I’d appreciate that I can have this opportunity to be here and share with you my childhood dream to be a successful professor in a famous university. I hope all of you can realize your dreams by learning in our college in the following four years. I grew up in a two-bedroom house with my parents and six brothers and sisters. We had to walk to the river near our home to get water to drink, wash and bathe. We had to use candles at night to save on the electricity Bill. We didn’t live a rich life then but all my siblings are now professionals in their careers. We knew our parents could not pay for college so we all studied hard to get scholarships. Also, while we were in college we got part time jobs. Dear students, I know there are times in your life that you may feel like giving up your dreams, but whenever that happens, remember the reason for starting. Changes do not happen overnight. It takes determination to get results. Therefore, keep your goals in mind and never stop trying to achieve them. There might be roadblocks along the way which may affect your determination. As soon as you overcome those challenges, the process will seem much easy.

Nothing beats live music, but the venue makes a difference. When you're able to score tickets to an incredible concert in an incredible place, you won't forget the experience. Here are some of the coolest music venues from around the world. If you haven't been to any of these, you've got some traveling to do.
Red Rocks, Morrison, the United States
Red Rocks might be the most beautiful and famous venue in the United States. At 6,450 feet above sea level, Red Rocks is a geologically formed natural stage. Its massive sandstone provides a perfect stage for jam bands. If you're into the blues and jazz, you'll have no trouble finding something in line with your interests.
Meet Factory, Prague, Czech Republic
Smallest venues on this list, Meet Factory is an art gallery, theater, and music venue. The venue only accommodates 1,000 people, so you won't see any huge names come through. Still, it's a great place to see up-and-coming local acts, and if you've got an eye for contemporary art, you'll love your time here.
Arena of NÎmes, NÎmes, France
Originally built around A. D. 70, the Arena of Nimes presents concertgoers with an interesting question: Should they enjoy the music, or marvel at the architecture? The Arena is, after all, one of the world's best-preserved Roman theaters. Many major touring acts plan stops at the Arena of Nimes, especially during the venue's annual festival.
Sydney Opera House, Sydney, Australia
The Sydney Opera House is one of the world's most famous performing venues. I's also one of the most distinctive buildings in Sydney, thanks to the breathtaking design by Danish architect Utzon. It hosts about 40 events per week, so whether you're into jazz, rock, classical music, or opera, you'll find something to watch.
21. Where can you enjoy music in natural beauty?
A. At Red Rocks. B. At Meet Factory. C. At Arena of Nimes. D. At Sydney Opera House.

PAUL HEMINGTON, 57, is the Assistant Operations Manager at Cheddar Gorge(切达峡谷) and Caves cheddargorge.co.uk
I moved to SOMERSET mainly for my family. My daughter was getting married and I didn’t want to live six hours away, so we made the move. Once we moved, we were made unneeded and it was a mad race to get work. I ended up at here at Cheddar Gorge and Caves.
Cheddar Gorge is like nothing else in the UK. It’s a unique phenomenon, because although there are other caves in the country, you don’t have the gorge elsewhere. This is a major geological feature, it’s three miles long and there’s just this natural, raw beauty. I can sit at my desk in guest services and look out at part of the gorge. It’s amazing.
The Cheddar Gorge spirit is strong. You know, not having worked here or heard about the area, you come here and it gets under your skin in the right way. You become part of it, it becomes part of you. I’m very passionate about it. And there’s the amazing wildlife, the geology, the prehistory — Cheddar Man is still one of the greatest finds in the UK.
Every day at Cheddar Gorge and Caves is different. You’ve got the rock sports side of things, the climbing, the caving. We take people through the caves on tours and we have pre-history, which we do with the museum, whereby we have schools come in and do demonstrations with them. We will dress up as genuinely as we can to reproduce the time period of the Cheddar Man, which is the Mesolithic period, so 10,000 years ago. We do fire lighting, for example, and hopefully it’s inspiring to the young people! It’s really cool to be in the museum garden and have part of the gorge as the background while you’re doing it, so you can really submerge yourself in that moment.
My favourite spot is when you go past the peak on the walk and you can look back down into the gorge or across to the reservoir. The view is amazing. Yes, you can see pictures of it, but honestly you have to be there to fully appreciate it. You might hear some buzzards or see some sheep or goats while you’re up there, just to enhance the experience!
24. PAUL HEMINGTON originally moved to Cheddar Gorge to __________.
A. settle down in the countryside B. be closer to his daughter
C land a job as a tour guide D. take part in a competitive race
25. The underlined phrase “gets under your skin” is closest in meaning to _________.

A. He goes to the school to give lectures on pre-history.
B. He demonstrates to young people how to climb rocks.
C. He participates in recreating the scenes in the Mesolithic period.
D. He decorates the museum garden to make it look like the gorge.
27. What does PAUL HEMINGTON talk about in this article?
A. How he adapts to the local way of life.
B. What major local attractions are worth seeing.
C. Why Cheddar Gorge ranks first as a natural wonder.
D. What makes Cheddar Gorge so special to him.
【答案】24. B 25. A 26. C 27. D

(在Cheddar Gorge和洞穴的每一天都不一样。)”以及第六段中“My favourite spot is when you go past the peak on the walk and you can look back down into the gorge or across to the reservoir.

The days of staring at the computer screen pretending to be interested in an assignment even though you are bored out of your mind may soon be coming to an end. That's because if Dr Harry Witchel, Discipline Leader in Physiology at England's Brighton and Sussex Medical School, has his way, computers of the future will be able to detect boredom and even react to it real-time.
But before you get concerned, the machine is not reading your mind. It is just keeping track of the constant involuntary(无意识的)movements that people exhibit when in front of a computer or even a television. These are not the bigger instrumental actions like moving a mouse or using the remote, but barely noticeable movements like scratching, fidgeting, or stretching. Witchel says the level of movement is directly linked to how absorbed the person is in what he or she is reading or watching. The higher the interest level. the less the movement!
To test the theory, Witchel and his team invited 27 people and exposed them to a variety of digital content for three minutes at a time. The activities ranged from playing online games to reading documents like the banking regulations that most people would find boring.
A video motion tracker monitored their movements as they powered through each assignment. Just as the researchers had expected, the involuntary actions decreased dramatically, by as much as 42%, when the participants were totally absorbed in what they were reading or seeing.
Fortunately, the scientists are not planning to use the findings to create machines that report students who are not focusing at school. Instead, they believe that combining the motion detecting technology with future computers will help enhance the digital learning experience.
The scientists say that being able to measure the students' interest level will enable educators to adjust the materials real-time and re-engage the students. Witchel also believes that the technology can provide filmmakers with honest audience opinions.
28. According to Dr Harry, what will future computers be able to do?
A. Keep a learner from distraction.
B. Help a learner with his assignments.
C. Read a learner's mind exactly real-time.
D. Identify dullness of a learner and respond to it.
29. How does an absorbed learner tend to behave?
A. Laugh and shout excitedly. B. Use less energy in an assignment.
C. Perform fewer involuntary actions. D. Show noticeable movements constantly.
30. What is the value of this technology for educators?
A. Bettering their digital learning experience. B. Introducing more computers into class.
C. Finding the absent-minded students in class. D. Detecting what interests the students most.
31. What is the author's purpose in writing the text?
A. To introduce an upcoming technology.
B. To update educators' teaching concept.
C. To show what learning will be like in the future.
D. To explain how life will be shaped by technology.
【答案】28. D 29. C 30. D 31. A

Consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) has increased over the past 20 years. UPFs (超加工食品) contain few or no whole foods, are industrially produced, are ready-to-eat or ready-to-heat, and include additives (添加剂). The ultra-processing of food reduces its nutritional value. It has been known that higher UPF consumption is associated with overweight and heart disease. Now, research has been extended to examine its impact on mental health.
In a new study, over 72,000 participants who were at least 55 years old and didn’t have dementia (痴呆) at the start of the study were followed for an average of 10 years, during which they filled out questionnaires regarding their diet. By the end of the study, 518 people were diagnosed (诊断) with dementia. After adjusting for other factors that could affect risk of dementia such as age, gender, and heart disease, researchers found every 10 percent increase in daily intake of UPFs was associated with a 25 percent higher risk of dementia. They also found replacing 10percent of UPFs with unprocessed or minimally processed foods was associated with a 19 percent lower risk of dementia.
In another study, researchers found individuals who consumed the most UPFs had significant increases in the symptoms (症状) of mild depression, “mentally unhealthy days”, and “anxious days”. Eric Hecht, Founder and Executive Director of the Institute of Etiological Research, said, “More than 70 percent of packaged foods in the US are classified as UPFs and represent about 60percent of all calories consumed by Americans. Considering the degree of exposure to and effects of UPF consumption, this study has great significance in clinical practice and public health. It might help improve future development of dietary guidelines.”
Facing such alarming data, maybe it’s time for Americans to reconsider their food choices. Researchers recommend taxes on UPFs and carrying out policies to reduce the consumption. They also support programs and policies to increase the availability and affordability of whole foods, especially among disadvantaged populations.
32. What do we know about UPFs?
A. They have no nutritional value. B. They are ready-made and instant foods.
C. They are cheap and mass-produced. D. They serve as additions to our daily diets.
33. What’s Eric Hecht’s attitude toward the new study?
A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Ambiguous. D. Doubtful.
34. What do researchers suggest doing?
A. Collecting higher taxes on UPFs. B. Decreasing UPFs’ consumption in diet.
C. Focusing on the nutrient content of foods. D. Increasing public awareness of whole foods.
35. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Public Health Response to UPFs B. Physical Disorders Linked to UPFs
C. Rising Consumption of UPFs in the US D. Negative Effects of UPFs on Mental Health
【答案】32. B 33. A 34. B 35. D
根据第一段中的“UPFs (超加工食品) contain few or no whole foods, are industrially produced, are ready-to-eat or ready-to-heat, and include additives (添加剂). The ultra-processing of food reduces its nutritional value. (超加工食品含有很少或不含天然食物,是工业生产的,是即食或即热的,并含有添加剂。食品的超加工降低了其营养价值)”可推知,UPFs是预先制成的快餐食品。故选B。
【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“Considering the degree of exposure to and effects of UPF consumption, this study has great significance in clinical practice and public health. It might help improve future development of dietary guidelines. (考虑到UPF消费的暴露程度和影响,本研究在临床实践和公共卫生方面具有重要意义。这可能有助于改善未来饮食指南的制定)”可推知,Eric Hecht对这项研究持肯定的态度,故选A。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“Researchers recommend taxes on UPFs and carrying out policies to reduce the consumption. (研究人员建议对UPF征税,并实施减少消费的政策)”可推知,研究人员建议人们要降低膳食中超加工食品的比例,减少超加工食品的摄入量。故选B。
【35题详解】

Tim was a bright and cheerful child, always wearing a smile that could light up the gloomy (阴郁的) day. However, as time passed, Tim began to feel a heaviness in his heart that he couldn’t quite understand.
School, once a place of laughter and learning, became a challenge for Tim. His grades slipped, and his friends noticed that he wasn’t as energetic as before. Tim’s parents, concerned about their son, took him to see a doctor who explained that Tim was battling something called depression.
Tim felt like a dark cloud was hanging over him, making it hard to enjoy the things he once loved. His parents, determined to help him, searched for a way to bring back their son’s joy. That’s when they discovered the magical power of music.
One day, Tim’s mom handed him a small, shiny instrument called a ukulele (尤克里里琴). She gently said, “I heard the ukulele has a special way of healing hearts. Why not give it a try?” At first, Tim hesitated, but with a little encouragement, he pulled the strings of the ukulele. The soft melody (旋律) that emerged seemed to touch the deepest parts of his heart. Tim felt a ray of hope for the first time in a long while.
His parents, seeing the positive change, enrolled Tim in a music class. There, he met a kind and patient teacher named Mrs. Johnson. In music class, Tim and Mrs. Johnson developed a close connection. She was a supportive and patient teacher, understanding how music could help Tim emotionally. During their time together, Mrs. Johnson inspired Tim to try composing his own music. This became a way for him to express unique emotions and understand himself better. Mrs. Johnson’s support allowed Tim to find comfort through music.

Paragraph 2: Tim’s friends also noticed the change in him.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Soon, with the help of Mrs. Johnson, Tim made great progress in playing the ukulele. His fingers danced on the strings, making vibrant tunes that resonated with the emotions. The wonderful melody surprised Mrs. Johnson a lot. After that, Mrs. Johnson guided him to explore different genres. Each note he played became a brushstroke on the canvas of his emotional expression. Then came a chance. Mrs. Johnson encouraged him to perform at school events, sharing his music with others. As he played, the audience could indeed feel the sincerity in his music. The dark cloud that once hung over him began to lift, replaced by a radiant glow.
Tim’s friends also noticed the change in him. They saw how the ukulele became Tim’s companion in the journey of self-discovery. Intrigued by the transformation, they expressed curiosity about the ukulele. Tim, sensing an opportunity to share the joy he found, eagerly taught his friends the basics. Together, they formed a small band. Through the power of melodies and shared experiences, the group found solace and joy. Tim’s journey not only brought healing to himself but also created a ripple effect, proving that sometimes, the smallest notes can compose the symphony of happiness.

22. What is special about Meet Factory?
A. It enjoys breathtaking scenery. B. It hosts both musical and artistic events.
C. It is the largest venue of all. D. It is famous for contemporary music.
23. What do the listed music venues have in common?
A. They have a long history. B. They are built near the sea.

C. land a job as a tour guide D. take part in a competitive race
25. The underlined phrase “gets under your skin” is closest in meaning to _________.
A. affects you deeply B. bothers you greatly
C. increases your strength D. improves your skin condition
26. Which of the following falls into Paul’s job descriptions?

A They have no nutritional value.
