopped his car to check on it, and found it was an elderly woman who was unable to speak but almost freezing. Her bedroom clothes told him she must be from the town nearby he just drove past.
Henry decided to take the woman to her town, but he remembered that his wife would be upset with him if he missed his daughter’s birthday party. He called his wife to explain things. As he predicted, she said nothing, ending up the call. That made him uneasy and almost turn back to his car. But he knew that he could not leave the woman helpless. “I’d want someone to care for my wife or daughter if they ended up in such a tough situation,” he said to himself.

W:No. I’m just fascinated by Russian itself. I have asked many friends for advice. I remember you are a Russian major, right?
M:Yeah. Do you have trouble with pronunciation, or anything else?
W:In fact, I listen lo tapes and read Russian aloud every morning, so I think my pronunciation is not bad. Besides, I’m good at memorizing the words, so my vocabulary is also good. The problem is that I really don’t understand the use of grammar.
M:It is essential for beginners to lay a solid foundation. You should do more grammar exercises and give yourself time for reflection. Practice makes perfect.
W:I see. Thank you.

W: Thrifty Car Rental. Can I help you?
M: Yeah. My friend recommended your company to me. She rented your car and went to Texas for sightseeing last month. I’m going to California for a conference this weekend and it’s a short drive from Nevada to get there, so I have to rent a car for two days.

W: How about $10 off?

W: Well, in that case, I would ask $150 a day.
M: Deal.
W: How would you like to pay, by check or bank card?
M: I’m sorry I only carry some cash on me.
W: Okay. And remember to return the car with a full tank of gas.

B. Only half of the people were anxious.
C. 85% of the people handled their anxiety well.
19. What may happen to you when you are under stress?

20. What is the speaker’s last suggestion?
A. Focus on something else.
B. Skip your normal routine.
C. Avoid searching for symptoms online.
A 19. B 20. C
Not so long ago, I had a couple of physical checkups, which — thankfully — turned out to be nothing serious. But for those ten long days while I was waiting for the results, I was a nervous wreck. Frankly, I could have handled it better.
Don’t Be Hard on Yourself
We all cope differently in times of stress. A 2017 US study of people waiting for medical results found that just under half reported a “change in emotional state” — and 85 percent of this group said they were anxious.
Check the Small Stuff
If you’re expecting a phone call, check which number you’ll be called on and at approximately what time. If you have an in-person appointment, plan your journey in advance. It sounds obvious, but it’s these all-important details that tend to slip through the net, particularly when we’re under stress.
Try to Distract Yourself
Sticking to your normal routine is usually the best option. Being physically active gives your brain something else to focus on, which helps lower stress and anxiety levels.
Don’t Consult “Dr. Google”
Every time a scary new thought pops into your head, it’s all too easy to start googling symptoms and potential outcomes. But remember, whatever information you find online won’t be specific to your situation and could well be inaccurate or misleading.

C 25. B 26. A 27. C
根据第二段中“But the whole event cost us hundreds of pounds. This year, I’m trying to convince him that the dinosaur-themed park down the road offers just as much fun—and you don’t even need to wear special socks! This will be cheaper, because we aren’t required to hire a space—we can simply buy tickets for his mates.( 但是整个活动花了我们几百英镑。今年,我试图说服他,沿路的恐龙主题公园提供了同样多的乐趣——而且你甚至不需要穿特殊的袜子!这样会更便宜,因为我们不需要租用场地——我们可以直接给他的同伴买票。)”可知,作者推荐恐龙主题公园的原因是它可以降低成本,故选C。
【25题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“Why should a bunch of seven-year-olds, who have already been treated to a day out and a mountain of sugar, also be handed a bag full of pound-shop gifts for simply bothering to show up?(为什么一群已经享受了一天外出和堆积如山的糖果的七岁小孩,还要因为仅仅露一面就得到一袋子的廉价商店礼物呢?)”和第四段中“I reckon my son attends 20 parties per year, and at each party there are 20 kids in attendance, which means 400 plastic bags in total.(我估计我儿子每年参加20个聚会,每个聚会都有20个孩子参加,也就是说总共有400个塑料袋。)”和第五段中“I know there are some party bag alternatives: one couple I know covered a table with Mr. Men books and got the kids to choose one each.(我知道有一些派对包的替代品: 我认识的一对夫妇把《奇先生妙小姐》的书放在一张桌子上,让孩子们每人选一本。)”
根据最后一段中“Well, the tradition for kid’s party bags ends with me, and it ends here, and it ends now. Who’s with me?(给孩子准备派对礼物的传统到我为止,到此为止,到此为止。谁和我一起?)”可推知,作者不能忍受派对包,故选A。
【27题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线短语所在句子“Within these 400 bags are perhaps 800 plastic toys, almost all of which fall apart on the journey home and then get binned instantly.(在这400个袋子里大概有800个塑料玩具,几乎所有的玩具在回家的路上都会散架,然后立即get binned。)”和划线短语下文“The waste is shocking, and I don’t want to be part of it.(这种浪费令人震惊,我不想成为其中一份子。)”

28. What can we learn about the album from paragraph 2?
A. It has various musical styles.
B It is titled Performers in English.
C. It sings high praise of Labor Day.
D. It was exposed to the public by chance.
29. What’s Jeremy Charles’s expectation of the album?
A. It will make a huge profit for the record company.
B. It can help the 12 artists rise to fame overnight.
C. It will satisfy the fans’ demand for pop music.
D. It can fuel the youth’s interest in Cherokee language.
30. Which can best replace the underlined word “revitalizing” in the last paragraph?
A. Translating. B. Reviewing. C. Restoring. D. Creating.
31. What’s the best title of the text?
A. Alarming! The Cherokee Language is Dying
B. Amazing! An 8th Grader is Releasing an Album
C. Bringing Music to Life with Modern Technology
D. Preserving a Language Through the Power of Music
A 29. D 30. C 31. D

由画线单词下文“encourage a younger audience, to get involved and start learning the Cherokee language(鼓励年轻观众参与进来,开始学习Cherokee语)”可知,这些项目鼓励年轻观众开始学习Cherokee语,这说明这些项目能振兴语言和文化,即恢复语言和文化,由此可推知,划线单词revitalizing与C项“Restoring(恢复)”意思相近,故选C。
通读全文,尤其是第一段中“Keeping a language alive can strengthen people’s sense of identity and most importantly lead to the preservation of a whole culture. This is probably why a group of Cherokee music artists decided to create a music album(唱片) exclusively in the Cherokee language, a highly endangered Native American language.(保持一种语言的活力可以增强人们的认同感,最重要的是可以保存整个文化。这可能就是为什么一群Cherokee族音乐艺术家决定专门用这种高度濒危的印第安语言Cherokee语制作一张音乐专辑)”可知,文章主要讲述了一群Cherokee族音乐艺术家专门用高度濒危的印第安语言Cherokee语制作一张音乐专辑,以此来保护这种语言,D项“通过音乐的力量来保护语言”适合做文章标题,故选D。

New technologies tend to cause a cycle of concern disorder, and conflict before eventually being accepted.
32 What is the main concern of Allison Pugh’s new book?
D 33. C 34. A 35. B

根据第二段中“The Last Human Job, sociologist Allison Pugh’s new book centered on caregiving and human connection in the age of automation, warns readers against unreserved acceptance of these technological advances, citing “connective labor” as valuable human work that will not be easily replaced by algorithms (算法). (社会学家Allison Pugh的新书《最后的人类工作》聚焦于自动化时代的看护和人际关系,该书警告读者不要毫无保留地接受这些技术进步,称“连接性劳动”是有价值的人类工作,不会轻易被算法取代)”可知,这本新书主要关注的是自动化时代连接性劳动的价值。故选D项。
【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“Pugh sets the stage by arguing for the value of human connection and the importance of both seeing and being seen by others. “Practitioners (从业者) said they gained a sense of purpose simply from the opportunity of observing people at their most defenseless,” she observes. (Pugh通过论证人际关系的价值以及看到和被他人看到的重要性奠定了基础。她说:“从业者说,他们获得了一种目的感,仅仅是因为有机会观察人们最无助的时候。”)”可知,此处先指出Pugh论证了人际关系的价值,以及看到和被他人看到的重要性,然后提到从业者的想法,他们通过看到他人而获得目的感。由此推知,作者提到从业者是为了证明人际关系的重要性。故选C项。
【34题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词的上文“When one goes to a doctor or a teacher, the encounter is full of the potential for shame (当一个人去看医生或老师时,这种相遇充满了羞耻的可能性)”和下文“all the more powerful when practitioners show empathic (同理心的) reflection (当从业者表现出共情反思时,这一切都更加强大)”可推知,正是与他人的相遇有可能会有羞耻感,所以从业者具备的共情反思才会使遭遇变得强大,划线词指代的是前面提到的相遇。故选A项。
根据第四段中“Research conducted by herself and others identifies three key aspects supporting connective labor: “relational design”, or how people are set up to interact with one another; “connective culture,” or shared practices and beliefs that influence how people interact; and “resource distribution,” which includes time given for interaction, worker-to-client rates, and the extent of technology and data use, among other factors. (她和其他人进行的研究确定了支持连接性劳动的三个关键方面:“关系设计”,即人们如何与他人互动;“连接性的文化”,或影响人们互动方式的共同实践和信仰;“资源分配”包括互动时间、员工对客户的比率、技术和数据使用的程度等因素)”可知,本段主要介绍了连接性劳动中有效的互动方式。故选B项。

Do you want to live in a healthy lifestyle? Practicing yoga is one of the best choices. Yoga has a well-deserved fame for helping to improve balance and flexibility and for gaining calm and relaxation. ___36___. Here’s more about how doing yoga is a complete body and mind workout.
Reducing Stress, Reducing Pounds
Several studies have confirmed that doing yoga does reduce cortisol (皮质醇) levels.___37___. It can also increase your desire for high-fat and high-sugar foods and drinks while reducing your muscle mass.
____38____
In a 2016 study, participants involved in practicing yoga realized that they tended to notice not only the amount of food they ate, but what type of foods they ate and the impact of eating those foods as well. “Subjects are reported becoming aware of the effect of certain foods on their bodies during their yoga practice, including sugar, dairy, meat and alcohol,” wrote the authors of the study.
Making Weight Loss Last
___39___. This can be attained through improvements in sadness tolerance, mindfulness and self-sympathy. For example, if someone experiences improvements in mindfulness, they may be less likely to ‘mindlessly’ eat in response to emotions such as boredom, stress, anger and other external stimulation like the presence of tasty foods.
Choosing the Right Type
Ultimately, the best yoga is the practice that fits you—the one you’ll commit to. There are now many accessible styles of yoga that meet you where you are no matter what your weight, age, physical challenge or background. ___40___.

B. Moving Well, Eating Well
C. Everybody and every body can benefit from a certain style
D. Yoga is also well-known for helping you burn more calories
E. High levels of cortisol, a stress hormone, can lead to an increase in fat
F. Another study shows that someone in a more positive mood are less likely to overeat
G. Recent research shows that yoga may help to improve long-term weight loss outcomes
D 37. E 38. B 39. G 40. C
根据前文“Yoga has a well-deserved fame for helping to improve balance and flexibility and for gaining calm and relaxation.(瑜伽有一个当之无愧的名声,有助于提高平衡和灵活性,并获得冷静和放松)”以及后文“Here’s more about how doing yoga is a complete body and mind workout.(这里有更多关于如何做瑜伽是一个完整的身心锻炼)”可知,此处是在讲述瑜伽的好处,所以D项“Yoga is also well-known for helping you burn more calories(瑜伽还能帮助你燃烧更多的卡路里)”符合文意,描述的是瑜伽的好处,与上下文承接自然。故选D项。
根据前文“Several studies have confirmed that doing yoga does reduce cortisol (皮质醇) levels.(一些研究已经证实,做瑜伽确实能降低皮质醇水平)”推知,设空是对本句进一步说明,所以E项“High levels of cortisol, a stress hormone, can lead to an increase in fat(高水平的皮质醇,一种压力荷尔蒙,会导致脂肪增加)”符合文意,其中cortisol为同词复现。故选E项。
分析设空可知,空处是本段的小标题,是对本段的高度概括,根据下文“In a 2016 study, participants involved in practicing yoga realized that they tended to notice not only the amount of food they ate, but what type of foods they ate and the impact of eating those foods as well. “Subjects are reported becoming aware of the effect of certain foods on their bodies during their yoga practice, including sugar, dairy, meat and alcohol,” wrote the authors of the study.(在2016年的一项研究中,练习瑜伽的参与者意识到,他们不仅会注意自己吃了多少食物,还会注意自己吃了什么类型的食物,以及吃这些食物的影响。
分析设空,位于段尾,是本段的总结句,根据前文“Ultimately, the best yoga is the practice that fits you—the one you’ll commit to. There are now many accessible styles of yoga that meet you where you are no matter what your weight, age, physical challenge or background.(最后,最好的瑜伽是适合你的练习——你会坚持的练习。现在,无论你的体重、年龄、身体挑战或背景如何,都有许多适合你的瑜伽风格)”可知,本段主要讲述了选择合适的瑜伽风格,所以C项“Everybody and every body can benefit from a certain style(每个人都可以从某种风格中受益)”符合文意,是对前文的总结。故选C项。

Without any hesitation, Henry was determined to help the stranger. He lifted the woman with all his might and settled her in the back seat of his car. Noticing she was shivering from the cold, Henry turned up his car heater to warm the freezing woman. Eventually, he brought the woman to a hospital in the town. Exactly as he had suspected, the nurses immediately recognized the woman. They revealed that the woman had Alzheimer’s disease, which led her to have trouble in communicating and always fail to find her way home. Having hearing that, Henry knew he really did the right thing. After that, Henry made his way home immediately.
Upon his arrival, it was late at night and Henry became more uneasy. He parked the car in the driveway and entered his house. There was no sign that there had been any celebration, as everything for the birthday party was well organized. Seeing her father return safe and sound, Leslie ran into his arms happily. He apologized to her that he couldn’t make it to her party on time. Little did Leslie care about that. Turning around, “I’m sorry I was away for so long, but I didn’t plan to be,” he said, expecting an annoyed response. Nevertheless, he got a hug instead from his wife who was proud of her husband’s kind gesture. The couple then celebrated their daughter’s birthday joyfully late at night.
