B It’s been more than 60 years since Jane Goodall started her pioneering work. In 1960, she was chosen to go to what is now Tanzania and study the little-known world of chimpanzees. Since then, Goodall has received many awards and honorary degrees as a world-famous conservationist Now, Goodall has received an unusual honor. She is becoming a toy — a Barbie doll. Goodall may not have expected to become a Barbie at 88 years old — but it’s not just any doll, it’s made out of recycled plastic. And Barbie is partnering with the Jane Goodall Foundation and its Roots & Shoots program which inspires young people to protect animals and the environment. “You know, the main message is that every day you live, you make an influence on the planet and you get to choose what sort of influence you make,” Goodall said. “There was a little boy of 7 in Burundi, and I had given a talk to the school and he came up to me and said, ‘If I pick out a piece of trash every day, it will make a difference, won’t it?’ And I said, ‘Yes it will. And suppose you persuade (劝说) 10 of your friends to pick up a piece of rubbish every day.’ He said, ‘Oh, that would really make a difference and then they could all get 10 of their friends, couldn’t they?’ Goodall said, “So, that’s it. The cumulative (积累的) effect of small actions can lead to big change.” She’s been inspiring young people for decades, but now, newer generations will get to know Jane Goodall. “I sincerely hope that it will help to create more interest in the natural world,” she said about the Barbie. “Because hopefully, you know, they’ll learn more about me through the doll. And that will get them interested. It doesn’t really matter if they have a career in conservation, as long as they pay attention to conservation in their daily lives.” 4. What is the intention of Barbie’s making a doll of Jane Goodall? A To give Jane Goodall a surprise. B. To test the quality of recycled plastic. C. To encourage environmental protection. D. To start a cooperative research program. 5. What idea does Goodall’s conversation with the little boy mainly convey? A. Everyone can make an impact on the planet. B. Children will make the future world a better place. C. Every child should pick up a piece of rubbish every day. D. The accumulation of tiny actions makes a great difference. 6. What is Goodall’s attitude towards the Barbie doll? A. Critical. B. Supportive. C. Disapproving. D. Doubtful. 7. Which of the following could be the best title for the text? A. Jane Goodall’s Good Expectation of Nature Conservation B. Young People’s Strong Interest in Nature Conservation C. Great Popularity of a New Barbie Doll of Jane Goodall D. Inspire Newer Generations to Care About Conservation Through a Doll C Popularization has in some cases changed the original meaning of emotional (情感的) intelligence. Many people now misunderstand emotional intelligence as almost everything desirable in a person's makeup that cannot be measured by an IQ test, such as character, motivation, confidence, mental stability, optimism and “people skills.” Research has shown that emotional skills may contribute to some of these qualities, but most of them move far beyond skill-based emotional intelligence. We prefer to describe emotional intelligence as a specific set of skills that can be used for either good or bad purposes. The ability to accurately understand how others are feeling may be used by a doctor to find how best to help her patients, while a cheater might use it to control potential victims. Being emotionally intelligent does not necessarily make one a moral person. Although popular beliefs regarding emotional intelligence run far ahead of what research can reasonably support, the overall effects of the publicity have been more beneficial than harmful. The most positive aspect of this popularization is a new and much needed emphasis (重视) on emotion by employers, educators and others interested in promoting social well-being. The popularization of emotional intelligence has helped both the public and researchers re-evaluate the functionality of emotions and how they serve people adaptively in everyday life. Although the continuing popular appeal of emotional intelligence is desirable, we hope that such attention will excite a greater interest in the scientific and scholarly study of emotion. It is our hope that in coming decades, advances in science will offer new perspectives (视角) from which to study how people manage their lives. Emotional intelligence, with its focus on both head and heart, may serve to point us in the right direction. 8. What is a common misunderstanding of emotional intelligence? A. It can be measured by an IQ test. B. It helps to exercise a person’s mind. C. It includes a set of emotional skills. D. It refers to a person’s positive qualities. 9. Why does the author mention “doctor” and “cheater” in paragraph 2? A To explain a rule. B. To clarify a concept. C. To present a fact. D. To make a prediction. 10. What is the author’s attitude to the popularization of emotional intelligence? A. Favorable. B. Intolerant. C. Doubtful. D. Unclear. 11. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about concerning emotional intelligence? A. Its appeal to the public. B. Expectations for future studies. C. Its practical application. D. Scientists with new perspectives. D Plenty, an agricultural technology company in San Francisco, is reinventing farms and farming. Nater Storye, the company’s chief science officer says the future of the farms will be vertical (垂直的) and indoors, so food can be grown anywhere in the world all year round, and farms will employ robots and artificial intelligence (AI) to improve the quality of growth for fruits and vegetables. Plenty does all those things but uses 95% less water and 99% less land. As AI is on the rise, farmers on flat farms have been using new tools to make farming better or easier. In recent years, they have been using drones (无人机) and robots to improve efficiency. However, flat farms still use a lot of water and land, while a Plenty’s vertical farm can produce the same quantity of fruits and vegetables as a 720-acre flat farm, but on only 2 acres. Plenty’s climate-controlled indoor farm has rows of plants growing vertically. There are LED lights shining on them, robots moving them around, and AI managing all the variables of water, temperature, and light. The conditions are so good that the production per acre is 400 times higher than that of an outdoor farm. Another advantage of vertical farming is that the fruits and vegetables are grown at a warehouse nearby instead of 1,000 miles away or more from a city. That means many transportation miles are saved, which can reduce millions of tons of greenhouse gases every year and the price of fruits and vegetables will also go down. Imported (进口的) fruits and vegetables are more expensive, so poor people in society are at an extreme nutritional disadvantage. Vertical farms could cope with this problem. Also, Plenty’s farms grow organic food without using herbicides (除草剂) or pesticides. They recycle all the water used, even catching the water in the air. The best farm in San Francisco is using 100% renewable energy. Moreover, all the packaging is 100% recyclable, made of recycled plastic and specially designed to keep the food fresh longer to reduce food waste. Ideally, the company will branch out, opening farms across the country and beyond. 12. What can we learn from the first two paragraphs? A. Robots and AI used on vertical farms can quicken the growth of plants. B. Fruits and vegetables grown on vertical farms are more tasty. C. Both land and water can be saved on vertical farms. D. Plenty is the first company to grow crops on vertical farms. 13. What does the underlined phrase “cope with” in paragraph 4 mean? A. Register. B. Improve. C. Present. D. Solve. 14. What can we infer about Plenty’s future vertical farms from the text? A. They will have more farms. B. They will only be run by robots and AI. C. They will bring about terrible problems. D. They will completely take the place of flat farms. 15. What is the main purpose of the text? A. To question the possibility of vertical farming B. To show the technologies of vertical farming. C. To discuss the potential problems of vertical farming D. To introduce and explain the benefits of vertical farming. 第二节(共5小题: 每小题2.5分, 满分 12.5分) 阅读下面短文、从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项. 选项中有两项为多余选项, They say once you learn to ride a bike, you never forget. My New Brother I was in my room, feeling unwilling to head to the community theatre with my brother Henry. He had recently been adopted by my parents and I was not in the mood for being on stage with him. “Kirstie, come here,” my mom called. Following her voice, I found her outside the bathroom, holding a wet book. She gave the book a shake. “Henry’s book was in the bathtub. Did you put it there?” She glared at me, something she had never done before Henry came to our home. I hadn’t wet his book on purpose. Rain drops fell from my eyes. To make matters worse, she promised to buy him a new copy. My heart ached. Henry was stealing my mother’s love. He was ruining any life. Meanwhile, Henry was nearby, absorbed in working on a complicated rope knot (绳结). something he liked to do. Why did a boy like him like doing girl work? It seemed far from manly (男子汉气概). Soon, it was time to set off to the community theatre. As Henry walked ahead of us to the car, my mom took me aside and said in a low voice, “It will be Henry’s first time on stage. Be kind to him, honey.” I nodded but sighed (叹气). I hadn’t always found it this difficult to be kind. But since Henry had moved in, everything felt different. The theatre used to be a special place for my parents and me. With Henry involved, it didn’t seem so special any more. Finally, it was our stage time. My heart beat wildly. I forgot my annoyance at Henry for a while. As we kids lined up, ready to act out our short play, I realized how loosely I had tick the draw string on my skirt. However, my hands acre full. If only someone could help me out. 注意: (1) 续写词数应为150左右; (2)请按如下格式在相应位置作答。 Right then, Henry sensed my embarrassment. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ After the performance, I found Henry and tapped him on the arm gratefully. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 淄博五中2023—2024 学年度第一学期期中教学质量检测 (英语试题) 第Ⅰ卷 注意事项: 1. How much is the shirt? In 1960, she was chosen to go to what is now Tanzania and study the little-known world of chimpanzees. Since then, Goodall has received many awards and honorary degrees as a world-famous conservationist (自然环境保护主义者). Now, Goodall has received an unusual honor. A. To give Jane Goodall a surprise. Inspire Newer Generations to Care About Conservation Through a Doll 【答案】4. C 5. D 6. B 7. D 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇新闻报道。文章讲述芭比娃娃公司推出了一款以自然环境保护主义者Jane Goodall为原型的芭比娃娃,以鼓励年轻人保护自然环境。 【4题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中的“but it’s not just any doll, it’s made out of recycled plastic. And Barbie is partnering with the Jane Goodall Foundation and its Roots & Shoots program which inspires young people to protect animals and the environment. (但这不是一个普通的芭比娃娃,它是由回收塑料制成的。芭比正与珍·古道尔基金会及其“根与芽”项目合作,该项目旨在激励年轻人保护动物和环境。)”可知,芭比娃娃公司推出以自然环境保护主义者Jane Goodall为原型的芭比娃娃旨在鼓励年轻人保护动物和环境。故选C。 【5题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段中的““There was a little boy of 7 in Burundi, and I had given a talk to the school and he came up to me and said, ‘If I pick out a piece of trash every day, it will make a difference, won’t it?’ And I said, ‘Yes it will. And suppose you persuade (劝说) 10 of your friends to pick up a piece of rubbish every day.’ He said, ‘Oh, that would really make a difference and then they could all get 10 of their friends, couldn’t they?’ Goodall said, “So, that’s it. The cumulative (积累的) effect of small actions can lead to big change.” 根据最后一段““I sincerely hope that it will help to create more interest in the natural world,” she said about the Barbie. “Because hopefully, you know, they’ll learn more about me through the doll. And that will get them interested. It doesn’t really matter if they have a career in conservation, as long as they pay attention to conservation in their daily lives.” D。 C Popularization has in some cases changed the original meaning of emotional (情感的) intelligence. A. To explain a rule. 【答案】8. D 9. B 10. A 11. B 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了情商的定义以及对有关于情商未来研究的期望。 【8题详解】 细节理解题。根据第一段“Research has shown that emotional skills may contribute to some of these qualities (研究表明,情商技巧可能有助于这些品质的形成)”可知,情商有助于这些品质的形成,所以情商并不是指一个人的积极品质。故选D项。 【9题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段“The ability to accurately understand how others are feeling may be used by a doctor to find how best to help her patients, while a cheater might use it to control potential victims. (医生可能利用这种准确理解他人感受的能力来找到最好的帮助病人的方法,而骗子可能利用这种能力来控制潜在的受害者)”可推知,作者在文章第二段中提到“医生”和“骗子”是举例子来阐明下文的观点——情商高并不一定能使一个人成为有道德的人。故选B项。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段“the overall effects of the publicity have been more beneficial than harmful. …The popularization of emotional intelligence has helped both the public and researchers (宣传的总体效果一直是利大于弊。这种普及最积极的方面是雇主、教育者和其他对促进社会福利感兴趣的人对情感进行了新的、迫切需要的强调。情商的普及帮助了公众和研究人员)”可知,作者认为总体效果利大于弊,情商的普及帮助了公众和研究人员,所以作者对情商普及的态度是赞同的。故选A项。 【11题详解】 主旨大意题。根据最后一段“we hope that such attention will excite a greater interest in the scientific and scholarly study of emotion. It is our hope that in coming decades, advances in science will offer new perspectives from which to study how people manage their lives. (我们希望这种关注将激发人们对情感科学和学术研究的更大兴趣。我们希望在未来的几十年里,科学的进步将为研究人们如何管理自己的生活提供新的视角)”可推知,本段主要讲述对未来关于情商研究的期望。故选B项。 D Plenty, an agricultural technology company in San Francisco, is reinventing farms and farming. 13 What does the underlined phrase “cope with” in paragraph 4 mean? A. Register. B. Improve. C. Present. D. Solve. 【答案】12. C 13. D 14. A 15. D 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了垂直农业的诸多好处以及将来的发展方向及相关内容。 【12题详解】 细节理解题。根据第一段中“Plenty does all those things but uses 95% less water and 99% less land.(Plenty做了所有这些事情,但少用了95%的水,少用了99%的土地)”和第二段中“However, flat farms still use a lot of water and land, while a Plenty’s vertical farm can produce the same quantity of fruits and vegetables as a 720-acre flat farm, but on only 2 acres.(然而,平面农场仍然使用大量的水和土地,而Plenty的垂直农场可以生产与720英亩平面农场相同数量的水果和蔬菜,但只有2英亩)”可知,生产相同数量的水果和蔬菜,垂直农场比传统的平面农场使用的土地和水更少。也就是说,垂直农场可以节省土地资源和水资源。故选C项。 【13题详解】 词句猜测题。划线词句前文“Imported (进口的) fruits and vegetables are more expensive, so poor people in society are at an extreme nutritional disadvantage.(进口水果和蔬菜更贵,所以社会上的穷人在营养方面处于极端劣势)”以及该段其他内容说明,该段主要讲述了垂直农业的另一个优势,从而推知划线词句“Vertical farms could cope with this problem.(垂直农场可以cope with这个问题)”其中划线短语应为“解决”的意思,与D项Solve“解决”同义。故选D项。 【14题详解】 推理判断题。通读全文,根据最后一段中“Ideally, the company will branch out, opening farms across the country and beyond.(理想情况下,该公司将扩大规模,在全国各地及其他地区开设农场)”可知,在未来,Plenty将会有更多的垂直农场。故选A项。 【15题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,根据第一段中“Plenty does all those things but uses 95% less water and 99% less land.(Plenty做了所有这些事情,但少用了95%的水,少用了99%的土地)”和第四段中“Another advantage of vertical farming is that the fruits and vegetables are grown at a warehouse nearby instead of 1,000 miles away or more from a city.(垂直农业的另一个优点是,水果和蔬菜是在附近的仓库种植的,而不是离城市1000英里或更远的地方)”和倒数第二段中“Also, Plenty’s farms grow organic food without using herbicides (除草剂) or pesticides.(此外,许多农场种植的有机食品不使用除草剂或杀虫剂)”以及最后一段中“Moreover, all the packaging is 100% recyclable, made of recycled plastic and specially designed to keep the food fresh longer to reduce food waste.(此外,所有的包装都是100%可回收的,由再生塑料制成,特别设计可以使食物保持更长时间的新鲜,以减少食物浪费)”可知,本文主要介绍了垂直农业的多种益处并就其益处进行了解释。故选D项。 第二节(共5小题: 每小题2.5分, 满分 12.5分) 阅读下面短文、从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项. 选项中有两项为多余选项, They say once you learn to ride a bike, you never forget. In recent times, cycling has seen an increase in popularity, so many people raise a question: ___16___ First, let’s look at the health benefits. Cycling can improve your cardiovascular (心血管的) health and burn extra body fat. Strengthening your muscles in your legs helps increase your potential torque (扭矩) and cadence (节奏). ___17___ A long ride in the countryside could help you clear your mind, or de-stress. But it’s not only about your body and mind there are also some plus sides for your wallet’s health. Cycling can be a great way to go to work or get about town. ___18___ If you drive to work, sometimes finding somewhere to park can be a nightmare, whereas finding somewhere to chain your bike up can be much simpler. Then, on the subway, there are changes at stations and other people who go to work speaking loudly on their phones to deal with. ___19___ And if you’re worried about safety, there are designated cycle lanes in many major cities. In addition, wearing high-visibility clothing is another way to improve your safety when cycling on the roads. ___20___ It can help you reduce your carbon footprints. So, whether people want to cycle for their health, their wallet, the environment, or a combination of all of them —the popularity of cycling is on the rise. A. What makes cycling so convenient? B. But cyclists face neither of these issues. C And people will choose to go to work by cycling. D. This can save you a lot of money on fuel or public transportation. E. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Right then, Henry sensed my embarrassment. He immediately came to my aid. He pulled up my skirt and skillfully tied the drawstring with a beautiful knot. Seeing what Henry did for me, something deep in my mind began to change. It seemed as if my cold heart began to melt slowly and my annoyance at him gradually gave way to guilt. I regretted having treated him as a stranger. While my mind was wandering, our performance time came. It turned out a great success, thunderous applause filling the whole theatre. After the performance, I found Henry and tapped him on the arm gratefully. “Thanks,” I said with a grateful smile on my face. I had to admit that but for his timely help, I would have been extremely embarrassed. Without his knotting skill, the performance would have been quite different. “KNOT a problem. You are my sister,” he grinned innocently, saying humorously. Surrounded by the cheerful atmosphere, I felt a flood of warmth of a big family. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad to have a new person in my corner of the world after all. 词汇激活: 行为类 ①帮助:come to one’s aid/give sb. a hand ②改变:change/alter ③将……视为:treat...as/regard...as 情绪类 ①后悔:regret/feel sorry for ②感激的:grateful/appreciative 【点睛】【高分句型1】It seemed as if my cold heart began to melt slowly and my annoyance at him gradually gave way to guilt.
