“I will think of it.” It is easy to say this, but do you know what great things have come from thinking?
Sir Isaac Newton was sitting in his garden when he saw an apple fall from a tree. He began to think and tried to find out why the apple fell. Then he discovered how the sun, moon, and stars are kept in their places.
A boy named James Watt sat quietly by the fire, watching the lid of the kettle move up and down. He wanted to find out why the steam in the kettle moved the lid. From that time he went on thinking and thinking. And when he became a man, he improved the steam engine(蒸汽机) so much that it could easily do the work of many horses.
James Ferguson was a poor boy. Once, seeing the inside of a watch, he wondered. “Why should I not make a watch?” But how could he get the materials to make the mainspring(钟表的主发条)? He soon found he could make it with whalebone(鲸骨). He then made a wooden clock which kept good time. His motto(座右铭) was “I will think of it.” And he made his thoughts useful to himself and the world.

Think of some great minds you like. You will probably find that their success didn’t come easily. As “Father of Hybrid Rice (杂交水稻)”, Yuan Longping got over great difficulties and spent his whole life working to increase rice production and helping to feed the country with the largest population.
Wu Mengchao, the “Father of Chinese Hepatobiliary Surgery (肝胆外科)”, focused on saving people’s lives for nearly eighty years. He did more than 16,000 operations during his life. Holding the surgeon’s knife for such a long time deformed his fingers but he still kept doing operations. Wu once said, “It would be my greatest happiness if I could work at the operating table until the last moment of my life.”
In 1969, in order to solve the problem of treating malaria(疟疾), Tu Youyou, worked as head of a research team. They did different kinds of experiments. However, the results were not satisfactory. Instead of giving up, they kept trying. Finally, in 1972, they made it! In 2015, at the age of 85, she received the Nobel Prize.
Thomas Edison, the inventor of the light bulb believed that every failure was a step towards success. He once said, “If I find 10, I haven’t failed.I am not discouraged, because every wrong try is another step forward.”
Sometimes, their success was a surprise, even to themselves, even after a long time of their hard work. The famous scientist Alexander Fleming said, “When I woke up just after daybreak on 28th September, 1928. I just began another busy day with my research as I did many days and nights before. And I certainly didn’t plan to make a great difference to all medicine by discovering the world’s first antibiotic(抗生素). But I guess that was exactly what I did.”
Some people only became successful after their deaths. The artist Vincent Van Gogh only sold one painting all through his life and that was to a friend. But he kept painting and he painted more than 2000 artworks in the following ten years. Now his paintings are very popular and they sell for millions of pounds.

A horse fair was an interesting place. There were young horses and many beautiful horses from the country. But there were also a lot of poor and thin horses.
At the horse fair there was a man with a gentle voice and kind grey eyes. He offered 23 pounds for me, but the salesman refused. Then a man with a very loud voice came. I was afraid he was going to buy me, but he walked away. Then the grey-eyed man came back again and said, “I’ll give you 24 pounds to buy him.”
“Done,” said the salesman. “He’s an excellent horse and if you want him for cab (出租马车) work, he can help you earn more than you pay for him. The horse is well worth the price.”
Half an hour later we set off for London, along country roads, until we came to that great city. There were streets to the right, and streets to the left. We went into one of the small streets, and then into a very narrow street, with small and old houses.
My owner stopped at a house. The door opened, and a woman, a little girl and a boy came out.
“Is he gentle, Dad?”
“Yes, Dolly, as gentle as a little cat. And you can pat him.”
Dolly, the little girl, patted my shoulder without fear. It felt so good! They led me into a comfortable, clean room, and after a delicious meal I lay down to sleep, thinking “I’m going to be very happy here”.
My new owner’s name was Jerry. His wife was called Polly and they had two children, Harry and Dolly. The next morning they came to see me. I loved it when they patted me and spoke in gentle voices.
“Let’s call him ‘Jack’, after the old horse, shall we, Harry?” said Dolly.
“Yes, sounds great!” said Harry.
The first week of my life as Jack, the London cab horse, was very hard. The noise, the people and the traffic on the streets scared me. But Jerry was a very good driver, and that helped me a lot. Jerry soon found that I was ready to work hard and do my best, and he didn’t whip (鞭打) me.

The human brain weighs about 1.4 kilograms, but it can hold much more in formation than most computers. However, there is another difference between humans and computers. Computers don’t forget information they are given, but humans often do. No one remembers every thing, and luckily we don’t usually have to. 41 Here are some suggestions.
Try to use new information immediately. For example, if you meet someone who says “Hi! I’m Carlos.”, don’t just say “Hello”. Repeat the person’s name. Say “Hello, Carlos.”
Break a big number into smaller parts. For example, it’s hard to memorize 109244153. But if you break it into three parts—109/244/153—it becomes easier.
42 This will help you keep it in mind longer, especially for memorizing formulas (公式) or facts.
Always review information. 43 For example, before you go to sleep, it’s a good idea to review the new things you learned that day.
44 It is always easier to remember things through discussions. You can have a discussion about what’s right and what’s wrong, and it will lead to the right answer.
“Never tell yourself that you have a bad memory. You can always do something to help improve your memory. And everyone’s memory gets better if they use it often enough.
45 If you follow them, you are certain to improve your memory.
A.If you bring what you’ve learned back to your mind, they become easier to remember.
B.All of the suggestions are helpful.
C.Discuss with a friend.
D.Write out what you need to remember over and over again.
E.But everyone can improve their memory if they want to.

Dear Sam,
In China, family rules are an important part of our traditional culture, so today I’m writing to tell you something about my family rules.
Firstly, we should respect the old and take care of the young as well as being polite to others. Therefore, we can always get on well with others. Secondly, we need to be honest and keep learning. Only in this way, can we keep up with times. It is never too old to learn. Thirdly, we should sleep on time and never stay up late. Especially teenagers, it is important for us to develop good life habits. Finally, we should care about our health and do sports. Everyone in my family should do sports at least twice a week.
I think my family rules are strict but useful. With them, I form the good habit of exercising and now I am stronger and healthier than before. I will keep following them.
What about you? Do you have any family rules? I’m looking forward to hearing from you soon!
Yours,
Li Hua
