My First Marathon (马拉松)
A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles was
injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only
two weeks to train.Yet, I was determined to go ahead.
I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first P. E. class,
the teacher required us to run laps and then hit a softball.I didn’t do
either well.He later informed me that I was “not athletic”.
The idea that I was “not athletic” stuck with me for years. When
I started running in my 30s, I realized running was a battle against
myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was
all about the battle against my own body and mind.A test of wills!
The night before my marathon, I dreamt that I couldn’t even
find the finish line.I woke up sweating and nervous, but ready to
prove something to myself.
Shortly after crossing the start line, my shoe laces (鞋带)
became untied. So I stopped to readjust. Not the start I wanted!
At mile 3, I passed a sign: “GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!”
By mile 17, I became out of breath and the once injured ankle
hurt badly.Despite the pain, I stayed the course walking a bit and
then running again.
By mile 21, I was starving!
As I approached mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She
is my biggest fan.She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4
a.m.or questioned my expenses on running.
I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got
a medal. In fact, I got the same medal as the one that the guy who
came in first place had.
Determined to be myself, move forward, free of shame and
worldly labels (世俗标签), I can now call myself a “marathon
winner”.

It is September and the beginning of the rainy
season in Uganda, when roads become flooded with clay waters. In
spite of these conditions,21-year-old Florence Nakaggwa is out
training in the outskirts of Kalagala. She cycles between 30-60 miles
each day.
Earlier this year,Nakaggwa became Uganda’s first female rider to
receive a professional cycling contract, signing with Team Amani. Her
signing came as a surprise to her home village of Kalagala, where
neighbours had derided (嘲讽) her ambitions.“I tend to ignore them. This is my chosen career—not working in a hair salon,as many in my culture would expect.”
In 2015,a social worker and cycling fan called Miiro Michael
noticed an increasing number of young boys racing bicycles they would
normally use to fetch water. So he formed the cycling club.In 2019
Nakaggwa became the first woman to join the cycling club.Michael
recognized her leadership qualities and appointed her captain.Since
then, nine more girls have joined.“I tell the girls not to sit on their
talents. When you sit on a bike you are not a boy or a girl, you are just a
being—and you need to keep up with everyone in the race no matter
who they are,” she says.
After coming first in local community races, one of her first
challenges on the big stage was the Kintu Trial in western Uganda last
year,a tough 500 km of mountain biking over five days, competing
against European and African men and women. On day one she came
first, and was held aloft (高高地) in amazement by those at the finish
line.
Her next race is the Rhino Run this month,an expedition that
crosses 1,700 miles of mountain ranges, forests and towering sand
dunes (沙丘).Competitors self-navigate (导航),carrying all their
camping equipment and food.Completing it will be another first for this
young pioneer.“I have to reach the level of the Tour de France...that is
the best place for a professional cyclist to show their tactics (策略) and
their spirit,” she says.

Good morning, everyone.Today,I’d like to share a story about
a man of perseverance.
Thomas Edison, the great inventor, faced numerous failures
before his groundbreaking success. He made countless attempts to invent
the electric light bulb, experiencing over a thousand failures. However, instead of giving up,he famously said,“I have not failed.I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” His tenacity and refusal to accept defeat ultimately led him to success, forever changing the world.
This story teaches me a valuable lesson about perseverance. It
reminds me that failure is not a reason to quit but an opportunity to learn
and grow.It is through persistence that we can overcome obstacles and
achieve our goals.
In conclusion, let’s remember the words of Thomas Edison and
embrace perseverance in our own lives.
Thanks for your listening.
Joyce was in the fourth grade and he joined
the noisy children of his class as usual.“Children! Silence!”Mangat Madam suddenly entered the class. She announced that next week would be the math week.“I’d like each of you to work on a project. You could do it individually or in a group,” she instructed.“The topic for the project needs approving tomorrow and it has to be displayed at the math week exhibition. The best project will be awarded and there is also a surprise gift from my side,”she added.
Joyce, who was extremely good at math, sat in the corner seat of
the first bench with Karan.Karan asked Joyce if they could work on the
math project together.Joyce replied in a prideful tone,“Ha ha,you
want to join me.I think I will do the project on my own.”Joyce wanted
to get awarded and the surprise gift all for himself from Mangat Madam.
After deep consideration,Joyce decided to work on a math magic
quiz on the circuit board. The next day in school,Mangat Madam
arrived in the classroom and all the children submitted their topics for
the math exhibition. They all chose to work in a group except Joyce. In
the following days,Joyce gathered all the materials for the project such
as wires, bulbs (电灯泡), a switch and a thin plywood board (胶合
板). He worked out a few mathematical basic operations to be fixed on the board so that when the wire of the circuit touched the right answer, the bulb glowed.Joyce completed the project and was happy with the result.
The evening before the exhibition while packing his school bags,
Joyce again checked the project to see if it was working fine.Alas! All
the lights that were to glow did not seem to light at all.Without finding
the reason,Joyce was tensed. However,he decided to take the same
project to school as he couldn’t change the topic at the last minute. Then
came the next day,and everybody was fascinated in the exhibition.
It was Joyce’s turn to display his project.
Finally, the teacher announced that Karan’s team was the winner.
Finally,the teacher announced that
Karan’s team was the winner.”
It was Joyce’s turn to display his project. Making his way to the
platform with heavy steps,Joyce placed all the materials for his project
well and began to conduct his math magic quiz on the circuit board. He
prayed in his heart that his lights would glow again but in vain.Hearing
other students whispering to each other,Joyce’s face flushed with shame. He ducked his head and stepped back to his seat. And then Karan’s team showed their project. With joint efforts, they made it.
Finally, the teacher announced that Karan’s team was the winner. All the students burst into thunderous applause on hearing that.Karan and his partners walked up to the front with great excitement. They were awarded and also received the surprise gift from Mangat Madam. After class,Joyce approached Karan, expressed admiration for his team’s project and congratulated on their success sincerely. That day Joyce learnt the biggest lesson of his life:it is always better to work as a team rather than to work alone.
