Teaching Design for “The king and the rice” Teacher: Guo Li Ting Teaching Material:The king and the rice Type:Reading 1 I. Analysis of the teaching material: I will analyze the passage from 3 dimensions: What, How and Why. What: The passage is a short story between the king and the old man. It belongs to Human & Society. Why: The writer wants to teach us some lessons by the short story. How: There are 6 paragraphs in the story. In the story, the writer uses the past tense to tell a story and some dialogues to make the story real and convincing. II. The analysis of the target learners: The students are from Grade 8. They are energetic and imaginative. It’s easy for them to understand the meanings of the story, but they may have difficulty in knowing the features and the truth of the story. III. Teaching objectives: By the end of the class, the students will be able to: 1. pronounce and understand the meanings of the new words. 2. comprehend the story by using some reading strategies like prediction, skimming and scanning. 3. develop their creative, critical and logical thinking competence. 4. attach importance to learning Maths, being modest and thinking twice before making promises. 5. be active in cooperating with others and be confident in English learning. IV. Teaching key points & difficult points: Key points: Understand the main idea of the whole story including the six elements and detailed information. Difficult points: Train comprehensive abilities through creative, critical and logical thinking process. V. Teaching methods: Task-based teaching method and Communicative teaching method VI. Teaching aids: Multi-media, blackboard and worksheets VII. Teaching theories: Core Competence of English Subject and the View of English Learning Activities . Teaching procedures: Stages Activities Purposes Level Pre-reading Step 1. lead-in Have a free talk to lead in the topic. Arouse students’ interest and lead in the topic naturally and directly. 学习理解 (感知与注意) Step 2. Prediction Predict from the picture and the title of the passage. 1. Develop students’ predictive abilities and learn from the title and the picture. 2. Pave the way for reading. While-reading Step 3. Read the dialogues and think about the personalities of the two characters. 5. Try to read the words out with feelings and understanding. 6. Think more about the personalities of the king. Help students understand the ending of the story intuitively. Help students practise stress and intonation to feel and understand the personalities of the characters.
