A
Giuseppe Paternò achieved the dream of a lifetime:He got a
university degree when he was two months to 97.
Mr.Paternò’s graduation has inspired news coverage around the
world, partly because of his age.Mr.Paternò has seemed to get around
the many difficulties he has faced in his lifetime.Studying had been his
passion since he was a small child,he said,“but unfortunately life
betrayed me”.
Born in Palermo in 1923,he was the first of seven children in a
very poor family. His dad worked at a job on a farm, and his mother
took care of these children at home.Mr.Paternò began working soon
after finishing primary school. The family was large. There was only one
paycheck.Eventually he ended up at a publishing house, where the boss
persuaded his father to send him back to school for a three-year
vocational degree.Mr.Paternò then worked for an insurance agency
while he took private classes to become a telegraph operator. The job
also opened doors to the State Railways company, where he worked
for more than four decades.
In 1951,with a wife and two small children at home,he earned a
high school degree as a surveyor, which led to an office job at State
Railways. It was only after he retired,in the mid-1980s,that he
returned to his books, taking theology courses through the Archdiocese
of Palermo after a chance meeting with a professor of history who urged
him to follow his passion.
Mr.Micari, the president of the University of Palermo,
congratulated Mr.Paternò on finishing his degree with a near-perfect
grade point average.“A graduate at this age,who has all this
passion, this enthusiasm, and this talent is certainly an extraordinary
spokesman for our university,” Mr.Micari told reporters later.

(2023·广东广州三模)Few businesses can run without computers,
giving keyboard shortcuts an incredible importance.Schools view typing
courses as necessary. But what are we giving up as handwriting loses its
significance?
Brain power, according to science.Researchers from Princeton
University and the University of California conducted a series of studies
to demonstrate the differences between students who wrote out their
notes and those who typed them.Study participants took notes on a
lecture using one of the two methods and were tested 30 minutes after
the lecture, and again a week later.
The results showed both types of notetakers did well on the first
test. The longhand notetakers had a stronger grasp of the overall
concept.Students with the handwritten notes were also able to better
remember and understand the concept of the lecture a week later, and
were more open to understanding new ideas.
According to Pam Mueller, lead author of the study,“Our
findings suggest even when laptops are used as intended, they may still
be harming academic performance.” Part of the reason is that it was
faster to take notes on the laptop, using exactly the same words meant
they weren’t truly engaged in the content. But notetakers using pen and
paper tended to digest the material better and could rephrase it in their
own words.
Although typing notes using exactly the same words can help in
recalling facts in the short term,it takes the focus away from the main
points of the lesson.“Ironically, the feature that makes their laptop
notetaking so attractive—the ability to take notes more quickly—was
what weakened learning,” educational psychologist Dr.Kenneth
Kiewra told the Wall Street Journal.
Computers aren’t going away soon, but that doesn’t mean paper
notebooks become outdated. In fact,it is best to start using them at an
early age.University of Indiana researchers compared brain scans of
five-year-olds—some who practiced the printing letters, and some who
just looked at the letters. Those who wrote out the letters had more
enhanced and adult-like brain activity.

Even advanced students of English can struggle to learn
prepositions (介词),which are used to describe duration, position,

them.Instead, experts say,the best way to learn prepositions is to
memorize them and practise using them in sentences.Study lists such as

Dear Mike,
[参考范文]
Deeply sorry for not being able to go to the bookstore with you for
your favourite books related to the Chinese history this Sunday. I’m writing in an effort to make a change to our plan.
Dear Mike,
Just now I was informed to attend an important voluntary activity
to be held on the very day. So would it be possible for us to go there
another time, let’s say, next Sunday morning? If so,we’ll have
enough time to make a choice about which books to buy.
Please let me know your decision as soon as possible.
Yours,
Li Hua
Ⅱ.读后续写
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之
构成一篇完整的短文。
In my first years of college,I was still an angry adolescent. I hated my father for his controlling ways and I wanted to break free from his grasp. One day,I had a serious fight with him,and I stormed out of the house, missing my bus to school. As I walked towards the classroom,I suddenly realized that I had forgotten to bring the assignment that was due: a thought card.
Professor Simon had explained that every Tuesday we must bring
along a thought card,on which we wrote a thought,a concern,a
question or anything that was on our mind and that he would return the
card every Wednesday with his comment or answer on it. He stressed
that the card was our admission to class on Tuesdays. Now,I raced
down the hallway, ten minutes late to class. Just outside the door,I
took out a thought card and wrote on it “I am the son of an
IDIOT!”,as I could only think about the conflict I’d just had with
my dad. Then I dashed into the room, handed the card to Professor Simon and took my seat. The moment I reached my seat,I regretted telling him that about my dad. I didn’t want to expose myself to him.
On the Wednesday morning I got to the class early and hid in the
back. Professor Simon began returning our thought cards. On my card
was written “What does ‘the son of an idiot’ do with the rest of his
life?” His question got right to the heart of the issuer: Whose
problem was it? Whose responsibility was it?
Professor Simon’s comment kept coming up in my mind over the
next few weeks. “What does ‘the son of an idiot’ do with the rest of
his life?” The question gnawed at (困扰) me,like a mouse gnawing
at a rotten piece of wood until it finally falls apart. It was a simple
question, but it opened up a Pandora’s box of emotions and thoughts.
注意: 续写词数应为150左右。
I found myself thinking about what he had said more and more
often.
I began to make changes in my life.
[参考范文]
I found myself thinking about what he had said more and more
often. I realized that my father’s controlling behavior was not just
about him; it was also about me. It was about whether or not I could
accept who I was. I also realized that my father’s behavior was not just
his fault; it was also my fault. It was my responsibility to understand
him,to understand his pain and his struggles, and to try to come to
terms with it all. It was my responsibility to find a way to be happy with
who I was.
I began to make changes in my life. I started by trying to
understand my father more. I started by trying to understand myself
more. Slowly,my thinking began to shift. People began to notice that
I was taking responsibility for my doings and choices. My grades
improved. My relationship with my father also improved dramatically.
Now I saw him as concerned and caring, instead of controlling. And it
all started with a question,an innocent-seeming question.
