Grizzly bears, which may grow to about 2.5m long and weigh
over 400kg,occupy a conflicted corner of the American psyche—we
revere (敬畏) them even as they give us frightening dreams.Ask the
tourists from around the world that flood into Yellowstone National
Park what they most hope to see,and their answer is often the same:
a grizzly bear.
“Grizzly bears are re-occupying large areas of their former
range,” says bear biologist Chris Servheen. As grizzly bears expand
their range into places where they haven’t been seen in a century or
more, they’re increasingly being sighted by humans.
The western half of the U. S. was full of grizzlies when Europeans
came, with a rough number of 50,000 or more living alongside
Native Americans.By the early 1970s,after centuries of cruel and
continuous hunting by settlers,600 to 800 grizzlies remained on a
mere 2 percent of their former range in the Northern Rockies. In
1975,grizzlies were listed under the Endangered Species Act.
Today, there are about 2,000 or more grizzly bears in the U. S.
Their recovery has been so successful that the U. S. Fish and Wildlife
Service has twice attempted to de-list grizzlies, which would loosen
legal protections and allow them to be hunted. Both efforts were
overturned due to lawsuits from conservation groups. For now,
grizzlies remain listed.
Obviously,if precautions (预防) aren’t taken,grizzlies can
become troublesome, sometimes killing farm animals or walking
through yards in search of food.If people remove food and attractants
from their yards and campsites, grizzlies will typically pass by
without trouble.Putting electric fencing around chicken houses and
other farm animal quarters is also highly effective at getting grizzlies
away.“Our hope is to have a clean,attractant-free place where bears
can pass through without learning bad habits,” says James Jonkel,
longtime biologist who manages bears in and around Missoula.

32. How do Americans look at grizzlies?
A. They cause mixed feelings in people.
B. They should be kept in national parks.
C. They are of high scientific value.
D. They are a symbol of American culture.
答案:A
Grizzly bears...occupy a
conflicted corner of the American psyche
据了一个矛盾的角落)”和“we revere them even as they give
us frightening dreams...their answer is often the same: a
33. What has helped the increase of the grizzly population?
A. The European settlers’ behavior.
B. The expansion of bears’ range.
C. The protection by law since 1975.
D. The support of Native Americans.
In 1975,grizzlies were listed under the
Endangered Species Act (1975
Today, there are about 2,000 or more
grizzly bears in the U. S.

34. What has stopped the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service from de-listing
grizzlies?
A. The opposition of conservation groups.
B. The successful comeback of grizzlies.
C. The voice of the biologists.
D. The local farmers’ advocates.
答案:A
根据题干的“the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service from
efforts were overturned due to lawsuits from conservation groups (由于
35. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Food should be provided for grizzlies.
B. People can live in harmony with grizzlies.
C. A special path should be built for grizzlies.
D. Technology can be introduced to protect grizzlies.
If people remove food and
attractants...is also highly effective at getting grizzlies away

Animals can adapt quickly to survive
unfavorable environmental conditions. Evidence is mounting to show
that plants can, too.A paper published in the journal Trends in Plant
Science details how plants are rapidly adapting to the effects of climate
change, and how they are passing down the adaptation to their
offspring (后代).
Plants are facing more environmental stresses than ever. For example, climate change is making winters shorter in many locations, and plants are responding. “Many plants require a minimum period of cold in order to set up their environmental clock to define their flowering time,”says Martinelli,a plant geneticist at the University of Florence. “As cold seasons shorten, plants have adapted to require shorter periods of cold to delay flowering. These mechanisms allow plants to avoid flowering in periods when they have fewer opportunities to reproduce.”
Because plants don’t have neural (神经的) networks, their
memory is based entirely on cellular (细胞的), molecular (分子的),
and biochemical networks. These networks make up what the
researchers call the somatic memory. “It allows plants to recognize the
occurrence of a previous environmental condition and to react
accordingly,”says Martinelli.
These somatic memories can then be passed to the plants’ offspring
via epigenetics (表观遗传学).“Several examples demonstrate the
existence of molecular mechanisms modulating plant memory for
environmental stresses and affecting the adaptation of offsprings to
these stresses,”says Martinelli.
Going forward,Martinelli hopes to understand even more about
the genes that are being passed down.“We are particularly interested in
decoding the epigenetic alphabet without changes in DNA sequence (顺
序),” he says.“This is especially important when we consider the
rapid climate change we observe today.Every living organism, including plants, needs to quickly adapt to survive.”

Researchers at the University of
Massachusetts Amherst (UMass Amherst) recently announced that they
have figured out how to engineer a biofilm (生物膜) that harvests the
energy in evaporation (蒸发) and changes it to electricity. This biofilm,
which was announced in Nature Communications, has the potential to
revolutionize the world of wearable electronics, powering everything
from personal medical sensors to personal electronics.
“This is a very exciting technology,”says Liu Xiaomeng,a
graduate student in electrical and computer engineering in UMass
Amherst’s College of Engineering and the paper’s lead author.“It
generates real green energy, and unlike other so-called ‘green-energy’
sources,its production is totally green.”
That is because this biofilm—which is a sheet of bacterial cells and
as thin as a sheet of paper—is produced naturally by an engineered
version of the bacterium Geobacter sulfurreducens.Geobacter
sulfurreducens is known to produce electricity and has been used
previously in “microbial batteries” to power electrical equipment. But
such batteries require that Geobacter sulfurreducens be properly cared
for and fed a constant diet.By contrast, this new biofilm, which can
supply as much energy as a comparably sized battery, works
continuously,because it is dead.And because it is dead,it doesn’t
need to be fed.
The secret behind this new biofilm is that it makes energy from the
moisture (水分) on your skin. While we daily read stories about solar
power,at least 50% of the solar energy reaching the earth goes toward
evaporating water.“This is a huge,undiscovered source of
energy,” says Yao Jun,professor of electrical and computer
engineering at UMass Amherst, and the paper’s one senior author.Since
the surface of our skin is constantly moist with sweat, the biofilm can
“plug into” it and change the energy locked in evaporation into
sufficient energy to power small equipment.“Our next step is to
increase the size of our film to power more intelligent wearable
electronics,” says Yao,and Liu points out that one of the goals is to
power entire electronic systems, rather than single equipment.

cause many sea animals to die.For another, people who eat marine

It was one morning,and I awoke with a
mission:to find my lost cat,Baby-Girl.As I got ready,I could hear
icy rain pelting the windows.Baby-Girl was out there somewhere in the
storm; I could just feel it.Sure,it had been a couple of weeks since
she’d gone missing, but I still had faith. This was the season for
miracles,after all.
About two weeks ago,my sweet kitty disappeared from my
parents’ house in my hometown.Baby-Girl had been staying with them
while I was between apartments. At the time,I lived and worked in
another city.I was staying with friends until I rented my own house.Baby-Girl had gotten out of my parents’ house the day before I was set to drive back home to pick her up.
My dad and I had spent that entire visit searching for her.Dad was a
“realist”,which meant he spent a whole lot of time trying to prepare
me for the worst.“She’s either been hit by a car or been taken in by
someone who found her,” he said.I rolled my eyes.He could do with
a little more faith!
Besides,though I couldn’t explain it,I knew I’d see Baby-Girl
again. She could survive all on her own.If any cat could do the
impossible,it was my Baby-Girl.Even after I returned to my house
without her, deep down I had this undeniable feeling that we would be
reunited one day.
Now,home again for the holidays,I was determined to pick up
my search right where I’d left off.I grabbed Baby-Girl’s cat carrier and
loaded it into the car, then asked my dad to drive me to the shelter.
At the shelter,a staff member took us to see the cats.We walked
through rows of cages. My eyes scanned cats of all colors and sizes.None
of them was my Baby-Girl.Then I noticed a room farther back.I pushed
ahead.“Sweetheart, that’s where they keep the cats that just came
in,” Dad said.“Your cat wouldn’t be in there.”
I insisted it didn’t hurt to look and stepped into the room.
Sensing their doubts,I was ready to prove she was my cat.
Baby-Girl。
I insisted it didn’t hurt to look and stepped into the room. Suddenly, there came a familiar meow.I followed the sound and my eyes fell on a little cat with big green eyes. She was skinnier than I remembered, but it was Baby-Girl! My eye swelled up with tears.I
opened the cage door.Baby-Girl practically jumped into my arms.I held
her close as Dad looked on.“There’s just no way...,” he mumbled. The shelter staff were skeptical too, saying the cat had just been brought in during the morning storm.
Sensing their doubts,I was ready to prove she was my cat. I
grabbed the carrier.I’d trained Baby-Girl to walk inside the carrier.Sure
enough, when she was let down on the floor, she made a dash for the
carrier and rushed right inside.I was overjoyed to have her back.It was a
miracle that she had managed to survive on her own for so long, and I
was filled with admiration for her strength and determination.I thanked
my lucky stars that I had never given up hope, and that I had come
back to the shelter one last time.
